Title: Welcome wheels
Post by: wisdom teeth on September 03, 2013, 08:47:29 PM
Just saw this on the old insta; I took the courtesy of uploading the image myself for those without the mindless application.

"Orbs 104a, flat spot guaranteed, developed by an alchemist not a chemist. We didn't need to make them brown to work either. Shipping to shops this week."

Little jab there at spitfire I believe.  Anyway I'm really interested to see how these come out.

I saw those. 104A has got me curious. I don't fuck with cores though.

I'll give em a whirl,  if they can possibly slide better than stf's and F4's I will keep buying them, but that is kinda lame to take a jab at spitfire like that. I have met the dude who developed the F4, he is a chemist/engenier or whatever but he skates so put that in your hipster pipe and smoke it

I will stick to Spitfire and Bones, 104a is way to hard IMO.

I will stick to Spitfire and Bones, 104a is way to hard IMO.

The problem is that the scale isn't accurate enough by everyones standards.

Bones STF and SPF are in that range, but are labeled on a b scale.

Cores deter me a bit though. Im with Morty on that, and he sold raincoats with Harry Fleming for 38 years!

Yeah they're probably fast as all hell. Skated some cored 105 59mm roller skate wheels and they were too fast for me. Plastic cores give out after a while and your bearings will fall out though. How big are these?

i have a set of bones stf's and they don't seem any harder or perform the same as a set of picture ppu wheels 101 . the bones stf's actually seem to have gone a bit soft compared to when they were new

From what I was told Bones and other B rated wheels are not urethane, but A composite.
Hence the milky appearance and odd plastic feel.
I got to try some of the welcome wheels, really hard and fast.
Not sure how cored wheels will be received, but it's cool they went high end and got someone legit to make them.

got this as a cruiser today believe it or not. Wanted to try something different. I don't know if its the part that I've never had a cruiser or the deck shape itself but I don't remember having this much fun on a board in a while. If anyones interested the set up is OJ Keyframes, Thunder 149 Lights,Super Reds.

Can't wait for this Welcome, weird shaped boards, "being bad at skating on purpose" trend to end.  My F4's skate like my "first time".

Not sure where you live but some of the best skaters I know ride shaped boards. All the Welcome videos are full of guys ripping at skating, maybe not the type of skating you like but that doesn't mean they are bad at skating. I for one love the boards and love that companies are breaking the mold.

I cant speak for Pic wheels, but i mentioned my comment on instagram today, and the Welcome page responded in affirmation.

Ditto - Polar's doing it too...Pontus even said in some interview how Vallely's old double tail model inspired the P2 shape. Just don't knock the funky shapes until you ride one...a cruiser is a good way to test the waters if you think you might be into it.

If you were to flatspot the wheels Welcome wouldn't do anything anyway.  Bought a deck from them direct, it warped so much the board would teeter tooder.  Contacted them about it, he said tough shit.  He has some delusion that Ps stix can't warp.  I dont keep my board in my trunk or any other neglect issues that would cause it to warp.

They won't get another penny from me.

Welcome taking a shot at DLX is comical.  DLX knows how to treat their customers.

Those look sick - I love the pop of an ollie when the nose/tail are on more of an angle:

The Welcome Nimbus 3000 shape is similar - but I found it was a little too small with how it tapers. Would make a good cruiser (like the guy in this thread posted). I'm on a squid beak now, but that's gona be retired and converted into a cruiser once I find the sloth shape around. The squid doesn't have as much of a tail as I would like; but that's the only negative thing I have to say about Welcome on the whole.

Do you think the Welcome Wheels are going to be REALLY slippery though? I saw people saying the new F4 101's were slippery - and these things are 104A. Is this more of a "tranny" wheel or something?

I'm riding the jackalope nimbus-whatever right now. I bought a sloth waxing moon shape at the same time that I'm waiting to set up. I've enjoyed the shaped boards so far.

I've had trouble with PS Stix stuff warping in the past.

Too bad about your customer service experience with Welcome. You'd hope that with all their talk about backing the 'little' guy they would be more receptive to their customers needs.

Lastly, I agree that taking shots at DLX is phony. I'm not down with any 'us vs. them' mentality.

Definitely agree on the nimbus 3000 shape. It felt a little too small for me. I upgraded to the nimbus 5000 as my normal board and it seriously feels amazing. I've been wanting to try the polar's p1 and p2 shape. Anyone know somewhere on the web to get the p2? I was thinking theories but they're out.

As a wheel upstart, taking a shot at Spitfire is not just bad form, it's just plain dumb. Whether you ride Spitfire wheels or not, their dominance in the wheel category is undeniable. Welcome doesn't need to do that. You don't have to shit on another product to sell your own, let the product get noticed on it's own merit. They come off as insecure kooks with that dumb shit.

No problem. The Jackalope at the front boots is roughly 8.5 and 8.25 at the back bolts. The sloth shape is 8.25 at the front bolts and 8.125 or so at the back truck bolts.

No, I sincerely doubt Spitfire/Deluxe Distribution gives two shits about an instagram caption or considers Welcome starting a wheel or board company a threat in any way. Show respect where it's due. Deluxe has been a solid part of skateboarding for a very long time. No disrespect intended, but the dudes who ride for Welcome haven't been conscious as long as Deluxe/Spitfire has been a part of the skateboard industry.

Welcome shapes are fun. They should leave it at that.

Welcome has taken a huge chunk of the big guys business in the last year. They are all well aware of what they are doing and wondering how it happened. I'm not even suggesting them doing wheels will make a dent in that market, but their boards are everywhere, and selling well.

True. I'm riding the Jackalope right now and have the Sloth shape on deck. I think their boards are rad, but I think the dig at Spitfire is bogus. Welcome is doing something cool and fun, there is no need for negativity.

I am confused as to why it is a dig at Spitfire? They make brown wheels? I am missing something.

All the sample/tester sets were a bit more beige than the ones released.
They're still not quite white, I actually liked the tan ones.

Well, Shawn, bright white urethane to us old fucks is the old natural urethane from back in the day.
Today's bleach white wheels fan would never had survived back then. White wheels shipped fuckin light brown yellow back then, and in months were almost orange, it was inevitable.  :P
So when I look at Formula 4's I don't notice it either.

got this as a cruiser today believe it or not. Wanted to try something different. I don't know if its the part that I've never had a cruiser or the deck shape itself but I don't remember having this much fun on a board in a while. If anyones interested the set up is OJ Keyframes, Thunder 149 Lights,Super Reds.

How do you like the Keyframes? I've been curious about them for awhile.

I had some and they were really good. They have a nice bounce to them.

There fuckin solid forsure give them a try, Im loving them so far. I usually ride bones strictly but finally saw them at a shop there kinda hard to find but the guy behind the counter was telling me some great stuff about them too so had to pick them up.
how slippery are they? 104a sounds really hard

When did wheel hardness choices change from 92/95/97?  It seems so long ago.

When wheels started getting really small. Late 91-early 92ish.
A small 40mm wheel in 95a won't go really fast. They needed to be hard to maintain at least some speed.
Anything under 52mm that's softer than 98a will be pretty slow. Cores help keep the 54mm area soft cruiser wheels rolling though.
The trick to making soft wheels faster is cores.

Why Welcome went with a 104a cored wheel is beyond me. (there's technically no such thing, a Bones SPF is 84b, that'd basically be 104a, but there's no above 100 reading on the A scale, so you use the B scale and estimate 20 points higher to sorta use it on the A scale - mouthful!).
Alot of cores are around that hard anyways at say 84 -86b, so I don't see how adding an actual separate core would help a bearing seat better. Maybe a patent w/ another company that uses the same urethane recipe prevented them from just going with a straight poured in standard mold 1 piece wheel?
Weird, but hey, interesting looking wheels regardless. I bet they are fast as fuck on concrete, but slippery as all hell on masonite.

The swirls look much more subtle in that picture, I'm also curious as to how they compare to the new spits. Can't imagine a better wheel.

Skated park for an hour or so. No flatspots and they actually grip real well. Overall good control. Not sure about f4s, but if you like bones and dont mind the core, give em a shot.

I'm so hungry for ice cream now.
Never had swirls before but I must admit I kinda want to try these out now. Maybe if they made some red candy cane swirled 52s.

Talked with some of the guys at Familia in Minneapolis and they said they will probably never carry Welcome and they were kinda salty on the whole vibe. They're more into Waters and Army and stuff but one thing that kinda blows my mind is they sell Baker and DGK which seem equally kooky as far brands go.

I don't know why everyone is all up in arms about them making their little comment about the brown wheels it was kinda funny and I don't think they meant it as some sort of shot at Spitfire, just poking fun, you know?

just my two cents

My problem with Familia is that the high5 and send help are the same damn company with a new name. I love some of todd bratrauds art, but he reycles too much shit. If your first brand didnt sell, them how will zoomed and cropped rehased graphics sell?

Im glad shops are willing to support welcome and their creative endeavors

haha high 5 was forced to change their name, that's why theyre send help now. and even if send help/high 5 was doing something wack it wouldn't be a direct reflection of familia

I didn't know they were forced to change names. What I mean is that they carry, and to my knowledge distribute the brand. I don't necessarily like how large all Welcome boards are, but the shapes/ graphics are no more wack than send help.

Im also glad that different shops can afford to carry different brands that they want to support and don't necessarily have to, to survive.

Man, you guys are really sensitive about your Spitfires, huh?  Companies disrespect each other all the time, they just usually do it by ripping each other off quietly. And anyway, do you think Spitfire really gives a shit about a little instagram caption?  A little friendly competition never hurt anyone.
[close]

No, I sincerely doubt Spitfire/Deluxe Distribution gives two shits about an instagram caption or considers Welcome starting a wheel or board company a threat in any way. Show respect where it's due. Deluxe has been a solid part of skateboarding for a very long time. No disrespect intended, but the dudes who ride for Welcome haven't been conscious as long as Deluxe/Spitfire has been a part of the skateboard industry.

Welcome shapes are fun. They should leave it at that.
Wow dude, spitfire wheels suck.. Get over it.
