Title: Zero Two Sneakers and its demise??
Post by: earlygrab on March 09, 2011, 04:57:45 PM
Anybody here have any insight into whatever happened to the guy who started Zero Two sneakers? I know he got caught as a fraud and called it quits but I'm curious if he's still in the industry or not? Dude promised me a job in 93, so I drove to cali from NY and when I got here the dude ducked me the whole time. Never heard from him again. Now that I'm older and not some naive kid, I'd like to kick him in the balls.

I have the book that picture is from "Made For Skate", I believe it basically said that the dudes running it weren't even skateboarders or vegetarian/vegan. I believe the riders jumped shipped when these facts came out or they folded. All I know is the ad with the stripped cows head is gnarly. "There are no soul's in our soles" Not 100% on it but I believe thats what the book said.

All I know is the ad with the stripped cows head is gnarly.

That ad made me an instant vegetarian. What an impressionable boy I was. I had two pairs of the sneakers. Wore the soulless soles right through.

A skate shoe company made by carnivores who didn't skate and were only in it for the money? These guys were ahead of their time.

I checked the book a few minutes ago and that was the reasons, def cop this book if you don't have it. Its a super good read filled with tons of great photo's and stories but here's an excerpt from the book about Zero Two (I'd scan it and the gnarly ad's but I don't have a scanner, sorry)

"Endorsing the message of cruelty-free footwear was an all-star vegan team consisting of Ed Templeton, Mike Vallely, and Brian Lotti. But as it turned out : "The company didn't last because it was a joke and as soon as Ed and I figured it out we bailed", said Vallely. Templeton agreed: "Th guy who made that company was not even a vegetarian, nor did he see his shoe as a skateboarding shoe!"

Then it goes on to the rise and fall of Sheep,(which is now back again I think)

Really good book, bummed there wasn't a section on Nadia but Rec's, Sens,Genetics,Link and a bunch of other flash in the pan companies got a feature

these shoes were made out of velcro right?

I wasn't around for these, but they look interesting. Ollie Guards? Does anyone remember "Ollie Armor"? Those things worked but made your shoes tough to bend.

DC and Sole Tech both had vegan/synthetic skate shoes that were actually good in the mid 90s. Try to find a vegan skate shoe now that isn't vulcanized with a canvas upper that rips in 5 minutes and you'll have a hell of a time. Sheeps were crap.

sheep shoes were crap. They were like trying to skate in wooden shoes, i had a blister after every session till they died.

zero two's had a velcro surface and came with a small sheet of velcro to put were you need protection. the velcro protection was pretty much a useless gag. everyone bought them because they were veggy friendly and had a nice minimal look, which was hard to find at the time.

A guy came in the shop a week or two ago asking if we carried Sheep shoes. In retrospect, maybe I should have offered him the 4CEs or the Saviers that are tucked away in the basement.

I got flowed some Zero Two shoes by the dude because I did free ads in a zine I did.I really liked the shoe a lot.  They where working on a Kevlar shoe when the company folded. Ed Templeton told me that the dude lied to them and said he was vegan and that I think Mike V got him eating a burger and that was the end.
The low top canvas shoe that Sheep made was on of my all time favorites, I remember being so siked when FTC got them in. I am hoping that is the model that ES is redoing.
And fuck you too the haters!!

Here is some vegan shoe trivia which company was Ed Templton supposed to have a pro model shoe on before going to Sheep??

I think he was from Indiana, my memory is fuzzy. He lived with me in Syracuse for a year before I lost contact. He had a good idea but the execution was blah. He was more interested in being a vegan and music than skating.

I lived there for 6 months in 93, I first lived with DJ Rose and then me and my then girlfriend got an apartment by some projects and I would skate over to Everson. I remember watching the first issue of 411 at some dudes apartment with like 15 skaters. Do you know DJ, Guav, John Mckaig and those guys? There was one dude whose name I can't recall, he was a really good skater, I remember he almost switched ollied the steps are Everson one day, at the time it was so groundbreaking.

Yo Vegan Shawn and Early Grab! Not to get off topic but Small world type stuff here but I was born, raised, and still in Cuse, been skating Everson and all the clasic Cuse spots since I was 14, I'm 27 now, so depending on the timeline I may have seen yall there or skated with you. What time were you guys living in the 3?

Drive Dave aka Sunspot Dave was awesome, I loved his shop, still have some old stickers and gear from there, and his shop boards were the best ever. He had the sick old school World and Plan B decks on the wall and the used gear bin there saved me and my grom friends alot back in the day. He actually ended up winning 1st place in America's Funniest Home Videos and closed shop and moved to Colorado I believe. Thats when Hardpact took over big time, but sadly we lost them after a few years. All the Hardpact guys like Barry and Roach were solid, awesome dudes.

I got all the classic Cuse vids from the EVS crew to the newer generations, some were even had filming by Fat Bill, considering he was a Cuse local, now he's big timing.

I came into skating when the OG EVS crew like Griffin,Healy,Goose,Dave,A-Dog and all the others were just fading out or just making guest appearances here and there, was skating everyday during the "Rebels"/"Reg's" era, Sal, Perrier,Lil Nick,Pat,Burch, etc and up to now, haven't been skating much due to slipped discs in my back though.

Anyways craziness yall lived in Cuse, gets me hyped up people have gotten to shred The Eve(now skate stopped but we popped some of em off) along with all the classic spots. If your interested click the vimeo link in my sig and see some new Eve/Cuse footy from my boy. We've had a bunch of pro's show up randomly too, Rodrigo Tx front tailed the Herald Journal Rail, The Blind team came down to Eve once unannounced and James Craig switch hardflipped the Pink Gap which is the sickest shit to ever go down over that gap,The swquence was in a Big Brother, I wish there was footy of said trick(Cliff if your reading this let me know please! I'm dying to see it!), I think Kalis SSBSTS'd the high ledge, Sean Mullendore kickflip back tailed it, Getz used the big red sculpture as a jump ramp and kickflipped off it, BEASTMODE, alot of pro's have brought the heat down to EVE, the old videos got Jamie,Ethan Fowler, and a bunch of others skating it.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just hyped on my hometown and hyped when people know about Syracuse lil secret that is the Everson. Maybe if I get the chance I'll upload the old and new Cuse video's From "The Wandering" to "Up The Regs"

LIVEfromthe3one5 - I was only there for a short time (6months) in 1993. I would love to see some of those Syracuse videos, that would be sick. Last time I skated in Syracuse was with Driver Dave at some parking garage, luckily we parked inside because some hoods where walking down the ramp to jump us when we drove out waving at them.
All that shit that you said went down at Everson sounds so sick, I would always catch a glimpse in a video now and again and get hyped. I remember it being a close knit skate scene with lots of ripping kids.

Damn ALOT of Syracuse heads coming out the woodwork! Even if you were here a little while or lived here forever like me its all good, Like I said I've been out of the scene for a minute, trying to get alot of medical shit cleared before I can skate again but yea it was really closed knit scene, but after losing Sunspot, then Hardpact, we took some serious blows and had a few pop up over night shops, now we really only have Zumiez and this place called Black Mamba which is an indoor park at a mall with a shop, we also have an outdoor park now, all I know is from what I heard the tight knittness is pretty much gone, basically everyones got their own crew and everyone sticks to their own crew(not a big deal because everyone had their own crews) just now no one gives props to anyone unless they're part of the crew, I could be wrong seeing this is all second hand info I've gotten. I hope its not like I've heard because it was if you did something ill,it didnt matter who you ran with, you got props. Peep the vimeo link in my sig for newer Everson Cusetown footy and peep http://www.evsdesigns.com/home/ (http://www.evsdesigns.com/home/) its Driver Dave's website back when he still ran Sunspot, the boards work and you can watch footage from the old Cuse videos I spoke of (Forgot he uploaded the whole thangs and not just clips like he had). Also I believe in Fireworks this dude bombs a big ass Cuse hill on University and eats shit and busts his teeth and for some reason it ended up in CKY 1. Unfortunately, for the site, you can't order his awesome shop decks anymore, they were seriously amazing.

And Hammy I believe he went right from Zero Two to Sheep

Damnnn, I remember going to Sunspot! Wasn't that place kinda across from Hungry Charlies? I haven't followed much on Syracuse scene in a while since none of my friends that still live there skate, most have migrated to NYC or Albany. I've got a copy of "Up the Regs" I picked up years ago, which has some great Everson skating in it.

Yea I miss Sunspot alot man, it was across from Hungry Charlies, it was over this restaurant/bar so it was tucked away unless you knew what was up, I still rock my Sunspot shirt, that shits a hood classic for me. I haven't followed the Cuse scene in a min and I live here, hopefully Ill be cleared to skate by summer and I can start ripping again, Now Eve is like Love Park, gotta watch out for secruity and police(doesn't help the police station is right next door to Eve). speaking of the University area they built this amazing marble plaza but skatestopped the hell out of it, then the other day I went to hit up the smoke shop and saw they skate stopped the Marshall Ledges. From Eve to University they clamping down, at least Eve got its stoppers popped off due to some friends. We still got alot of nice underground spots and hills for days.

I skated and partied with the Reg's, they used to think our crew had beef with them back then but we were just fucking with them, I went to the premier and got a copy of "Up the Regs" that shit is so old though, me and my friends are trying to get a video together because its been a minute since there was a new Cuse tape, there's some internet clips like from Gnartifact.tv (cuse site) and the clip I got in the sig, but we got some plans to drop some real heat this summer. Cuse has alot of raw and ill talent just no real exposure.

A sidenote on "Up The Regs" the dude with the last part Sal, I saw a sequence of him in Skateboarder maybe backside flipping the Brooklyn Banks rail, the hard way, like alley oop'd that shit. i thought that was ill as hell, Sal always been a beast and a cool as dude.
