i go to a school thats 81% black kids, and I'm white. I don't really use the N word, even in the shelter of white suburban neighborhoods among youth rocking DGK and jordans. Everyone at school thinks its funny and I'm too uptight about it and it's almost more disrespectful that I wont say it. When it comes up and songs I'll use it but I honestly hate going to the park and a group of kids saying nigga this, nigga that.

I feel you my man. I used to say it in my early years growing up in the "hood". But once we moved away I noticed how stupid it was for me to say that, so I just started saying Ninja instead of the real N word. And to my surprise it has actually caught on.
So just say Ninja and you'll be all good ;)

went to a similar type school as OP, 80 percent black. never was an issue because i wasnt taught racism, so i didnt even know what it was until junior high. kid in junior high wore a "soith will rise again shirt", and someone asked him to turn it inside out. used n word. i watched the entire school almost give this kid a beatdown, and his eye popped out of his head. so, whens the appropriate time to use the n word?

Once in fifth grade I called a black kid a nigger cause for weeks he kept picking on me for being Pakistani and Muslim, saying my dad works at 7-11 etc. Racist jokes/insuls .. I really didn't mean it as a racist term but I felt I was retaliating.. Shit I probably would never use that word again even though he was being really racist to me for NO reason. But the word "nigga" i avoided til i heard some one say "oh that Korean nigga who was here" - then I realized that its more of a replacement foe dude/bro in some cases. Now I've asked some close black friend of mine in the US as to how he felt..and he told me that my skin is dark enough to where he doesn't care. I have another buddy I skate with whose black and he doesn't care who uses it..then i've met another black dude who says ONLY black people can use it among each other... Shit its such a confusing topic.

It's an ignorant word no matter how you spell it. I hate hearing people say it. I grew up with a black step father, my sister is bi-racial and I grew up in the "hood" and currently live in the "hood" and wouldn't for one second think it was okay to say!

like all words it is in the context of how you use it.
while it is one of the least used words i've ever used i have been told by other to say it in their presence. all where black and wanted me to hear it because i wouldn't say it. like it was a treat for them to get it out of me or something. to me, the first connotation is negative. i think that's the same for about 90% of the population. but it all depends on the context.

I remeber I used it once to say hi to a black friend, "whatup nigga" or something like that. people around us thought that's pretty racist, but he "allowed" to use the word. haven't used it since then, but then again I live in germany and it's not relevant. I call my gay friends "faggot" and we have a laugh about it.

just some background:
i grew up in 'The Suburbs' [via Arcade Fire] and went to a 99% white catholic school. we 'smoked a lot of pot' and watched the chappelle show 'all the time'. i think our 'token black friend' got tired of us always using the n-word around him. anyways, i started listening to tons of rap music and i went to journalism school to write about black issues.

I've noticed that you're sort of an undercover biggot since that thread about the chick who posted stories about dudes she'd fucked to the internet, but I'm sure by the standards of a person from Texas you're not that bad (at least you don't vote republican). Regardless, I'm going to give you my idea of why what you are saying is regular.
The word 'nigger' is the product of a system of belief that enslaved Africans and other dark skinned people for centuries, which I am not cool with. I can totally understand you not approaching every interaction in your everyday life based on historical context; its just that with words, all you really have to do is think through this context once and, if you find you have a moral objection to that word's role in history, just choose not to include it in your vocabulary. The power relations that result from the accumulation of cultural biases throughout history are still present in all those daily interactions, in spite of (or even because of) the fact that people are apathetic to them.
And I do think that Hipster Runoff's statement is a bit ridiculous in that it's a generalization. It's probably true though that some racist people enjoy hearing black people use 'the N word' because it legitimizes their own conception of black people as 'niggers'.
