Edit: and on this subject... what does redbull (or any other energy drink brand) actually take away from core brands staying around? Like they don't make any products that move in on any skate-related markets right? They don't make shoes, decks, trucks, wheels, bearings, etc. They just pay people to wear hats and shirts, and sponsor events related to skating. Yeah they're cashing in but so are the people who wear their hats and are also sponsored on "core" brands. I really don't see the harm, other than the influence it may have on people to possibly develop an unhealthy habit by drinking energy drinks... which yeah, it's not great, but hey, it's better than skaters wearing marlboro hats I guess. haha

I used to work as a bartender for a good chuck of my adult life and I would always steal the Red Bulls for myself because I'm not paying $3 for a can. I convinced our GM that everyone kept asking me for the sugar free ones, which no one was really, but those are my favorite and I wanted them.

They're not even trying to make it look like something people would wear. Only purpose is to best take advantage of the ad space that is your head

By accident (really) I stumbled upon a Red Bull crew filming last Summer and they certainly don't cut down on production costs.
For one lousy wakeboarder they had two dudes on sup boards filming in the water, 3 dudes on land, 2 drones and 2 photogs. Including producers, drivers etc. about 12 people in total for just one trick. That was just a local German production.

If you feel this way, then why doesn’t it bother you that people wear swoosh or stripe hats? I’m sure there are way more skaters who wear that corny as fucking swoosh wherever they go. Personally I always liked the three stripes, but the swoosh is the gods honest most oversaturated logo in history. If my sponsors were red bull and nike, and they both demanded I wear a hat, I’m fuckin with Red Bull hat anyday. Personally to me the thing that’s annoying about the hats is the fact they are primary colors and just clash with most casual skater outfits. at least with the swoosh they use almost any color imaginable and can fit their outfit to match the hat pretty damn well even if the logo is more oversaturated then Red Bull.

I just watched it. It's not amazing, but it's not terrible. I've spent 20 minutes watching worse things. Starts with a team montage that ends with Sheckler doing a gnarly tail drop in the middle of a highway. Then it goes Foy, Zion, then Milder. They all skate pretty much they way you'd expect. I think the video would have been better served by focusing on three dudes that are a bit more diverse in their spot choices. All three parts a really heavy on long rail skating. That being said, they all did some gnarly stuff. Milder's ender has got to be up there on the list of the more fucked up 5050s of all time, but will likely be forgotten because it was done by Alex Milder in a Red Bull video.

Otherwise, the video was OK, I guess. It should be interesting to see how it fares since it looks like Red Bull is pushing this themselves with no help from Thrasher, Transworld, etc. I personally believe it's time for skate companies to reclaim ownership of their video offerings from the weird monopoly Thrasher has on online content, so kudos to Red Bull for that.
Lastly, Midler's last minute of footage is gasp-inducing.

Don't care what anybody says, Midler is really fun to watch. He's fucked up good and it looks like he has to actually work for his tricks. Loved the super long front crook and barley grind. That last trick was incredible, why weren't there more angles for that one?

Seriously, it's just another sponsor (and one that isn't putting a skate brand out of business). So you don't like Redbull, but we've all drank one at some point...besides, if it keeps Jamie, Milton and the rest skating hard and being taken care of, I'm all for it.

The skating is undeniably gnarly but the whole vibe (music, editing, lifestyle cuts, hats etc) is beyond tacky.
If I was working at Real or Deathwish I'd be telling Zion and Jamie to start sending tapes to Darkstar or Blind because they are seriously tarnishing the reputations of their current board sponsors.

This time slap unconscious bias is at an all time high. That was honestly the most ENJOYABLE skate video I’ve watched this year outside of SS2. it was like watching a Nick Cage film, that’s the best I can describe it. It felt like they made a satire of serious skate films. Like it had such incredible skating(like great special effects), was supposed to be taken seriously with those actors(nick cage), yet it ended up being hilarious. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed harder or had more of a smile on my face in watching any skateboard video ever. If y’all can’t be entertained by how ridiculous this video is, then u must be the most lame person ever. Seeing Sheckler chug a red bull and throw the puig French handthrow after the drop literally made me laugh so fucking hard.

Undeniably high level of difficulty, but I find it bizarre that I barely remember anything but sheckler's tricks and the ender. I don't know if I have just become jaded, but hammers used to make a lasting impression on me!
And I sort of hate myself for this - because it's not fair to the skaters, who understandably accepts a check, so they can make a living - but I fucking can't stand shake hunt grip and red bull hats. Seriously if those two things are involved in a picture or some footage, I am not capable of giving the trick its full credit. It really rubs me the wrong way.

Is that much caffeine good for your heart? No. But I drink about 7 cups of coffee a day so I'm not going to peach to anyone. Is that much sugar good for you? No, but again it's no different than candy or dessert.

Energy drinks haven't been around long enough for someone to definitively prove that they're not linked to cancer or other long-term health issues, but they've been linked to alterations of the heart muscles and issues with blood pressure, as well as anxiety and nervous system disorders. Couple that with the fact that the target market for most energy drink brands are children and teenagers, whose nervous and cardiovascular systems are still growing and developing, and yeah, the whole energy drink NASCAR sponsorship thing is a lot shadier than kids in a Supreme video smoking cigarettes (and no one said that's a good look, so this is pure whataboutism). But sure, good for these dudes for sacrificing integrity and taste for their financial futures.

dude, no one here is hating on these guys for trying to secure a good financial future - but we are acutely aware of the damage their endorsement is doing to skateboarding as a whole. we have every right to brings this up with every red bull product placement, we are not dumb and we shouldn't let this message get diluted over time, like we let happen with nike etc.
the best possible scenario is that a small group of PRO skaters get paid well and produces good footage, while the subculture does not buy into the bullshit and their budget is fueled by the mainstream market of motorsports and the like

This is a thread on a skateboarding message board about a Red Bull video. The fact that you think any of those other things you listed are worth bringing up in this particular topic is laughable. Reese's Puffs didn't make a video, Red Bull did. That's why we're discussing Red Bull. Again, it's whataboutism at it finest.
Red Bull and many other energy drinks have only been around for 35 years or so, which means they haven't existed for long enough to definitively prove they don't cause issues like cancer much later in a user's life. Kinda like how no one expected cigarettes to cause lung cancer and we only learned this when long-time smokers hit their 60s. I included this in an earlier post, but you steamrolled over the point.
With that being said, dude, if you wanna be the guy sticking up for energy drinks and pretending people don't take proper umbrage in regards to weed, alcohol, breakfast cereals, fast food, etc. (hate to break it to you, but plenty of people take issue with the way these are advertised, even in skateboarding), go right ahead.

Redbull, Monster, Mountain Dew, Rockstar etc have such obnoxious, hateable logos which got me to wondering, would they still be so hated if they were branded with something more tasteful? I ruminated on it for a bit and my answer is yes. Yes they would.

I have a degree in chemistry, I can look at the ingredients of a red bull and I'm pretty familiar with it. Which ingredient do you suggest is SO novel it's a predictive cause of cancer? We've linked cigarettes to cancer since the 1940s.
My comments are focused to the posters on here who can't even search pubmed and read abstracts that are saying "energy drinks cause cancer!!!" derp...no, they don't.

I get that these companies obviously want to have these productive top level skaters but at what point is it worth sacrificing the image of the brand? One day in the near future, as teams line up on opposing sides of the course for the final playoff game of skateboarding, there will be a neat little retrospective video on the Red Bull team and how they were the first to introduce uniforms into skateboarding via the cap. As far as most kids are concerned, this will mean that Red Bull was the first real skateboard team and basically invented skateboarding. I read it in the Taurine pattern at the bottom of the can.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone on Real or Dearhwish gets a bigger paycheck from their board brand for riding for Red Bull. They are marketed more than other skaters thru Red Bull so they get more board sales and photo incentives, and the board brands probably love it. But also a thin line to not tarnish brand.
