Team Handsome Advocate here:

Well, I personally wash my jeans. To avoid shrinkage, wash them in cold. To avoid washing them at all, put them in the freezer. My jeans are worn for skating and any other events, as I like them worn in. Levis 511's, size 32x29 length is perfect, as you don't have to cuff, which honestly, I prefer not having to do, as while I do like it, it can viewed as a gimmick. And yes, I always wear denim to skate in. I used to be a chino guy, but became sick of how the material felt and looked. Jeans are very classic and polished looking, from my point of view.

Jeans all the way. I have 3 pairs I wear on a regular but I wash them only in the most dire of situations. I wear baggy jeans, the new? Levi 285s so I'm not too worried about shrinkage

If you buy nice jeans, never wash them....if you do, hand wash in cold water, roll to dry, let them hang.

Skate jeans, I wash the same way. Never use the dryer or hot water, that's how you ruin the shape/feel.

For the last ten years or so I avoid washing my jeans as much as possible, I'll usually give in when I spill something on them or they become exceptionally nasty. The freezer trick works really well in-between wears. When I need to wash I use cold water and hang to dry. I've been wearing the Levis Skateboarding 511 rigid indigo since they came out and they've held up amazingly.

The only jeans I ever liked skating in were Blind jeans in the 90s.  They were baggy and super thin which unfortunately made them blow out fast.

I can't skate in dickies, they lock the heat in too much.  I bought a few pairs of 100% cotton dress type pants in black and skate those unless it's shorts weather

I own like one pair of jeans but never ever wear em. I have a couple pairs of dickies that I wear all the time though, and I wash em maybe once every 2-3 weeks. Washing em wears em out faster and the more you do the more fucked up the fit gets, so I try not to wash em that often, but man after a few weeks they start getting too gnarly and musty not to wash.

Idk how my roommates will feel about me putting jeans in the freezer though.

I've had lots of jeans in my life and I wash them in cold and hang dry them....I can't say I've run into a pair that have worn out due to washing... Also regarding the environmentally friendly aspect......it discounts the fact that I'm already doing laundry....

This same principle applies to all clothing no?

This is all just stemming from the raw denim craze of what....ten years ago where a bunch of Asians were just trying to keep their jeans crispy....

Yeah what the fuck? My whole family washes their jeans, and I think all my friends do too. All my ex's too, I think. Never heard about not doing it except as a trend thing. I'd think a girl was gross if she told me she never washed her  pants.

But yeah, I do only wash them when they look grimy, to avoid wearing them out. But just set the machine for cold water and light wash, and then do air dry, and it's fine.

Seriously though, normal denim should be washed pretty regularly unless you want to smell like a homeless person.

Same here--only thing I've seemed to notice is that after a while they seem a bit "looser." If I sweat through jeans while skating I definitely want them washed.

Washing denim in cold prevents fading, or at least prevents it from happening so quickly. I personally like my black 511's to have a worn faded look.

I can use a pair of jeans 3/4 times before washing them again, but with skating they get too dirty to use again, so usually they go straigth to the washing machine after the session. I do think they fit better after using 1 time at least, but with 4 uses they start to feel dirty, at least to me. I dont how you can use them for so long and dont feel, you know, dirty. But i dont skate in 100% cotton jeans, needs to have some spandex to give the flex! Haha

I own a pair a Edwin's I bought two and a half years ago that I've never washed. Never skated in em though. I run two pairs of carhartt pants to skate in and they get washed once a week sometimes more. I'm really picky with pants, trying to track down some that tick all my boxes but no luck so far

I skate in selvedge jeans all the time, but i only rock looser cuts cause those fabrics got 0 stretch. I wash mine regularly when they start to get dirty. All that "don't wash your jeans" bullshit is not true, washing is good since it makes your jeans hold up longer by tightening up the stitching and the fabric. The more often you wash your jeans, the lighter they'll become and the least "contrasty" the fades get, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's all personal preference. Bottom line is, wash your jeans.

I've gone like half a year without washing jeans, and I've skated in them too. If they get sweaty, I hang them up to air out in the sun. Never had an issue before.

I skate in jeans and I just wash them whenever they feel dirty or smelly. They're jeans, so it takes a while for that. I let them air out after wearing them, though.

Cotton (aka the main ingredient of denim) should be washed. Cotton has absolutely NO properties that make them anti bacterial or microbial.
Do you wash your cotton tees? Then wash your fucking cotton jeans!

Just wash them cold (with detergent that works at low temps) and hang dry if you're scare of them fading...

When it's too hot I wear shorts, but I got these thicker mesh pants for running in the fall. American made and pretty sturdy for mesh, would be a lot cooler to skate in than jeans, but I could see a bad slam possibly tearing them up.

People wash their shit too much these days but they should be washed.

I used to do the no washing thing and what happens is that all the sweat builds up in the crotch and it blows out. When you wash, wash them inside out on cold (you should always wash on cold; it cleans just as well, costs less, is better for the environment, and better for your clothes) and hang dry jeans.
I also got a weird cyst on my inner leg twice when doing that which I think is because what essal said, lots of microbes accumulating.

Also pro-tip, shaving your pubic hair makes you more likely to get STD's as it basically causes a bunch of tiny little cuts.

I personally hate the way jeans look and feel. I've been wearing Dickies Original 874's for years and I wash them after nearly every wear. If I didn't sweat or get dirty I'll sometimes go anywhere from 2-4 days until I wash them but that's the longest I'll go.

Cold water wash, dry on extra low heat. Never shrink, color never fades. Jeans are 100% cotton which is why they shrink so easily. Dickies are mostly polyester and only a small amount of cotton. They're a bit stiff at first but after a few laundry cycles they are perfect, and way more durable than jeans.

Polyester smells, cotton does too but not nearly as bad. Denim is perfect for summer as it breathes, polyester for winter, but don't get carried away. Jeans look ok and feel tough, much more so than dickies.

So that's the appeal of those Dickie pants? I'm fortunate not to know what true Canadian cold feels like, but I can imagine that wearing jeans in the winter gives you a Ned Flanders vibe. Feels like wearing nothing at all. The wind just cuts right through it!

There's durable jeans out there for sure, but they come at a high price. Levi's are overrated and the quality has gone downhill. There's a former Dogtown team member that makes some badass custom jeans in Cali but he doesn't even list prices so I'm sure they're expensive.

Dickies have been worn in the work industry for decades because they hold up extremely well. There's an industrial cotton line that they have which is pretty much 100% guaranteed not to rip or pill. As far as smell, it boils down to body chemistry. Some people can smell shortly after a shower and need to wash their clothes constantly, others (like me) eat healthy and drink plenty of water and don't stink easily. So for me, it's dickies shorts all summer long and dickies pants in the winter. Never have to buy new clothes because they hold up forever. I can wash them after each time I wear them if I want and they get better and better. Try that with jeans, it's the opposite.
