Some pretty insightful stuff
The Ws: Marc Johnson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eL39vpXqnc#)
-
a lot of valid points and he's right but at this point it just sounds like he's complaining. theres a interview every month with him talking about the same shit.
-
hey marc, you sound bitter but opinions are circumstantial and that's fine, you're totally reading this.
welcome to flavor country.
-

I was just thinking this. I feel like marcs does interviews so often now its like you know what hes going to talk about already. It almost seems like he gets lost in his vocabulary sometimes, like hes trying to sound too smart all the time that he ends up going off topic a lot. Idk maybe that's just me.
-
I feel his last comments about skateboarding culture biting off mainstream was a lecture he gave to elijah berle in the van on a tour. While some of the stuff has been re-hashed multiple times, i thought the Jereme Rogers comments were interesting.
-
Wow. Marc putting down the hammer. I've got to say even in the early 90's it still would have been a select few skaters setting the trends in clothing and opinions as well. Average skaters were no more individuals than they were later coping jocks. The thought that is somehow better just comes from it rebelling against the common style of the era for non skaters and the belief that different for the sake of different has value. Look at the endless shit we as a community give skaters now. The only way to have us not shit on you now is to make no fashion statement like marc and dress like most non skaters I know. Tight pant rocker, Dickies w/slicked hair (me), dgk getto boy, mall style skater ( mike mo, torey etc), weird for the sake of weird "Welcome" boys all get called out. What does that say about us besides there is no such thing as a skateboarding community with the same values anymore. Skateboarding is too big now to have a unifying look.
-
i liked marc johnson when he was a drunk living in the woods
-
thank you karl marx, now that i know that society alienates me from my true self I can really go skate!!!!!
just kidding, but really now skateboarding has always taken reference from other tribes (lack of a better word), and thats what makes it great.
Go to your local park and check out how many different types people are there. Sure theres some in a skateboarders uniform, but more often than not there are some characters.
-

He's still the man, I just hope he doesn't "Koston" himself
-
That was kid of a weird interview. It always seems like he's talking about how he's so disappointed in whatever area of skateboarding. Always concentrating on the negative things. Culturally skateboarding has been changing for years now. Most people probably always started skating because it looked cool and fun, and then the ones that felt a need for public acceptation dropped out at some point, while the ones that had a need to feel outside of the mainstream society stuck by. Now those who need to be accepted by the mainstream can be a part of skating more and more, which also shows in the popularity of Nike, Adidas, etc. The current generation feels that it's amazing and an honor that Nike is interested in our activity and skateboarding can be seen as a legit activity, while a few decades ago skaters wouldn't have given a fuck. Things always change and to me that doesn't matter, because I think that the core is the people who skate because it's fun, no because it's mainstream or anti-mainstream.
-
What I got out of that is bluntslide to bs nose bluntslide is sick a fuck. Bring it to a bench someone.
-
Marc Johnson has been trying to sound more intelligent than he is his whole career. You are all acting like this is recent.
-
gotta agree w/ his ending statements and stretch it beyond skating to most modern people. not that everyone was wicked unique before the internet but it's a great homogenizer that allows similar scenes to pop off [bite] around the country instead of what would've been different and unique groups. everyone accuses each other of being a hipster which means what? contrived? appropriating shit half seriously? holden caulfield would agree it's a bunch of phonies.
-
Well....you guys are really loving all this disco shit so whats everybody's take on that ?
-
ive just worn normal pants and a tshirt my whole life

well I'm gonna stay rockin the sorry arto kit. white t shirt & dark jeans that fit me. I guess I'm devoid of humanity just like those dads wearing red skinny pants driving their honda civics home from their graphic design jobs

all im thinking about are overalls
Why not just go all the way and be the first guy to sport the look of the future. The star trek-esk unitard. If we want to dress like absolutely no other group again I think it's the only option. Marc's message was " it was awesome how we dressed so stupid no one else was doing it yet" right?
-
a little skate clip would have been tighter...
-
was widdit til he started moping about trends in skateboarding... dude needs to get over it. he sounds like that dude at a party that just starts talking shit about everything because he's upset that everyone else is having more fun/is more drunk than he is and that the girl he tried to hit on wasn't feelin him.
sorry there's some new dope contributions that have been brought to skateboarding by newer pros/ams from various parts of the world that other people also like to partake in ?\_(ツ)_/?? if anything he should be stoked about how diverse skate culture is getting, rather than bitching about everyone being so different.
-
Inside the skateboarders studio.
It's good that he's not afraid to say what he wants but he needs to get a bit more thinky and a bit less talky.
-
When he mentioned rap star lifestyle biters I immediately thought of Derrick Wilson and Keelan Dadd. Not mad at them tho because they're just young and having fun.

At least he hasn't proclaimed himself an artist/poet/writer as of yet....afterwhich the Scott Bourne "I'm better than where I come from" transformation would be complete. PS-I like them both but as a NC native I had to say that ;D

Kinda bummed that MJ didn't over analyze the "hip custodian" or "urban camper" look that's dominated skateboarding for the past couple years.

well i agree with him 100%.
people complain about mainstream companies wanting a piece of skateboarding, it's the other way around.

Marc your incredibly skilled on a skateboard and im a long time fan of your work, but why are you so caught up with fashion, it changes, its lame. Oscar wilde summed it up a long time ago with "Fashion is something so ugly we have to change it every six months!"
I take your points but its not very interesting. Unlike your skateboarding which is great.
More importantly why the fuck are you wearing a beanie whilst sitting in front of a log fire, most likely in California

Wow, there are a lot of re-edits these days but that is the most random yet pleasing I have maybe ever seen. I also thought it was funny how there was no Andy Mac in there, because that is just the way it is.

wearing a hat is the modern version of the hairpiece. i am looking forward to bringing the toupee back whenever i come across one and when it becomes a trend everyone will credit rob welsh even though i did it first.
-
i think it's rad that marc has a brain, likes to use it, and is unashamed of his opinions. i always suspected that his goofs and hijinx were just him mocking others, and his recent philosophising (or shit talk, as some might take it) seems to confirm that. i do think he should (if he doesn't already) embrace the openness of skating too, though. the early 90's may have been unique style-wise, but there were a lot of illegal tricks. we like to paint the bpsw era with a rose hue, but i'll take today's freedom of doing anything on you want on a skateboard over the vibing of '92 any day.

Marc Johbson himself said his Fully Flared ender was an ode to Daewon. The front board 270 nose blunt was an ode to Danny Way. Danny Way does it on a ledge in Questionsble and pops out in the middle of the ledge, in like 1991 at that. Insane!

My grandfather past away last year and, to this day, one of my fondest memories of my time with him was listening to him rant and rave about the ails of the world. Don't get me wrong, when he'd tell me things like he thinks all the homosexuals of the world should be relegated to an island and/or be shot against a wall, I'd argue and cringe at how ignorant his perspective was. His views, in my mind, were basically fucked. That being said, it was interesting and important to have someone so vocal from a different place and time.
Skateboarding has crusty, ignorant grandpas now! Let them talk about whatever the fuck they want. You aren't going to agree with them or be able to change their minds, so just smile and nod while they're still kickin' it.

I just really, really, really don't care about other dude's clothing. And I'm not sure why others actively do.

anytime MJ opens his mouth in the past few years there's a ready chorus of "he thinks he's smarter than he is"- the first time Watson made that observation it was at least somewhat original (though still petty and false imo), but now it's just predictable and reactionary. I prefer Marc's fictional rants about being abducted as a child, but hopefully I'll never be jaded enough to fault someone for that there "smart talk"

he prolly is smarter than most of us. i'd put him as above average and people on here run the gamut. i liked his old weirdo talk better too but a 40 yr old telling tall tales would prolly be annoying too. speaking of, did anyone figure out sweet lou's age? he's looked 27-30 his whole career.

Marc Johnson should shut up and skate. Nothing he said was insightful or revelatory. Others have said what he said more eloquently.

The stuff he said about filming for Fully Flared was fascinating - it's interesting to get a glimpse into the making of one of the most heavy skate parts ever. Damn, I can't even imagine pushing myself that hard for a video part. The last five or so minutes of that video were painful though. Yeah we get it, fashion trends are a thing.

Weird how he sees the first few generations of skateboarders completely biting surfing or punk as acceptable, but thinks it's stupid how more recent generations did exactly the same thing just with different sources.

Yeah. This.
I like everything he said. But, I don't know how accurate what he said about skaters in the early 90s is? Then again, I wasn't around to witness it. I don't have any special education related to cultural studies or whatever, but I think all cultures borrow and re-purpose stuff all the time. Skateboarders aren't special in that way. That's something that creative humans do.
Come to think of it, it's kinda weird how we always think we're better than the rest of society for being into stuff before other people catch on. That's pretty wack mentality. Why should this matter?

Go ahead and tripod a camera on yourself and see if you can coherent and iron clad of an argument you can make on the fly that also doesn't take hours to get just right and get your full point across...shits tough.

education is where you find it,

Marc seems to me like the kind of guy that doesn't mind picking up a book or two on his own time and stays open minded to a lot of differing concepts.

I'm sure he was already thinking about all these things long before this interview was even conceived, and it still seemed all over the place. My point was that tertiary education teaches you to present your ideas and arguments in an organised fashion that won't leave people scratching their heads. And I suggested it precisely because I think he has more to say than most pros. I'm not knocking him. Bottom line, he would have made more sense had he gone to college. Besides, it was just an observation.

Now that's just silly. You still need a degree for most intellectually demanding jobs, just like you did 25/50/100 years ago. Nobody's going to hire a self taught engineer, teacher or whatever. Which doesn't mean you have to get a degree.

Education is SUPER important, I agree
but the system of "schooling" with which we have it set up in seems to me to be an increasingly dated one.
-
Sure, you can teach yourself stuff and gain knowledge and it's great if anyone decides to do that. It's obviously better than shitting on learning or going to college because you think you have to and hating it.
Having said that, I think that college offers a better environment for learning (for most people).

lol i think you're looking too far into my words. of course one needs to expose oneself to all sorts of ideas and opinions if one wants to open their mind. but we are talking about the skateboard world here. hardly the first place to go if one wants to stimulate their brain.
anyway, since you threw in politics, do YOU watch fox news? if not, then by your logic you would be close-minded. or do you actually watch fox and then go rant about it? what does that achieve?
i guess the point i'm trying to make is that it's quite a leap to say that because someone avoids something that they find disagreeable that it doesn't make them close-minded. UNLESS they have never honestly opened their mind to the contrary opinions first (and continue to occasionally open up to them again in the future).
-
I wouldn't have brought up FOX news if I didnt watch it occasionally ^
and I choose not to rant about it because there's enough people on both sides of that argument already.
where as the "world of skateboarding" is actually a much MUCH smaller subject as you pointed out, but one that I care deeply for (even though I'm caring less and less as the years go by about the industry).
So I actually bother to "rant" here and there about it.
-

3.) saying how everyone is copying everyone and no one is original yet you blatantly stole half of the tricks you filmed in fully flared and are somehow passing them off as your own by saying you were paying respect or it was a tribute to the skaters who did them first is exactly what everyone who copies someones style is doing no better no worse.. get a grip and just shut up and skate

I was curious about Marc's company "The Back Forty" so I checked out their website and turns out they have a fake FORUM there.
I think they are poking fun at SLAP, because the last post in their fake forum is by TRACER

I just really, really, really don't care about other dude's clothing. And I'm not sure why others actively do.
Well.. When you watch someone skateboarding, which is something most skateboarders do a lot, you're looking at how they look when they're on their skateboard, and what they are wearing can affect this?
I can't think of a single example where somebody's clothing has affected how I view their skating. I'm not that shallow.
I find this hard to believe... Did someone tell you your gear was wack as a child?
I got tons of shit from people when I started wearing tight pants in like 2006. Then two years later half the kids that made fun of me starting wearing them. It's okay to not like certain clothing, but actually caring beyond that is just pointless.

anytime MJ opens his mouth in the past few years there's a ready chorus of "he thinks he's smarter than he is"- the first time Watson made that observation it was at least somewhat original (though still petty and false imo), but now it's just predictable and reactionary.
He's about the same age as me, in other words he's not that fucking old. But old enough to not use the word Prolly. Ok we are prolly really old in skateboarding. Regardless bitching about skateboarding now is stupid because its never been better.

What a stupid old bastard. While I was learning about oppressed people's literature and finger fucking he was gaining some kind of life experience. Fuck him!

Haha, weak attempt at dissing one of the most successful pros of all time. Guess what all that typing got you? Nothing. Guess what Marc Johnson's skating got him? Everything.

I get what Marc Johnson is saying in these interviews. A lot about the current state of the skateboard industry is annoying to him. He has earned the right to say whatever the hell he wants.
But I also enjoy that he's annoying so many people here. If he is annoying you it's likely he is talking specifically about you and that makes you uncomfortable. That makes me an even bigger MJ fan. I was reading some threads here on Slap from about 6 months ago when MJ was everyone's idol and hero, and Ty Evans was an evil force for holding secret MJ footage hostage. People were falling all over themselves barfing out superlatives in expression of their love and gratitude for Marc Johnson. He was King.
Fast forward 6 months to now and a lot of those same people are telling him to shut up. Fickle and disposable this audience...and ironically, that's everything MJ just nailed about skateboarders. So it's really no wonder he is annoying some of you.

Whether I agree or not it's always interesting when someone controversial puts themselves out there and ruffles everyone's feathers.
I'd say he earned the right.

going against the grain is the new mainstream, duh.
btw, I'm calling it right now, within the next 2 years, people will skate in coveralls. mark my words

I love the fuck out of MJ & he drops a lot of wisdom in this interview. I hope he continues this interview roll he's on cause I dig where his head's at these days. Getting sober did that dude a world of good.
Having said that (& knowing I'll likely always be down with any project Marc's involved in), it is interesting to me how pros suddenly get very concerned about the integrity of "Skateboarding" or "skate culture" once they get to the "start your own company" stage of things. They're trying to get a piece of the culture right at the point that it's beginning to pass them by - tricky stuff.

It wasnt an attempt to diss him and the three minutes it took me to type that got me nothing except to express my point of view on the subject ..which is the whole point of a forum to begin with you fucking moron
