It seems.
If i remember well, hes kinda hated here.
-
I like that guy, he was nice to me at the Salem, OR skatepark like a decade ago, he pulled up and lurked with Tyler Bledsoe
-
I like him
-
I like him
could see him on Krooked
-
I met him long ago when he was living in his van and he was super nice. I like him.
-
Sebo was already a well established Portland legend when I was going into high school and I just turned 30. Dude has always been the nicest guy to skate with and I never understood the shit he gets on Slap. Hope he is doing well.
-
i could see him on vinyl
-
Was fond of his jumping up and down in Dane Brady’s part
-
Banned 4 flat earthing I heard
-
But yet anyone who TMed him, or sat in the van with him hates him
-
Lakai really blew it letting this guy go…..could have lead to the downfall…..now this….
-
Truly a certified tragic
-
Didn't he get the boot from Lakai because of his ego?

Didn't he get the boot from Lakai because of his ego?
yeah, same with krooked I guess he's a really annoying douche on tour I mean manderson said worst teammate on the bunt if I recall correctly?
-
He left Lakai to ride for Adidas, which never ended up happening.
I hope there's a post-Instagram future for skateboarding in general.
-
I like him
Same - I know he got shit for trick selection (360 shuv smith grind) but him being an artist more than an “athlete” makes me enjoy his skating, beats energy drink hats and beanies.
-
Ditched school once in 2011 and he taught me how to crook at westchester “crookie monster”

My only interaction with Sebo was at the Stay Flared tour stop in Chicago. Everyone was skating the park, but Sebo stayed alone in the parking lot doing flat ground tricks.

Wrong, I was Sebos TM at Stacks.
Sebo is one of the nicest, kindest guys in skateing. And thats the issue.
He's not a cool guy and he's not trying to be a cool guy.
He's so good that he's looking for new things to do on his skateboard and they often come out kinda wacky and he get's attacked for it.
Trust me on this. Many of your favorite pros have egos as fragile as a cheap wine glass. They are the issue, not Sebo.

There is two people calling each other assholes.
They could both be assholes or it could be neither.

Manderson defo gives NorCal fragile cool boy vibes. Which is understandable given he's made a career off of like three tricks . I bet he hates the fuck out of Diego Todd

I met Sebo a handful of times. Didn't really kick it with the guy but he seemed chill to me. I can see how he may not vibe with a lot of teams or vice versa. Him and Walker Ryan seemed like they were homies, both insanely talented, but never got fully supported in the skate industry. And, I mean, if you don't need Instagram for promoting yourself / a business / a product etc... then that shit sucks anyway.

Good for him

For some reason I have an insanely hard time distinguishing walker ryan, Ryan lay, and sebo walker. Walker Ryan is the book guy switch bs 360 flip. Ryan Lay is on sci fi and does running and wears glasses sometimes. Sebo walker I honestly couldn’t tell you what he looks like or anything he’s done. I just wasn’t paying close attention to skating during when those guys were coming up, I was starting to check out for a while.

I have only ever heard such good interactions with him.

I met sebo like a week after I moved to portland. Literally turned a corner and bumped into him. Told him I was a fan blah blah. He immediately invited me to come skate down the street with him. Had some sessions with him over the years. Nice guy. Very humble and complimentary. Skill wise he’s as good as ever, without question one of the best skaters in the world. He deserves better.

Is Ventura NorCal?
Most certainly is not. North of LA and south of Santa Barbara which is basically the northern coastal point of Southern California before you get to the Central Coast region
-
Ventura is just as so cal as anywhere else. Curren caples is from there for christ’s sake

Ventura county hate is so unjustified. Skated with all of em over the years and they are all extremely nice (except sector 8 Shane, guy put his hands on a few sub16 year old kids and the issues Moose has had over the years). It’s called ventucky for a reason. Curren, some of the limo people and the Andersons are more LA types than anything. Everything north of newbury might as well be kern county. Except Oxnard

I live on the Central Coast. Perhaps this comes from bias, since I was born and raised out here, but I grew up with the understanding the Central Coast is the dividing line between Northern and Southern California. In my opinion, anything north of SLO county (Valley doesn't count, though one could maybe say anything south of Bakersfield is Southern Cali) is Northern Cali, and SLO County included going south is Southern California.
To give some perspective, when I was a kid, my parent's would sometimes drive us down to LA to Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, etc. Sometimes, when we'd go, my parents were able to get a "southern california" discount, with our county being the furthest north on the coast to qualify.
I love Manderson's skating, and have faint memory of enjoying some of his interviews. With that said, remember that all these guys are human beings. They have their faults, and putting them up on a petestal and thinking, "Oh this guy doesn't fuck with that dude, that dude must be the worst!" really discredits what the actual case is. Theres a lot more nuance to life than that.

Interesting perspective from someone who lives on the Central Coast. There are some towns in the Central Valley, like Sac, that are both in the Central Valley and in NorCal, but I think of the Central Coast as entirely distinct (i.e. no part of the Central Coast is part of NorCal or SoCal), but maybe you think of it differently? NorCal/socal lifer, driven around the state a ton. Central Coast region feels very intuitive to me and SLO feels very much in it. Big Sur isn’t NorCal so would also disagree with north of slo = NorCal. Monterey is a fairer argument to make, but also don’t agree with it.
-
@UL8 Glad I checked this before going to bed!
Ooo! Someone who has more experience driving up and down the coast. I've done it, but maybe twice have I gone all the way up Northern California, though I've been down to San Diego plenty.
I really love the point you brought up about Sac, that is distinctly Central Valley, and in Norcal. I loved it so much that I pulled up ol Google Maps. Forgive my previous statements, I feel like I'm only able to communicate what feels like impulse right now.
Honestly, what you said about north of Monterey is more accurate. Which after seeing on Maps, triggered a memory of the last time I was in Monterey and feeling silly because I never considered it central coast till I visited and I think the aquarium was saying that so I couldn't really fight that notion.
In regards to your remark of Central Coast being distinct, I have to say thats well said. I'm suffering from some executive dysfuction right now. I wish I could articulate more on my understanding of what you said, but make sense when you look at a map. Also, makes me feel like a dumb small town hick, forgetting how big a stretch you could consider the central coast.
To give myself some credit, you haven't been able to drive through Big Sur North of Gorda for what? Ten years. I can easily picture SB being the end of the Central Coast, because you see the coast from the 101 a that point. I dont think of it North till I'm in Monterey.

Never thought that my uninformed hyperbole on here would make me learn something. "Central Coast" is a term I firmly associated with Australia until now, had no idea that existed in Cali.
Also obviously Manderson has more than three tricks if you count the switch and barrier versions as their own instance ;)

Deluxe doesn't have the privilege to be an enterprise made of 100% cool persons with 100% Kindness towards 100% Humans. Once you don't click with one of the parole leader , the guy who's talking the most and who looks cool , you are the Outlaw , the rebel .Add the fact you like books and arts with the good education , Phelpers addicts would put you out . I’m from ca and I had never heard of central coast until I watched tv in a Santa Barbara hotel room and I saw those crossover local tv ads that would say it. Side note: it’s fun to tell SB people they’re Central Coast. They don’t like it
The times I’ve spent in CC near the beach, I found it far superior because it wasn’t overcrowded or over developed. Hopefully that hasn’t changed

CCS was in SLO stands for Central Coast Skateshop...actually was a legit shop in 98 when i first found it
I lived in Pismo beach and SLO around 2001 for a few years, and went to SB almost every month. The surf in pismo is kinda shit, but heard it has its good days...there were a bunch of beaches in the area so plenty of pickings if you surfed. Central Coast area of California is weird, you will find conservatives in lifted trucks with surfboards.
also yea lol at the California devolution discussions in threads

CennieCoast Bogan Cahnt! :) I'm fully talking shit on Manderson, his skating just isn't for me because it feels too mich like everything about it should make me love it. Like it's too curated for my tastes almost. And just not very high impact for all the macho trucker hat bravado. It's missing the goofball sauce of an Andrew Allen or Aaron Loreth or the gnarly talent of a Hugo Boserupp or Mason Silva and the holy union of both that is Diego Todd. He's like the West Coast Dick Rizzo isn't he?

-
How far north do you have to go before NorCal turns into Jefferson?
fuck, that's actually a good question uhhhhhh maybe like weed or redding?
-
Ok now we're talking. I lived in Mount Shasta (Siskiyou County)for years. Deep in Jefferson. Shasta County officially offered to join the Jefferson movement if Redding could be the capital. That offer was declined. This was all before WW2. The unofficial state includes far northern California and southern Oregon. The state flag features 2 X's to represent the locals being double crossed by far away state governments. A major issue was a lack of road infrastructure. People wanted to build roads to the many forests for the purpose of logging. The movement died after Pearl Harbor, with the country wanting to show no signs of internal division. The movement has been re-energized in the last few decades by all sorts of back to the land folks and such. The far right tries to co- opt the flag and stuff but they can't cause there's tons of hippies and tree huggers wearing it too. Blending it with the Grateful Dead logo and having Jefferson cannabis festival and stuff. If you go to Mount Shasta get some water straight out the source and tell the punk wall I miss it

Thanks for humoring me : ) Your post definitely made me think about my conception of things as well so appreciate that! I nerd out so hard on this stuff (regional and especially neighborhood boundaries in cities/towns) it's honestly kind of embarrassing (friends make fun of me). I find the discrepancies in perception to be fascinating and think there's an aspect that's somewhat personal/perceptual even if you can create rough boundaries. Always curious to hear how other people think about it.
And I don't think you're dumb or a small town hick for forgetting the size. I constantly forget how big parts of this state are.

But yet anyone who TMed him, or sat in the van with him hates him
Wrong, I was Sebos TM at Stacks.
They are the issue, not Sebo.
watched his welcome to Stacks part an unhealthy amount of times

i'm of instagram too and i feel like my mental health is thanking me for it

This is not Ryan Lay thread but he
explains in his Nine club that younger generations don't skateanymore , difficult to find youngsters rippers who dedicate their live , still are but less thant before .
Gen Z refuse certain codes of this Dude industry with no behaviour , when being nice and kind with people becomes a problem . Better to grow a mustache with flannel killing rails these days . I don't even mention guy who is reading books and inventing tricks. I feel for Sebo .

Earlier response in the thread, gaviota being the beach before the tunnel at the end of Goleta.
Can we confidently attribute Sebo and his grip art to the whole welcome skateboards/hesh era of having fun griptape?
Natas and Gonz were doing grip art 40 years ago
Slap favorite Dylan Reider always had grip art from like 09-12

Sebo has been of instagram and now he’s about to drop a part… it’s going to be amazing.
Half of the Krooked team just does ride-on grinds. Sebo will nollie backside flip a triple set beautifully and people will still hate.
-
stoked to see this new sebo part

Dylan's Oblow-Stencil grip phase was a good look for the times. I think that was Rasa Libre era mostly and carried into some of the AWS. HBHS alum, I spent too much time at the park 04-08; he definitely had it then.
Those stencils were pretty refined in comparison to what else you saw though. Everyone had tip-to-tail graffiti ala DecoColor markers.
Sebo had his own pro markers, or am I making that up?

I think BA had his "line" on Sharpie.
