Title: Big Feet = Big board?
Post by: JoeyStacks on March 02, 2013, 11:15:53 AM
I wear size 12 shoe and I have been skating a 7.75 for a while now and thinking its too small for me.  I am 5-10 tall if that makes any difference should I go 8in or 8 1/2?  I took a break from skating for a while due to work and injury and my tricks are not coming back to me like I think they should... so advice on board to foot size?

no, just skate what feels comfortable... still, I knew that dude who wears size 12 and skates 7.5 boards, also, he does illusion (or ghost) flips and is stuck in the 90s

There definitely is a correlation between board width and shoe size. For a size 12 shoe you would most likely want to skate at least an 8 but there are obviously exceptions to that rule and you very easily could be one of them. But there's no way you'll know until you try out something bigger.

If you have a friend who rides a wider board I'd skate on that for a full session or longer to see how it feels. It might take a little while for you to acclimate to that board size and for you to realize you prefer it.

And if you want to commit to buying a wider board, my advice would not necessarily be to jump to an 8.5 or even 8.25 if you're used to 7.75, but maybe around the 8 to 8.125 range and then gradually step up (or down) how you saw fit.

Yeah I might jump up to an 8 when this board breaks good info here

from my experience i've been more comfortable with the inbetween sizes such as 7.63, 7.88, 8.125 (current size there, has been for the past few boards and i expect to keep it that way) and i wear a size 8.5/9 shoe.  at the end of the day go with what you feel comfortable/confident, and as bust.factor said try to gradually change sizes up.

I'm 6', 185, size 12 shoe. Just getting back into skating. Started back with 7.5 decks. Felt good, but I've changed to 8.0-8.25 decks and it feels much better.

I've got size 13's. Learned to skate on a 7.75 and after about 3 years i made the change to an 8, it was a momentous discovery and made skateboarding a lot easier. Now I ride 8.5 and I'm not gonna change again i don't think

I have size 12UK (13US) feet and 6'3'' When I first started I skated a 7.5 because I knew no different, but let me tell you upping board size is a great feeling, I went slowly up to 8 then 8.25 and now an 8.5 and it's perfect. 8.5 feels stable, comfortable and feels great to do flip tricks on, so I'd reccomend gradually going up in size with every new board you purchase so the sudden jump doesn't throw you off too bad.

You'll also want to get trucks that match the width, any 139 or 149 equivlent will do the job on an 8.5, but no lower than 139.

dude above me has it right. 8.5 are more sturdy of a board when you're over 6 feet and are pushing 200lbs

Skate 8.5

I wear 13s and I could comfortably skate a 9 if I wanted to.

Size 9.5 feet. Skated mainly 8-8.25'' as a teenager.

Nowadays anything under 8.5'' feels too small, and I'm also a little picky about wheelbase.

Feeling most comfortable on a 9'' deck with a 15.5'' WB right now.

As has been said, it's all down to preference. I'm 6'4" 145lbs and wear size 12. I skate 8.25 decks religiously. I personally hate the way it looks when someone has big feet and a tiny board so that's part of why i ride a bigger deck but the biggest reason is it just feels more stable to have more board underneath my feet. Also, I find that it's a bit easier on my arches because more of my foot is on the board.

i have had size 12 feet since i was in 8th grade, i was so embarrassed when the dude at the Vans store measured my feet. it was a little harder to find big boards when i was in high school. i usually skated Toy Machines because they always had something bigger than an 8. i feel so uncomfortable on anything smaller than 8.5.

I'm 6'2 and I ride an 8.38.

When I started out skating six years ago I was rockin that 7.5 or 7.75 (I had no idea about sizes back then) and then one day the older kid who was teaching me how to skate showed me his new board that was a size 8 and I thought it was the biggest thing ever. It was crazy then, and still is crazy today, as to how the slightest measurement tweak can change your skating.

No questions asked, I moved up to an 8 and stuck with that for a long time, and then one day I tried somebody elses board that was a bit bigger and felt more comfortably.  Once I got a job I started buying 8.125's and 8.25's from Plan B and Baker, and once I tried an 8.5 it was over and I thought I found the perfect match.

The problem with big boards is that some companies don't make anything above 8.25 (Plan B) and so I unfortunately had to stop riding their boards.  I tried to go back to an 8.25 but it just couldn't happen, I hated not feeling sturdy so I moved up to an 8.38 and it's honestly the perfect size.  Not too gigantic, but definitely not tiny.

Unfortunately you spend a large amount of money trying to find that soulmate, but once you do, you'll know for sure what to stick with.

6'3" size 12 feet. Im in my mid 30's now but years ago I went from a 8 to 8.5  and got 149 trucks, it made a huge difference.

I now skate a 9" but i only really skate park.

Flip tricks feel great on a big board.

Yes it does my friend. if you have a longer foot then you would want to have a wider board. Most of  the pros have short feet about 10 to size 12 so they usually ride small as boards, when they ride big boards they are really in the good becasue then they are like in the 90's again, the board covers their whole foot.  I wear a size 14 shoe and i ride 8.4

I guess it all depends on your style of skating too.

I'm 6'1, with size 13 feet. I have skated 7.75-7.8ish for 11 years, and jumped up to an 8.125 last year. It felt pretty good. I then tried an 8.38, which felt incredibly stable, but found it really hard to do alot of the flip tricks on. So I'm back down to an 8.125.

God, I remember my Shorty's days of riding 7.5, and I had size 11-12.

8.5 is the best. I'm also a twelve in shoes and wouldn't think of moving down a board size. I've also gotten a few of my friends to move up to that size and they love it too.

Everyone here has said it's a matter of personal preference, which is true; but at the same time I would say try a bigger deck and see how it feels. my feet are a 9 and I rode an 8 for years. One day I found an 8.19 Baker deck that I really liked so I picked it up and I was perfectly comfortable on it...The next deck that I liked was an 8.25 and I thought to myself, "what the hell?", so I grabbed it and I haven't looked back since.

I have a size 12 and mostly ride 8.75 - 9" boards, I rode 8 - 8.5 for years, anything under 8" and I notice I got more heel bruises from my foot hanging off.

I'm 5'8, wear size 10 shoes and ride an 8.4. it's super comfy for flip tricks. I tried an 8 for about a year and it was just too hard to balance on and land flip tricks precisely so I went back to bigger boards.

Well I jumped it up from 7.75 to 8 to 8.1 and I like that size so far.  I tried an 8.5 at the park and it felt like a longboard to me.  I dont think I am gonna make it past 8.25 but you never know.  What sucks is having to buy new trucks when the old ones still have life left in them.
  Thanks for the help

I'm 6' with size 12 shoes.  I'll go anywhere from 8.5-9+, popsicle to non-popsicle shaped decks. I have ACE 44's and as long as I can put them on a board without it being too much of a magic carpet ride, I'll do it.  I got a good deal on ebay for 2 Slave War Pig decks, and those are in the 9.5" range.  Generally, really wide with a 14.5 wheelbase and pretty loose trucks, and I'm happy.

Skated all sizes from 1988 till now, and I think the one thing that makes the most difference to me personally is wheelbase.

If you have short legs a shorter wheelbase board will feel better no matter how wide it is (unless you have like a size 14 foot).
If you're a taller dude and your legs are long, then a longer wheelbase will feel right regardless of width as well.
It's good to play around with all size decks and wheelbases on various things, not just one thing like street or tranny, bowls etc.
It's alot about concave too. I feel a flatter board feels wider (more foot on board feel)...and vice versa.
