This is a fucking gnarly photo and a good cover but you would never know it because of some athleisure wear with a Garret Hill touch. Pretty conservative fit by Nyjah's standards
it really isn't a gnarly photo. Back tail el toro happened within a year and that at least felt exciting as a known quantity being attacked. There's nothing dynamic or exciting about it or the layout. Nyjah feels almost photoshopped on. Atiba's become lazy post-Hasselblad. Just stands up at 5 o clock of the obstacle and snaps a photo.
If Jake Hayes back nose blunting the white UCI hubba was a Dickies ad next to the shitty music section, this photo should have gone to Ricta.
edit: maybe there's a lack of quality cover shots because of the pandemic and I'm being too picky

I get what your are saying but I feel like half of skating is looking good on a skateboard. Now 90% of that should be about skate style. But that is hard to get across in a photo so you should try not to look like a goofball when shooting photos. Everyone with bad fits deserves some flack. Garret wants his pants back.

Robbie Russo:
We got out of the van on a trip to swim in a river. Gabe found a little rapids section - it wasn't too crazy but at the end it sucked you under and then spit you out like ten feet downstream. We all had a god and then it was Robbie's turn. He took the rapids fine but then at the end, nothing but a shoe popped up. Seconds later he was in the middle of the river, panicking, struggling to swim to the other side. He barely made it. Now it was time to leave but Robbie didnt want to swim over. "Can't i just walk around?" he yelled. We looked at each other "It's a river!" Pete and i yelled back. "Nah, ill walk around" he repeated, not getting it. "Robbie it's a river!" we yelled again. After a short debate, Pete swam over and helped him back. Robbie may be great in empty pools, but definitely don't add water. Not the strongest swimmer.

Step a few feet to the right from where Atiba is standing then move slightly forward and get lower. This is to show some space between my nyjah’s right arm and his torso.
From the current perspective, his arm is lost in the jacket. When that happens, the viewer loses the sense of tension between the turn of the shoulders and hips that holds the back tail in place. This is likely a reason why many people here are saying the photo makes the trick look easy or unexciting.
You could also try to time your shot and adjust the framing to place that tree in the background right behind the skater. Pair that with a slightly lower angle and you can exaggerate the feeing of height and give a more commanding presence to the skater at the same time.
A lot of elements in the photo are well-balanced compositionally speaking. You can tell Atiba does have a strong understanding of how to take a picture. However, it’s so balanced that it makes the trick feel “safe”. It’s strong as a photo in the traditional photographic sense, but could be more dynamic as a SKATE photo that’s trying to illustrate the gnarliness and excitement of a back tail on a big rail.
A lot of variables go into shooting skating obviously. It’s easy to critique in hindsight. But those are a few things I might change, since you asked.

Hosoi was an innovator of the street Ollie and the jump ramp ollie in the 80s with Gonz and TG and obviously Natas. Gary just gave Nyjah the opener and did it all with a straight face, makes me think about Thrashers motives.
