Computer.
I keep getting pop-ups from the toolbar telling me to get a bunch of different anti-spyware bullshit... So I got VirusRanger, did a scan, found nothing and it's still doing it.
Help me, I'm alright with computers, but I don't know about this kind of stuff.

Internet Explorer Alert!
Your computer is infected with adware or spyware that displays ads while you browse the internet.
Would you like to download additional software to remove malware threats and protect your system?
I THOUGHT I ALREADY DID! WTF!
Computers SUCK!
-
dude that SAME shit happened to my PC. i could not get rid of it no matter what. and the worst thing was when they would pop up it would have a window within the window that you had to X out first in order to X the main window out. so if it said 30 pop ups, it meant 60. i said fuck it, waited like 4 months like that, and luckily got a macbook for christmas.

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
-
Would it help to get any anti-spyware shit from a torrent?
-
I hate those with such a passion. I used to get them almost every day, then I talked to one of my computer-whiz friends and installed a couple of anti-virus/spyware programs and they stopped. I've never used VirusRanger, so if it doesn't include spyware protection then I'd suggest looking into that. But computers do suck, so good luck.
Wow lots of responses just happened. So yes get anti-spyware.
-
VirusRanger was not legit... none of the spyware from the pop-ups are real... they're all corrupt.
This sucks, what is a GOOD anti-virus/spyware?

Once you download this (the trial version) and start it, on the bottom right you have to enter a license code, copy and paste this:
70-THXMV1-PM-C01-SGX3D-T13-JFHJ
Then do a full scan. It'll probably take a long time but you can't afford to miss anything with the shorter scans.

I live by spybot search and destroy. It's the best!
I can't remember the URL for it, I think it's safer-networking.org, but you can do a google search for it and it will turn up.
I had the same spyware for a hot minute, I think I got it from the front page of slap when it first came back up. CURSE YOU SLAP, CURSE YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL
-
check these two links, both do the job well. one is for virus and the other is for spyware shit.

AHHHHH Im getting that bullshit right now... its ironic as fuck that im getting pop ups for anti-spyware software
-
I have AVG Anti-spyware, do I need anti-virus too or is it the same thing?
And do I need Ad-Aware too?
-
You should have anti-virus too, because they aren't the same. What you were describing is spyware but it's always better to be safe than sorry. I don't have Ad-aware, but I think that it's anti-spyware. But somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I got some nasty adware from visiting some sketchy porn sites awhile ago and I used that spybot search and destroy and it cleared it from my machine.

I tried to get the AVG Anti-Virus and it told me...
"Another anti-virus/security product is currently installed on this computer. It's not advisable to have more than one anti-virus running on the same computer"
Should I delete AVG Anti-Spyware for AVG Anti-Virus?
-
Or should I just get the spybot search and destroy?
-
Actually I was told to use this http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/ (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/) before and it worked.

That seems weird to me... I don't know why it wouldn't be advisable. I have some friends who know more about computers than me, and they have multiple anti-virus/spyware programs installed. I've got two different ones and am happy with it. I'm sure you'd be fine with both.
-
I'm installing...
Now do I have to scan my computer again? It took a couple hours last time...
-
A virus scan and a spyware scan are two different things. So you will have to do a virus scan. How did your spyware scan go?
-
Holy shit man... it found a ton.
-
The way I see it, that's a good thing because you know what the problem was. Was it able to delete/quarantine them all?
-
I deleted the high risk ones... The others are still there until next time I run it again...
Now the anti-virus is running and it's found 19 threats so far...
-
hi, i'm a mac
-
hi, i'm a mac
OMG same!!!!!!!!!
also, delete your cookies, they can be in there too.
-
I woke up today, the scan was finished and there were still some pop-up open...
Then I deleted my cookies and I think I'm okay now...
THANKS EVERYONE!
-
Nevermind... I'm still getting them!
"System alert: Trojan-Spy.Win32@mx"
FUCK!
-
I'M STILL GETTING POP-UPS LIKE CRAZY... THIS SUCKS!
What should I do now? Any ideas?
-
Scan again and delete them all when it finds them. Did you close it after it finished? Mine usually will find them and alert me whenever it notices one, not just when I scan.
-
reformat your computer
-
Try Avast, a free antivirus that is pretty good in my experience

Julian.

I wish I could afford a new pc right now...
I guess I'm fucked. I Scanned it again and deleted everything bad, restarted my computer...
I had created a new user in windows, never signed in... now I can only sign in with that one.
All my settings are gone, my shortcuts too.
This sucks.
-
If you can't access your old stuff then I guess you may as well reformat. Or seek out the help somebody who works with computers for a living, if possible.
-
I appreciate the help, thanks.
-
I think it's all worked out... I got Spybot Search and Destroy and I've having no problems since...
Thanks everyone!
-
Do a system restore to a day your computer didn't have the virus... like the day before you got it if you remember. this worked for my virus and it completely got rid of it without having to reformat your computer.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
Edit: just realised you got it fixed. but if it ever turns up again, this was a simple solution for me. although it might not work if you saved stuff on your comp since u got the virus cause doing a system restore might get rid of some newly saved files.
-
I know you say you've fixed the problem, but to avoid it from happening again, or if it happens again, I would suggest the following:
What browser are you using? If you are using Internet Explorer, I would say stop. Use Firefox. Mozilla, or Opera browsers. The newest I.E. is better than past versions, but I would still suggest Firefox or one of the others before IE.
The best thing to do would probably be for you to back up your important files, like whatever music, video, images, or anything else you don't want to lose, put those files on an external hard drive or burn them to disc and then reinstall your operating system.
You could also consider installing a Linux operating system. Ubuntu is one of the easier ones for people unfamiliar with Linux. You probably don't want to or have time to fuck with Linux though. If you do , look into it. You won't get bullshit pop-ups. That is jsut the beginning though, Linux systems give you much more control, if you are willing to learn how they work.
Avoid shady warez sites and shadier porn sites. Don't just blindly install any download you are offered, this often leads to more problems.
Or you could just buy a Mac.
-
Man, I'm glad you didn't reformat... I just caught this thread.
I definitely agree about your web browser (and anyone else on Windows), Mozilla Firefox has a much smaller risk of getting exploited by malware, adware, or whateverware. Opera is super good too, but if you're used to IE, Firefox might be less of a transition for you.
Anyway, keep AVG as your antivirus software, and keep both Spybot and Adaware. Just make sure to update each program before running a scan (they'll tell you when they want to be updated).
-
Spybot and Crap Cleaner are the only two PC programs you need.

buy a mac!

One last thing, next time you run Spybot or AVG Free, run them in Safe Mode. It helps clean out some bugs that run as active processes (that refuse to be turned off or deleted while in use).
