Chad Muska. That dude rips. True legend. Who do you think?
-
Pat duffy, jeremy wray
-
An impossible question but in an alternate universe: The Chief, Hsu, Guy, Oyola, Dennis, Gonz, Gall, Penny, Heath, Westgate.
Definitely agree on Muska, Duffy and Wray, too.
Totally absurd, but I wish: Fowler and Markovich. Split award to Kalis/Stevie :)
I could name like 50 more but it's futile. Too many legends.
-
Heath Kirchart SOTY 2009
-
Steve Berra
Seriously though Fred Gall
-
Natas Kaupas
-
Heath Kirchart in the early 2000's - Sight Unseen/TIS/Hookups/Baker2G(?)
Stevie Williams in 1999 - Chocolate Tour/The Reason
Rob Welsh - Ryde or Die/Free Your Mind era
Dylan Rieder - Gravis Part
Brandon Westgate - Made 1 and all the extra footage from that time.
Jason Lee - Video Days
Jamie Thomas - Misled Youth
Honorable mentions to Rick Howard, Jerry Hsu, Guy and Cory Kennedy.
I just realized I listed a bunch of TWS parts up there, haha.
-
Muska, Jamie T, Dylan, Hsu, Kirchart, Gonz

Foggy was insanely ripped off. Davids part was awesome but that one part didn't add up to how much foggy put out that year.
-
Hey maybe you should keep in mind David wasn't born and raised in fucking southern California

Where you come from has nothing to do with it. The skating speaks for itself. Foggy put out way more coverage for thrasher that year.
Just noticed autocorrect has changed Figgy to Foggy.

Amount of coverage doesnt either ie. AVE
If it was based on amount of coverage I would have to say Suicu was ripped off.
Natas was an excellent addition! Amazing he never received one. Not that he needs it, most of us are aware
-
David's part was greater than all of Figgy's footage that year. Don't be regular.
-
Foggy lol
-
Salabanzi in the Sorry/Real Sorry era. At one point he even had a 30 page interview (well mostly insane skating) in Thrasher)
Imho should have been him instead of TNT in 2002.

That's why trophies and competition in general are stupid. There should be 5 skaters of the year.
-
Gall. Busenitz. Wray. And I'm just gonna sat Connor Champion for no reason other than I really like his style
-
if it's not Even smith this year, Even smith

So what? David's skating was groundbreaking and a thousand times gnarlier than anything Figgy has ever done. Even his made 2 shit doesn't even match it years later. And this idea that getting more tricks in the mag means you skated better is so fucking dumb. Get the fuck over it. David shredded harder. It was his year.

DUDE KENNY ANDERSON DESERVES ONE FOR FUCKING SURE
AND SO DOES FUCKING RODNEY MULLEN & DAEWON !!!!!!!!!

Damn, best one for sure. I can't think of a more blatant robbery. Good job, guys. Let's go home.

I don't disagree, but we all know TNT has Thrasher written all over him, style and sponsor-wise.
Funnily, he won in 2002, when his TRANSWORLD "In Bloom" part came out...

If Salabanzi had won in 2002, then it would have been the third consecutive year that a Flip rider won the SOTY, after Geoff and Arto in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Not to mention that Mark Appleyard won in 2003, the year that Really Sorry came out.
Take from that what you will. Salabanzi is a personal favourite, TNT had a great year too.

Suciu for sure
-
Ishod should be a two-timer.
I never thought about Bastien but I totally agree.

...and? It's skater of the year. As in, skater whose level of skating was unrivaled in that one particular year. Not the 'skater who skated the worst spots twelve years ago... of the year' award.
If Daveed filmed 100% of his footage in Columbia and 0% in Cali your point would be valid, but instead it's completely irrelevant.

Maggie you are really far away to make a good point. Davidcito lives in California since hes ten years old, back then he was sponsored by Vans and Hawk Clothing. He was skating Tampa Am in 2004 when he was 13. He was traveling the world with Globe/Volcom and he wasnt 18 years old. We all know how he was really poor, he talks in the past how he was the guy making money for his whole family at a very young age but he had something special and he was there with the top guns at a really young age surrounded by perfect Cali spots and parks.
Arto was a young boy that lived in Seinajoki when he just started to won the heavy euro contests when at 16 years old, just like that. Then he went to Cali and no many years later he was SOTY. I know Finland is far far far away to be a third world country but the point is that he wasnt surrounded by perfect spots and parks. Instead he was surrounded by really old churchs, forests and snow.
2009 was the worst SOTY decision ever. We made it clear some months ago with a thread exacly like this but instead of just naming people it was about specific about years and people that get "robbed" the award.

Arto was born and raised in fucking Finland. That place makes the East Coast US look like a tropical holiday.

But what if his part was filmed in Cali, Columbia?
-
westgate and Dennis both getting overlooked is infuriating.
gravette being overlooked confusing
PRod (and on a lesser but similar page nyjah) not being on the list reminds me that its thrasher's award and is pretty arbitrary.
-
Dennis really should have won it in 2011 especially after killing Tampa pro like he did and his "Since day one part".
SOTY at this point really wouldn't do him justice.
I also feel like Templeton should have won it at some point in the early 90's after he won damn near everything and did demos non stop.

also didnt ed say he only got the cover of the 3 major mags once in the 90's too and never had another cover? that in itself is a injustice right there

*drops computer on the floor and walk in the kitchen to fix a snack

i'm making too much sense i apologize
-
PJL's WHL 2002
I don't think PJ turned pro until 2003 and Thrasher probably didn't want to have an am as their SOTY. He probably could of added his WHL footage to his really sorry part and stole the ender and SOTY from Appleyard

He probably would have still been on Element if that part didn't come out
