It's way too expensive for most nations, in terms of trade and killing off a third of your work force. These days, people don't combat in the same way.
If anything, severe lack of resources might cause the next big conflict. But I don't know, we'll see.

We kicked off WW1 with an assassination of similar scale. So, there’s that.
Best case scenario, the blowback is contained to some sort of face-saving retribution, courtesy of Iran. Probably directed at Israel. Worst case scenario... a Vietnam-sized war with China and Russia propping up Iran? And a lot of economic turmoil? Worse?
Be interesting to see how it all unfolds. America already look like the bad guys, and threatening cultural targets isn’t helping.

Doubt anything like that will happen. Think a lot of it people are over-reacting because they hate trump or are hoping it'll create more hype against trump. If this happened during Obama, there would be no talks about ww3.
Like said above, next big conflict will probably come from lack of resources. If the effects of global warming are as bad as projected and people start to migrate in masses, that will cause major conflict. Or if countries start seriously doing stuff to prevent global warming, by downgrading the economy, while others choose not to partake, that could cause a lot of shit too

Climate change is already upon us and all we can do is adapt. Cut down our dependence on dirty energy, produce and consume less.
Our next big ass war will be on resources. It'll be for water.

War is horrendous.
I want people to survive and thrive. Fuck violence and perpetual warfare.
The people should rise. I want to die only a few ways. Old bombing down the aves in my late 80s. Fucking on the subway and it crashes when i cum as i shoot a speed ball or saving the life of someone else.

The standard of living (but not personal freedoms) is relatively high in Iran. As much as the leaders of Iran need to respond to such blatant provocations by the USA, they have a lot to lose.
Iran can cause trouble in the region with their militias and proxies but if it came down to conventional warfare with the USA, they would be in trouble.
Iran has a population of 80 million i.e a lot bigger than Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya etc. It is in no ones interest for another basket case failed state in the Middle East and I'm sure Europe is fretting over this big time.
Lastly, martyrdom (dying for a greater cause) is a concept held with an especially high regard in Iran and in Shia communities. Iran has a very strong ethnic identity and they are very passionate and proud of their background as they are effectively descendants of the great race of the Ancient Persians. Given these two cultural traits, I suspect that there would be no shortage of young Iranian men willing to sign up to fight for their country.
I hope that both sides are able to restrain themselves from escalating things further.
