I'm a huge Mike V fan but he went through some huge cringeworthy phases over prior to his current incarnation, I think current Mike V is his most palatable version of himself in all honesty. Sure, he might seem overconfident at times when retelling his stories but he did contribute a shitload to "the culture" over the years.

I actually really like him in the man who sold the world. I love that doc. It’s kinda weird because now he is super mellow but back in the day he stepped on a lot of toes so I think that’s why he isn’t as accepted. I’m glad he’s still around as he is a nice guy.

I saw Mike V and the Rats perform at ASR one year. That was "interesting."
Mike V is certainly way off in left field at this point, but I can't deny the dude played a huge role in developing skateboarding into what it is today. Mike V and JT bum me out (for different reasons), but I can't deny they did some amazing things for skateboarding.

That's what Mike has done and it's been in the public eye since he was a kid. He was a pretty extreme guy so his phases have all been pretty full on but I can't and won't give him shit for that. Seems to me like he is doing it right now. Trying to be a good family man and ethical businessman.

Mike V is like a yin-yang, he's done some really cool stuff but he's also a mega kook.

Back sometime between 97-99, i watched him do his spoken word thing for about 5 minutes in the basement of a skate shop owner's house in New Brunswick. It was crowded and not too interesting. He had to have gone for over an hour.
Dude's stories on the nine club sounded rehearsed. A little overly sentimental/corny but not the worst.

World had some seriously on fire graphics in that period. It's real hard to pin down a top five, let alone the best. One thing in Mike Vs defence though is that the whole historical status of that deck is wrapped up together. The graphic and the shape and when it hit and who released it make it one of the most important decks in skateboarding. Of all the historically significant decks it probably does have the best graphics. I mean, no-one is gonna pick the G&S Warptail graphic over that!

One of my favourite boards ever was a Streetplant board. 9" pool shape, super mellow, 14.5"wb. I'd love to have another one. Sold out now. I've hit up Prof Schmidt asking if any other brands use that shape but no response.

They have one of those groups where I live that is like a street team or fan club for the board brand. They used to organize some meetups at parks around town, and you'd see like 15-20 dudes with full pads riding giant shaped boards carving up those 3ft bad boy bowl corners.
They were all pretty nice guys, but they are like...really into it.
Met Mike V one time at an event they did, he seemed OK. Didn't really say much.

I'm surprised Vallely agreed to do an interview with Big Brother after falling out w/Rocco. They were bound to bring up shit he probably wouldn't want to talk about and/or things that wouldn't make him look good. He had to know at least one skeleton was going to come crashing out of the closet during that interview since part of the magazine's purpose was to promote Rocco's companies.

I'm surprised Vallely agreed to do an interview with Big Brother after falling out w/Rocco. They were bound to bring up shit he probably wouldn't want to talk about and/or things that wouldn't make him look good. He had to know at least one skeleton was going to come crashing out of the closet during that interview since part of the magazine's purpose was to promote Rocco's companies.
Maybe he thought he could explain most of them away? Like, when he tries to explain away choking Jeremy Klien.

It’s hard to remember because I was young and it was so shitty. The first of very few demos in my area. I was really young and because it was just Mike V doing weird handstands and shit it wasn’t very memorable. I got something in a product toss I think. God I wish I could remember what it was but I think it was pretty lame and a dumb brand on top. I think my friend got a no name slick board.
The most memorable thing was the quarter pipe falling. It was a few people on it and they all got smoked. It fell completely on its back. My re-creation is in the middle of that devastating event.

Vallely's old car came up recently at a Barrett-Jackson auction as a real Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am (probably spec'd from the factory, not an actual prop from the movie). The front plate is actually the Georgia State flag as the was the car from the movie. It was likely still their state flag when he bought the car (it was used until 2001 and is now superseded by an actual Confederate flag--the "stars and bars"). Still, I would have replaced it with a rainbow confederate flag.
