Just heard a lot of people lost their jobs there today. High-level people like marketing directors and editors.
Is the Mag done? My best guess would be yes! Thoughts on Transworld if its done?
-
I thought they had already gone out but I saw pic of a recent cover.
I’ve heard Phelps and other say thrasher was the “last mag standing”
I guess I just assumed that meant all the other major ones had stopped months ago.
-
TWS will be dead before 2020. Good riddance. Really wish Thrasher would die out already too.
Skateboard media needs a hard reset.
-
A better title would have been 'Transworld of shelves'

That Hugo cover was hot fire though
-
TWS failed because they're clueless millenials.

I hope it's not true. Thrasher isn't really my style. There's a bunch of good people who work at TWS too - sucks if they're out of a job.
-
I have a subscription ): I already paid for the next year ):
-
Trackers don't turn.
-

Hopefully more subscriptions to low card

this sucks if true, how can there be only 1 skate mag out there nowadays?
-
Didn't sell enough t-shirts. That'll get ya every time.

The digital age has done quite a number on typography. I’m surprised the mags lasted this long especially with how they have such a big social media/internet presence. Figured they would of all went full digital a few years back.

Seriously bummed if true.

Guess "Duets" really is their last video.

I'm curious, because TWS doesn't have a whole lot of employees. Jaime, Blakely, Mack, Blair, Kobriger - I'm not sure who else permanently works there, but it's not many more. All of those guys are "marketing directors and editors", so if true then it must be done.
*Unless you're talking about TEN, the guys who own Transworld, rather than employees of the magazine itself
-
The budget there seem pretty tight, if you've looked at any of the recent issues 100 percent of the content is related to advertising dollars. I could see if Nike, Adidas, or DC pulled advertising the could be done. I'm also sure it's owned by some multimedia company by now and margins of a few grand a month may have not made it a worthwhile endeavor. Sucks cuz I love mags and was way more into Transworld than thrasher.
-
That would suck, I grew up on that mag
-
Who picks up these magazines in print or buys the video? I respect transworld for their more nerdy content but I know they were sort of aimed at a general audiences demographic.
Do people who wear the thrasher hoodie and don’t skate get a subscription? Like do hot girls who wear cool band tees listen to the music? Im sure a lot of them do so I’m curious about this.
I was into 43 when it was around and like to pick up grey, quiet leaf and free once in a while.
-
^^^^^43 was dope. Still have some mags and even bought some prints. Too bad it didn't go anywhere.
-
How the tables have turned Tranworld dominated the 90s with there glossy mags and epic videos.. Thrasher was so low budget the mag had faded photos and we're super thin with terrible videos .. They basically took over from selling sweatshirts becoming trendy in the early 00s..Nobody was wearing those in the 90s besides guys who wore shorts and knee high socks with vans or airwalks.. Even how popular DLX is now boggles my mind they only had the outcast pro's back then.. To say Real has a better team than Chocolate and alot others is crazy
-
I've only gotten my hands on one single issue in a long time, and I really think it's a great mag. It's not glossy anymore and is a lot shorter, but they really went in on beautiful high-res printing and really high-quality skate photography later and it's sort of a thing of beauty
-
Bummer. :'(
-
The way they talked about "Duets" made this sound likely. They produced some of the most iconic videos in skating. Modus and Sight Unseen will always be two of my favorites.

Real had Gonz in the late 90's and Cardiel. They didn't only have "outcast" pros.

-
Extra shitty if true for editor Brian Blakely, who just lost an arm
-
This is a bummer if true. TW hasn't been so great lately but they still put out a mag that's worth looking at for the photos alone. I'll admit I was kinda worried when I noticed 2 double page ads for the new NB Westgate shoe and then a page of editorial content covering the same shoe. I feel like their operating budget has been pretty tight since the revamp and switch to bimonthly. Diminishing advertisers and subscribers probably just makes it not profitable anymore for the corporate owners. Bleh.
-

Berrics bought them out around 2014 I'd say, they were already pretty thin for the past year and i swear some 9 question interviews. Then it literally became a goddamn skateboarding calendar with the photography and had a bunch of articles that would tell you to go to the berrics site to check out more. the Skateboard Mag was great though, bought an Aaron Suski cover at 7-11 like the week i got a board, looking for "skateboard magazines" how close.
Alas, RIP transworld if true. Always found something of value in the mags but early on ever understood the "legacy" of transworld videos mentioned in the mag as RFF and Hallelujah were the only TWS vids i saw as a kid.
On an unrelated note I met Gershon Mosley at age 12 and he told me backside flipped the gap we were at in TWS "the reason". we looked it up on imdb that night, had never heard of it

-
I will never celebrate the death of any skate media. If true, I will miss the photography the most. The subtitles picked up on a still images capture a spirit in skateboarding that just doesn't translate to video.
-
I will miss the mag but I can imagine any kid below 20 who has grown up with internet and is used to a daily overdose of clips is not going to buy a skateboard magazine with pictures from 3 months ago.
They might fire most of the staff, then work with freelance staff only and keep the magazine running with maybe 2 people. Common in media these days.
Over the years they have done really cool things. Just gonna leave this here.

I had kind of let Transworld drop out of the rotation after they redid the mag and the website, but recently I found my self going there to see some of their video content. The video part rewind with pros was great, Interests was short lived but nice, and hell I didn't hate Skaters favorite Skaters

Good find, props to the magazine for covering this and being open about it.
"According to our source, AM has no interest in investing any money into the business. Apparently it’s a “slash and burn” acquisition, with AM buying TEN for cheap and making a quick buck by selling the action sports titles individually".
I'm curious to see where Transworld ends up. All of the magazines in Europe are now skater-owned and free, funded entirely by advertising revenue and closer to passion projects than businesses. And, to be honest, they're probably the best/most refreshing magazines in the world. I don't know if Jaime Owens or anyone else has the means or desire to buy TWS, but it could be a really positive move...
-
Sounds like the whole genre is in rather dire straits, which isn't surprising, magazine sales aren't what they used to be.
That said, there probably is a bit of skulldugery with ad sales, confederations of NorCal hardgoods manufacturers and a certain other publication that created an uncompetitive environment that doomed TWS.
-
Yeah losing your job is just like being executed

its been a minute since i really cared about what theyve done but that early to mid 00s era was the best. those vids are alltime classics and they ran the best photos. still a huge bummer to see em go down. times are a-changin.

That shit is corny and can also go away anytime now.
Transworld might be more profitable if the mag was chalk full of trannies. Maybe a nice spread of photos taken from the “asses” thread.

Thrasher wishes they had weight like that. You been listening to Phelps preaching at Potrero?
TWS died of non-skate acquisition.
I don't think Thrasher killed TWS but it can't have helped that TWS wasn't going to be getting significant ad buys from Anti Hero, Krooked, Real, Thunder, Spitfire, Venture, Indy, Santa Cruz, Creature, Krux, OJ's, etc.
In the past that was offset by SoCal brands like Powell and Navy recruitment shit but when times got lean, TWS didn't have the built in buffer that Thrasher does.
-
I heard a rumor that Rupert Murdoch media empire bought up TEN (who owns TWS), and a quick internet search confirmed it: https://www.forbes.com/sites/tonysilber/2019/02/01/american-media-acquires-14-adventure-sports-media-brands-from-ten-publishing/#775b1763bae0 (https://www.forbes.com/sites/tonysilber/2019/02/01/american-media-acquires-14-adventure-sports-media-brands-from-ten-publishing/#775b1763bae0)
Obviously Transworld was struggling and it felt like its days were numbered, so it is hard to imagine it surviving this.
Which is such a bummer. Aside from their legacy, which is huge, Jamie Owens had turned it around from one of the worst mags out about a decade ago to the best right now (I don't see any of the non-US mags, however).
I just think kids these days don't want to look at anything not on a screen and the Thrasher won the website game, and the branding game, and there you have it.
-
Transworld and Thrasher were always complimentary in my opinion because Thrasher was a Bay Area brand through and trough while Transworld represented the San Diego / Southern California scene much better. If true, I'm very sorry to see them go. Fun park too

Print was king because there was no real alternative. If you circle back to the old issues, you can still be captivated by nostalgia.
However, if you take a critical look to what was actually printed in the mags, there was not much substance. Good photography, hype interviews and some cool stories from the road. Nowadays, stuff like that gets it's minute of shine via social media and it then forgotten.
Skateboarding is not a complex topic, there is little to be written about it month after month, so I see no future for any mag, Thrasher included. However, it will probably survive for long still, but become more advertorial as time progresses.
One thing that mags were and that would still be valuable today is moderators - there was a certain threshold to being featured, whereas everyone is now "self published". I guess print will live on as vinyl does in the music scene - a subculture that puts value in the physical media (however, most skateboarders are some of the cheapest mofos around).

Wow that insight was right on the money. Personally I've been struggling to cope with the role print currently plays in skateboarding—seems impossible to monetize anymore—you really helped put it in perspective.

as long as free skate mag is around i'm good

TWS did not go out of business, but a lot of people did get let go.

That Hugo cover was hot fire though
Dick Rizzo did same thing on switch at the same spot and nobody mention

No, he didn't.

if you're to believe this thomas barker guy, it would seem that no one was fired. instead, they quit upon learning that transworld got bought by american media.
thought this guy was perhaps a yokel, but he appears to have to some connections to the industry. his tweets also picked up some likes from other people in the industry, so maybe there's something to this.

I've only gotten my hands on one single issue in a long time, and I really think it's a great mag. It's not glossy anymore and is a lot shorter, but they really went in on beautiful high-res printing and really high-quality skate photography later and it's sort of a thing of beauty

If a skateboarding mag is owned by a creepy pornographer who accumulated a media empire of shit he didn't care about (other than the porn stuff) it was totally cool. If a skateboard mag is owned by a media conglomerate that runs a bunch of mags that put out garbage news that's often false but never retracts or apologies for being dishonest, that's cool. A skateboard mag gets bought out by some conglomerate that may have not posted the 100,000,000th fucking Trump story even though every other media outlet was reporting on it 24/7 as has been the case for years, holy shit, this is serious news and it should be the end of TWS!
I fucking HATE politics, but man, the President really does live rent-free in so many people's heads these days, it kind of makes me wonder how many people are going to lose their sanity once the 2020 elections come around. Boycott TWS because they've been phoning it in for the past half decade, I would get it, but this isn't any different than your favorite brands being part of some bullshit corpo garbage umbrella with something people could find a loose disagreement with. Pretty weak that people would want to see it buried for a lame reason than something that's actually viable. It's like saying that you're not gonna support your local shop because the landlord they lease from once voted for some guy you didn't like or supported something you disagreed with. Man, people got weak over time for handling anything like adults.

Or people are striving to be less complacent with where their support goes now. I wouldn't say that's a problem. Regardless, Transworld is dead as can be. I won't be supporting any new incarnation. Which will be easy because I haven't bought a Transworld in probably a decade.
Skate print media is pretty much dead, with the only interesting path I could see happening is more indie skate zines. That's something I'd be interested in. Unfortunately it's not quite like the Punk, HC, Metal scene where anyone can slap some xerox'd shit together. It'd have to be put out for the love it by people with connections to get legit information, photos, and pro features (at least for a zine that appeals to the skate community at large as opposed to pockets of local scenes). This avenue is pretty inexpensive, and shouldn't struggle to gain support from people who still care about the physical media. I guess as this idea develops I'm realizing that all I'm doing here is just suggesting someone make a new magazine which is pretty dumb, but uh, I dunno man. Small-scale skate zine that isn't wack? Someone could do it.

That's a bit of a pipe dream in the modern world. Anyone can and WILL be outraged if they look beyond the surface on pretty much everything they currently support if you are seeking such a reason. I just find the whole political thing pretty fucking stupid for a reason not to support it. Personally, I'm not buying TWS because they literally have phoned in everything for the past half decade, I just don't support lazy publications that turn every issue into a nearly-text-free photo issue as TWS has where after 5 minutes, I toss it into the recycle bin.

Everything has its return. One day, I'm sure there will be more indie shit once people get a bit burned out on the social media overload, which would be a nice thing. The state of current skateboard media can't sustain itself forever be it online or print, something's gonna give eventually, and I just hope it goes a bit more grassroots rather than ending up with Thrasher being bought by some mega-media conglomerate and getting even kookier than it has been the last few years. But, at least, I can spend an hour reading it, whereas you could fit all the TWS articles and interviews from each issue on a cocktail napkin and still have room left over.

I wish he got more shine on his skate career. His part in let’s live was way ahead of its time and one of my favorites . I’m gonna go watch now.
Edit: upon rewatch maybe not ahead of its time but definitely just has that pleasantly smooth classic style. And he made that Shove em 5050 on a rail look so easy and good . Beautiful . I’ve been enjoying his insta posts lately .

So no more online content either? Bummer. This leaves Thrasher left of the major mags, right?

The best point I've seen regarding why TWS and Thrasher were considered to be on a different level from the smaller mags is that they actually paid their staff. Paid writers, paid photogs, paid filmers, paid art dept, etc. If your "mag" doesn't pay the people whose work and time go into making your mag - you're definitely not on their level. I guess it's notable that TWS and Thrasher had staff photogs longer than Sports Illustrated did.
I think this is getting at the point of what bums me out the most about print skate media dying. I'm not ready for skate photography to go away. I don't think skaters will stop taking photos of skaters but at this point we're like 40 plus years into a medium. So it's a super mature genre but it's also kind of feeling like an endpoint. Less mags means less venues for photos and I think it's conceivable that skate photos will become a quaint and inessential niche market. I'm not looking forward to that.

such a bummer,
the early 90's issues were incredible & i still flick through reminiscing

Transworld had the best photo staff, and produced the best photo content from staff photographers for a long while. It seems now that most brands have a staff photographer. You'll always need shots for promo, packaging, websites and a bit of social media. I follow Zander Taketomo, who is the staff photographer for adidas and he's always going on trips and shooting. They even give him a budget for film, which seems surprising but obviously Adidas has deep pockets for that.
I will miss photo annuals though. I'm glad I've saved a pile of them.
-
The worst thing about print dying is that while the photo production has increased immensely, most photos will get buried in social media feeds or simply die as their websites are taken offline. Print, on the other hand, can live on thousands of shelves, storage boxes etc. Same goes for video.
-
RIP :'(
-
as a mag theyve fallen off really hard but having said that, it blows my mind that it wasnt making money and the print magazine is gone. really really really bummed its gone. i hope the website and the content stays up somehow or is getting archived somewhere by somebody. maybe wayback machine or something. pro skateboarding feels like its changing permanently to something else.
-
Guess it's thrasher or nothing, thanks TWS
-
I wonder if LurkNYC is still going to be making videos for them?
-
they did say they'll have limited edition print runs still. every other month or quarterly would still be enough time to put together a nice mag
-
Do magazines that are only published digitally work? Just curious because I have to admit I've fallen pretty far from being on the forefront with digitalization and latest technologies, and subscribing to a digital magazine has never even crossed my mind
-

They already were bimonthly. Maybe they’ll go to a bi-decade release schedule. Can’t wait for the Check Outs!

I like the part where they auto-renewed me in Jan and then send a postcard in March about how they stopped printing in Feb.

TEN stands for "The Experience Network" - you just didn't realize that was the experience they were referring to.
I think it's "Enthusiasts Network" as in enthusiastically sell to the highest bidder for parts.

Honestly if I'm using mags as TP I'd got for newer Trans World over Thrashers any day, they have that matte feeling.
This definitely sucks for skateboarding, and the employees too. Thanks for some great covers, amazing videos, and all the other content they put out that made me excited to go skate.

agreed. luckily this is an oral history, so we only have to suffer through his intro.
i loved transworld in the early 2000s. as a kid, i never realized how lucrative those 400-page issues must have been.
Dave Swift: I talked to one of the ad guys in 2002, and he said I think we’re averaging about $1,000,000 an issue in advertising. Imagine that: A 400-page magazine—probably the average ad page is about $3,500—and they’re running 60% ads, 40% editorial. It was generating a lot of money.

Oral history. That's just how it is after you get married, am I right?
