Damn shame.. The good die young..

I met him during an almost tour a few years ago and talked heaps about traveling, skateboarding, weed and music. We kept in touch and he gave me lots of advice on traveling. Crazy shit is he just got married too. Hope his family and friends are holding up well.  I just watched his ill part in SB Chronicles Vol 1.

You guys make me feel so important.  I wish I could have read a well articulated response to what I stated earlier instead of someone just deleting a whole thread that included hundreds of responses from other people before I even said anything.  If you don't want to hear my opinion there's a button somewhere near this text where you can go to never hear from me again.  But to delete a thread because you don't like what one person says, that's about as low as burning books so people don't know the truth.  I'll post what I said earlier and hopefully this thread won't get deleted.  If people don't like what I say I really would like a well articulated response as to why they disagree with me so I can better understand it.  However, I don't feel any sadness in hearing that he died aside from the fact that this is going to bring more publicity to his name than ever before and it is going to be capitalized on from the company he sold his soul to.

Lewis Marnell former Nike team rider dies of diabetes oooohh that sounds super marketable for Nike I mean he still is under contract right? im not going to feel bad for the dude because by riding for Nike he probably stole the livelihoods of a lot of skaters that were supporting the people that supported them. Nike bought him because he gave off this pure, self conscious image of a guy who wouldn't do something bad and that's the exact opposite of what he actually did and will probably be most known for at his death. Lewis Marnell deceased Nike rider. I can't wait for them to release his unseen footage and slap a Nike logo right in front of it. I don't know exactly how he died but if it would have been a long and costly death, I am quite certain Nike would have dumped him in a heartbeat if they couldn't profit from it. And he, Lewis Marnell, supported people like that and helped them destroy their competitors that probably would help someone in a time of need like that. Good riddance.

A lot of what you are saying isn't even coherent though? and you're being overly-assumptious about this? Low as people burning books so they don't know the truth? You don't know the truth yet though, no one does. There are some people who view the slap forum who in all likelihood will have known Lewis personally at some stage and this is a time of mourning for them. In terms of the thread for skaters who didn't, appreciation. If you haven't got something nice to say in this situation then don't say anything at all?

I don't even know why I'm giving you the time of day, bit it's because you're so thick

This is the worst news to wake up to R.I.P, one of Australias best

Litterally only saw him skating a couple of month ago and he was shredding
so that just makes snowmans comments more stupid

But no one will ever be able to skate a long gap like Lewis and make it look so small

I always loved the dude. Snowman: you seem like a spazz. You have no idea how Nike or the rest of his sponsors are going to handle the situation. Putting out footage of him after he died? I can't see how that would be in bad taste. And saying how riding for Nike steals money from innocent souls? That's called hyperbole.

Never met him but the news still makes me incredibly sad

I'm kind of bummed Nike SB hasn't put up anything on their site, dudes been repping the swoosh before prod. I'm sure they will soon though.

I always viewed him as one of the blue collar skate video heroes. Consistently put out quality 3 min parts for his sponsors every year.

I hope people don't take this the wrong way, but to me, this further creates this eery aura around 'Let's Live' that makes the viewer feel privileged to be witnessing these amazingly talented and rad dudes that are no longer with us in probably their happiest youthful years. It's been my personal favorite video ever since it came out.

I once asked Wes Kremer who had his favorite part in Let's Live and he said Lewis

Again, RIP Lewis. As a fan, I appreciate for how you represented yourself as a skateboarder.

Fuck this..  :'( Remember first time i was in Stockholm, and there was this buzz about a kid from Australia who just moved to sweden, who was hooked up by Kareem. Lewis was the first skater together with Ali, who presented skateboarding to me as something really extraordinary, like super skaters, pro?s. And they where just kids. But they where sooo good, and unreachable talented.

Lewis ended up showing me and some friends around the city, and i stayed at his hotel for a few days where he lived until he was getting a flat in Sweden. Dudes was soo short, so cocky, and unbelievable talented. We crossed paths a lot of times over the years, and when i moved to Stockholm we started skating together more often, me and him skating during the days when other people where working. Its been a gift to having seen him grown from this superkid to one of the most humble and talented skaters out there.

Lewis have a lof of friends in Sweden, and wont be forgotten. Miss you pal.

Vila i frid Lewis & Johan.

Its been a gift to having him grown from this superkid to one of the most humble and talented skaters out there.

Lewis have a lof of friends in Sweden, and wont be forgotten. Miss you pal.

Vila i frid Lewis & Johan.

You could tell so early with Lewis that he was going to be a force in the skateboarding community; he just had whatever "it" is. The style and fluidity of his skating always spoke volumes to me, it looked so natural and unforced: it just made you want to go get some. Ever since Chichagof came out I just wanted more. I can remember being so excited to see Lewis finally getting hooked up proper from his sponsors and waited eagerly for literally anything from the man. It could have been just one trick in a montage, but I just remember anything from him would get me so psyched. The man gave a lot of joy to me personally through his skateboarding, as I'm sure it resonated with many others here, and I'm sure he would appreciate all the love and positive support being generated in this tragic time. Although he may be gone, like many of our countless other fallen brothers, his skating will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those who were affected by it. Thank you so much Lewis for the memories and all that you gave to the collective skateboarding whole.

Well, I'm a Type 1 Diabetic since I was 9 years old - and I know there are some other Slap Pals that are diabetics aswell -, and seriously a severe hypoglycemia was the only scenario of diabetes related happening that could explain the death of a young person such as Lewis.

It's really not a complication of the illness but a straight accident - and, worst of all, an accident that take place due to a convergence of circumstances: an hypoglycemia is an abnormally diminished content of glucose in the blood and it could be restored as easily as ingesting anything sugary - in a matter of two minutes you feel the effects of your sugar levels going back to normal, or more exactly, you could feel the effects of being low going away.

This is a common thing in a diabetic life and you learn to easily detect when you're going down on glucose 'cause your body tells you loud and clear. But sometimes and due to a mix of factors - you're also tired, sleepy, had to much of a physical exercise that steadily consume your glucose levels and you're not able to fight it eating more carbs, or your last insulin dose was higher than the planned eating pattern... -, the hypoglycemia could get severe to the point that you'll need more than a simple sugar cube and an orange juice.

An average person maintain glucose levels between 90-120 mg/dl.
An hypoglycemia happens below 72 mg/dl.
A human body may lost consciousness due to an hypoglycemia below 35 mg/dl. but it depends on the person situation.

I've never had lost consciousness due to an hypoglycemia but I've been around the 37 mark in a pair of occasions in my life due to mistaking the symptoms to just being fatigued and lagged eating and, both times, was my wife who recognize my dopey behavior and took care.

That's why Lewis' death it's even a sadder thing 'cause it probably involves a mix of really unfortunate little things that could easily have been fixed pre-unconsciousness or even during the unconscious state with an in-time shot of Glucagon or the intervention of paramedics. But I guess it all was too late.

I'm really feeling for his wife.

Rest In Peace Lewis.

And your argument is that disrespectful kooks aren't part of skateboarding, because I can think of plenty.

It does not really matter who says what but that there is an even grounded  place to say it, whether you agree or not, censoring Snow Man is taking away that voice for any one, you or these (ADMINS) don't agree with ,defeating the purpose of SLAP,,

Who in Jesus fucking shitballs christ is offended by the silencing of the shit snowman said? Let it be known that I, and the other moderators rarely ever delete posts. The only instances I ever delete posts are spam, pirated links, direct sexual references toward a minor, and the post snowman made. Even when somebody does post something offensive like a gangrene-ridden butthole or a racist slur toward a user, I'll give them a temporary ban with a warning rather than flat out deleting the post. The level of tolerability on SLAP is huge. Hell, I didn't even delete the material other posters quoted from snowman.

I'd also like to add that what sets SLAP apart from most other online communities is the strong presence of intelligent conversation, and this is in part due to regulation of what people post. Consider Youtube comments, online gaming voice chat, 4chan, etc. When there's no regulation, any attention starved kid like snowman will overwhelm the conversation with garbage and turn it to shit. Online communities need moderation to minimize that input and keep the real conversation going.

I assure you that SLAP is not in danger of totalitarian regulation. We didn't delete the "Nyjah sex tape" thread when his sponsors asked us to, we didn't delete the "Ben Raemers sister" thread when his sponsors asked us to, we don't monitor PMs for links when Infamous Entertainment asks us to, and so on. Mindlessly blasting a conversation grieving the death of somebody that many people on this forum know personally is crossing the line in the worst way and absolutely within reason of deletion.

This is a sad day for sure. I remember looking in a Swedish skate magazine called funsport from like 1998. And there was this trick tip by lewis doing hardflip, he was so young and there was alot of talk about how good he was. And then when he came up and pulled it of in the volcon video I knew thid guy was no joke. For sure one of my favorites. Loved when I saw an almost clip on transworlds site and the song they used was an Ebba Gr?n song (swedish punkband).

Mindlessly blasting a conversation grieving the death of somebody that many people on this forum know personally is crossing the line in the worst way and absolutely within reason of deletion.

so sad.. I vividly remember seeing his shared part with dollin in chicagof for the first time and being blown away, not knowing who he was.. and his part in that digital video to marvin gaye was the best.. the only part i really remember from that video.. rest in peace lewis

RIP to Lewis. I remember he had a switch flip photo down a pretty big set of stairs in an old TWS article (I think it was a "Time to Shine" Australia article) and I've been a fan ever since. When I think of switch flips, that's the pic I remember. I was also a huge fan of his Chicagof and Cheese and Crackers parts.

I used to skate his second-hand Dunks via. a mutual friend at city park many years ago. My strength and condolences to those close to him.  I know the Melbourne scene is hurting now. Here's hoping someone puts up a memorial piece at Prahran or Fitzroy. Vale Lewis Marnell. RIP.

Saw him in NYC a few years ago skating at Thompkins with a Baker board.  I think there was a kicker that day and he was doing head high kick flips and front flips.  I was like, 'who is this white boy with dreads killin' it?'.  The same dude that had gotten on Almost months later.

Man, he had so much epic skating left in him to show the world.

I had the opportunity to film him one day and I know people exaggerate the positive aspects of peoples character when they pass away, but he truly was one of the nicest people I ever met. He was so thankful that I filmed him even though I was just some random kid who was there because my friend had me along. We talked for a long time even though he had a huge crew of Aussies with him and really was just a great guy. Here are the 2 clips he got that day, which are awesome. RIP Lewis Marnell.

Holy shit...what a sad thing to find on returning to work today. I initially judged him because of his dreadlocks...then his attitude, kindness (from what I could tell) and skating won me over. Yet another lesson in the fact that I tend to be wrong 99% of the time when I judge people on outward appearances.
So sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with his friends, family and wife.

R.I.P Lewis, i was super bummed when i heard about this. Started with Rob Brinks instagram post then went from there.

I got to meet him in Chicago when SB were at wilson, I also had dreads then and was growing them for 2 years, so we got into dread talk and he has his for 5 at that point. He was a really cool guy and maybe ill post the pictures of that day on here. But if anyones from chicago here, he kickflip FS tailslid the bump to ledge on the pyramid and i think it might have been first try. It was amazing to see someone skate that smooth and consistant, hes one of those guys you could just tell he skated "Pro" level just chilling.

Im glad i got to run into him and see how sick a person he is.

I just saw the nollie 360-flip over the picnic table (Almost sequence) again a few days ago, he was truly a professional, always surprisingly good and inspiring.

I'm just a fan of skateboarding. They didnt disrespect his memory but they disrespected the clips he worked for by drawing bats and fireballs all over it. Maybe that's what he wanted, I dont know, but it seemed whack to me.

I remember being blown away by his nbtt nike part, I was super hyped on the song and read-up about Lee Perry. He has been on the player along with loads of other reggae and dub ever since. Even went to see his show a few months back, probably thanks to Lewis using him in that part.

I have a good friend whose brother is type 1 diabetic so I know a little about it. His brother started using heroin about a year ago and he told me he was terrified about him just getting high and forgetting to take care of of his insulin levels. He also thought the fact he was spending all his money on dope would stop him from eating properly which seems to be essential when diabetic. Pretty scary that a relatively healthy person like Lewis can pass away like this!

This really happened?

Somehow I imagined the people at the Element offices stressing out and making calls trying to stop one thing and - at the same time - the people at the enjoi offices laughing their asses off and making calls trying to blow the other thing out of proportion.

RIP LEWIS MARNELL (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXMbEOEc3s4&feature=player_embedded#)

''I briefly met Lewis for the fist time around 1997 when he was in Stockholm, and we filmed a trick for 411. Then we came to Melbourne in 2003 with the Clich? team to film for Bon App?tit, and him and Dustin Dollin took really good care of us, bringing us to their super good spots. Lucas and Lewis clicked together pretty good. There was a bunch of tricks Lucas wanted to do, but Dustin was always "no Lewis already did it on that spot!"'' - French Fred
