Hey Pals, Basically I'm going travelling soon and going to be doing a few long flights (14 hours++) and I just can't stand the thought of flying.
I dont know the real reason for it, I am claustrophobic but only in tiny tiny spaces. I can't stand turbulence and just get really anxious and can't sleep on flights. The longest flight I've been on is 6 hrs, so this is gonna be a massive difference, and i just want to know if anyone here has the same problems and what they've done to over come them or what meds they've taken.
I will probably go and seee a doc before i head off and try and get something prescribed to knock me out.
-
Taking drugs isn't going to help your anxiety. Max out on pushups in the terminal, run the stairs etc. a lot is acceptable before a long flight. The 14 hour flights aren't that bad if you are tired and take the free drinks, super easy to sleep. I've been flying my whole life and the Aussie ones give you meals and drinks, if you're not sleeping there's a gang of people just talking near the restrooms. Always flown coach it's a shitty setup but flying is MUCH safer than driving just remember that maybe things go better.
-
don't be afraid of flying, it's practically safe everytime
-
just take a fat snooz

Flights gave me panic attacks for the longest time due to some anxiety issues. Med wise, benzos (xanax, klonopin, etc) will help if taken beforehand, but you should probably try and take one before any flight related stuff just to get a feel for how it interacts with you. Before I had access (ie, insurance) to medication, I would usually consume about 3-4 drinks beforehand and that would take most of the edge off. However, for a six hour flight, you'd need to continue consuming booze during the flight to avoid a mid air comedown/hangover. The pills work simpler, the booze method will work with some side effects.
Domestic flights, I usually fill up my quart ziploc with the tiny bottles of alcohol. TSA agents usually laugh their asses off (they've never been taken), and it's only about $11 for 8-9 mini bottles, compared to $40-80 for that much alcohol at the airport or on the plane. There's a rule on most airlines that you can only "consume alcohol that's been served to you", but I don't believe it's a law. In my experience(s), no one cares about you making yourself a few cocktails discretely. Or you can also slam them in the lavatory 2-3 at a time.

if you're any good at drawing that can be a good way to focus on something and lose track of time

I can't stand flying either. Barely do it.
I've never taken any meds for it, so I can't help you there. I would assume it's safe to take a sleeping pill. I've kept myself awake to be tired enough to sleep on a plane and it's still difficult, so for a 14-hour flight a sleeping pill might be best. From what my friends have told me, you should never mix alcohol and pills.
One of my tricks to help me relax is to reserve the seat that's by the exit, since there's more legroom (at least for the airlines I've flown). That way the claustrophobia is cut down a bit. I also use blinders and a neck cushion. To take my mind off things, I do Sudoku puzzles.
Thanks for this thread, curious to see what others say since I hope to go to Europe for the first time soon.

2016 was the second safest year in aviation history. Knowing that might make you feel a bit better. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/advice/2016-air-accidents-aviation-safety/ (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/advice/2016-air-accidents-aviation-safety/)

I had to spend a 21 hour flight with a few stops between 2 giant dudes from Saipan. Tylenol PM.
-
Two clonazepam(1mg) and you'll enjoy the entire flight
-
On a flight from LA to London I took some xanax, codeine, sleeping pills, and the alcohol that they were serving and I'm pretty sure I almost died. Don't do that.
Now I just put on some relaxing music and look out the window to calm myself. It's safer than driving.

Well yeah thats a little overdone lol. Glad you didnt die though.
Seriously 1mg of clonazepam about an hour before your flight and itll be nice and relaxing. Dont drink alcohol though.
Any dr on earth will prescribe you these for a flight

do you have a dog?

Most airlines have in seat entertainment systems where you can pick from a bunch of TV shows and movies. That helps pass the time. I flew to Egypt via Germany on Lufthansa and they had full seasons of TV shows and a lot of movies. Add in some noise cancelling headphones, some drinks and/or pills and you'll be good. Bring some books or a Kindle too.
-
You guys are fucking hardcore. What happened to taking some dramamine? It's over the counter medication and works great to just lull you to sleep if you're not too desensitized. Put it under your tongue so it melts a little and numbs your mouth, then wash it down with something and try and sleep. It worked for all of the long flights I've taken.

I back this up. The airlines usually give some shitty earphones that are good enough, but it's always better to bring something. The audio is compressed like a Metallica song, so it's loud on whatever phone you're using. They had some rather insane selections on the last time I went to America. Lots of Chinese and Japanese movies. Keep your reading light and pacey, don't bother bringing War and Peace to the plane.
Tracer's advice about exercise is good. I like to walk as much as I can before a flight, and I'm *that* guy in flights who finds any excuse to get up and stretch my legs and walk... sitting on your ass for hours is never a good thing.

This or if they have movies or shows on that you can watch (which I'd imagine they would for that long of a flight), then take full advantage of that. When I flew to London I watched Everybody Loves Raymond episodes the whole way there, made the flight feel so much faster than it was. Also, get up, stretch, walk to the bathroom or w.e every now and then so you don't risk getting a blood clot.

That was my first thought but OP said the flights were going to be 14+ hours so I'm assuming he's going someplace with a quarantine period for animals.
I realize this is 100% easier said than done, but if turbulence gives you anxiety, just try to take a look at one of the flight attendants when you encounter it. I've been on a few flights with really bad turbulence (I fly a good amount and I'm talking < 5%) and I noticed even when it felt really bad, the flight attendants were chilling... serving drinks, chatting it up with each other. You got to think they fly way more than any of us so if they aren't stressed about it, there is zero reason for you to be. And when pilots say they are looking adjusting the route to avoid turbulence, it's for comfort. Not safety. An air pocket is never going to take a plane down.
Also, sit as close to the wings as possible. That's the most stable spot.

not what i meant

I've never flown but codeine is good. You don't care about anything. I used to take it and just sit in a chair for hours, doing nothing. Totally content. Lost my appetite though.

My bad... I just assumed since I got a note from my doctor to fly with my dog (just on his, not in a carrier of any sort) because of anxiety.

Codeine is an opiate though and gets you high.
Clonazepam is a benzo and just kills anxiety very effectively.
Its not hardcore at all for rare occasional use. Pretty addictive with long term use/abuse though ie stabbedbywigger injecting benzos
I used .5mg of clonazepam for an MRI(clausterphobic and you cannot move) and it worked like a fuckin boss. Lasted like 24 hours too and I slept amazing afterwards
-
xanax works great for mild anxiety when flying. works best when paired with some good over ear headphones and your favorite skate video(s)

best insta photos too. thats what flying is all about.
i think they plane would actually have to be going down for me to start panicking. ive been on some flights with gnarly turbulence and other people have been freaking out, but i just sit there thinking "well, nothing i can do about this."

you need to talk to your dogs dr.

Yeah, Benzos are the best bet for the actual on-flight anxiety, but mine extends into the days right before the flight as well.
My last flight was after spending a few days in Vegas, so it was acceptable for me to be at least drunk the last few days of the trip.
It's not always practical to go on a three day xanax run on the lead up to a flight though, so I generally avoid flying now.
I'm fine with it really though. I was fortunate enough to get to visit a decent amount of other countries when I was younger, before I really developed this anxiety, and I actually usually enjoy traveling by train.
Really my biggest issue with this phobia, is that I worry it could hold me back career-wise in some way, later in life.

Sneak some marijuana onto the plane and light up a blunt in the bathroom
jk. Maybe just drink a beer before the flight at a bar to relax a bit? I hate flying too, not because of anxiety but because its so boring. But just think of what you'll be doing when you land or the things you'd want to do at your destination. It will pay off and you'll be glad you flew 14 hours to be doing something that you've never experienced elsewhere.
That's what I usually do at least.
A bit off topic too, but for those of you who smoke cigs, how do you guys deal with flying for 14 hours without a cig? I don't smoke but I've always wondered this.

That never bothered me, although i always thought it would so id bring nicorette. Get me off the plane though and its like 6 smokes back to back.
Glad i fuckin quit
-
Hella nicotine gum, and sneaking off to the bathroom to use an e-cig. Even though they say not to, they never know.
I think I even did dip on an airplane, but that may have been a bus/train trip.
Also, I always love Tracer's airport advice. And who exactly are these delinquent passengers you've been spending time with, just hanging around the airplane bathroom having a chat?

If I had the means I would buy a parachute for a flight and carry it on. Parachute all the way, gotta save yourself, cant worry about the others. If you cant afford a parachute just stick benzos up your butthole.

For a first time user, im sure 3 or 4mg of clonazepam and you could jump outta the plane and thoroughly enjoy the ride down

Yeah, you wont even be forming memorys while free falling so its a win win either way. No fear like the shirts bruh.

take lsd and or 5 hour energy
-
i usually never ever can sleep on planes but one time i got this weed edible and i slept the entire flight like 16 hours from meal to meal.
-
Cheers dudes yous are all legends, some great advice in this thread. Like someone said further up, Its not like gnarly anxiety with flying half the problem is sitting still for that long and knowing I won't be able to sleep!
-

this can be good but can also turn south real quick if you're the anxious type and it just makes you stay awake
-
My advice would be don't take the drugs and just accept your fate.
I used to be super scared of flying with sleepless nights up to a couple of weeks before take-off. I tried sleeping pills and took them at the wrong time so I was super dazed during a 4hour stop off.
Anyway, my wife made me understand that fear of flying was going to prevent me from seeing the world which is stupid if you want to make the most of your life.
Also, if it helps, I try and visualise the take-off and landing like being in a car and accessing a freeway where once you're on it it's smooth sailing. Turbulence is like bumps in the road.
When in doubt look at the stewards. If they're scared then you can be.
ps Why does turbulance always hit when they're serving food and drinks?
pps With climate change, expect a lot more turbulance.

Klonopin helps. I got weird about flying (and other shit) in my early twenties and the klonopin helped me keep the anxiety down. I don't feel spacey on anything when I take it, I just don't ratchet up the anxiety like I used to. I still takes some when I fly.

Thats why I like clonazepam/klonopin/kpins, you dont get "high" or anything, not even tired. You just dont have any anxiety.
If you have alot of anxiety though klonopin helps you sleep amazing since it prevents that "cant turn off my thinking" kinda feeling
Also its cheap as fuck. I get .5mg tabs 300 for $17. Shit lasts along time

No just from my family dr. Its actually cheaper but there is an $11 dispensary fee

If you're medicine averse or generally an anxious person, flying is always a good lengthy time to practice diaphragmatic breathing and mindfulness. Trying to get rid of anxiety will only make it more problematic. A healthier approach is to accept anxiety for what it is (a thought/sensation) in order to not to be controlled by it. Benzos sound great for flights, but be prepared for crazy rebound anxiety.

Rebound only comes with long term use.
But yeah breathing exercises are a great idea! Challenging yourself to overcome your fears works wonders

In general, I think most people don't get it from short-term use. However, people react to it differently. I've worked at a lost of different places, but I'm currently a psychologist at the VA and work primarily with residential stress disorders and substance abuse. Granted this is an extreme setting, but I have seen people go into full blown panic even after short-term use of benzos.
Maybe I'm just sensitive, but I took it a benzo on a flight from D.C. to Rio and was completely blacked out the whole way. I woke up with super intense anxiety for an hour or so. Then again, alcohol does the same thing to me.

Yeah its a possibilty but very rare.
You do sound sensitive especially if alcohol does the same thing. Gaba receptors are funny like that.
But even the smallest dose would be considered safe and effective, like a .5mg clonazepam broke in half. Most drs will tell you to try it before the flight just to see how it works
Magnesium bigylcinate is a good natural option as is l theanine
