Title: Ken Block vs San Francisco
Post by: Fongstarr. on July 09, 2012, 10:05:05 AM
DC SHOES: KEN BLOCK'S GYMKHANA FIVE: ULTIMATE URBAN PLAYGROUND; SAN FRANCISCO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LuDN2bCIyus#ws)

I know people will think this is whatever but since I live in SF, I thought it was cool. Had no idea this even was taped here. Would have liked to see it in person.

cause people around here seem to think everything besides skateboarding and riding motorcycles is for kooks.

Block's car control is pretty gnarly, as is an AWD Fiesta

Well none of this shit makes me want to get a car and start drifting. I actually found it odd though with that X-Games comment but not so much with Dave Mirra and Travis Pastrami Sandwich but more so Bucky cause I didn't even know he does that shit. Still....stick little edit munis the dumb viral ads at the end.

That was super sick, thanks.  Nice to know that he is actually an excellent driver.  I just figured he was mediocre, but was able to buy his way into this.

So, what do you suppose it costs to shut that bridge down?  No to mention half of the city?

The difference is this:

Ken Block, while nowhere near the best Rally driver in the world, still competes in the WRC, the highest tier of international rally racing. I agree that no one gives a fuck about X-games rallying; however, if you know motorsports, you know how difficult real off-road rallying is.

These little commercials that Block does are really only half about his driving ability, while the other half is just the cinematography and all the work that went in to making the video look like it does - made to look like he blasted through a closed off San Francisco, but it was filmed over 4 days, with obvious cuts, edits, re-shoots, etc.

This video is the automotive equivalent of the Austyn Gillette 'Quik' video.

Can you even drive yet? Any sort of bullshit car "racing" where you pay a ton of money to convert your car and then a ton of money to shut down a city is as lame as it gets. Its rich men playing and its stupid.
I've always found that people who talk about how awesome they are at driving or how awesome somebody else is are fucking dorks. Thanks for helping to confirm my theory even more.

1) yes, I can drive
2) this isn't racing
3) he has sponsors to pay for the car
4) filmmakers shut down parts of cities all the time
5) It's dorky to talk about driving skills, but not dorky to post on a message board about the skills someone has skateboarding or even how you cool you think a certain skater is when you've never met them?

It'd be a lot easier for you just to say "I don't get all the fuss about people who drive cars. It's just not for me."

That same way you get pissed when ordinances and laws are passed prohibiting skateboarding, and the feeling that people just don't get what you do and why you do it...well, guess the shoe is on the other foot? Or some other expression.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Did someone touch you as a child? The shit he was doing in that car was undeniably awesome. You can't tell me that you never imagined blasting airs in a car over the San Francisco streets. We can't like it because it's a rich man's game? I guess I better stop enjoying golf too. I hope that was paid for out of Ken Block's own self-aggrandizement fund and not the DC marketing budget, because that was the most costly and least effective promotional video I've ever seen.

You sound like an old man who spends his time reminiscing about yesteryear and the 'good ol' days'.

Besides, there's no such thing as "old fast muscle". Hate to break it to you, but they are pretty much all slow by today's standards.

You should hate golf for entirely different reasons. Golf just sucks. The point is that it seems like everybody who has access to one of those zillion dollar cars suddenly becomes a professional and expert with one. Its pretty fucking stupid. The idea that you find me embarassing is fine, you consistently come off as some fat kid who probably doesn't even skate, a briden type of sorts.

Imagine having enough money to rent a city.

And then deciding there is nothing better to do with that money than proceed renting that city, and drive through it in a tiny car doing tiny circles.

For once, I agree with you for the most part. Dude isn't so hot in WRC but at least his name helps bring attention to the US side of things. If people don't realize it's done for the sake of entertainment, then they're regular. It's not like they claim he's the world's best or some super talented driver. And obviously it isn't done in one take (which would be very impressive) but it's still fun to watch. Who wouldn't want to just rip around the city streets doing shit like this?

My only complaint was when Travis Pastrana and the "trolleys" showed up, because my first thought was "I bet he's gonna do donuts around them..." and sure enough he did. Aside from that, I loved it. The whole flying sideways in the air part was probably my favorite haha.

I'm not trying to take sides in this, but your argument is kind of flawed. I'm kind of confused though. Does it become stupid once rich men take part in it, or is that an added stupid-ness? How is it any different than a poor man playing with a skateboard? We all have our hobbies. Some people can afford more expensive ones. It wasn't a video of himself talking about how good he is at driving. And to say anyone that talks about how good he is at driving are "fucking dorks" is hard to understand, seeing as most of us talk about how good poor men are at playing with skateboards. I'm just assuming you have some underlying hate for automotive racing or something.  You're just coming off the "STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE" type of personality right now.

Also, that video you posted is an incredibly shallow misrepresentation of that culture. It's like someone who doesn't know anything about skateboarding watching the X-Games and saying "I've seen them skateboarders on the x-games tv show and they are all a bunch of kids playing with toys and it's stupid!" My point is, you can come up with a better argument than that, Gipper.

That's cool...I just think that the video seems more focused on promoting Ken Block's sweet driving abilities than DC's products. I guess it's good if you can get 44 million people to associate your brand with that kind of "ridiculousness" but I didn't really know what they were trying to get me to buy after watching that.

My point is that anybody can do that...if they had enough money. Somehow everybody who has enough money can, which is why I am not impressed. Its not solely based on the money, its based off of the fact that the only thing you seem to need to get good at it is access to one of those little stunt cars. Skateboarding is highly accessible, and only the top skaters of the huge group of people doing it go pro, so its not comparable at all.
Actually, my opinion was "this sucks," everybody else is trying to convince me that its awesome, but its not.

I was gonna hate, then I watched it. I see it as a tribute to this, and that's cool with me.

Bullitt Car Chase (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wD64vlMxLA#)

If Danny Way is gonna be Evel Kinevel, then Ken Block might as well try to be Steve McQueen.

Because of that video I looked up and learned about the history of the word "hoon," which I thought was cool.

Someone up there compared this to the Austyne "Quik" video, which I saw as being a lot of pointing a camera on a jib at marginalised people. Though this car video can be seen as a gross use of resources, I think it was put together pretty well for a production like this... Matrix-style bullshit aside.

That's cool...I just think that the video seems more focused on promoting Ken Block's sweet driving abilities than DC's products. I guess it's good if you can get 44 million people to associate your brand with that kind of "ridiculousness" but I didn't really know what they were trying to get me to buy after watching that.

Then what is a skate video?

and who says you're the target market?  this video does the rounds on every street car racing sites and more; 44 million muscle bros do not care about DC being core or sponsoring wes kremer

leetgeek (your name is shitty and lame even if meant as ironic. There is nothing funny about it) Briden was a fat piece of shit who admitted to never skating, but regularly posting on a skateboard messageboard. Great role model

Ouch, so scathing. I can't believe Reagan doesn't like my name and doesn't approve of people who I like. What am I thinking? Briden is so fat!

Just because there is a limited amount of people that can participate in an activity, that doesn't mean one can't be good at it. Very few people can get into any type of racing, but I assure you, the top of the field are amazing at what they do and are at a skill level far out reach for most people. I'm not saying Ken Block is the cream of the crop by any means, but I am saying he is very good. Let me put this in a way that you might understand. Ken Block is better at driving than you are at skateboarding. To call something lame because a particular person has the means to do it while others don't makes absolutely no sense. Ken Block created a fun, creative, and exciting film. That's all it is. I don't understand why this would bunch your panties so much. By all means, don't stop talking shit about everything. You're the main reason I keep coming back to this site. I'm a fan.

I know a good amount of people that fix up cars that are poor as shit. I mean it's a hobby. Someone that is into it will put full money into their car, even if it looks and performs like shit. All this is relative. No one is saying you need a Ken Block car with an outfit to match. Some people like drifting cars even if they drive buckets. Its all just the love of the sport or hobbie.

But seriously, I think my mistake is in still seeing DC as a skateboarding/footwear brand when really, they no longer are confined to such a small niche market. I would also freely admit that I am not a part of the target market for this piece, and that I too have a slight disdain for grandiose rich-boy antics such as Gipper described.
