Title: TV Worth Watching
Post by: jerrys_kids on March 06, 2013, 09:30:31 AM
Basically I've gotten into finding shows I like and watching all of them. so I wanted suggestion about what shows were good, they can be currently on the air or the show could be over, doesn't matter.
Shows I've been watching a lot lately are Game of Thrones (GREAT SHOW) and The Wire (also fantastic)

Shameless is so gooood.

For funny shows, 'its always sunny in philadelphia' and workaholics are good really good. Eastbound and down is good too, its not pure comedy but its a comedy show.

Another show I really liked was 'How to make it in america', its a little corny sometimes but enjoyable.

House of Cards on netflix

Homeland is the closest thing to The Wire as far as character complexity IMO

Hogan's Heroes, who says a sitcom can't be set at a WWII Nazi P.O.W. camp

Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, Girls, In Treatment

I'm glad you threw in The Wire right off, because if you like that then you'll probably like Homicide: Life on the Streets. Also check out The Corner, both of those are David Simon shows too, though he didn't have much involvement with Homicide until the end of it's run, due to still being on the Baltimore Sun.

So corny they cancelled it after like two seasons

Arrested Development.  You should watch the whole thing a few times though because there are a lot of recurring and subtle jokes you'll miss the first time or two. I usually rewatch the series once a year or so and it's still hilarious.

I also really liked Criminal Minds, but I haven't watched this season.

Seconding those. House of Cards was a real pleasant surprise.

Gotta recommend Deadwood though. Probably the only show that I'd say without a doubt is on The Wire's level.

For any of the David Simon cats out there, should I start watching Treme?

Yes. It's weird seeing him focus on a city other than Baltimore, after two long series set there, but he seems to capture it well. Not that I've ever been to New Orleans.

I haven't seen this since it originally aired I think and the only episode I remember is when that kid had the giant dick blurred out through  out the whole episode and they treated it like a disease, where you could call a number and donate for his cause because he couldn't be a normal kid, like right his bike and shit.  I really wanna see that again.

Tosh.0 has really funny jokes and his delivery is fucking great.
The Burn is pretty good when he has come good comedian guests on the show and they go all out on each other.
Curb Your Enthusiasm for sure
The Office never disappoints.
Comedies mostly but sometimes I'll go on Breaking Bad benders and probably gonna start Sons of Anarchy on netflix.

Ah yes...the Little Donny Foundation.  He has to use a special strap when he goes for a bike ride so it doesn't get caught in the gears.  One of the best episodes was the Thunderball one.

surprised nobody has said House Of Lies, on showtime. It's starring Don Cheadle, Kristin Bell and Ben Schwartz. I think it's pretty bad ass, it has 2 seasons out so far. But this is Slap, so I feel you guys might not like a show about the 1%.

Also agree with Breaking Bad, Curb, Always Sunny, I think The Burn with Jeff Ross is worth checking out too.

Another show I really like is The Newsroom. I'm not huge on politics but I think it's pretty compelling stuff. Jeff Daniels is amazing in the show. Here's a clip of the first 8 minutes of the pilot episode.. I'm sure some of you may have seen this already.. really awesome shit

I've been watching Broadchurch.

Watched an episode of Peaky Blinders, it's not as polished as Boardwalk Empire (which is the standard that I use for period crime dramas) but it's likable enough I guess.

Also got the last 5 episodes of Breaking Bad that I've yet to watch, planning to binge through that sometime.

There's a lot of good serial television being produced these days.

Al Swearengen is one of the funniest characters, this guy's a fucking goldmine of great dialogue.

I've also been collecting episodes of HBO's The Leftovers and The Strain (on FX). Can't follow shows week-by-week. I gotta have entire seasons before I can watch something.

^Dexter is one of my favorite shows ever. the latter seasons are kind of lacking but seasons 1,2 & 4 are gonna be some of the best TV you'll ever see. 3 is solid but its more of a character buildup to an epic season 4. Season 5 was dope to me as well but i guess "the critics" didn't like it and all then from there on its decent, just not nearly as good as before. Too hard to top the earlier seasons really. Just watch the first episode & you'll be hooked though. If anything seasons 1 & 2 are TV masterpieces no matter what so if you don't go through everything, at least see those two.

Did anybody mention Fargo? I didn't expect much from it because of the attachment to the movie, but I honestly liked it more than I did the movie. It's weird in that it couldn't exist without the movie, but it has almost no other attachment to it.
Title: Re: TV Worth Watching

I think it definitely could have existed without the film. I mean, there were a few odd remnants here and there from the film, but that was mostly there for the fans of the movie - you weren't required to know them in order to enjoy to story.

Wonder what new cast/crime they're going to have for the second season? The criminal organizations (and the criminals) in that world are so eccentric and weird. Like that super pedestrian looking office in Nevada that happened to be the hub for a network of hit men for instance (Malvo's employers).

Utopia is well worth a watch

It's made by Channel 4 in the UK and is quite British in style, it's darkly funny though and only 6 episodes in the first season so easy to catch up on.

Season 2 starts of with a fucking amazing origin story of what has happened to start of the events.

Finished the first season of Deadwood recently and watched the first episode of the second season earlier today. I'm inclined to call everyone a cocksucker now - such a wonderful word

Al Swearengen is one of the funniest characters, this guy's a fucking goldmine of great dialogue.

I've also been collecting episodes of HBO's The Leftovers and The Strain (on FX). Can't follow shows week-by-week. I gotta have entire seasons before I can watch something.

But the show I'm most looking forward to is Steven Soderbergh's Cinemax show -

The Knick Season 1: Trailer #1 (Cinemax) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_xvw-_YJSo#)

The Leftovers is awesome. Definitely the best dramatic TV show I've seen.

Did you see last weeks episode? That opening scene was fucking gnarly

I guess I meant it wouldn't have "landed" without the movie. I definitely wouldn't have been as interested in it without that connection. It needed the movie to come about, in a way.

I assume the Fargo name will keep just being in reference to whatever criminal element. They'll all maybe be dispatched from that same office or something? Either way it's an awesome show is what I'm saying here.

The Meltdown with Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani   ; if you like stand-up comedy. Also, it's on after @Midnight (which is also great) and it's uncensored. Cursing is COOL!!!!!!

Here's the origin of the show

backing this show. Check it out if you have HBO and are into dramatic shows that could potentially lead to rewatching the whole series again.

I want to see Fresh off the Boat ... a total Asian stereotype show and it looks hilarious
Big Brother is always amusing
Leftovers started out .. ... .. . . .. intriguing ... they lost me
Twin Peaks is still the best

I watched every episode, and damn it's pretty slow. Lots of waste scenes and little going on, season 2 better be good or else that show is donzo

I'm English so there might be a couple of these that aren't very common with the US guys.

American Horror Story
Archer
Arrested Development
Breaking Bad
Entourage
Fargo
Hannibal
House of Cards
The IT Crowd
I'm Alan Partridge (funniest thing on TV, ever)
Line of Duty
Luther
The Newsroom
Orange is the New Black
Peep Show
Ray Donovan
Sherlock
The Shield
The Sopranos
Suits
Top Boy
The Trip
The Trip to Italy
True Detective
Utopia

That should keep you going for a while.

^Good shout on Peep Show

I binged the fuck out of that series when I had Netflix. Can't get enough of Mark Corrigan and Jeremy and their misadventures. I'm sad that season 9 is going be the last. I kind of want it to go on forever.

I had the first episode of The Knick saved up with the intention piling of them up and binging but I blew my load and watched it. This show is fucking awesome.

It's got Soderbergh's fingerprints all over it and the electronic score is such a cool contrast to the 1900-era setting.

I'm gonna give the Knick a shot, but if anyone here is an NFL fan and doesn't watch Hard Knocks I recommend watching it right now.

workaholics fucking sucks. it's a less funny always sunny with more drug references to appeal to highschool kids that think that is how life after college will be.

Well Goodburger, apples and oranges, and frankly you fucking suck. It's a COMEDY show. Plus Always Sunny is a bunch of douche bags who yell at each other in hysteria in between funny segments. You sound like Tipper Gore after college. Appreciate the analysis Leonard Maltin but no thanks.

So throw out some mention worthy shows or shut the fuck up.

The Knick had one of the strongest debut seasons of any show I've seen

If you guys haven't seen it yet, I recommend you go torrent the entire season now that it's done.

I try to avoid watching TV , but I sometimes download

Gotham , it seems pretty good from the few eps so far . Pretty good actors
The League , Its funny and the main chick is fucking hot , but its abit too unrealistic ,
Kitchen Nightmares UK , Back when Ramsey was more low key and its on the BBC so its not all about money and drama
The Blacklist , Abit too much hollywood but James Spader is a really good actor
True Detective , good acting , good story

I kind of want to recommended its always sunny , it has really funny moments but its alot of screaming and nonsense , and really
unrealistic .

Anybody ells kinda think the Simpsons and family guy have opened up for " real life " TV comedies to push the limits more ? make it more
unrealistic ?

See, now I hate "The Middle," but "Everybody Loves Raymond" is one of my favorite shows. Right up there with Seinfeld and Curb for  me. I had some free month of Amazon Prime and checked out "Transparent" and that is super good. Watch all 10 episodes in one sitting. Too good to stop.
