Title: pants in skateboarding

This post got me thinking we should have a thread about the most iconic pants in skateboarding

Pants have always been important part in skateboarding. Maybe the second most important piece if cloth right after shoes. With the current trend of patterning in trousers we have seen some questionable choices in video parts. some names that come to mind are sean "pablo" murphy with scotch checker wannabe sid vicious, kevin Rodriquez in tactical supreme pants and say nick trapasso in pyjamas not forget that triple camo dude..

What are your favorite or memorable pants in skate videos?

1992 Tom Penny. Natas shorts. Duffel. Muska' s red capris. Trujillo/asselin/Rowan short guys, baggy dickies. MJ and Guy can fight over who gets to own the straight leg brown cords

Biebel looking like a damn genie in Fully Flared is the best duh!

Yaje's pants game is nice too, weird without going full blown mid 2000s Jason Dill.

But from a practical level early 2010s Gilbert Crockett is probably where most people should reside. Sometimes dickies, sometimes jeans, never shorts unless its a million degrees, but why are you skating when its that hot go swim somewhere.

Pants are so played out.  I just show up at the park, "All shirt, no pants, like Winnie the Pooh."

Seriously, that Welsh photo is awesome for some reason.  He's about the only dude who could pull off those sweats and a basketball jersey.  It's getting to be shorts season here in DC.  I'm not going Puig short, but I do like skating in shorts when it's warm out.

My friend and I like to call remarkable pants in skate videos 'favourite pants'. Glad to see Muska's favourite pants included.

Also, this thread reminds me of the purple sweat pants section in Switch Mongo.

Carhartt double front pants are the dumbest skate pants ever. They do have a nice look to them but as a carpenter the only time you would ever wear them is for framing and  concrete formwork. They are so stiff they stand up on their own. I often skate in carhartt pants on workdays but they are the lighter ones but have a similar look. Im 36 and gave up and skate in sweatpants mostly now. Belts make me have to pee cuz i drink too much coffee.

Do they use a softer fabric? Either way I don't like the double front. Too much material. I work mostly inside and the light carhartts last me a couple of years and are manageable for an after work or mid day skate in the colder months.

This seems like the right place to ask.

Why are people cutting the bottoms off their jeans again? Is this to reduce restriction? To encourage ankle trauma? I do not understand.

All of my jeans are second hand, and sometimes they come too long in the legs, so I just cut the bottoms off. I noticed it enhances ventilation which is quite nice. It is also a quick procedure.

I could be wrong here, but I feel like Carhartt probably has something at least close to this color around that price range.

yeah, they had some atrocious shit like the obama trackpants but their skate jeans had some nice washes like these  light blue-violet ones below that i've been struggling to find in any other jeans (and i'm not willing to pay more than $25 for pants to skate in so there's that)

the small wheels era (early 90s) was all about those giant jeans cut off at the bottom and left unhemmed so you’d get loose threads at the bottom.
[close]

This seems like the right place to ask.

Why are people cutting the bottoms off their jeans again? Is this to reduce restriction? To encourage ankle trauma? I do not understand.

definitely a trend, half for trend half function I cut the bottom of some long jeans I had, had to burn the loose threads every other day it sucked.

Tim o connor always had impeccable pant style. Also his shirt to pants ratio was on point.

Unfortunately tiago blows it by not wearing a long enough shirt to go along with his baggy pants. Does not look good when your pants are big and your shirt is short and wide.

Ghetto Wear shorts were the best though. Bright New Deal pants were thinner than Blind jeans, which cut that fabric weight down. No wonder everyone was burning worms, we all had 20lbs of pants on.

Andy Stone was my mid-90s pants role model. He was the first I remember to move back to the fitting baggy look, which seems to be the current standard. He always looked so clean. Here is an excellent pants part from the era:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9mq8HZvhHE

Haven't done the research but I think D.C. skaters always dressed well, Stone, Martinez, Igei etc,, Definitely emulated some looks from that Pulaski article in Thrasher from the mid 90s (light denim with green Adidas Campus, college crewneck and an MLB fitted)

I had a small clothing brand during the big pants era, and jeans etc were my specialty. I still make pants from time to time, but my go to khakis are the Old Navy ultimate straight. They always end up on sale at some point and the fit is perfect - can't stand pants that taper so much they don't fit over the top of your shoe.

Depends if you're in the US or Canada. They're cheaper to begin with in the US, plus the dollar is worth more. I feel like they also go on bigger sales more often in the US. In Canada the base price is right around $40, but they're almost always at least 20% off. I tend to buy them when they're 50% off or buy one get one free. Amazing fit, plenty of length options, soft stretch twill. Make sure you get the ultimate straight, or the broken in straight. Everything else at Old Navy seems to suck.

Personally, I don't understand skating in slim fit AND non-stretch pants. I remember hearing about Corey Duffel buying Levis and sewing them into a skinny fit. How do you bend your knees and jump like that??? Even stretch pants start clinging to my knees with any bit of leg sweat.

Emerson Chino for $14-20 at Banana Republic clearance racks. They don’t last as long as Carhartt, but they can take a couple slams. Plus, they’re the comfortable, no matter how many times they get washed.

Gap/Old navy/ Bananarama pants are all cool if you dont mind crotch blow outs. Cant recommend them one bit for skating. even Levis 501s ripped hella easy. Work pants is a must for skating. Do you possibly have thick thighs? The only people I can think of that I know who rip crotches in pants are a bit on the thick side. I have never blown out a crotch in my entire life - not even when I made a batch of stretch corduroy pants that ended up being very fragile. Other parts ripped, but not the crotch. I'm also a super flexible dude who's legs sometimes practically go over my shoulders when I slam, so my pants get put through the ringer. Still, no ripped crotches. Sounds like there's some other factor resulting in you ripping crotches. In my experience, people who wear pants that are too tight/small for them are the ones who have that issue.

I was a Duffel clone for a long time, spray on jeans were actually easier to skate in than the looser cuts i wear nowadays. there's a point where your women's jeans are so tight that its basically a second skin and you're almost as flexible as you would be if you were naked. They are prone to horrendous crotch blow outs though but I still get those now.. ive never had a pair of jeans/trousers that haven't eroded at the crotch and I do not have thick thighs in the slightest.. super acidic ball sweat to blame?

I feel like Dela is largely responsible for the appearance of workwear Carhart's in the north american game. Europe has been on the carhart tip for awhile, which I like, but the euro ones don't have the same weight to the canvas and hang differently. This is a trend that I think will keep growing, but it's already getting a bit irksome.

I wonder? I've made pants for over 25 years, the only thing that accounts for "eroded" material/seams at the crotch is when the pants are too tight, or the person has thick thighs (which is essentially the pants being too tight). Pants with limited mobility (no stretch, poor design) can rip at the crotch, but they wouldn't wear away - same with poor workmanship - the pants would rip, not eventually wear down and then rip. Do you ride motorcycles a lot possibly? That could contribute to wear without the pants being as tight.

Also, ^ right now we're in a period when looking as goofy as possible is basically what's hot, so, cue the overalls.

Love them too but the dye they used on the black pair I got was garbage. After 2 washes they faded to a weird brownish grey usually reserved for overworn slipknot hoodies mall goths tend to wear. Not to mention they're dumb short.

5' 11". I got a medium and if they're at my waist there's a 3" gap between the bottom of the hem and my shoes, which doesn't bother me, except that when I push they fucking ride up almost to my knee.

This and The Austyn reference from earlier. I think the key is to buy the right size waist in a slim straight / modern straight legged pant and for the length go up a size so they meet at the ankles.
