Title: Riding your board backwards
Post by: Tracer on August 13, 2017, 03:35:38 PM
When I started skating I asssumed the tail was the nose because it was bigger. Skated for under a year like that until I went to this metal ramp and this local hero kickflip nosemanualed the flat first try. Instantly flipped it around and never went back. I was never a mongo kook that just never made sense to me. I was surprised to learn there's a handful of pros who skate the board backwards. Decenzo, Matt Berger, a few others. Personally I can't stand big tails, my 3 flips suffer the most. There's 2 tricks I do off the nose.

Anyone on SLAP still rocking the backwards kit? What kind of shapes do you guys like? Personally can't stand squared off noses, and flat no pop wood.

I wasn't 100% sure kind of got a deja view.

Always good to hear new opinions as things change every day.

When I play SKATE I'll do a kickflip, then later another kickflip with the board backwards and specify "you gotta do it off the nose." People love me.

Nate Broussard does something similar. He'll do a trick and then he'll do the same trick with a boner.

Smart. If you can get a game with only grabs, no complies, and manuals that's pretty fun too.

Walmart has twin tail technology but sometimes they have a logo on the grip so you have to obey it. My trucks are different so its more about the trucks than the board, my front is more loose and carvy.

feels so weird after you get a shit ton of razor tail.

when i would get boards secondhand as a young grom, i'd always skate the nose as the tail; way more pop left in that side of the board. in fact for a while, i would be OCD about razor tailing both sides of the board somewhat evenly.

I don't ride my board backwards, but I do skate my nose as my tail when riding switch.  I skate more switch/nollie anyways so I usually get razor-nose way before razor tail.  I'm really not sure if anyone else has this problem but it's simply just a burden I hold.

i used to think skating your board of the nose was skating switch, kickflip of the tail then switch flip of the nose all while remaining in regular stance

risers do a better job than switching your board around, but yeah i kinda get where your guys are coming from.
( i dont do it but i prefer risers., as im always stoned as fuck and i need a bit of exra time between my tail and the ground).

Did it in the beginning because I only had an 80's board before my first "modern" and had zero exposure to skating. Made sense.

This. My trucks are always asymmetrical, so riding backwards is a no-go.

Yeah, and I revert right before popping so everyone knows it's switch.

I honestly could not land the tricks I do switch if I did them off the tail.

I find it easier to do switch 360 flips off of the tail, but that's about it.

why is the nose larger and at a greater angle on some boards? does it help drag and flip when you kick your foot upward? when i was a kid i really liked reese forbes and donger so I thought that the tail needed a greater angle for greater pop.

I always thought it was for ollies, so your front foot can lift the board easier! And a flatter tail for quicker pop..

props to anyone from the olde school/anyone who prefers their deck sans-nose.
i just can't imagine the act of skateboarding without a second tail. it's basically a different sport. I can't imagine why skateboarding was popular before the twin tail. too difficult.

Pretty sure it was Muska who said this in an interview before. Not sure about Greco, but quite possible.
I remember my cousin who was older than me started doing it 'cause Muska was the dude back in the early 2000's. I remember tripping out on it since it made setting up nollie a little more difficult, but then I realized Muska didn't really skate switch or nollie too much.

I've always skated backwards. I tried to shake it once when I first was told I was and then again 5 or 6 years ago just to see. Never felt right. I always wondered if people noticed

not one popsicle skateboard has ever been made where the tail is bigger than the nose you complete fucking moron.

I'm old, so I blame everything on my gear whenever I suck.

But seriously:
I can't skate of the nose, except for nollie stuff of course.
Everything else is strictly off the tail.

I also tried a habitat Guru deck a while back which basically was a double-tail.
I couldn't land shit becaus emy balance seemed off. I gave it away to a young kid (he's good!) and bought a FA deck with the biggest nose possible.

Sean Payne comes to mind as someone who rides their board backwards and he always killed it, so obviously it works for some people but I feel like it would be super weird to do this long term.

i always use the nose when i try bluntslides, on round flatbars mostly, way easier like that, more room
tailslides are great too this way
but i'm 40yo, maybe i start to lose my mind

Millencolin - Use Your Nose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3YTC6BiD5o#)

Use your tail as your nose going switchstance...

Anyway, tail stalls using the nose seem to work better for me. Weird.
