is FINALLY up on the tube!!!
I know a lot of other Aussies claim vids like demin soup et. al. are what influenced them the most, but my crew worshipped this vid for a long long time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOYIChlLGfQ
some thoughts:
- Gordo! Dude ripped so hard
- Alex Smith was a lot better than his footage here shows, he dropped some serious bangers on the Sydney scene back in the day
- converse one stars trending hard!
- Wade and Ben Cox skating to the beastie boys is divine
- I've easily skated 90% of those spots and it's giving me nostalgia goosebumps
- Theres some footage of all the old tours like Big day Out etc. Good to see heads like Montessi, AP, Salman, Markovich, Kareem and Koston when they were in their prime.
- Shane Wallace, while not an Aussie, had some mean pop and a clean bag of tricks considering when this was released.
- warning: for 90's purists only, quality is still better than the latest Palace vid tho!
- Even spotted some SLAP heads in there skating though I'm not going to name names
- ♪Booty-full, Beautiful♪
-
Name names!
-
Name names!
nah it's kinda like the BA situation, if they wanna come out then they're free to do so

DELVECHIO LICKING DOG SHIT IN THIS ONE?
yup, 20 bucks mate!
Who's the Italian looking guy with the bleached hair in the thumb nail talking shit on the security guard at World Trade?
-
I could watch Ben Cox clips all day and i'll always associate him with Lisarow train station for some reason

you and I would get on then. Got any good Ben stories?
thats steve rose.
hmmmm I knew, or at least knew of, pretty much everyone in that vid but I don't remember him...

not an ozzie obviously but I spent 3 months in sydney in 99 so I'm curious to see this! Merci.

you'll recognize a lot of the spots then. Manly bowl is way to fresh when this came out though, the only real graffiti there was Wade's PIST piece in the back corner. Did you ever skate Manly bowl Frenchie? It was my local for years

yeah I did! just once though. it's crazy to think I considered it a nice spot back then......the new parks make the old ones look like shit!
I remember the wood mini ramp at Bondi surprised me too, that thing was super steep. Actually my favorite spot in Oz might have been in Melbourne....(sorry!). That smallish double bowl in a park, can't remember the name, I think it's gone now.

yeah Fitzroy that was it! super fun little spot

ahhhh that was sick, ive skated most the sydney spots, my weekends growing up were spent skating either cook and phil cathedral, martin place, warming up at hyde park and usually ending with some beers at chifley. Makes me miss it, havent been back to home for 3 years now.
-

hahaha they redid the front part of it a few years back now which gave it a lot more flow but yeah, there's fucking amazing parks all over Australia now. Back in the day though pretty much every o/s tour would do a demo at Manly if they were going to be Sydney.

fuck quaintly, you sure know your skate history. It may well have been, I just assumed it was Wade because it was his brand and I'd seen him a couple times there doing graffiti while he was skating. Wade used to fucking MURDER that place!!! Then again so many OG Manly heads (Peanut/ Donald etc.) used to kill it on the regular too! You remember when Lee Springett (sp?) used to just ollie up the funbox off of flatground for shits and giggles?

They just painted it. It's still rough as guts
-

no, they extended it (on the parking lot side with a big flat bank and also connected the quarter on the right-hand side) probably a little over 10 years ago and it made it infinitely better in terms of getting some actual speed/ lines. In plebs-era after you hit the rail, you rolled into the sketchy carpark, now there is a huge flat bank there. Any old Manly local will be able to verify this, or you could just look at old vs. new footage.
I don't really want to link scooter vid on here but if you youtube Keirle Park Manly you'll see what I mean. Looks like it also may have gotten yet another facelift fairly recently but I haven't lived in that area since 2008.
***
If you want rough as guts parks go to St Leonards (or Avalon before it was resurfaced) but that's not what this thread is for! Spread that mid-90s Aussie skate love Suit!
-
just watched it a little bit of this (at work)
is that a mini Michael with the last part?
-
is that a mini Michael with the last part?
It sure is! Dropping lines like a full-grown adult. Dude could get mad tech and yet still do massive hammers
-
hey is that the redfern skatepark at 8'50 ? with that metal vert/middle ramp?
-
hey is that the redfern skatepark at 8'50 ? with that metal vert/middle ramp?
I don't recognize it and I'm not even sure Redfern had a park in the 90's (at least not that I'm aware of).
Maybe it's the early incarnation of Newcastle? apparently it is...
-
Old chatswood ;D ;D ;D
All of it really. Live in fairlight now so manly is my local but grew up in chatswood. Started skating a few years after all this tho but definitely appreciate seeing spots in their earlier form/that are now gone completely

Old chatswood ;D ;D ;D
those were the days huh? Isn't that brick hip at some church of scientology or something? Definitely a lot harder to skate than it looks. Chatswood now has one of the worst parks in Sydney that shit was so lumpy/ badly designed ... still not as bad as St Ives though :P
You don't remember old Redfern ?
I don't, I think the furthest "west" I ever went was central station records LOL but mostly stuck to Chatty and the CBD. Honestly Redfern was pretty sketch back then ...
-
Redfern is still kinda sketch.

;) I used to do one of my subjects at high school through the open high school when it was still in Redfern, place was mad sketchy for a white 15 year old in the mid 90s. One time I went we had to use a makeshift classroom because someone had burnt down the building we sued to study in!

I also missed this post Dr. Yeah, I miss Sydney a lot these days too, haven't been back in nearly 10 years now. Did you used to skate world trade too, or was it before your time?
White marble ledges out the back of Wynard station was such a magic spot too.
It's funny, but someone from Melbourne was commenting on how dead the CBDs were back in the day and it's so true; now the city's are packed even on Sundays :'(
-
yeah I do remember Redfern as pretty ghetto-ish....the only place like that I saw in Oz I think.
Fun fact: on my first day in Sydney, I thought ok, I'll just skate from downtown to Bondi, so I get to know the city a bit. I had no idea the distances were so big! I was used to skating everywhere in Paris but in Sydney....nope. Think I ended up taking the bus!
-
It's funny to watch this to see how little skateboarding has changed over all these years.
I was skating the post office steps in Newcastle wearing one stars just over a year ago (was there lots of homeless people living there in the 90s also?)

history repeats huh? Go watch a polar edit and then watch rubbish heap; dudes are basically trying to look like early 90s Mike V.
I actually kinda want some one stars now but I think that's more to do with my Beastie Boys obsession

I remember sundays being perfect for skating the city of sydney, most spots were completely empty. I skated the marble ledges for sure but i cant even place where the world trade centre is/was but im sure i would have had to skate there at some point, my memorys so bad

yeah apart from the little crews of other skaters and random bums there was no one around. world trade is just before you pull into wynard, like if you caught the bus from the northern beaches you would get off at the stop before wynard. it had two sections though; the top half was the 5 stair and wooden ledges (where gordo is doing the switch kick flip trick tip in plebs) and the bottom part was mainly flat ground but had a nice little black marble ledge (bust factor was high though). If you look up Lang Park, York street on Google maps you'll see that there's now a Dominos Pizza out the back where the 5 stair was
there's a church across the road too

Some plebs heads in there still ripping +20 years later!

^ Quality dude.
-
Damn Davo was good. So many tricks in here I'd seen photos of in Slam, great to finally see them.
Wasn't Gordo doing video stuff back in the day? What's he doing now?
-
Fuck. That’s rad. Know so many of the spots.
Anything into the pit was no joke. That thing sucked. But everyone skated it
-

Waterloo ? Nah that was on basketball courts. Not sure where that is. We used to skate there twice a week in the mid to late 90’s.

yeah, Davo was on another level for a few years there, I know he made it to the states so I wonder why he didn't get the shine he deserved? Yes, Gordo made plebs he was actually a really good skater too. Not sure what he's doing these days but do you remember when he was in the moove milk ads?
Pretty sure the youtube channel that posted plebs is his, not super active or anything but some gems in there.
Fuck. That’s rad. Know so many of the spots.

yeah, lots of OG spots in there huh? crazy to think that the majority of tricks done into the pit were on sub 50mm wheels :o
