Title: Grip tape removal?
Post by: mirlou99 on March 30, 2020, 07:59:21 AM
Hi! I bought a very used but still sound longboard to customize but I'm completely stuck on removing the griptape. I tried everything and heated it with a blowdryer for a long time, but can't get my razor under the tape. At this point, I'm not even sure if it's tape on there or some kind of spray on that's not removeable. Is it possible to sand it off, or at least get the grit off, so I can put on some new grip tape? Thanks!

It brings me no joy to tell you this:  You will never get that griptape off.  I’m sorry.

Would it not be an option to use sandpaper to sand off the grit?

No, Mr. Lou.  I don’t think that’s in the cards.

you use your fingers or a blade to pry the edges then carefully peel it off trying not to put too much strain on the top plys. I've heard using a blowdryer helps but I've yet to have a problem just pulling the shit off like a moron

You can use this to lay a thin coat over top of the griptape to create a smooth surface. You may need to dilute it a bit to get it thin enough.

If you soak the board in acetone it might break down the adhesive on the grip, make sure to give your board a nice soapy bath after  :D

Put a bit of milk on top of the deck and have your new baby kitten lick it off....

Sorry...

You just have to pry, peel and persevere... and then get some Goo Gone to clean it up after...

Plenty of gasoline & a match; works every time.
