This was my first proper skate shoe. From a small town with no skateshop, I think I started OK -1992:

The proceeding years were ugly.
What you got? Don't forget the year for context.

These beautiful things, I was like 14, so 2002-ish?

I had Airwalks and stuff before this, but this was the first "real" skate shoe I had. I was stoked.
Mine was grey instead of blue though.
Not long after I got these, wish I would have held on to them.

*EDIT* Not to dismiss Airwalk's legitimacy as "real skate shoes" but at this point they had already been reduced to a Payless brand more or less.

little did you know you would never have to buy a different shoe ever again.
-
Plain black old skools or rowley xlts. I can't remember which came first for me.
After that it was a duffs wave for a while

I only got these because the older dudes at the park would wear them.
-
Black and white airwalk ones. I had airwalk gto's after that.
-
Got them around 2005 or maybe 2006 not sure anymore.
Just found the picture i took of them. Must be 28th of August 2006, that's what the data from the pic says.

Me too but also in the green/tan that Markovich had in the Color video ... had to have them haha

Had many skate shoes when I was younger, but these were the first I skated hard. Like 2007-ish. I'd skate them again if possible.

Almost certainly picked due to having swords on them:
haha! My mate had these (probably his first too?) chucked them on ice for a minute and then cut them down to mids/ silver duct-taped them when he got his first pair of blind jeans ;D
Great memories!
Mine were these:
(http://i370.photobucket.com/albums/oo144/fotns1/speckle.jpg) (http://s370.photobucket.com/user/fotns1/media/speckle.jpg.html)
although I'm pretty sure I had a pair in the red/black speckle colourway too (and not sure which ones I owned first). This was 88/89-ish after which time we were all just rocking bulky (white) adidas/ reebok/ cons high tops because they probably skated the best/ were the most durable. I remember my mum buying me chucks and getting so angry because I tore through them in one afternoon. Did anyone else ever to the reverse "ollie bolts"?
I think the next pair of actual skate shoes I rocked after that were some chukka-inspired airwalk vics . No actually it wasn't the vics, it was these (in this exact colourway):

Navy and white, 2001. I guess DC is still making a couple colors of these too.

edit:
I think I had these before I started skating, maybe 1999?:

First shoes bought specifically for skating were purple Chuck Taylors but first shoes that called "skate shoes" were these Airwalks but colored black and red with bats or pterodactyls where the knives are here.
Almost certainly picked due to having swords on them:

I bought a pair of those Vision high tops (yellow) on amazon for like 20 bucks. They skated well and fit great, but the sole came unglued fast. I wish they made them in a better quality (I don't think the amazon ones are the OG ones), cause I like them way better than chucks or skate-hi's.

He was a fictitious pro played by Airwalk marketing guy, Sin Egelja (R.I.P.). I think the joke was that skateboarding was becoming so commercialized that they may as well have signature shoes.

Bastian Salabanzi Vans. These are the exact color.
Bought them at a Vans store in Orlando Florida while on vacation. I was unbelievably stoked on them. I had to have been like 12 or 13.

Good to see I wasn't the only one who started out with DCs in the early 2000s. This was DC's peak, right? After the DC video I only remember seeing and wanting the Lynx because of Wenning in the mid 2000s, but by then I was all about Es Kostons and Emerica Reynolds.

DC Spectres in 2002. Got them on sale with no shoe box for under $50 at my local skate shop that closed a couple of years later :'(
I wanted DCs because my friends and other skaters had all these models and Mantecas:

1992 - The previous year I destroyed all my regular shoes. I found these in a Rollerskating shop in a city near my hometown. There were almost no skateboarding shops in Spain back then and Vans were nearly impossible to find. I bought two pairs and destroyed them as well but these ones I kept using out of sheer necessity/pride.

the first "skate" shoes i got mightve been these or Rowley XL's:

i`m 95 percent sure it were these duffs, in that colorway, hard to tell on the photo, and didnt really find a better one. mostly remember it due to the shoebox.

I'm not quite sure but the first I can remember were some really fat Vans with the puffiest tongue I've ever come across.
They looked pretty much like these shitty DC's but I'm prety sure they had a vulc sole.
I also remember having some Vans that were bascially a fattened up Era which were really good. I think they might have been some Rowley model but I can't remember.

I not sure if I bought those first or some Vans La Cripta Dos (Those were shieeet). Bought them at the mall, Year 2008 I think.
They werent regular canvas, more of some kind of nylon. Didnt skated that much in them, but were comfy.
I think the first real skateshoe I had and skated till they're dust was those Prod 2's. They were indestructible and next level comfy. Lasted over 1 year! I even gave them after to a skater friend and they lasted half a year more.

Similarly to my first board being a result of being overwhelmed in my virst real skate shop visit - these bad boys were the same. For some reason I figured they were cool as hell while on holiday thousands of miles away from home. Think I wore them for a week before realising how fucking lame they were

My first ever skate shoe was British Knights, but the first 'real' skate shoe was Globe Focus SWYD.
I even bought another Focus with different design afterwards as my next shoe, the tongue was so nicely padded that I never hurt my feet while skating or get hit with my board. I wouldn't mind having a pair nowadays. I remember other kids at school thought I had the sickest shoes because it had naked boobs on them.

You skated Airwalks for 10 years? Cuz those Ipaths are from like '06 at the earliest.

I have a left Heretic 2 under my bed. Found them in a closet four years ago when I started skating again.
Shoes seemed to last forever when I was a kid, maybe cuz my flick was weaker.

This exact colorway, I have the best memories of these shoes. I probably had more ducktape than shoe on my feet at one point of life of these.

I'm curious what influenced your choice of the shoe? Design, brand, skater?
DC was the only skate shoe brand I knew, so I went to shop which sold DC's only. I had a choice between Dyrdek or Kalis shoe, wasn't feeling the Dyrdek so I went with Kalis, and I'm glad I did. I still have the pair stashed in my parents house.

Whoa, my timeline is all fucked up. I was 19 in 2006 and there's no way that gap makes sense. I thought those were from like 2003, but even that is late. I skated a lot of stan smiths and some converse basketball shoes for a long time, but definitely not past 2001. I had a pair of Lakai Worthys (that was a design, right?) which could have been '01. Maybe those were the next skate-specific shoe I had. I had at least 2 pairs of Lakai Kingstons, which I guess were '02 then? I'm feeling old because I can't remember years. Help me out here, people

Pretty sure the first ones were Vans Wallys that I got for cheap at an outlet store, because I got them like five years after they first came out. Loved them.

At least they were fucking tanks back then. I could not imagine having my mom pay some of the prices I've paid for the super minimalist shoes I skated for a few years that lasted ~15-20 hours. Even $65-70 would be too much to admit to them.
These were mine:
I skated some Sears Vans before then but these were the first shoes I bought form a shop with the intention of skating them. It was the end of seventh grade so 2002 I believe?

I saw him at the townpark in Oakland in 2011 and asked him about the shoes cause he had em on. He told me Emerica made him a few pairs when they were rereleased as the OG model not MJ. He even had a custom Phelper tongue emblem.

Damn, I fucking hate felix but those look interesting! Never heard about them. Cons made some crazy shoes back in the day!
Oh dude Felix is an abomination!
I wish I could remember a bit more about the shoe, or how it skated.
Here are a couple more photos of the "el duque".

2000? I believe? This was my very first pair of skate shoes, bought by my Dad after hearing me bitch about skating in soccer shoes.

I'm curious what influenced your choice of the shoe? Design, brand, skater?
Mostly design and color. Went through a black phase, white phase, now on a brown and tan phase. Leather, but now mostly suede.
-
Anybody remember the old etnies or emericas with a face on the tongue with Xs for eyes? My first pair was the grey with gum or white sole ones but can't find a pic. A lot of these posts are bringing back good memories of skate shoe destruction.

Damn dude, I forgot about those until now. I definitely had a pair but cant for the life of me remember what model they were
-
A lot of old etnies had that tongue. The Scam and Lo Cut and a few others had them at some point.
I had a pair of those Felix Cons. The Chany ones too. They were really really stiff and I remember they had metal eyelets and rivets for some reason that would gouge your grip tape.

Vans Rowley XL2 - Had to have green cause my best friends older brother was skating green shoes at the time. Probably 2002?

I can't remember at all if I had those or the xl3 but they were all black and they were all synthetic. You know, because he was a vegan. I remember there were these older dick head skaters who would always start shit with my friends but tell me I was cool because I had rowleys on. I fucking hated them lol. Made me and my homies avoid the skatepark and certain spots.

OG XLTs were the bomb tho!

white/navy DC boxer, sale section of the CCS catalog, summer 2000. i was 9 and i still clearly remember the day they showed up

The first pair of real skate shoes I got from a skate shop were Vans Komodos from 2002. They were really bulky, the only reason I remember them is because I still have the box and it has a basic illustration of the shoes on it. I didn't actually start learning tricks until 2005 and I wore Accels and Mark Appleyard rewires. I remember when I was buying the Appleyards I saw a black/grey pair of Reynold 2s and I still regret not picking those.
FUCK I NEED TO GO BACK

I had those Cabs as well, my cousin purchased them for me as a kid from Jamiel's Shoe World here in Warren, RI.
Note: I think I had these before my DC Rayden's but I certainly only like rode around & did little casper-flip tricks in the grass at the time.
-
Took me forever to find since I had to dig through some random websites, but these were my first pair of skate shoes. I had a pair of World Industries that were absolute shit, but then I started skating these later on. These were great especially after I learned how to kickflip. My colorway was light grey for the ollie panel, toe wall and lace loops and white leather for the toe and sidewall.

funny thing he's a "city boy" and at the time i'd never been too far from my hometown (which is buttfucknowhere in the south of spain) he gave up on skating after a summer in 99-00. One day he brought me his board-skate shoes just in case i'd like to give it a go. Been a junkie since.

Got my Adio's at a shop too. The 'core' brand thing didn't really exist back then and Adio was considered pretty cool iirc.
They were sort of the predecessor to Fallen which was hugely popular among skaters for a while.

Actually now that I think about it their team was really versatile and big.. How come they fell so hard off of skateboarding? Was adio the first major shoe company to die when the athlete companies crashed the market?

This is just my theory so nothing is factual. I think what happened was when Bam was away from skating from getting deep into alcohol, drugs, and shit adios market started crashing. Bam had a huge networth and anything he got involved with it sold and sold in masses this is an example of the jones effect and how powerful of a sells tool it is. Due to his involvement with jackass skaters and non-skaters alike followed Bam like a cult following. Before Viva La Bam nobody knew who the band HIM was once the show became a hit and bam slapped HIMs heartagram on everything HIM became a hit during that time and soon everyone knew who they were. It was free marketing and advertising for HIM to let Bam use their trademark heartagram. Once Bam hit rock bottom you quit hearing of HIM and the adio brand died
-
I think it's a lot simpler: they made shitty shoes, their image was dorky, and they were too slow to adapt to trends.
-
the shaun whites were dope too
(https://i.imgur.com/dmGLwDE.jpg)
I think they went after the middle schooler's money too much, like Lakai did and ended up making their brand look like a joke and too niche compared to Nike, Vans, etc.
That said, I think Fallen and Dekline did a decent job adapting and they still went under. Their shoes were always good generally decent.
-
DC's too. I thought these looked like the Truth's that I couldn't afford (they don't). I was bummed because I couldn't wear through the toecap learning to Ollie.

Yup, my first pair of real skate shoes were Vic’s in seventh grade. I was so hyped until I skated them. The leather lace saver dug into my foot causing blisters and the soles were hard and thin with very little grip. I think I went back to skating my Nike Airs which were probably Flights at the time. Also Cons weapons were the bomb. Basically any basketball shoes of the era were light years away from any skateboard shoes at that point. For me, it wasn’t until 96 when I began buying DCs, which I always liked better than Etnies/es.

This one's a little tricky. I started skating in spring of 6th grade, which immediately led to me hanging with some kinda rough teens and getting busted by the cops for weed at 12 years old that summer ('96). My first pair of skate shoes then were some Airwalk jacked that I got for my birthday.

after that weed bust, some guilt shit kicked in and I kinda regressed back into kiddo status for a while and stopped skating. I picked up a board again at the end of my freshman year('99) and ended up in these bad boys... Globe Gershon:

These are the exact colorway/model of each shoe.
Side note: Those Airwalks would totally fly today, and the Globes are fucking hiking boots.

These
#metoo
Black/blue colorway. Every single person at my school had these.

Vics for me too. Still don't know who this dude was, but I had his shoe
even more era-specific, I cut them down too
Yup, my first pair of real skate shoes were Vic’s in seventh grade.

The all black Vics he's wearing in the ad were my first 'real' skate shoes. Had some sort of knock off Vans hi tops before that, in addition to some pretty embarrassing department store kicks. Traxx... so bad. Think I had Airwalk Cloud Nines after the Vics.
Mine too....you could buy essentially dunks or weapons for $40 at a blow out place...airwalks were like $100. In Canada at least...The Vic's were cheaper so made more sense.....
I don't think Vic's lined up too well with cutting shoes....I remember that was around enigma times ie after the prototypes were too wild...skaters started going backwards.....Vic's were more on the way up..
-
I remember having some airwalks that sort of looked like the Vic but without the ollie pad. Had a couple pair, recall that the soles didn't last too long. Had a pair of black and white 720s after that, then Enigmas.

Those airwalks are so good!! Love the double layered toecap and the assymetry.

Actually a really good shoe from memory. Before these I skated in Dunlop volleys or runners, and I was able to get cheap Osiris for a while after, but the first cut is the deepest!
Sorry, dumb fuck still can’t embed!

If they remade these I'd rock em today.
They did. I am wearing them today. Bought a pair at active last year off their clearance rack. It’s the pro edition for the 30th anniversary. They are really fun to skate on ramps with.
-
Wasn't the story that Adio got bought by some big name company that canned the team over night?
-
These were so sick. I actually wish I could get a reissue. I got these in I think summer of 2000. The sole eventually ripped off when I was learning bordslides at the shitty original skatpark my town had. I also wore them raving.
I had these, same timeframe with the same colorway. They skated so well, better than the K3’s imo. I was surprised that they didn’t catch on as heavy as the K3, which skated like trash but everyone ran em.

I was so pumped

I was so pumped
Not sure if these were the exact ones, but I had a similar pair in red/white. I remember not being stoked on circa after because the soles blew out. Looking back it's because I skated them for 9-12 months
-
from the turn of the century i was in 3rd grade
-
Vans Rowley XLTS, size 9, 20.00 table in a mall skate shop. Was so stoked because I knew who Geoff was and the colors were plain. Then about a month later my mom took me to get ES contracts.
-
ES contracts.
i loved that shoe. i don't remember whose face was on mine but i had these weird brown/goldish ones if i remember right.

wish I could say it was :
but in reality those came first :

because that was the only pair I could afford as a kid with my birthday money at the time. I had been skating in nothing but mall Vans or cheap tennis shoes for 5 or 6 years at the time, for my first 'real' shoe I really wanted the Accel +'s but they ended up being too expensive. the shop couldn't sell those Etnies full price because one of them had a yellow spot from staying in the sun (back when shops would proudly exhibit shoes like this behind the window), they were the only ones I could get and I remember hesitating before reluctantly taking them, I was actually pretty grossed out by how bulky they were and the fucking thunderbolts. it took me a month just to break them in, then they lasted me for over six painful months, until I could finally afford the Accels.

Are these the Vallely 2's? These were my first skate shoes too. I got them in 5th grade a little after I started skating. They were marked down, pretty much the only reason I could get them.
-
Vallely 2's indeed, complete with the huge, black-on-orange thunderbolt on the outsole. apparently there are some on eBay. would have coped for nostalgia's sake if 1/ they weren't so ugly and 2/ they were the Accel +'s.
-
My first real skate shoe together with my first real deck. I recently found this in my parents basement. I am so stoked about the find. Lots of good memories like learning to kickflip and so on. Shoes should be Airwalk Jim if I am not mistaken. Shoe goo was hard to come by where I lived back then (around 1995ish) and my mom would be mad at me everytime I came home because of all the ripped socks haha. I pretty much skated those to death. Going back to tennis shoes was not an acceptable option. Good times.

You really had to date me like that? I got them when I was 8 or 9, so yeah that sounds about right.
Damn I feel old. Think I'll go hang out in the old dudes post up here thread...

I’m coming with you. My first pair of skate shoes was Airwalk Vics in grade six.
