Yea, a fresh face.  McCain's concession speach was the best one he's done, which is the way it always seems to go.  Guard comes down and they act like a real person.

Let's see how it goes now.

Today I was talking to a classmate about Obama and he compared him to Hitler's rise to power through the usage of propaganda. I don't believe this but it has had me thinking.

If this was the John McCain throughout his campaign, he actually might've won. But fuck that. VIVA OBAMA!!!!!!

I'm so psyched. I've never seen so many people get this emotional over an election. Definitely remarkable and a night to remember. Driving home tonight from my parents at around 10pm, there was noticeably a lot less people on the streets...I'm assuming because everyone was staying in to watch the results.

I think this will do a lot for America's international reputation which hasn't been doing too well these past years.

After being in Europe earlier this year, and seeing how every country there was seriously at least 3 people that would always ask if we were voting for Obama, it became clear that this just needed to happen to save the face of the US everywhere else.
All of the taxi drivers asked my Mom and Dad, most wanted Hilary.

It feels fucking awesome, especially since I live in a battleground state. At first he was losing, but the MSNBC dudes were like "Fairfax County has yet to report" and then it kept creeping up and up and up...
He won my county, though, which is rad...

To every American who took the effort to vote, and vote responsibly, I'd like to sincerely thank you on behalf of the world who could not vote in this election.
Americans especially don't understand the power of their citizenship and how the entire world is effected by how their own country is governed but it impacts every corner of the planet. I hate to put that much power in the hands of one nation, but no one can deny it.
From a packed bar in mountain town British Columbia Canada not a dry eye was in the house as President Obama gave his inauguration speech - and every American should recognize how much the world has invested in the possibilities of this administration.
So thank you.

Also, my Canadian father is in NYC right now and he stole his republican business associates ID and voted for Obama without any consideration that he could be incarcerated for a serious amount of time. Quality.

i was watching abc and as charles gibson counted down 10, 9, 8, 7... for when the polls closed here in the west...i sat up listened closely and he said

we can now project that barack obama will win ca, wa, OR and is the next president of the united states

i was overcome with a new sensation that i hadn't felt... beyond happiness or satisfaction

i can't describe it...but seeing this man become president really affected me

a new hope rushed over me that the america that i learned about as a kid in the 80's, "the greatest country in the world," and the one that my parents emigrated to from central america and placed all their hopes in....

still exist

a beautiful and unforgettable night....the only other unforgettable moment i have in my adult life is 9/11...unforgettable for the wrong reasons

tonight for everything that i feel is right...thank you barack obama and my fellow citizens for this extraordinary occasion

I think its amazing that people in other countries are just as excited for our new president as we are.  This really was the most monumental election of all time.

it was really important to send a message to the rest of the world about the american people and how we felt about bush and the last 8 years. i'm glad that the republicans not only got stomped in presidental election but in everyway they could get stomped since the last election 2 years ago when they lost congress. here in houston on a local level, so many judges and other local politicians have lost their jobs because of all the new voters who voted for obama via party line. normally texas goes by over 10 points but this time it was closer to 5 points and tons of texas republicans are out of work. this will undoubtably cause a lot of pressure for change within the republican party and hopefully at the next election, they will put a new kind of politics out there that will rise to this precedence that Barack has created when it comes to changing the game and coruption in our system and favoring pragmatism over idealism and voters over corporations. the democrats getting stomped so bad, for so long definitely had a huge positive effect on their party and it's changed the game for the better and i think the same will be true for the republicans in the long term.

the people really do still have the power and the system still works.

- crack down on asymmetrical balances of trade with china and mexico.  america should start actually making stuff for export (besides weapons and agricultural products) instead of just importing from around the world.  fuck teh idea of a free trade agreement with colombia.

- scale waaaaaay back in iraq; move some troops to afghanistan.   get rid of 60% of your still enormous nuclear weapons arsenal and cancel all plans for further nuclear weapon development.  put the savings into rsearch on sustainable energy

- only offer funds to the Big 3 automakers if they promise within 10 years to come out with cars that transcend the steel-and-gas pattern set down in the 1890s.  jack up fuel efficiency standards in the meantime.

- with gas prices having dropped in the last while, now is the time to institute a 2 cent per gallon national gas tax, with all proceeds going to research on sustainable energy.

- shut down guantanamo and all the other secret rendition and torture centers.  cancel the borderline fascist "patriot act"

- raise taxes on the rich and corporations; keep things at they are for the middle and working classes.

- institute a national electoral system, instead of letting states run irregular, politicized schemes.  borrow canada's model of campaign financing so that whoever comes next doesnt need to raise half a billion dollars to run a campaign

- a few serious problems i can suggest no simple solution for:  $10.5 trillion debt:  how much does it cost to pay the interest on that thing?  $1 trillion deficit next year.  health care.  old age security costs.  shabby education system.

good luck.   looking forward to palin vs obama in 2012

I just watched the full speech, and wow, goosebumps through the whole thing.  I don't know his platform top to bottom or anything, but I definitely feel like something great has just happened.  The future of the whole world seems a little brighter, I'm stoked.

- raise taxes on the rich and corporations; keep things at they are for the middle and working classes.

one last thing, copied from the globe and mail:

Quote
Another early move that will be more closely watched in Canada than anywhere else will be whether Mr. Obama restores what Ottawa regarded as its place at the head of the line by ensuring that the first meeting with a foreign leader is the Canadian Prime Minister. Mr. Bush opted instead for the Mexican President.

lately you guys have been treating us -- your closest friend and business partner for the past 100 years -- pretty shabbily.  and its been hard to talk straight with you about it because your behaviour has been so erratic...  well lets face it, "borderline psycho" is probably a better term for it.  please please, for your own good, start getting your shit in order

He's got one hell of a speech writer to be dropping quasi-historical bombs like that (eloquent too).  Made me feel proud to be an American (if I was an American boi).

It's hard to imagine the effect that having a popular and more populist president will have on the states.  Having a leader that is respected (by most) has gotta have a huge impact on people, especially kids!  Think of the children!  If your parents and everyone around is talking shit on your president and their administration, that's gotta shake what little faith a youngster might have in their country.

I would vote for you, Ben. As far as Obama is concerned, this is the first time in my adult life I have felt some pride for the USA and I sincerely hope he can institute most of the policies he has suggested. Ending the (illegal) war in Iraq and investing in sustainable energy and education are particularly high on my list.

Some people I was watching the results with last night were surprised how much international interest there was. If you go anywhere outside the US, people care about it because we have such an impact on everything. I feel like we did something yesterday we can be proud of as a nation.

and it's sad because they used to care because we stood for something

Hopefully his administration works in benifit of the American people's welfare and well-being.'

People went (rightfully) crazy in Seattle. I was at an election party watching everything and right after his speech there were maybe 100 people in the streets and I thought that'd be it. Me and my fiancé get in our car to go home and we get to a main intersection and it was just a MOB of people. Screaming, some crying. It took me 5 minutes to move 100 feet. Everyone was pounding on the car, giving us high fives. Reaching in the windows to hug us. People screaming "where are you going?!?!? Don't leave!!!" and us screaming back "We're parking!!!!!".

These pictures hardly do justice. I took some video footage too I'll try to upload tonight.

Your classmate probably listens to Michael Savage--that tugjob's been making that comparison for about a year now.

What an amazing night! After me and my girl found out Barack had won we went down to our local Bar. Well, as it turns out. The bar owner was a McCain supporter and he had his Republican friends there. The guys were real drunk and bitter and were looking for a reason to get into a fight. They even turned off the TV minutes before Barack's speach. Me and my girl said "fuck this" and left.
We crossed the river into Downtown just in time to watch the speach at a Democrat Rally. The place was packed but completely quiet as Barack gave his speach. I got chills hearing him speak and my girlfriend even cried. Afterwards the place lit up and everyone partied down. It didn't matter if you were black or white, friends or complete strangers.  Last night we all partied and danced together like a big happy family.

I stayed up until about 4.30am this morning (UK time) glued to the BBC watching the counter go up and up until it became clear that Obama had won it. I woke up a few hours later to call in sick to work and went back to bed. When I woke up I spent the rest of the afternoon watching his acceptance speech and footage from all around the country and the world of people celebrating...amazing. I feel so glad to have watched it all go down, even if it was was from my sofa and not out on the streets.

It's strange, the only feeling that I can equate all of this to is when a good friend that you've known for years stops hanging out with you because they've got new friends (all of whom are complete assholes) and you stop talking...and then, months or years down the line, they call you up out of the blue to apologise, make amends and to ask if you want to hang out again...and you quickly forget why you stopped talking in the first place.

Thanks America....we missed you!  :)

CHICAGO—According to witnesses, a loud black man approached a crowd of some 4,000 strangers in downtown Chicago Tuesday and made repeated demands for change.

"The time for change is now," said the black guy, yelling at everyone within earshot for 20 straight minutes, practically begging America for change. "The need for change is stronger and more urgent than ever before. And only you—the people standing here today, and indeed all the people of this great nation—only you can deliver this change."
Enlarge Image Black Guy

The black guy is oddly comfortable demanding change from people he's never even met.

It is estimated that, to date, the black man has asked every single person in the United States for change.

"I've already seen this guy four times today," Chicago-area ad salesman Blake Gordon said. "Every time, it's the same exact spiel. 'I need change.' 'I want change.' Why's he so eager for all this change? What's he going to do with it, anyway?"

After his initial requests for change, the black man rambled nonstop on a variety of unrelated topics, calling for affordable health care, demanding that the government immediately begin withdrawing troops from Iraq, and proposing a $75 billion economic stimulus plan to create new jobs.

"What a wacko," Schaumburg, IL resident Patrick Morledge said. "And, of course, after telling us all about how he had the ability to magically fix everything, he went right back to asking for change. Typical."

"If he's really looking for change, he's got the wrong guy," Morledge added.

Reports indicate that the black man has been riding from city to city across the country, asking for change wherever he goes. Citizens in Austin, TX said they spotted the same guy standing on the street Friday, shouting far-fetched ideas about global warming. Cleveland residents also reported seeing him in a local park, wildly gesticulating and quoting from the Bible. And last week, patrons at the Starlight Diner in Cheyenne, WY claimed that the black man accosted them while they were eating, repeatedly requesting change.

"I saw him walk in and I knew he was headed straight for our table," said mother of three Gladys Davies. "He just stood there smiling at us for a while, and asked how our food tasted. Then he went and did the same thing at the next table over. The nerve of some people."

Those who encountered the black man Tuesday said he engaged in erratic behavior, including pointing at random people in the crowd and desperately saying he needs their help, going up to complete strangers and hugging them, and angrily claiming that he is not looking for just a little bit of change, but rather a great deal of change, and that he wants it "right now."

"I'll be honest, when that black guy said he would 'stop at nothing' to get change, it kind of scared me," local mechanic Phil Nighbert said. "Just leave me alone."

Though many were taken aback by the black man's brazen demands, some, such as Jackson, MS's Holly Moser, sympathized with him. She gave the black man credit for boldly standing up and asking every last person around him for change.

"I told him I'd give him some if I saw him later, even though I probably won't," Moser said. "Very nice man, though."

Most, however, ignored his requests.

"I'm a hardworking American who pays his taxes, and the last thing I need is some guy on the street demanding change from me," said William Overkamp, a Springfield, IL gun-shop owner.

It was amazing to say the least. Something I look forward to telling my kids about.

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit man, has anyone else here ever sat home alone on a new years eve and done jack shit, and just had the feeling that everywhere around you there was a fuckin rockin party you were missing out on?

last night I had that same eerie feeling, and after that post, it's been confirmed. Now I wish I'dda bussed it up to Seattle for the festivities, be stoked you were stuck in the middle of it, Anthony, looks like it was an amazing time

People went nuts here too, I think its awesome how stoked everyone is.
hopefully he lives up to everyone's expectations

I marched through Burlington with like 4000 students, it was pretty rad.  Little disappointed there wasn't a tractor trailer at the end full of kegs.

When was the last time a Presidential-Elect caused mass celebration on this scale? Not just nationally, but in our allied countries as well? Serious question, as I can't recall anything like this in my lifetime, and I can recall the Reagan era pretty clearly. Any historians in the house?

Regardless... one thing about this election is that I don't feel like I'm saying "hey, fuck you Republicans, hahahaah". I've read that he's interested in creating a bipartisan cabinet... and as an atheist (a demonized thing to be down south), I'm used to voting for Christians, but never one that ever said anything like this:

The edit is weird, but I've watched this about ten times and it's better every time.
