Title: Kicked out of the park because it was a girls only session
Post by: bigrigbutters on September 06, 2019, 07:56:07 AM
I flew back to my hometown on Monday and was itching to go to the local park I grew up skating. Rolled up there yesterday, got told that from now onward every second Thursday of the month is a girls skate only day & that I had to leave.

Unfortunately got into an argument with a load of people there and ended up just skating the car park with the other dudes that were turned away. The people organizing it said that female skaters often get intimidated by guys skating the park, which I suppose I can't relate to being male myself. I've never witnessed any hostility towards female skaters at that (or any) park, but then again this is just my perspective.

Trying to work out whether or not my annoyance was justified? or am I overreacting

Its a privately funded park (however its unsupervised, free to enter and open 24/7) so its entirely legit for them to establish rules like this, but this a park I spent virtually every day of my youth in and I'm now finding myself being turfed out due to my gender. I suppose it pissed me off because I'm used to being able to roll up to the park whenever I please.

you weren't allowed to skate at a girls only session because you're not a girl? no, your annoyance is not justified in the slightest. do some basic research on feminism and you might understand what happened today and why you look like such a clown right now

You poor, oppressed man. How awful it is to go through life as a second-class citizen. Having to deal with such indignanties just because of your gender! Smash the matriarchy!

And maybe one day, your grandsons will experience what it’s like to go to the park without feeling judged because of their genitals. And maybe have a session of just guys! We can dream, right?

Edit- I want to apologize for the snark, OP. You didn’t seem to be complaining badly, and I don’t want to over exaggerating your position. This is pretty much a response I want to tell most dudes that get to gently feel discrimination JUST ONCE, discrimination that others have to deal with daily, and they make a big deal out of being victimized.

If it were me, I'd just go skate somewhere else without even thinking about it but it does seem like it would be more beneficial if they billed it as a Girls skate day, open to all girls and supportive guys.

Blocking yourself off from the guys does nothing to help you feel included in the overall community.  Teaching the guys why skateboarding is all inclusive, regardless of gender benefits everyone involved.

Have the day, make it focused on girls while showing the guys why this matters and you'll achieve a lot more

Women want equality but they actually want special treatment, in my life I’ve learned that it’s never enough for women so they will probably want their own women only skateparks soon.
Get used to it, cut off your balls like every man does after they turn 30.
Men invent everything and women don’t want anything to do with it until years later when they realize they aren’t being included same with lots of races.
Hey make up your own shit!!!!
The problem with equality rights is things are equal now, you can make up your own sport by cutting a scooter in half and glueing the parts to your boots, any women or man could do this right now and nobody would care. Free world free market.
In 4 years skate wave will be over and you’ll be able to buy all their shorty completes on craigslist

he said it’s a privately funded park, they could call the cops and have you trespassed if they don’t want you there. I have never really seen girls get messed with at a skatepark, i have neices that are learning how to skate and if anything dudes are psyched on them and look out for them

Honestly all y’all sound dumb

You got the foos that feel entitled and the foos white knighting

All y’all dumb.

It’s like when a kid closes a park for a bday or it’s closed for a target ad. Or even events with kids with disabilities.  Especially if it was a privately funded park.

Then for y’all white knighting , idk.

Just to play devils avacado , I’ve seen events like this but more open. Mostly lgbt sessions. But it doesn’t mean they want to turn people away, as it’s an opportunity for people who skate there normally to show they support thems movement and wants to show they is down to skate with you regardless of whatever.

Lastly I can’t imagine this was a whole day thing , if it was that’s a gnarly session they were having. That’s tight

There was a girls session at my local mini one night, every other week... dudes were allowed but there was an understanding that it was girls night thing. Of the ones I attended, everyone was cool.. the vibe was awesome and nobody was intimidated or butt-hurt. Some people ripped, some people slammed, some people cooked on the grill, some people got high and or drunk. Everybody seemed to have a good time. The end.

Just make sure you skate the adjoining parking lot as a passive aggressive form of protest. it will help you heal.

I guess I’m in the minority at least in those giving their opinion but this shit is fucking stupid. If I drove to the skatepark and this shit was said I would be polite but not leave. I don’t get to skate a skatepark often and wouldn’t drive home if I drove the 25 minutes it personally takes me to get to the nearest decent one. Maybe it’s just me. I grew up with all sisters and a single mom. I’m not even close to being a misogynist. Me and my older sister used to skate together when I was first starting, I recently got my younger sister into skating, and even my girlfriend started skating with me, eating shit and getting back up. When I was in high school my friends girlfriend who was pretty butch skated with us no issue. This shit is dumb pure and simple. If the scooter kids can hang the girls should be able to. I never hear someone talking shit for being a girl.

I back the idea of a girls night. It is pretty obvious that women have been underrepresented in skateboarding, skateboarding is an intimidating space to enter, and there a fair amount of dudes who are still dicks about the girls invading their space. A night where they can skate, film, shoot photos, etc. without having to deal without being judged by the guys is just fine by me.

Not everyone gets judged equally and it makes sense some girls would be worried about the dudes judging them unfairly.

Finally, I always get a good laugh when someone says, "Oh skateboarding is so welcoming. There is no reason for anyone to be intimidated." Entering skateboarding and trying to get a foothold in the subculture was a brutal experience for me. It took years until I could finally enter the local core shop and not feel like a piece of shit. I felt like a complete outsider for years and I had the benefit of not having any physical attributes that set me apart from the "norm."

I never hear someone talking shit for being a girl.
I'm surprised you haven't heard any of this (but it might just mean you skate with a decent group of people).

I was at the local core shop the other day and the owner was telling me how bummed he was on girls getting sponsored because they can't jump down as many stairs as the dudes. I didn't know what to say and I left pretty bummed.

I guess it would depend on a lot. All our parks are open outdoor ones. What time are they skating until? Is there a set time that girls night ends? Could I skate and help out? Actually I might not stay if I’m showing up with a big group. I don’t want to take a stand and then be responsible for a bunch of dummies.

Post by: Merganser on September 06, 2019, 10:19:56 AM
I’m not a fan of the “no boys allowed” girls’ sessions. Maybe it’s sour grapes on my part because these didn’t exist when I started skating 20 years ago. I had to learn alone in parking lots, then at 7am at the park before anyone else showed up and finally I had to endure skating with boys at the park as the only girl and I was shitty at skating on top of it.

But I also suspect my experience was pretty similar to most of my peers. Sure it was lonely at first and I did get some bullying/heckling but overall there were more people who were cool to me than not.

It feels like these women want to mitigate the awkward initiation phase of skating by creating a male-excluding safe space. Even without intimidating boys around I don’t think it’s possible. Skating is hard. You will look stupid on board for awhile before you get it. You will get hurt. You won’t go pro. No one outside of skating will give a shit about your skating so you won’t get that all important validation that all the kids are talking about these days. No athletic scholarships for skateboarding either. And the older you get the more ridiculous your peers find you for continuing to skate. Having a trial by fire phase at the outset is fair warning about what’s to come. If looking stupid in front of boys is enough to scare you away from skating it’s probably not the hobby for you. Because skateboarding absolutely requires that you cultivate some level of not giving a fuck.

I am totally for female meet ups that don’t involve kicking out males. I’ve participated in plenty. All-women — or even majority women sessions feel amazing! It’s more relaxed and friendly. But they should happen organically. You don’t need to vibe out all guys on account of their gender. And if a dude is being shitty—snaking the girls is a common one— telling the dude to knock it off is great practice for asserting yourself.

I am for creating women’s skate culture. I’m part of it, most all my skate friends are other women. I am NOT for bubble wrapped safe spaces that inhibit one’s ability to develop resilience and not-giving-a-fuck attitude that’s necessary for skateboarding.

Realize this isn’t sympathetic to the original post. Sorry you couldn’t skate when you wanted. I’m sorry that what should have been a good positive event has ended up sowing resentment by banning males.  but it also seems like you were resilient enough to have fun elsewhere. I’d like to see the next generation of female skaters have that some resilience. And I just came across an opportunity to spout off here. Okay rant done.

I can get behind this. Otherwise, I'd be happy to go another day if it meant some girls can enjoy themselves in peace.

I guess I’m in the minority at least in those giving their opinion but this shit is fucking stupid.

i still am not sure whether or not this is a bait thread  but i guess im taking it...

A) you're not in the minority.   most people would be bummed if they came back home and went to the unsupervised park thats open 24/7 (which tells me that its at least in part public), and denied entry to a place where they spent their most awkward and insecure years feeling not only comfortable, but free and included.  the shift from the expectation on the skate/drive/walk/bike whatever on the way there to the reality at the door would be pretty off putting. it would be weird to not feel bummed on it.  it is possible to be happy for other people while still being bummed for yourself.

B) unless its is a private park on private land, that's owned and operated by private people, it is "fucking stupid" to shut down a skate park for one group so it can be "more" open for another.  i'm not against whatever-only events, i'm against whatever-only events in shared spaces. if i went to a public park in my hometown and someone told me it was closed to me for a nonessential reason (essential being repairs, crime in progress, make-a-wish, permitted private event) i would be pretty bullshit.

C) it easy to feel unsympathetic to OP- but if it was 9 y/o kid who finally got their parent to drive them 25 min to the "good" skatepark so they could skate, and the parent could spend time just watching their kid have fun i suspect some of you would have a different reaction.

“We cannot think of uniting with others, until after we have first united among ourselves.”

Basically, women skaters deserve the right to build up their scene for themselves. Its not their responsibility to teach men about inclusion and it’s not our responsibility to take over their scene to help them feel included. Men need to educate each other on why it’s important and then after all that’s been sorted out things can be different.

Are you implying that people have different reactions to different situations? Stop making false equivalencies.

Many public parks also have beginner sessions or little kid sessions. Do you also get angry at those?

The fact of the matter is that skateparks (and many of the people who frequent them) are intimidating. Some people might show up at a park on a random day and just never skate because they don't feel confident enough or are afraid of doing something that might get them embarrassed--like push mongo, wear the wrong shoes, or grind with both of their trucks.

There is a tremendous amount of hypocrisy in skateboarding, and many of the same people who claim it's for everyone (with their words) will then try to vibe others out (with their actions). I'm a big fan of those that make sure the park locals let the timid ones have a run. Whether they are timid because they are inexperienced, small, young, or a regularly-maligned gender shouldn't matter (and if you don't think female skateboarders are regularly maligned in the skate community, you aren't paying attention).

My 7yo daughter regularly goes to parks with me and she will often refuse to skate, even though I am there. But when we have the park to ourselves, she has a great time. There is a lot that goes on inside each person's head, and their reasons for feeling intimidated are their own.

my statement is not a false equivalency.  its a reasonably plausible outcome of a different variable in the same stimulus (males are excluded from the only good skate park in a 25 min radius, nine year olds can be male,  a 9 year old can be exuded). "false equivalency"  would be saying this is no different than a hospital excluding male patients.  if anything its either a cherry picking, or appeal to emotion fallacy

Don't kid yourself, the presence of a 9 y/o kid isn't intimidating to women like compared to a grown man's. I kinda doubt that some kid who just happened to show up on that specific day would get excluded from being able to skate, and if that were/is the case then of course most people would look at the situation differently. The only thing I can contend on OPs behalf is that it might've been helpful to try to get the word out beforehand so everyone can plan accordingly, but even then it's hard to get word to everyone in a large dispersed community.

Right! I feel intimidated and uncomfortable  around white people because I never know when one of y’all will shoot up a school or a park. So can we get some sessions with NO WHITE SKATERS.

I recently went to skate my local park and it was closed off for the next 4 hours for Summer skateboarding lessons (for young skaters only). I was annoyed, but it was kind of a blessing because I just went cruising around instead; I ended up reconnecting somewhat with my inner child (barf, I know right?) and why I started skating in the first place.

Basically, the skatepark is a prison. Those bitches did you a favor.

^This is one of the best, no BS takes on the whole thing. Thanks.

Who are these women to tell you what you can't identify as?  They say gender is fluid now, so if you wanna be a girl for a day and join in, they don't have any right to tell you otherwise. Fair is fair.

Your frustration is totally justified.

Free entry for women on 'ladies nights' is cool, but if they want a session to themselves they can go hit the streets.

I'd even encourage free food, product, or lessons, but you don't create equality by disadvantaging the opposite sex, that's called sexism and it's fucking ridiculous that people don't see it.

I traveled to LA from Australia years ago and when i got to Venice beach the skatepark was closed to film a Shaun White commercial. I left disappointed with an even deeper hatred for Shaun White.

Taking a skatepark away from boys only encourages animosity towards the girls, it's fucking dumb.

I grew up skating in the 90s where skateparks were intimidating for everyone, and overcoming that awkward nervousness is an important part of building the resilience in any young skater whether you're a girl, boy, or miscellaneous

You are complaining about a private event taking place on private property. It's a skatepark, who cares.

If you want to do something where you get to make up the rules, pick a less popular form of entertainment or go skate a grocery store parking lot.

Really?

Women and men are socialized differently. Women (through socialization) tend to form groups and do things together.

Men are generally taught to ‘be tough, be independent’.

So yeah, women probably won’t feel comfortable going the lone wolf route that most of us took when we were young. They are making a space that works for them.

Faulting them for taking a creating a different  approach that shows that we as dudes are not taught to understand a female POV, and we expect them to act exactly like we do.

By the way, that socialization difference creates big differences in outcomes as we get older, and men tend to suffer more from loneliness in their old age.

Skateboarding is supposed to be fun. If leveling up is your thing it’s better to skate with positive people. If I wanted hazing I would have joined the football team. Anyway leave these women be, if they’re uncomfortable skating around dudes maybe ask them why.

Nah, I only identify as a woman when I want to pretend I'm having my period.  It gives me the ability to justify being short with everyone around me when I just tell them I'm on the rag, then, they magically clear a path and give me leeway to be a total cunt for a few days.

Twice a month would be excessive and abusing my gender fluidity.

It sucks that you got kicked out but we have to let the women have their time it’s only fair there are lots of men that don't respect what they are trying to do. I’m not saying that’s you but you are being roped into that group and I hope that changes soon and we can all skate together with all genders and races and we all just live in one space and appreciate each other. This happened to me and some friends too. It was an indoor park and it was raining out so we headed there after work to get a little roll in but we’re turned away because of girls night. It was a little annoying because It’s harder to get out to skate due to work and family but I understand why. My friend made a massive argument out of it which was pretty embarrassing...on the other side it’s kind of weird because we would always include and make an effort to talk to girl skaters because it’s cool to see them out there getting into it. I think they don’t understand that every skater feels intimidated when they are learning and there is someone at the park shredding, I can’t tell you how many sessions I just sat and watched as a youngster because I was intimidated.

I wasn’t allowed in the skatepark by locals til I could
-Ollie a board
-fs 180
-bs 180
-pop shuv
-land 1 kickflip in 20 tries
-slappy noseslide
And I had to drop in on the 6ft quarter first thing, roll away before I could skate anything else
This was in New Jersey in 1995
It was a private park and had lots of good skaters, I was pissed but I never liked skateparks.
Locals also frowned upon, any type of mongo pushing and they had an order in which you could learn tricks. Like you had to be able to 180 every direction every stance before you could try a 360 flip. Flailing the board around on a Hail Mary trick would get your board thrown and you’d have to leave to spot or park.

Have you never been denied visiting a privately-owned owned space because it's temporarily occupied by a group of people from which you are excluded? Do you show up at banquet halls and cause a scene because there's a wedding reception and you just want to dance? Do you show up at baseball diamonds and have a little crisis because this was your baseball diamond ever since you were young and now there's a group of toddlers playing t-ball? Do you scurry off to a message board to complain that a pub is hosting a Christmas party and now you can't order a beer? Of course you don't. But girls skateboarding without you... all hands on deck! Figure your shit out.

Assuming your edgelord shtick is grounded in some real woman-hating, it’s hilarious that you take offense to this.

Because it’s dudes with attitudes like yours that makes girls-only nights a necessity

With all the male shaming that goes on in the leftist media and hollywood, i believe every female should be forced to recognize they cant keep up with the boys in their chosen sport because they are females.

If there wasnt a war against white guys going on everywhere these days i wouldnt care as much about discriminating agains guys at a skatepark.

If guys are supposed to be told their natural horseplaying behavior is degenerate and inferior to the natural behavior of girls, then its only fair to tell girls that their natural skateboarding ability is degenerate and inferior to boys.

I don’t know if this is a girl or a guy posting this, but thank god they respected skateboarding enough to make sure no one was pushing mongo.

And yea you probably shouldn’t be trying treflips if you can’t do all the 180’s. So many kids today have terrible style and can barely pump because they incessantly try to fling their board out constantly.

I was skating a park recently and this kid was trying switch heels, but he couldn’t even Ollie the hip. You gotta learn the basics first to look good

If it was a contest would you be that guy who just skates anyways?  Would that have been a better situation?

No one is saying girls should only skate with girls....same as skating shouldn't always be about contests..or always a big demo....but every now and then.....there is value in these events....

Skateparks are becoming much like baseball diamonds and basketball courts. It’s a public space that can be commandeered for city or private events on a whim. It’s less of a lawless space now.
If I choose to go there I expect it to be overrun and full of skaters and randoms. Around here we have multiple non profits who frequently run camps so I am used to showing up and not being able to use the facility at my leisure.
And as a member of a non marginalized group (Caucasian male) getting into skating was easy, minimal judgement from my peers and casually integrated into a social dynamic. I would imagine as a younger female it would be pretty tough to feel at ease with experienced skaters much bigger and older than me flying around. I respect the limited use at times, it’s not frequent enough to really impact my skating and with a car I can always find another spot to skate. I’m privileged to have an abundance of skateparks near me and always remember it’s a space that doesn’t belong to me and often has way too much going on so it’s not always my first choice.

Seems to me like the ideology of feminism is we want equality but only the positive equality and none of the shitty parts of being a man. equality also includes parts we don't like to admit such as..... you are too feminine or sack up or man up or you are a guy get over it. Pretty sure if someone slammed and said are you okay? and they continued to complain about how it sucks then the GET OVER IT wouldn't go over too well.

Sure skate night with the ladies would be sick however to exclude others (men) from being supportive is downright stupid.  We've moved along ways from segregating water fountains/bathrooms seems like this is on the same level trying to mix politics gender with equal free space.

Get over it ladies we do all the hard work just so you can complain.

That someone being myself yes I find it a subversive way of discrimination with noble intentions. I am not offended that women want their own space, I would assume if you want equality you'd also take the bad with the good. Can't have both that's just delusional, we hear you on respecting each other's space but that doesn't mean I have to.

Get over it ladies we do all the hard work just so you can complain.

You are halfway there with your reasoning.

You are making the presumption that women want to basically be men.
Like there is a ‘level’ of privilege, and men sit on a higher tier, and women want to raise to that.

In which case another way we could achieve equality is ‘lower’ men to the ‘women’s’ tier. I’m sure there aren’t many guys who are keen on that kind of equality.

One of the more profound feminist thinkers, Bell Hooks, doesn’t agree with equality being so  simplistic. She also looked deeply into how patriarchy negativity impacts men as well, from emotionally stunting us to sacrificing us in the idea of what it means ‘to be s man’.

If you’d like a more nuanced idea of feminist theory, try ‘The Will to Change’ written for a male audience.

As for female-only spaces, judging by some of the reactions in this thread, I can totally understand why ladies might not want to deal with guys every time they skate.

It’s not like guys have to deal with anything comparable (unless on an individual basis you were prejudiced against).

Yes, I agree about different socialization. I do endorse ladies’ nights for that reason and I’ve participated in plenty. I just don’t support shutting off a public park to males in order to do it.

I understand this is a grey area because the park in question is not technically public but generally operates like a public park?? OK, if it’s private it can be booked for a party, a scooter contest, a music video shoot or whatever just as easily as a girl’s only session and that’s just a material fact about private venues. Yet the discussion seems to revolve around public parks and whether having a female-only session is acceptable. I’m arguing for female meet-ups at public parks that do not require kicking out males. Won’t be a girl’s only session, but will be a “more girls than usual” session and in my experience that’s optimal.

About 10 years ago I was confronted by some male friends about a “girl’s only” session that happened at the skatepark in which a female skate advocacy organization reserved a public park for a Sunday afternoon and told all the men they had to leave for two hours. Though I wasn’t involved with this group the guys wanted an explanation from me and to make the case that they weren’t sexist and would’ve welcomed the girl’s to skate WITH them. So then there was resentment towards that organization and girls’ sessions in general that could’ve been avoided.

There are a number of these organizations now. Some have employees and non-profit tax status. They do a lot of good work. But they also have to have some income to keep their lights on. They do this by offering skate lessons and camps— all well and good. They also do this by soliciting donations. To get donations they need to make a case that girl’s skateboarding is a feminist cause and that there are active forces of patriarchy that are working against skater girl’s making their organization NECESSARY. Not saying they are completely wrong, but there does seem to be a financial incentive to exaggerate how bad sexism and shared sessions with boys is for girls.

Think about it like this: if your gifting money to a non profit, what cause seems more worthy: getting more girls into a male dominated hobby or fighting back against a stifling, aggressively sexist culture that simply won’t let girl’s skate unless the males can be exorcised from the park?

These orgs aren’t bad. They are trying to stay afloat and it’s good that they’re supporting female skating. But much like the sad animal Sarah Mcglauflan ASPCA ads are a bit manipulative, the conversation gets skewed due to the financial interests of these orgs. And their interests don’t exactly line up with the individual skater girl. It’s in her interest to meet other girls and make friends skating, but also to confront challenging and uncomfortable situations while learning to skate.

This for real? Lol whack as fuck.

[close]

I get that and lowering myself worth to be equal is definitely not an option. I agree with having safe spaces and equal contribution from both genders, however I don't believe it's fair they can choose the best parts of being masculine or being a man.

I wish I could be equally effeminate and masculine but I don't as I have my own preconceived notions to uphold with business partners and staff.

These issues seem like 1st world problems and to be fair those that have endured worse should be acknowledged more then some petty ass girls skate night,

War, racism, deportation, sex trafficking, police shootings, discrimination for being black or brown and have either ICE or a cop merc you.

Considering all these things OP you should think outside of your own selfish ass, there's alot worse things that could be happening to you and your family, instead you waste your time pissing and moaning on SLAP of all places.......

I'm all for having a girl's skate night at the skatepark. If it truly makes women feel more comfortable and at ease.

One of my best friends is non-binary and shreds, they associate as neither gender, but they were biologically born as a man. If you let them skate then cool, but if you said no you can't skate because you have a male body or you were biologically born as a man—then I'm going to say Fuck Off

Agree 100%, as a female. I skated mostly late 90s to mid 2000s.. I've had some situations with guys at my locals but the guys I skated with took care of it. Usually the ones that cause the issues are just shitty douchebags that aren't even that good so it was always fun to do the trick they're trying so hard at right next to them. There are so many females in skating now that hopefully the discrimination floods out but being new to skating can be intimidating, especially as a female, so I don't mind the girls day/night at parks every now and then.

One of the situations I recall was when I was 18 and this guy in the bowl kept insisting that frontside indys were a thing and I politely told him no. He had to be in his 30s and he shoved me hard in the railing when I told him again he was wrong haha. ..but that could've happened to a guy too.  The dude was kicked out of the park.
The other situations were sexual jokes like "hey girl, wanna do a lipslide". Other than that.. nothing too bad.. the guys I skated with were always looking out.

if its a private space then you cant bitch about any private sessions going down ever. However if its a public space did they get a permit to have an exclusive event? The taxes you and everyone else pay to maintain your public space means everyone should have access to use the space unless a special permit was issued. Have your girls only event, children only camp, shredders only contest, but get a permit or Im skating what I paid taxes for. when I walk up and you're telling me to leave because of a private event you better show me some paperwork granting exclusivity for that time period or you can suck a fart directly out of my ass.

Also how big of creeps are dudes being to where the ladies feel the need to isolate themselves from other skaters?

If there's other parks or decent spots nearby but you're whining 'cause you want to skate THAT one right NOW, then I think you're in the wrong.

But if it's the only spot in skating distance and the girls have claimed it for a day just so the don't end up feeling any difficult emotions, then I reckon that's pretty selfish of them.

There's a growing girl skater scene in my hometown. On the whole, they're fairly well-integrated with the dudes. A few of the girls have talked to me about feeling nervous or stared at when they skate. They're all kind of beginners, and don't seem to realise that most dudes go through the same thing.

They have girl's nights at one of the indoor parks here like once a fortnight. I think it's just easier to explain by saying that we intimidate them, not that they just have more fun without us around. The male ego prefers dominance over rejection. Kind of nice of them, really.

That said, the way some of these girls talk about each other is gnarley. Can't imagine the kind of vibing that goes down on girl's night.

Being mildly annoyed would seem normal in this situation, but letting it get to the point of arguing with a group of people over it seems a bit much.  Cant say whether you overreacted or not, since arguments are 2 sided, but I think the gentlemanly thing to do would have been to say "okay, very well then, Ill be on my way", the moment they informed you the park was closed for a private event.  All legalities aside, It shouldn't really matter to you WHY the park was closed.  You ultimately did the right thing by respecting their wishes and leaving, but arguing with them lowered you stature as a gentleman, and you NEVER let anyone put you in a position to do that.  While I understand WHY these girls think they need an exclusive night for themselves, I disagree and think they went a bit far kicking dudes out.  Ladies, if you want to have an all-girl, estrogen fueled skate extravaganza, every single night of the week, GREAT!  Please do.
Trust me, the dudes will back this fully, but once you start tossing dudes out of the sesh, it becomes counterproductive to your cause.  You lower your stature as ladies and give off the appearance that you can't handle real life situations.   You want a certain level of comfort before entering the wild world of skateboarding?  I get it.  It makes sense, I guess.  It's just so fucking WEAK.  Sheltering yourself from the harsh realities of skatepark life early on can only set you up for rude awakenings down the line.  Its unnatural.  And just know this, one of the coolest things to see at a skatepark these days is a lady in the lineup, ripping right along side the fellas.

Times are changing guys, and skateboarding, like many things in life are becoming wussified to accommodate all these fragile little butterflies out there.  Whatever, in this case, I say give it to them.  I may not agree with their approach, but at the end of the day, more females in skateboarding is a great thing.  How they get here is less important than them making it, IMO.  With that said, let's give these ladies a break, cause it all boils down to a little respect and compassion for your fellow human being, on and off the board.

Y'all really getting butthurt that ladies are invading your safe space for a day and forcing you to actually go street skating? Come the fuck on. Stop acting like braindead edgelords whenever you see a chick at the park and she might stick around to skate when you are there instead of being so afraid to be around people like you that she only attends a special girls only event.

Man up and stop behaving like gatekeeping punkass babies and women will skate with you and get better at skating faster. Then you can quit crying about how they're bad at skating and somehow don't deserve attention because they can't hang with GT and Milton Martinez or whatever. They probably won't ever skate at the same level. Who cares? Skating ain't about video parts and street league checks, it's about riding around on your fucking skateboard and appreciating that others also enjoy doing so. It's not like you're obligated to watch a girl's part or a girl skate contest. If you don't care for it, don't watch.

And if they still never want to skate around dudes, who cares? Guys almost always run the skatepark and make it a male dominated space by default. Skating should be for everyone and why not give them a chance to utilize the space once in a while? It isn't going to become a girls only skatepark. You can go back tomorrow.

this is the most annoying part about this argument whenever this thread pops up once a month. its something that you only hear from an 18-25 year old KIDS that have probably never even had to buy their own groceries.  after having a full time and then some job, owning and keeping up with a house and having a family, the last thing someone that's trying to skate a park in their non existent free time is time to be running around down town skating and getting kicked out of spots.  sometimes it is just easier to go to a skatepark

also the irony of you saying "man up" in this conversation

Go back the next day. Or cry about it on slap. Whatever.

Skateparks are fine but if they're a bust I go skate elsewhere. I'd rather skate around Brooklyn, Manhattan, or even back in my own small town than feel the need to bitch about something like this on Slap. You've gotta buy groceries and take care of your house? Boofucking-hoo so does everyone else.

Try working 7 12s for five months straight. When I didn't have the time to get to a skate park or a bust-free spot I'd just bring my deck to work and skate the banks over by the loading docks during lunch. If that wasn't enough for me I'd just wake up earlier and go to the skatepark when it's empty.

You guys relativizing the absurd. Skateboarding is prohibited in 90% of the city.  There are  few places to skate in some cities. This absurd happens when girls who are skateboarders want exclusivity. Imagine working all day, then skating stilly in only place that you are allowed, but this spot is closed to the privileged girls. Plurality  not exclusivity is the right word today.

Props to Foucault.

Words of a man who will be divorced a few years after claiming “happy wife, happy life”

Yeah, you might wanna double check your math on that one, bud.  Been married to the same woman for well over a decade now, if you care to know the truth.  I am curious how you arrived at that conclusion and how you could be so far off base, though.  Are you married?  I find it interesting that you toss "happy wife, happy life" out there like it's a bad thing.  Unless I misunderstood you.  Would you be a sport and elaborate a little more for us?

I understand and accept that snark takes priority over facts here on SLAP, but before you make another smart-ass remark, consider this.

"Happy wife, happy life" can be interpreted many different ways.  And people tend to project their own world view into situations and essentially "see what they want to see".

If you interpret that phrase as anything other than "I'm secure enough within my manhood, to concede smaller battles in order to win the war", then I'm afraid we don't see eye to eye.

Dont get me wrong, there are definitely, soft, pussy-whipped, spineless, ball-less, beta males out there living to suplicate their women, saying that shit too.  They accept that she doesn't respect him, won't stay loyal, and doesn't really love him, but uses him for material gain, while she gets dick from the Alpha in her life.  That's a lifestyle they've chosen or perhaps they've yet to figure out.

For most of us married men, we walk a fine line when it comes to conflict resolution with our ladies.  We have to decide in a given moment whether it is more advantageous to be "right" or be "happy".  When it really matters, like in matters of respect and loyalty, I say be "right" ALL the time.  When it's less significant, and the severity of the worst possible outcome is trivial, it often makes more sense to stand down and concede victory in order to keep the peace.  In other words, it's not always worth it to hurt someone's feelings, or upset them, just to make whatever point you're trying to make to win the argument.  Although sometimes it is absolutely necessary.  It's the emotional equivalent of squaring up with someone and deciding whether it is necessary to fight or walk away.
Being a man is being able to distinguish in the heat of the moment, which course of action to take.  Read Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, where he talks about emotional credits and debits, it's quite interesting.

As it all relates to the situation at hand, I think it is best summarized by Gloria, in the film "White Men Cant Jump":

Just pretend you can't  hear them and keep skating; there is no need to leave or argue.

This guy has the right idea. Women LOVE the silent treatment.

Yeah, and then pretend you're also blind and can't see the angry mob forming around you.

I didn't say I was scared "bruh".  I said the mob forming around the purported blind man would be angry.  Nothing more.  I wouldn't even be the blind guy in this scenario anyways.  Pay attention and stop projecting.

Nobody is intimidating women at the park, they are intimidating themselves by misjudging the situation. Everone just wants to shred and get good nobody got time to shit on someone.

Correct.

Usually, the park is naturally intimidating to people who are new to the game, doesn’t mean shit whether you’re a guy or girl, if you’re the kind to be self-conscious you’re gonna get self-conscious in that scenario skating with a bunch of people while still trying to build basic skills.  The implication it’s somehow different for girls is fucking dumb, I got vibed hard for being a weird greasy fat kid who skated in my early days by locals at numerous parks, but Jesus, it didn’t make me swear off going to the parks, it made me want to get better and improved my resolve to not let every asshole’s opinion ruin my fucking fun.  Girls should be able to do the same...unless...they aren’t actually capable of it (yes, that’s bait, so the shining armor guys can simmer down before you start up with any feminist lecturing).

We’ve had nothing but GIRL POWERRRR shouted from every rooftop the last half-decade, and yet, girls still feel they need their own safe space even though there’s no day set aside for shy guys, kooks and other misfits who would like a similar day of their own to skate without judgment. If girl power is so real, and girls can do anything they set their minds to, wouldn’t it make sense to cut the whole thing of expecting to be treated differently like they’re gonna break if everything isn’t perfect for them?  Who the fuck shows their power and equality by regularly insisting they need special treatment?  It boggles my mind.

Seems to me this kind of thing isn’t helping the whole cause of proving that we’re supposed to be equal, instead, it makes me wonder why many ladies still can’t hang with the pack and go though the rituals the guys do, and only feel like they can show up if you exclude everyone else so that they never have to deal with the real world.  Of course, many are proving themselves more than adequately, but those who want their hugbox of no dudes allowed are the kind who will probably all quit skating soon enough, and frankly, that’s probably a good thing.

its crazy that you find time to do that while working 7 12s

A sure sign of a well adjusted person who can prioritise and make good decisions is working 80+ hours a week for months at a time and looking down on others who don't

I've read this thread like twice over and all I can say is, I get the point of a "ladies' night" but you would have to show me paperwork from the city/county saying the park was shut down. I don't give a single fuck about what you're TRYING to do, I pay taxes. You're keeping me from skating NOTHING. I can't think of any way to isolate yourself from the greater skate scene by essentially carving out a time that nobody else can sesh a park. Nobody that was a regular at a park would want to be part of the element that's keeping fellow skaters out, even for just one night.
