Because it was their first album of mainstream significance and people are fucking sheep. Not to say it's not a classic, it definitely is, but I agree with you 100%. "Trapped Under Ice" is so underrated it's disgusting.

I have been told by older heads, that at the time ride the lightning dropped, people accused Metallica of selling out because of fade to black (imagine that). I tend to agree those first 4 records are unfuckwithable but I can't never choose between master and justice (shitty production and all) as what my fave is.
