Title: Advice on Cupsole
Post by: Elderly Gentleman on April 11, 2016, 11:10:38 AM
I want to get some opinions.  I'm looking for a cupsole shoe.  I don't want to get into a debate of which is better vulc or cupsole.  I'm 40.  I have plantar fasciitis.  I'm not doing tre flips, and if I land a kick/heel flip, it's on the 5th try or more.  I want a shoe with really good support and some extra protection.  I skate transition mostly.  I'm tired of sore heels and toes when I fall and bang a foot against the transition or flat bottom. Also with thin, flat vulc shoes, my arches start screaming after just a few minutes of skating.  The Etnies Marana shoes look good and I'm kind of digging the New balance Allston, Logan S, and Stratford.   I'm just wondering if any of you have tried them or could recommend another style or brand.  I know Nike makes a few, but they're awful proud of em it seems, and I'm kind of ticked at how they act like they've always been about skaters and skating when they completely ignored us and would have nothing to do with skating back in the 80's and 90's.  Sure pros wore Nike back then, but Nike sure as hell wasn't promoting that fact.

The Westgate G6s (with the runner toe) were some of the most solid and supportive cupsoles I have ever skated.

I have the same issue and the etnies maranas are great

Mine heals up over the winter and generally comes back in the summer.

Yours sounds worse than mine.

It feels like walking on broken glass after sleeping or sitting but once my feet get worked in im good to go.

Yep.

Had good luck with DC Matt Millers too. But the Westgates were by far the best, super durable as well.

Never Nike.
I started a post asking something similar recently and the best I've found are the adidas suciu. I'm not sure how they will be if you skate a lot of transition but they are amazing on your heels. I have two fucked ankles due to heel impact Injuries and they are the best I've found. they use this midsole which is basically a massive rubber heel that slims down so you still have board feel. They allow me to skate all day but also throw them on and still walk around all day without pain. I seriously cannot say enough how amazing I think they are. You can see photos online about the midsole and it's about a inch thick, but you don't lose any control.
If adidas aren't your thing I'd say the westagates with the runners toe. They take a few to get use to but they are great aswell.
I am waiting on a pair of the cons metric cls to come in the mail and I can tell you how they feel if you're interested.
But again check out the suciu, it feels like you're walking on clouds.

i really like all the emerica g 6 cupsoles, especially the herman g 6 cupsoles. DC have been a great deal for me lately. if you can find some mike mo pro models you can get those. they treated my knees really well after 6 months of skating emerica laceds only.

the revived dc lynx prestige is what i skate right now. thinner cupsole but still stable shoes!

Missing out on SB Dunks. Dunk low's, to be exact.

One of the best all-time skate shoe, in my opinion. Shoe has comfort, durability, grip, etc...

My dad is real big into tennis/squash and he has his own little business.

I try out some shoes for him and they honestly, Prince makes amazing shoes.

Ive only had about 5 pairs that were skateable but they ones that are blow skateshoes right outta the water.

Only a few look decent too though and the rest are fuckin atrocious in terms of looks.

Maybe try a pair

Or message me maybe I could send ya a pair to try out. If ya dont like em for skating at least its a good athletic shoe to play around in

Yes.  Skated this shoe exclusively for about 2 years, soooo good.  They seem to release 90% of these in the vulc model now though which is absolutely regular.  Now i skate the og puig's and am almost out of those, think those are cup too.  A real travesty how neither of these shoes are easy to purchase atm.

They are, but I'm old and have back/knee pain usually and they have been working great for me.  That insole honestly makes them feel better than the cups I have around the house, no joke.  I do support the emerica cupsole shoes but you will have to go with a better insole, the stock ones are garbage.  You could easily find a Busenitz ADV on sale too and those are pretty great in their own right

Title: Re: Advice on Cupsole

exactly.  the suciu is built around the adiprene insole... if you put in a smaller insole, you should probably size it down by at least a full size.
Title: Re: Advice on Cupsole
Post by: coneklr on April 12, 2016, 10:55:32 AM
Unless you are spending $$$ on custom insoles, I can't see any of the aftermarket skate brand insoles being better than that adiprene insole in the Suciu/Superstar.  And I can't speak to the Suciu but I went down half size in the Superstar and it's a perfect fit.

I bought a paid of FP insoles (i forget which exactly pretty sure game changer) and threw them in a pair of crockets, definitely noticed a difference, from the Vans Pro insole. But the second i got the Sucius i tossed them to the side. As much as people seem to love FP I didn't notice it being that great. Sure id use them if i bought some basic cons or vans again, but i don't see that happening any time soon.

I still rock my footprints in my KA3s (not for skating) as they are a bit loose all around but they certainly were not worth the cost (and I got them cheap direct).

Just got in my pair of the Cons Metric if anyone is interested in the few words i have to say about them. Feel really good outa the box they are just have a lot more space in the toes then i had expected. Don't feel as good as the suciu but offer some pretty solid board feel! Also had the same issue with them being way to roomy in my normal size. After calling Cons and trying to return them for a half size down (didn't work as they were out of stock so just going with a refund) I was told:

A) them being listed as 'true to size' on the website was a misprint and they run a half size large according to the listing he had - should have expected this with all Cons but kind of figured a padded cupsole wouldn't be as large as the thinner chucks; boy was i wrong.

B) the metrics are being discontinued

Shit really? Where did you hear that?
I don't hate them or anything, just the whole CLS got me excited cause it might push other companies to make shoes with a bit more protective tech. Seeing Cons go after it is pretty cool (even tho they are Nike) I just hope more companies try and focus on heel protection.

Get a cupsole with a separate midsole and removable insole, then be prepared to swap with your own insoles.

From the incredibly helpful customer service rep I spoke to who also confirmed this with their supervisor (he also mentioned the supervisor was pretty angry that 'true to size' thing was a misprint on the site)

There is a possibility he was talking about the current colorways being discontinued but he did specifically say "the metric model will no longer be made... which is unfortunate as they look really cool"

I usually wear a 10 and could not for the life of me commit to either the 10 or 9.5 in the metric, and they do have lots of room in the toe box, they have that eyelet row setup where you can't really lace them tight without buckling the front of the show at the first eyelet. Bummed, I really liked the look of them and wanted a cupsole.

DC/Nike 10s are perfect (ugh)
Adidas/Vans/emerica 10s feel too big, 9.5s too small

Yeah i had that issue too. Im normally a 10.5 and these felt a bit big in the toes. It really is just a wide toe box/front toes. Im still skating them and everything and they honestly feel great. As much as i felt bummed out when i first got them, every session i wear them they feel better. For such a small shoe they have a good amount of support.

Feel really good outa the box they are just have a lot more space in the toes then i had expected. Don't feel as good as the suciu but offer some pretty solid board feel! All in all not as hyped as i had expected.

I don't believe this is entirely accurate. Just recently Cons instagram account posted a photo of the Metrics in mono/black colorway, and just today in a grey/white pair worn by Mike Anderson. I think they are just releasing new colors.

Actually asked a cons insider about this and they said the metrics are going to be improved upon. I think that the advertising blast cons put out may have been the set up for some big releases in the future.

Sounds exciting! I have not skated mine yet, but I did wear them around doing errands and they were super cozy. Picked up two pairs in black cherry at the discounted price.
