Yeah, Bodom is pretty weak.

Pantera is one of those bands I only listen to if I'm in the mood for a laugh. Like Earth Crisis or something.

There's some really good metal bands in Michigan. I'm gonna plug a couple friends' bands if you don't mind
Supercontinent (http://www.myspace.com/supercontinentisdrunk) - heavy, melodic stoner metal in the vein of Isis, Mouth of the Architect...
Incisor (http://www.myspace.com/incisormetal) - instrumental thrash metal

All the bands dorkball listed are good, the ones I've heard at least. Some other stuff...

Mouth of the Architect - As far as slow, heavy, melodic bands go, these guys are definitely up there
Mono - Kind of a heavy Mogwai
Russian Circles - Hard to describe, same vein as Pelican, Isis, whatever, but have their own sound
Burst - Like Isis, but more condensed, song based, definitely worth checking out
Earth - HHEAAAAAAVVVVYYYY
Unearthly Trance - Slow, dirty, fucking awesome
FaceDownInShit - See Unearthly Trance description
High on Fire - One of the best metal bands on the planet. Matt Pike of Sleep's band
Lair of the Minotaur - Heavy and gnarly
Boris - Heavy, rockin', look into them right now
The Hidden Hand - Kind of like Sabbath, but sped up
Sweet Cobra - Chicago stoner metal/crustcore
Genghis Tron - Electro-grind. Great, original band

There's plenty more, but this is a good start as far as bands in the last few years go. Bear in mind I mentioned Isis two or three times in this post, and I recommend check them out if you haven't already.

as if anyone would say Rust in peace isn't their best album. like, fuck, come on. the energy, the amazingly fast and precise riffs, dave's vocals, and basically just the whole attitude of the album make it the greatest thrash metal CD ever. that, and I'm a sucker for Marty Friedman guitar solos. my personal favs are Take no prisoners and Poison was the cure.

That shit is timeless as a motherfucker!
Holy shit I saw them play three nights in a row on that tour here in Hawaii that was fucking insane, it was on some ridiculous blow your mind type shit.
My homie used to take guitar lessons from Marty Friedman, he used to live here and played in a band called Hawaii even. Such a mellow and cool dude too.
Marty is one of the most ludicrous guitar players in history. Period.
Mustaine is definitely one of the raddest frontmen ever. So in charge and his swagger is backed up too. Homeboy can kick some serious ass too on some kickboxing shit.
