I'm not rich nor have I been into Bourbon long enough to have tried anything too fancy but bourbon is my shit if I'm drinking liquor.
My current favorites, all reasonably priced for what they are:
-Woodford Reserve
-Buffalo Trace
-Larceny
This thread is for Kentucky Bourbon, not whiskey in general. Tennessee whiskey can get a pass I guess. I wanna try some crazy hard to get shit but I'm pretty content with my basic ass selections. They taste damn good.

Buffalo Trace is one of the best at really any price point. It's a little expensive, but not too terrible, though I go through a bottle a week. Best bang for your buck is Wild Turkey 101. I swear it used to be a lot cheaper, but they've tried to go upmarket. I find a lot of the expensive $50+ bourbons are good, but not really any better than anything you can get for $35.
I don't think bourbon should ever have been a luxury product and still feel kind of like a sucker for buying anything other than the Jim Beam handles I used to drink. It's one of my only real vices these days though.

Elijah Craig is good. Sometimes Trader Joe's will have bottles of bourbon but with Trader Joe's labeling that are pretty good and well priced. They had a Kentucky Bourbon for a while that was ridiculously cheap, like $11, and tasty, but then they jacked the price up.

I was a big fan of bourbon 'til I had way too much of it one night and it turned its back on me. I can no longer drink it without puking now, my body wants nothing to do with it. I'm on tequila now.
For me it usually went like this:
Buffalo Trace and Elijah Craig = Don't feel like paying too much, but don't want to end up with cheap stuff like Old Fitzgeralds'
Woodford Reserve= My dad's go-to, same with me. A little more expensive, but not by much. Preferred this to BT.
Blanton's Special Reserve = I wanted a nice bottle. This stuff was fucking awesome, but more expensive and couldn't find it as much. Bottle was dope.
I'd have other other stuff from time to time, but that was the usual stuff. I'd get a nice bottle of something new every time I went to the States.
Keep in mind I'm in Canada and don't have much access to the fancy small-batch stuff and our prices might be a bit different... probably more expensive.

Blanton's is superb. When I used to bartend, I'd sneak a finger or two every so often, but I've never dropped money on a bottle. I had a regular customer at the bar who'd been a chef on a cruise ship (he claimed he knew Tony Bourdain pretty well) and a few times when I'd get off early he would invite me to hang around, shoot the shit and have a few drinks. He drank nothing but Blanton's and would insist that I do the same. I drank like a king those nights.
Any time I've dropped money on a bottle 50-100 bucks, it's been for Scotch. Lately I've just been buying little flasks of bourbon, usually Beam or Evan Williams. Everything said about Woodford Reserve is true. It'd be my go-to if I was a little richer.

Blantons is my fave. I felt like I had money for a little bit, and it was my nightly. I had a long row of that galloping horse run cycle on my bookshelf. Then I realized I'm not actually wealthy at all, and stepped it down a notch or two. I do think Blantons is worth the money if you have it. Not crazy expensive.

Four Roses Small Batch or Single Barrel is seriously good stuff. It's usually Buffalo Trace for me (because Trace is basically Pappy...same distillery) but Four Roses should be tried.

Seems like a bad time of year to be buying bourbon, every store around me is out of McKenna 10 year BIB which I want to try, Bakers, Eagle Rare, Blantons, etc.

I’m a bartender at a whiskey and cocktail bar so I’m a pretentious prick.
Four Roses. Any of the seasonal releases they do are generally awesome. Al young 50th, Elliott’s select, small batch 2014.
Michters toasted barrel rye is one of my favorites over the last couple years.
Barrel dovetail, or the bourbon batches 19 through 21. They generally do blends of sourced whiskeys, bottled cask strength. I love their portfolio thus far and think they do incredible work with weird cask finishes.
Old forester 1910 and 1920.
Cheaper go-to options, I drink a lot of Weller Antique 107 when I can find it, and Elijah Craig is great just to have if I’m making an old fashioned or boulevardier.

Definitely went through a long Blanton's phase last year.
My local just started getting Woodinville from Washington State. It's pretty damn good, especially for sub $40 price tag.
AD Laws is decent for anyone in Colorado.

My go to is Evan Williams black label. I can get a liter in my area for 16 bucks and it tastes like it should cost twice that in my opinion.

Damn this Angel’s Envy is the shit. The bottle was 50 bucks here in Chattanooga. I heard it’s more expensive elsewhere.
I enjoy this one neat. The flavor is great. Kinda wish I had a brandy sniffer glass for such a good drink. I had one on the rocks the other day and it was so delicious.

Technically not a bourbon, but Michters "Unblended American Whiskey" is a phenomenal sub $50 bottle of whiskey. Great for cocktails but fuck is it so buttery smooth. Can't recommend it enough. It's one of my favorite whiskeys and I've been lucky enough to go through a very very expensive and drawn out bourbon and scotch phase. Really just a heavy liquor/cocktail phase but whiskey has my heart.
Michters American Unblended.
Don't get their bourbon, it isn't nearly as good.
On a budgetish, Eagle Rare is fucking solid for a $30 bottle. Buffalo Trace, despite being mainstream and mass produced, has an undeniably decent selection of whiskey when it comes down to it. If you have to go with a big whiskey brand, buffalo trace(same people making eagle rare) is the way to go.

Just picked up a bottle of Evan Williams single barrel that was barreled in 2012. Damn smooth. Great price too. A little plain Jane.
Tried a glass of Blanton’s while I was at a restaurant. I haven’t seen any bottles in the wild and I was curious. It was good but not my favorite.

Yeah, Blanton's never blew me away. Colonel E.H. Taylor is a solid bourbon that sells for a little less than Blanton's. I've had most top shelf bourbon and a ton of top shelf rye and scotch.
I'll give my unasked for opinion of some of my favorites.
Scotch: Tie between Balvenie Triple Cask and Arberlour A'bundh. Seriously great scotch. The A'bundh is a cask strength that has a mean flavor to it.
Bourbon: Colonel E.H. Taylor, Eagle Rare.
Japanese: Nikka Coffey Grain or Nikka Pure Malt.
All around: Michters Unblended American
Rye: Whistle Pig
Any of these whiskeys would be a respectable gift. There are better booze out there, I just haven't had them yet. This is the best of what I've had. I've tried a lot of different whiskey.

Angels Envy has a caribbean cask that makes for some great cocktails if you're into mixing whiskey. I had on old fashioned with it in nyc and it made a great drink. Very sweet so you don't even need sugar when mixing it.
Some port/wine barrel whiskeys are great. The A'bunadh scotch I recommended in a previous post is in a sherry cask.
There is a bourbon called "Yellowstone bourbon." That is in a wine cask and a fucking great bourbon. Totally worth buying if you see it. Basil Hayden's has a port finish but IMO, it is not worth the money. Basil Haydens has never impressed me for the price.
I'm so glad this is a thread on here. I went through a viscous cocktail/liquor phase with my roommate. At one point we had over 40 bottles on our bar and around 8 bottles of liquor just stashed around our house because it seemed funny. Nothing under $30 other than vermouth(which we had 5 different kinds of). We used to trash a good bottle of scotch in a night. I had an 18 year glenfiddich that we finished the same day among many other $50+ bottles. It was a decadent time but one I have a hard time regretting.
I can talk liquor for days. Anyone need a recommendation for any type of liquor, I'm the guy. The only thing I can't really get into is grapa. I know fuck all about it and I don't like the taste.

Picked up a handle of 101 just to make sure I can ride out any potential lock downs without finishing off my other bottles ;D at the rate I drink it will probably last a really long time though.

Situational update: brown liquors are sold out everywhere around me. I have maybe 2 1/2 bottles of bourbon on the shelf. All ready rationing!

Just got a 750ml of Old Forrester 100 proof for under 25 bucks. Drinking it on ice now and it’s quality, especially for the price. I looked for a minute before spotting this value 100 proof bourbon at the store. I can’t be spending high dollar on Bourbon in these uncertain times.

Seriously good on 3 cubes. Very reasonably priced. Very light on the nose which is kinda weird but the taste is nice.

People sleep on old granddad but that and W.L Weller are two price point whiskeys that I'd take over a lot of $30+ bottles. Try Weller if you like old grandad and the price.

Just picked up a Knob Creek 9 Year (100 proof) and it is so damn good. Still sticking with my good but cheap price point. Less sweet than any of the other ones I've tried lately. Love it.

Just here to parrot my love for Evan Williams. Black label and white label are the best bang for the buck IMO.
I have a tendency to start off with a cheap whiskey to get my taste buds acclimated. And Evan Williams White Label will now be my go to starter bourbon.
Shout out to my recent favorites Blantons, Bulleit, 1792 Full Proof, and Henry McKenna 10yr (sadly increasing in price).
No love for Scotch, Japanese or Irish whisky? Though I love bourbon, I think Scotch is my preferred whisky of choice.

I'm still new to rye whiskeys myself. Only one I bought was Sazerac Rye, not the expensive one, but a limited release. Definitely worth checking out. At first I didn't like it, but I became accustomed to it rather quickly!

Tried Rittenhouse and it was alright but didn’t have enough of an oily earthy taste to be for me.

Was at the store the other day to just browse and ended up buying High West Double Rye.
Was on sale for $35, couldn't pass up on it. All the rye posts got to me. I like it though. It's got good body and rye flavor with generous notes of baking spices. I'm not too well versed rye. The other one I had in recent memory was Sazerac, which I felt was a smooth, clean and distinct rye.
I also picked up an Angel's Envy Port Wine Barrel Bourbon. Ive been meaning to try some. They're somewhat hard to come by and I only hear great things. That being said.....it's alright.

So yeah I’m venturing into scotch now and I love it. I love the speyburn 10 and Glenmorangie 10 I have picked up so far. Definitely a more complex set of flavors and a more enjoyable drinking experience. Due to tariffs it’s really ticking pricey so Bourbon is still the well.

Yes! I'm with you on the scotch. If you have the chance to splurge on a Glenmorangie 18yr, I'd recommend it. Its around $100 but it's like sipping on a fresh orange peel.
Took me a while to try an Irish Whiskey, but you should check out the Sexton. I've bought it for $30. I need to find my cheap go-to scotch.
Stopped by the store today and wound up with a Wild Turkey 101. Still trying to find my favorite sub $30 bourbon. This was on sale for $20 and it came with a couple of bitters to make old fashions.

Though I haven't tried it yet, sounds like Monkey Shoulder may be good for you. It's like the Buffalo Trace of scotch. Always comes up in conversation when discussing best value. Around here it's normally $35 but I've seen it go as low as $30.
As mentioned above, i'm a fan of Glenmorangie. Haven't had their 10yr yet but that around $40 maybe a lil more.
UPDATE: Pleasantly surpirsed by the Wild Turkey 101. Packs a lot of flavor and is pretty smooth for being 50.5%ABV.

As far as Scotch goes, I like single malt/peaty stuff. Laphraiog & Lagavulin; also, Trader Joe’s has a nice house branded price point scotch that’s pretty good called Finlaggin.

Love it.
I definitely prefer Scotch to bourbon now, but bourbon will remain my go-to for price reasons. Among Scotch I still have only ventured into single malts. Speyburn 10, Glenmorangie 10, and now Glenfiddich 12. They have all been quite different from one another and I have liked all three. Still sticking with regular old Four Roses for the bourbon. It’s good.

Been trying to build up a little collection of Single Malts the last couple of years - currently have Lagovulin 16, Oban 14, Abelour 12, Balvenie Caribbean Cask, Caol Ila 12. I only really have Speyside and Islay ones so its cool to taste the obvious differences and try to learn each regions style etc.

For a while I was drinking the Evan Williams Bottle in Bond white label like every day. Very solid whiskey with a super low price.
Lately I have drinking much less, but still enjoy it in moderation. Made the unfortunate error of buying Johnny Walker Red Label a few months back. That is apparently infamous for being one of the worst Scotches around.
Some of my favorites are Old Grandad and Jameson. My whiskey experience is fairly basic as hell.

I live in Ireland and I'm fond of whiskey, but I'm also uncultured, so I'll drink pretty much anything.
Green Spot and Yellow Spot are particularly nice.
I should try more Scotch, bourbon and Rye whiskeys I gather.

I had the chance to try out a few Scotches I was curious about. Laguvalin 16, Oban 14, and Macallan 12.
Macallen 12 was my favorite of the three, which is good info for me to have as far as buying bottles goes. It seemed like the most straightforward Scotch to me of the three, but what do I know? Cheers.

Anyone keep a tasting journal? I have one for single malts with 127 entries at the moment. I went through a phase when I wasn't skating much where I got obsessed with scotch. A good chunk of the entries came from buying Drinks by the Dram from Master of Malt, where you can buy samples of whisky. I tried to taste one malt from every active distillery. Whisky tasting is pretty cool because it makes you more keen to the smell and taste of food and drinks.

evan williams is also my go-to. the best kentucky straight for the best price. i also really like their bonded bourbon, the white label but that is a bit more rare of a find. ive had the four roses, the bulleit, the bufflalo trace, wild turkey, bookers, plenty of single barrels, blah blah blah. yeah its good but why pay $30-$40 when i can get just as tanked off a $12 evan williams bottle and with a comparable taste? jim beam is also really good too for a kentucky straight but its more expensive than evan williams and less abv.

He is a Mexican Beer drinker (So Cal Mexican American) and I am not sure what he drinks for liquor but I am sure he would appreciate a good bourbon.
It’s in June so I am thinking something maybe sweetish/vanilla like. Prolly low on rye.

My go to average level bourbon is Ezra Brooks, or Jim Beam.
Next level up would be Bulleit or High West
If I'm really feeling fancy I'll get some Basil Hayden.

I dont think you can go wrong with something like buffalo trace as a gift for someone that may not be huge into bourbon, I got into bourbon a year ago but in BC there isnt a huge selection but I have tried most of what is readily available, I really like Knob Creek, WT101, Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Weller Special Reserve to name a few, but I did pick up a bottle of Redbreast 12 irish whiskey and lets just say it didnt last long..

Angels Envy Rye is probably my favorite drink. Phenomenal stuff. Up there with the Thomas H Handy.
Lagavulin 12 is always top dog of my Scotch pile, and the greatest of the Islays.

Bang-for-buck, it's tough to beat Wild Turkey 101. I prefer it over Bulleit and Buffalo trace, both of which are still very good, it's cheaper than both of those ($18 for WT101 vs $20-25 for Bulleit/Buffalo in my area), it's 101 proof and it's especially great if you're making mixed drinks; the flavor just stands up better than most . I like to sip it straight too though.
But if I'm mixing it, it's WT101 + Cock and Bull Ginger Beer + Lime. Or just WT101 and home-made lemonade.
Orrrr just straight, but next to a Lagunitas IPA. Man , that sweet/bitter whisky/IPA combo.

Couple of my friends are distillers and they tell me that, for cheap whiskey, old overholt and mellow corn are the moves. So that's mostly what I drink.

Evan Williams 1783 is my daily drinker. Little smoother than Black Label and like $16/17 for 750ml in NC. Great buy.
Buddy just gave me a Basil Hayden’s bottle, so I guess I’ll be fancy for a bit.

Thoughts on Powers?
Power's is good. Very similar to Jameson. I believe they're from the same distillery. From what I heard, up until recently there weren't too many active distilleries in the Republic of Ireland. I do love Irish whiskeys though, they go down so smoothly. At times too smoothly. Hahaha. Tyrconnell is another good one.
If you like Irish whiskeys, as well as Scotch whisky, you might want to try Connemara - they do a single malt peated whiskey that's really good.

If you come across it, I definitely recommend giving anything produced by Kavalan in Taiwan.
Really unique whiskies that mature much differently than those in Scotland or Japan, and their company history is wacky - they made coffee and computer chips before they got into the distillery game.
I recommend their Solist series, either the Vinho Barrique, Amontillado, and/or Ex-Bourbon. They're kinda pricey back home. If I weren't living in Asia I'd probably never have gotten ahold of any.
Their Classic and Concertmaster whiskies are much more affordable and good starting points to see what they can do.

Am I the only one that doesn't like Japanese whiskey? I've had a few and they taste watery to me. Don't remember brands though. I just thought the labels were kewl 😎.

I understand what you mean. Try Nikka From the Barrel, Taketsuru or Coffey Grain if you get the chance.
Gave up drinking til Easter. Looking forward to sipping on liquor and mixing some cocktails.
What are people's go-tos for rye? I'm looking for the cheapest rye that's still spicy. I've had Wild Turkey 81 Rye, Sazerac, High West Double Rye, Pikesville, Bullet Rye, Old Overholt and Woodford Rye. I would say Pikesville is my favorite so far, (followed by Sazerac and High West) but its more than I like to spend on the regular ($45 to$60). Made a killer Manhattan. Just picked up Redemption Rye for $23, fingers crossed.

My sister's husband is high end alcohol sales person. Homie's liquor hutch is filled with rare whiskeys. Never got to drink with him, and that's a good thing, but man, it's a serious collection. Dude's brother is getting married and he got him some bottles of some rare/expensive whiskey, can't remember what it is, but the distro sold it to him at cost, $60/bottle, and it's something package stores sell for $400+/bottle. Talk about a mark up.

To be honest, I'm not too fond of it either. I've had the chance to sample a fair assortment here and there (living in Japan), and while as a genre I've found it to be very consistent, and hitting "all the right notes," it seems overly processed/refined, if you know what I mean?
Like, if Japanese whisky were a skater, it'd be able to any trick flawlessly but have absolutely no soul or style involved.

So two of my good friends ended up being fairly successful craft distillers. I've asked them a few times what the best whiskey to get on a budget and they recommended: Old Overholt, Mellow Corn, Wild Turkey.
So that's mostly what I get for whiskey except for their stuff. I've also learned from them that a lot of "craft" distillers just buy whiskey from massive corporate distilleries and blend it. A huge portion of the industry is just marketing.
