Title: New skate tool design
Post by: ChuckRamone on June 29, 2016, 11:32:17 AM
What do you guys think of this idea? Would you back it? I'm not affiliated with these people.

But it does seem like a pretty good idea.

The only advantage seems to be that I can loosen four screws at once instead of one, and it is larger than pretty much any other tool I can think of.

No, I think I'm good.

$120k to design something that will save me maybe 30 seconds seems asinine.

I go with no.  Putting a skateboard together isn't difficult and doesn't take much time.  Maybe for a super high volume shop, but those guys are already quick.

It's a design for the sake of designing something. It takes 10 minutes max to put trucks on a board and that's if you're taking your sweet time.

For the people saying its stupid, I bet you never use a power drill and rather use a screwdriver, because why in the hell would I want to not waste my time into something that's so beautiful like tighting a screw.

You should only rotate the nuts when mounting trucks and never rotate the bolts.

I hear you.  Maybe it's just being sentimental, but when you've been skating awhile, there is something nice about sitting on your porch and putting a board together.  All the best to these guys.  If people like the product, it'll do well.

I use whatever is closest. Usually happens to be a screwdriver.

I see no point in raising six figures to pay for prototyping and machining to make an ugly, bulky tool that saves a person maybe 20-30 seconds of time. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

First thing I thought. Griptape swirl around every bolt.

That's a good counter argument. I do hate when that happens, didnt thought of that.
But, think if you are a pro, filming in some stairset... a Tool like this would be perfect to change decks, like F1 tools made for skateboarding! Ahah Chris Joslin would love this tool I'm sure.
The bulkyness would make it kinda hard to take everywere but its cool to have in the car if you have one.

I hate "griptape swirl". I see a lot of people set up boards and don't give a shit about that though. It surprises me overtime. Never doubted there other people out there like me that's just as particular about that. Never heard that term. Glad I have a term for it now. Haha

Man, I wish I was as cool as you. I bet you smoke Marlmoro Red's.

Lol, yeah but those silver tools are nearly $20. Unit tool is $7-$10 and it's always been reliable. This new skate tool thing reminds me of the shit that has "as seen on TV" stamped on the packaging. Shit that people really don't need but they think they do.

This would only practical for people who regularly break multiple decks in a session or shops that don't have drills, which is like the smallest market ever. Kids love this type of gimmicky shit though, and the price is about right for a high end skate tool like the Silver or Indy ones. Bet it would do OK at zumiez or wherever kids buy skate tools.

i got a silver tool for sale and bought it mostly for that grip tape file. its really awesome but the shit part is that it gets bald after 4-5 setups. the best tool is the pig one with the part to re-thread stripped accels

No way in the world would I use that.
I still use a Gullwing 6 pack tool. I don't prefer it, I just have it. But I do like to feel each individual bolt sink into the wood. And like someone above said, sitting on a porch or bench putting a board together is just a good thing!
