Title: Covid setups AKA Isolation madness
Post by: moonordie on April 12, 2020, 10:40:19 AM
Well guys, the isolation (+ lack of skating) is messing with our already messed up minds and I know for a fact that many are putting together setups out from this boredom.
I want to see those covid setups

Rather than being a board I set up for covid this is the board I've been riding during covid.

My cruiser now turned everyday setup. With the parks closed I took to waxing a curb in my lot. I go down and slappy it everyday.

Bones big balls and trying that new Jessup ultra .

I have a fucked up tendon or something on the outside of my front foot when I Ollie or flick so I’m taking it easy just pushing Around , but can’t wait to find a good curb to slappy with this

Since Covid... no skateparks and I don't feel like driving so I've been enjoying random cruises on this:

I pushed  over 12 miles the other day, including hitting some rough banks and ledge spots along the way. Hit a DIY Jersey barrier on it yesterday and snagged a quick slasher.

I am now thinking of setting up a flat ground set up to get me through this bullshit. I have a Chocolate Tershy/ Couch deck on ice with a sub 14" wheelbase. I am going to set it up with Thunder 151s and some 54mm tablets in the next few weeks to try to relearn some flip trickery in the smooth car park a block from my house.

interested on your couch shape thoughts. Sub 14” would be my justification. Want something to cruise with big wheels once I go back outside. I just want to push.

ha ha thanks. Will certainly post feedback on the Couch shape once I have it set up. I'm trying to hold off a bit to bur though my existing set ups, but I have a nice flat ground spot super close to my house, so we shall see....

I don't have a camera capable of capturing the breadth of my mental illness, but from where I'm sitting I can see around 2 dozen full setups that I don't skate that often but have kept around for whatever reasons. Over by the door are the 4 or 5 I actually skate frequently and a handful of freshies that are on deck. Under my bed there's a stack of probably 15 that I'm either done with or didn't like that I always tell myself I'm going to sell but usually end up just giving away. Finally, on the other side of the room there's a couple boxes of new decks I don't plan on skating but I'm hoarding for various reasons.

Frankly it's pretty depressing.

Frankly it's pretty depressing.

I’ve got some stuff as well. Probably 3 completed set up, stuff for another 2, few extra decks.
I don’t really skate. I was working too much, just to kinda scrape by, and now I’ve been staying inside with the whole shelter in place. Although I don’t think I’m at a high risk to give/get the covid, just pushing around, I’ve been trying to just stay low/inside, so as to do my part. Where I live people are out and about pretty frivolously, seeing an old guy skating down the street is the definition of unnecessary.
And now and I’m just trolling the nets looking at other boards. Not needed.
For me what’s depressing is that All of my shit is relatively old (I haven’t bought a board or parts in 6 ish months), but I’ve got enough to last me till the end of my life. One complete would do that. Like if I was some poor South American youth, I could make one of my completed last for the rest of my days.
I say all of that to offer some sympathy.
I have tried getting rid of stuff/giving away. I’ve gotten into a cycle where I’ll do that and then re buy same stuff. To that point I just don’t give away 8” trucks anymore, because i should know I’m going to circle back.
The only temporary ‘cure’/‘solution’ is to skate as much as possible and that’s just not happening these days.
Boo hoo

Hey. If anyone's got stuff to give away I'd take some Indy 149's, preferably hollow cast or Ti!
Would be will to trade for a deck that's in my too much stuff pile..
Sadly, I've got decks that sat around too long that they became "collectors items". Anyone want a Daryl Angel P2? It's gonna be hot on the collector market, right?
Enough product to last me? Maybe if I milked the decks but I don't have much in larger sizes. You're making think I should stock up a lil! Gonna need some more wheels.. hmm..

I'm not skating much right now but my 7 year old daughter asked me to teach her so she is cruising on one of my old completes.  7.625 Paul Rodriguez Plan B, 7.5" venture lows, spitfire 55.5s, random bearings. The wheels are obviously way too big but she doesn't weigh enough to get wheelbase cruising so it works for now.

Those setups are mine.  The black one at the bottom is a 9.25" Lib Tech Jamie Lynn Rat Tail.  It's super poppy and uses their tech construction that makes it about the same weight as the 8" Mini Logo - and lighter than the 8" South Central pressed deck in the pic.

Lib Tech decks seem to be scarce, but more available in summer than winter - so keep an eye out for one.

Originally was this board ^, shape feels great though the wheelbase measures out to be a tiny bit over 14.5. Should be a fun, non tech setup to mess around on.

I was just making a similar whinge about wheels, so I’ll keep it going: some shaped boards 8.5 and down would be hot, 8” preferably, or less even. I’m sure there isn’t a huge market. Someone had a punk point that was small 10 years ago....welcome?

Yup, standing on it feels good. Definitely the biggest board I've skated overall, should be a nice contrast with my 8.25 more 'serious' tech setup.

Real Kyle Walker 8.18
Venture 5.8
SML Wheels 52mm 97a, conical with a plastic core
Assorted bolts and bearings

Wasn't feeling the Real setup with Tensor Maglight ATG, WB was a tad too short, and I wanted to wear this board out till after this COVID shit blows over before I setup another board. Really feeling the difference in truck weight, I'll save the titaniums for another setup. But the pop is explosive when I can actually get the timing and force down. Loving the soft wheel on rougher asphalt, wish they were slightly bigger in a 54.

As you can see the curb I have is rough as hell; no amount of wax will save it and lots of elderly folk live around here so I don't want to paint it and cause them to slip and injure themselves.

I'm going to need help with slappies - I'm riding up with my feet wide apart, like in over the front and back bolts. Do I just semi-manual up to get my trucks to lock in?

1- find a better curb to learn on

2- wide stance is fine. You don’t want to lift the board at all tho. You want to quickly unweight the front front as let the front trucks bump on, then as you continue carving on,lighten up the tail and after that gets on get in the backseat for the grind.

You could paint just the edge, though that would still be slick with rain.
Could also wax it on hot days so it soaks in before you skate it.

Bs slappy..
Ride straight at a curb and kickturn to axle stall. That's the basic motion. Now try it at 45 degrees with some speed.
Front foot over the back bolts for me but completely over the bolts works too.
Back foot in the pocket, if you're picking up your front truck a lot scoot your foot forward.
Don't worry about getting in with your front truck first, just work on doing as low of a kickturn as possible to get up the curb. Let your feet/legs be realitively light/soft so your board still wanna ride up the curb. But you will wanna kinda jam it in to get the grind going. I think of slashing the lip like a surfer, there's probably some twisting/swinging of the hips going on but I'm not thinking about it.
If you ride out on top that's good, maybe try a lil less effort, umph.. Same thing if you end up leaning back too far and wanna no comply out (back back, not back towards your tail).
If you're getting stuck in feeble you're not putting enough into the kickturn and starting the grind. Same for those frustrating primo grinds!
Once you get the hang of the kickturn into a grind try to ride parallel but kinda far away from the curb.. lotsa speed, get tucked, think slashdawg, and frontside carve into the curb, then quick backside carve into the slappy.
A good lock-in will be the back truck butted up against the toe-side wheel. Or your back truck grinding right over the kingpin. This can look extra steezy in a slasher 80's way. And it'll wear a funky Gullwing groove into your back truck.

A local skater/artist who also does a small clothing line did the art. He’s @lurkshouston on Instagram. He seems to occasionally do one-off decks like this and Beantooth Skateshop sells them. I happened to see it when he posted a picture and really liked it. A couple days later I saw that the shop was selling it and DMed to swing by and get it. I wanted it for the art but had to skate it once I got it. The small nose and somewhat short WB makes it feel like a much smaller board; way different than any of the other stuff I’m riding these days.

Skated the driveway for the first two weeks using my regular set-up. After that, we got bored and started skating around the neighborhood. I didn't have a good set up for the roads around here--a little rough. So I decided to buy some softer wheels and ended up buying a new deck, too.

This deck is fun for causing around the streets in our neighborhood and hitting up the elementary school up the street.

Kicked up and down the roads around this apartment I moved to... No ditches where I went, but found some decent curbs and 2 drops 3' or so

An abandoned carwash that has some nice sloped driveways to jump off of but it had people lurking around and using the shade..

66's on 8.75 is oddly nice af.. Never landed any fliptricks in my life tho

Crosspost with the big boy thread,
Second covid setup
(https://i.imgur.com/KamSIxOl.jpg)
Baker 9" Kader Popsicle, stated as 9x33 WB: 15 but my measurements gave me 8.75x33.125 WB: 15
Local brand griptape called Jigsaw, pretty decent and the graphic doesn't bother me at all.
Venture 6.1 Kader ones.
Bones STF 99 V4 54mm with big balls.

Last year when we first went into full lockdown in NZ, i had a bunch of new parts i was saving for when other parts were done, but just went fuck it we all might die anyway and set the shit up. Quasi 8.5 below, can't remember the name of the graphic. Independent titanium forged 159s, 53mm 99a f4 classics, bones swiss. Was basically my dream setup.
I have a sheet of clear mob grip that i use to customise the top on each deck so i know which end is which at a quick glance, used this sticker which I've had in my collection for 17 years.

There's a bunch of great mellow ledges and curbs, a steep driveway bank, a three stair, all within 100metres of my house. Skated it for two weeks then left it resting by my front door for 15min after a shopping trip, realised my mistake and it was gone. Still check the grip job on every skateboard I see or hear roll past, just in case I find the bastard

Too right. About 3 years ago, I left a newish set up and a cruiser in my car overnight. Somebody came along and picked the lock on my door and stole them. Hadn't even skated the cruiser yet. I did a black/clear between the bolts grip job because I liked the top graphic (long ass Dave Carnie poem) and to this day I check everybody's set up I pass on Venice Blvd looking for that weird grip job or somebody skating a Zig Zagger with black G Slides.
