Title: Your skateboarding pet peeves?
Post by: Torre on July 28, 2020, 08:09:27 AM
My personal pet peeve isnĒghost popĒ (when you do a trick without popping the tail on the ground). It angers me when it happens
Another thing is fucking pebbles. Hit one of those, and donít see it coming, you can get folded.
Thatís all I got for mine for now but wanna year other people too

Ghost pop is the worst.
Homies who only skate the same park all day every day and wonít go skate street with you.
People at skateparks who put their phones, drinks/food, baby carriages, etc on the ground and get mad when a board inevitably flys out and hits their shit.
Dropping my shoulder a bit on landings so I stick the trick bolts but end up stepping off. This only really happens to me on bs heel, nollie fs bigspin, bs bigspin, bs flip.
People who suck at skating but try to give you trick tips on tricks they canít even do themselves
Posers
Unaware people at the skatepark who just walk and sit around in high traffic spots
People who bring remote controlled cars to skateparks
15/16 year old ďtoughĒ guys who try to fight ever scooter kids mom at the skatepark
Pretenders
People who clowned me for skating in middle school and high school now asking me to teach them how to Ollie
Girls who clowned me for skating in highschool but now are getting in to it because itís fashionable and they discovered Leticia on Instagram.
Shitty art and editing in full lengths
Strobeck zoom (I do like his editing tho)
Shitty parts using up good songs

The "cool" local that thinks he should get to snake everyone and never wait his turn.

The "cool" local that goes and does whatever trick I'm trying.

When i'm on a solo sesh without a tool and a bolt comes loose and rattles.

Shinners on warm up tricks.

Being around 'serious' skaters with no sense of fun/humour

Squeaky trucks

Phones always being out

People over the age of 21 that still say, "buttery," when describing anything skate-related. Hearing that shit gives me secondhand embarrassment.
The Strobek face-zoom is also unforgivable.

For me - griptape that isn't completely black; none of that cut out, Shake Junt, spray or art jobs, piss colored griptape, plain black 100%, maybe a line near the tail if I'm feeling adventurous. I know some people can get really creative with their grip jobs, but I'm a stickler that way.

If that happens, they're really not your homies. The remote control crowd puts homicidal thoughts into my head.

i fucking hate ghost pop

my nose/tail is worn down by almost an inch, but i can't afford a new deck right now. Every trick I do I barely pop and as a result the board doesn't stick to my feet good and even though I can still land my tricks, I hate the way they feel all sloppy and shitty.

I don't even know if its my board, it could just be me sucking balls. You could potentially still pop it, i mean, theres still wood beyond the bolts right? I know kids who can skate the most squared off shit and they pop their tricks just fine.

Anybody know any tips or causes for ghost pop?

I try and skate my shit till itís pretty razored, especially now with everything going on. Usually when Iím getting ghost pop itís because Iím getting ahead of myself and thinking about the next step of the trick instead of focusing on the pop. Usually Iíll focus on popping the tail instead of what happens next and it corrects itself. Sometimes itís a sign that thereís something wrong with your setup since your timingís getting mixed up, maybe lower trucks or smaller wheels. usually itís mental though.

A lot of it has to do with the leverage of your board and the amount of time it takes your nose/tail to hit the ground. Lower trucks, smaller wheels, and mellower kicks can help. Sometimes popping from deeper in the pocket or closer to the nose (depending on the setup) helps.

you need to stop watching the "new" kids. it's like listening to the "new" music, it's fucking garbage , has no soul, and has no sustenance. watch the shit that you grew up on like ethan fowler, julien, cards, parts, old tom penny, etc. that kind of skating will be infinitesimally better than anything that is being put out right now. i guaran-fucking-tee it. nowadays, people are only focused on doing tricks rather than just skating. there are exceptions but they are far and few in between.

Decks with tails on the smaller length side especially with a huge nose and boards where the tail is REALLY less angled than the nose. Throws of my timing and pop feel completely and just looks weird to me in general.

When i don't land something perfectly and i still get props for it, yeah sure a switch flip bs tail bigspin out is a hard trick but don't give me props until i've done it 100% perfect.

When youíve gone skating with someone a few times, you know their name. Then you randomly run into them and pretend we donít know each other.
Flakes. But Iím guilty of the too.
Lazerflips.

People Spitting, littering when thereís a rubbish basket two feet away.

People that spit on the concrete around where I'm skating, especially when there's dirt or grass a few feet away. I don't give a shit if you spit but ffs don't do it where someone could step in it or roll through it.

Dudes that message me to skate constantly but never show up, then bitch about no one ever inviting them out to skate, or when I've told someone we're heading out to a different park or spot and they inevitably ask for a lift what time we're meeting up to leave, and they end up asking me to wait for them coz they're only just about to leave home when it's already 30 fucking minutes past the time I wanted to be there. Or picking someone up and having to wait a half hour for them to be ready, it's fuckin ridiculous, like cunt you knew we were on our way, and you said you were ready when I left.

This one guy at my local who's obsessed with nollie/switch tricks. He straight refuses to learn normal tricks and shits on them for some reason, and can't even land majority of the tricks he tries and blames it on some injury. He's like a caricature of a poser idiot that talks shit about everyone else's style and trick selection while going on about his nollie hard flips except no one's ever seen him land one out of a thousand attempts and he's too sore to do it right now.

The biggest one is overly waxed ledges and rails. I lost a majority of my tricks around 2013-2014 when the next gen started putting wax on everything and my paranoia of slipping out got heavy.

I don't mind people smoking weed at the park/spot but don't turn it into just a smoke sesh.

Agree with the spitting on the park, i instantly call those guys out and first i tell them you do it again and i'm beating the fuck out of you, then i say that if i end up riding over any spit i'm truck fucking the shit of you. This has always worked in the past but if it doesn't work i wouldn't be afraid to go to my car and grab my gun.

Again, colored griptape.

I got an almost new setup for $35 that I planned to cannibalize for parts, it was a sick Alien Workshop graphic which I wanted to skate anyway. Turns out it has piss yellow Toy Machine griptape, spent a good 30 minutes ripping that stuff off. No hate on Toy Machine, but colored grip is a no go.

Anything that's not just black grip is shit, aside from generally being ugly, all coloured grip and clear grip in my experience has been 10 times more abrasive than MOB grip, which I hate, just unnecessarily harsh and kills your shoes so much quicker. I like Jessup coz it's a good balance, not to harsh but not slippy. Actually that grizzly everybody skates series grip was pretty good too, I had the morrisey one, he was doing a back Smith, kinda hilarious

I dunno, goin for a gun sounds like pretty emotionally charged and weak response. I'd rather just hack up a gob on their grip tape and tell them to quit bitching or change their grotty habit, it's not hard to spit somewhere other than where we skate haha

stop thinking emotionally like a little girl and think like a man for a second, I'm the one that would save somebodies life when it came down to it. Those same people who go around spitting wherever they want and telling people to fuck off when they are called out for it are the same people who will rape little girls and murder the weak.

I dunno, goin for a gun sounds like pretty emotionally charged and weak response. I'd rather just hack up a gob on their grip tape and tell them to quit bitching or change their grotty habit, it's not hard to spit somewhere other than where we skate haha
Can you read bud? or do you just have a fish memory and cant remember anything after the last sentence? Just wondering because literally the first thing i said was " i instantly call those guys out "

i wouldnt say that seeing people spit at/on the spot is what triggers me but driving in california and seeing so many bad drivers, definitely puts very bad thoughts in my head.......... which is why i dont own a gun.

Haha yeah mate I can read, can you comprehend a simple statement? Because all I said is that going for a gun is a dumb reaction for the situation. I didn't say anything to imply I had read it as being your initial reaction though. It's stupidly overkill regardless of how far it escalates from "calling them out". Just wondering, because it sounds like you're only hearing what you want to hear.

Getting a gun over saliva is the most emotionally thinking response ever. Only pussies who canít fight go for guns. Imagine your surprise when other dudes at the park or a scooter dad pull out their own guns and you lose your life over saliva, pathetic

It's usually transition specifically, but I hate when people just stand in front of banks/quarterpipes at the park. If you don't wanna go too fast at the ledge that's fine, but there are more ways to accomplish that then just standing in front of other obstacles waiting.

you couldn't be any more stupid lmao, I never said i would get a gun over saliva, I clearly said if calling  them out doesn't work, i would beat them up and if beating them up doesn't work then i'm truck fucking them and THEN if that doesn't work i'll go grab my gun.  So no it's not over saliva nor would it be emotional considering it was my FOURTH option dumbfuck. You also have to consider the circumstances, for it to ever go that far I would have to catch them spitting, i then go to Option 1 Calling them out BUT that doesn't work they responded by spitting even more, I then try option 2 which is beating them up, only problem is there are 4 or 5 of them ( as that is the only way i wouldn't be able to beat them all up ) so that doesn't work, i then move on to Option 3, truck fucking them BUT again there are 4 or 5 of them and they have boards of their own and a couple of them are brandishing knifes and threatening people and a younger skater tried to call them out as well but they jumped him for it, so option 3 DIDNT work, now its time for option 4.

Also i'm beloved at my local, even the scooter dads respect me as i'm known for keeping the locals safe. Just because you are a weird fuck that scares scooter dads and they would likely want to shoot you for sexually looking at their kids doesn't mean they want to shoot me.

Now piss off, the local biker that hit his head jumping down the 8 stair and can't even wipe his own ass is still smarter then you.

This has got to be one of the most emotional responses Iíve got on this site, nice hypocrisy. No matter how you frame it, getting your gun over someone spitting is wack no matter how many options you give them to stop. Guns are for protection, hunting, and sport. Never murder unless youíre a giant pussy. Also congratulations on exposing yourself as a nonce, nobody was talking about sexually looking at children until you. Grade A projection right there. It makes it even creepier how you see yourself as some skatepark kid hero, catcher in the rye type. Youre just like Aaron Kyro I can tell. Enjoy palling it up with the little scooter kids and their unaware dads. Iíll stick to hanging out with the skaters at street spots and spitting where ever the fuck I want

Calling me hypocritical? Look at Yourself you literally said the first thing guns are for is protection, in my very post i stated the spitters were threatening me and even Jumped a young skater which is literally the definition of protection but i guess sense i'm a better skater then you i don't have the same right to protect my self and others as you do right?

Also you have no idea who your trying to flex to about street skating, You and your group of street skaters are the ones who sit down and pull out your phones when i show up at the spot.

Also it's pretty hilarious you try to pull the bad ass card when you literally fear being shot by a scooter dad, pussy.

[close]
Youíre exactly the type of person who shouldnít own a gun
[close]
stop thinking emotionally like a little girl and think like a man for a second, I'm the one that would save somebodies life when it came down to it. Those same people who go around spitting wherever they want and telling people to fuck off when they are called out for it are the same people who will rape little girls and murder the weak.
[close]

I dunno, goin for a gun sounds like pretty emotionally charged and weak response. I'd rather just hack up a gob on their grip tape and tell them to quit bitching or change their grotty habit, it's not hard to spit somewhere other than where we skate haha
[close]
Can you read bud? or do you just have a fish memory and cant remember anything after the last sentence? Just wondering because literally the first thing i said was " i instantly call those guys out "
[close]
Getting a gun over saliva is the most emotionally thinking response ever. Only pussies who canít fight go for guns. Imagine your surprise when other dudes at the park or a scooter dad pull out their own guns and you lose your life over saliva, pathetic
[close]
you couldn't be any more stupid lmao, I never said i would get a gun over saliva, I clearly said if calling  them out doesn't work, i would beat them up and if beating them up doesn't work then i'm truck fucking them and THEN if that doesn't work i'll go grab my gun.

[close]
[close]

You seriously must have some mental issues, atleast edit your old post if youíre going to try and lie about what you said. Nobody tried to flex on you with street skating, you tried to flex on us with skateparks. If youíre such a skate god drop your most recent part or quit talking all the game.

Nice reading comprehension retard, i don't have to edit my post because you literally quoted it " BUT IF IT DOESNT WORK " clearly implies that i tried to call them out on it, it didn't work and if it didn't work it clearly means i was met back with violence and threats hence protecting myself and others. i fucking hate ghost pop

my nose/tail is worn down by almost an inch, but i can't afford a new deck right now.

Ghost pop happens when the wheelbase is either too long or too short, sometimes you have to go through truck madness to sort out that feeling butttttttt the results will make you love that deck or those trucks a thousand x's more.

I had a thread about this awhile back https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=107458.msg3128908#msg3128908

I've found a short wheelbase helps with a thunder or venture now longer wheelbases the opposite affect happens like an Ace or Indy.

People who dont skate watching me skate and I dont mean somebody just casually walking by cause I'm cool with that but when somebody sits down or lingers around for too long then yeah that gets to me

No weird cut or colored grip

Have to have low trucks with 50mm or smaller wheels

Have to have all black hardware except for 1 colored indicator bolt in the top left of the nose

Last but not least those "do a kickflip" fuckers

Brah why did you send him down the dark path of gear madness.

I'll agree, trying to find that perfect setup where all the parts work right is addictive but also time consuming. The more time you spend messing around with your setup means less time you get to spend actually getting used to your setup. I try and limit my changes to broad strokes (tiny WB = Ventures, small WB = Thunder, large WB = Indy); you know pretty quickly when you first set up your board if things are going to work or not.

(let's not get into cast vs forged baseplates, wheel size, fingers of flat, concave, kick steepness, risers, bushings and pivot cups)

No need to go there with that madness as you said short WB Thunder/Ventures Wide Indys/Ace or equivalent with lesser brands.

All black grip (maybe a line or two like Drehobl no colorized grip) raw trucks or solid colored trucks no fancy shmancy sparkly or colorway, allen bolts, white wheels preferably wide conicals or something similar.

peeves hmmmm chips dinged sides razortail dirt or dog shit gum I'm over it and I'll cut that grip out.

Randoms yelling do a --------- trick! No! how bout fuck off!

Meatheads at the park you know the type the ones that  take themselves way too seriously these guys can fuck the fuck off.

People who rage at the park?! why?! you sour the mood by getting mad at a piece of wood......

Oh and the types of people who ask too many questions like what about this brand yada etc etc....? like what you wanna like who cares? except Braille and co. they should be on pedophile watch list.

I donít like when people pull their pant legs up between tricks.  Like, they grab the pant legs off of their quads and do the quick little yank then do the trick.  Rob Welsh had pants 5 times the size of any dude today and he just let them hang.  Man up.

Not with skateboarding itself as a sport, but why the fuck do skate shops mail the free grip that comes with a new deck rolled up? If I am buying a deck and it is coming in a box that is essentially a little bit bigger than the length and width of the deck, just lay the grip flat on top of the deck, in the box. Other skate shops do it. Having to unravel and apply grip after it's been rolled up and sitting in a hot cardboard box through distribution is so fucking annoying. I usually end up with it flat on the deck but with a few more air bubbles than I normally would  have. Granted, thank you for the free grip and I should just be able to put on grip better, but it just seems like such an easy fix, especially if its coming with a new deck.

People calling it "tre flip".
This pissed me off like 10-15 years ago when the younger kids started saying it, but what blows my mind is that even the older generation, including people older than myself, who definitely never grew up with it, are saying it now. Even I end up saying it by mistake because the dumbfuckery rubs off on me, and it makes me wanna eat a gun every time. What the fuck is up with this dumb term?

No, seriously. I've been asking people for a decade to explain to me how the fuck "360 flip" becomes "tre / trey", and I've never gotten a remotely logical answer. Was is suddenly renamed after some dude named Trey who had really steezy 360 flips?

"three flip" sounds dumb as hell too. When people tell me if I can do one, I either do three kickflips in a row, or try to do a triple kickflip just to confuse them. However, at least "three" has some logic to it, just like we often say "backside five" as an abbreviation for "backside 540". But how the hell did "three" turn into "trey"? Was it some dumb Americans failing to copy a french guy with a speech impediment? Someone please relieve me from this hell of not knowing why the whole world has gone to shit!

I also concur with this sentiment I abhor the truncating of words example cra cra, F'real, tre flip, 3 flip,  what is a easily enunciated name just call it 360 flip wtf is the matter with you?

I guess the laziness of certain terms is easily rubbed off as I've said something of the variance just I hate it when it leaves my mouth.

I believe it was in Tennessee that it really honed in on my annoyance for when someone says Haaauy Man Duu a Tray Frip think of the most annoying redneck hick accent combined with the screeching sound of forks on a plate, that's how ear raping and painfully annoying it sounds.

Nobody said this one that I can see:

When people you know or skate with always cry poor, have thrashed boards and want things for free, but all their social media accounts show them looking like they are living the high life, fancy meals, drinks, weed or whatever.

If you can afford to live it up when you are not skating I have no sympathy for you if you cannot afford a board, shoes or the basics like that.

Most things have already been said by others, from what I could see that I would think are on my list.

Another one though, re wax.

I have no issue with using wax, but I would get very annoyed by kids I see who cannot really skate, over waxing everything they can to try to grind or slide it but still not making it any better on themselves, but at the same time making the obstacle almost unskateable with too much wax on everything.

More than a few guys I know have ended up with broken bones from slipping out on over waxed things, granted some of them are older and not kids, but I have still seen a few kids slip on wax and get solid injuries too over the years.

2. Go skate. You suck. Everything is all over the place, you have no control, and you miss basic tricks

3. Get mad, increase in desire to yell/throw ur shit but u would feel 100x dumber if u actually did it

4. Madness makes u suck even more

5. Start saying fuck under ur breath until u start yelling fuck

6. look like dickhead and want to go home before u kook urself into oblivion, but damnit u just want 1 well-done trick

7. go home mad, a lil injured, having not landed shit, still wanting to skate, still stressed out from work. What do u even do now? Too mad to jack off. TV/videogames suck.

No, seriously. I've been asking people for a decade to explain to me how the fuck "360 flip" becomes "tre / trey", and I've never gotten a remotely logical answer.

But how the hell did "three" turn into "trey"?

You seriously don't know that "tres" is 3 in Spanish?! We barely have any Mexicans in Canada and Spanish is not a common language here and even I knew that "tre flip" comes from "tres". My friend and I both say "bomb" for 360 flips, which comes from people saying "tre bomb".

My own pet peeves? I have a bunch but for today I'll say... friends who never skate, and then when they finally come out to skate they just sit down right away and sulk about how they suck at skating now, like they don't know why. I'm so sick of it that I've kind of starting being blunt about it with friends who do it. "Yup. Pretty obvious. You don't skate. You'd be better if you did. It's not rocket science." Usually met with a response about how they're so sore now that they're older, as if I'm not even older with more serious injuries under my belt. People just need to own that they got lazy and don't want to put in the effort anymore, but I guess it's a hard pill to swallow.

Oh, and people like SlapRHaters skateboarding at all - that sucks. Spitting sucks, but if you're the type of person who would threaten to fight a person, truck a person, or GET A FUCKING GUN... over spitting... you need to just stay at home away from normal humans who aren't a danger to others like yourself.

People calling it "tre flip".

No, seriously. I've been asking people for a decade to explain to me how the fuck "360 flip" becomes "tre / trey", and I've never gotten a remotely logical answer.

But how the hell did "three" turn into "trey"?
[close]
You seriously don't know that "tres" is 3 in Spanish?! We barely have any Mexicans in Canada and Spanish is not a common language here and even I knew that "tre flip" comes from "tres". My friend and I both say "bomb" for 360 flips, which comes from people saying "tre bomb".

This has crossed my mind, but I didn't think it was even worth mentioning. Sure, I understand that people might say "tres flip" for "three flip" in Spanish, but that doesn't at all explain where "trey flip" comes from. The pronunciation for the Spanish word "tres" isn't even remotely close to "trey". I know that Americans generally have no ability to comprehend foreign phonology, but I still can't see how they'd fuck it up that badly. In any case, why would the Spanish term end up spreading worldwide and basically replace the real trick name?

Are you admitting that you have no idea how slang evolves? It isn't supposed to be a logical progression from a to b.

Tre flip.

I prefer 360 flip and couldn't tell you the origin of Tre flip but when people have the option of using one syllable compared to three it just makes sense that they'll shorten the language

Youre kidding right no fucking way lmao

I the being the one to explain front/backside. I shouldn't because I learned late what the deal was(talkin slides an grinds here). But I hate it. I was skating a construction site that had a pile of poorly stacked like sheet metal, so a de facto ledge. Having a good ol time and then another enterprising chap rolls up, now I usually leave at that point, I'm not good at skating and just don't like people, but he talked me into a sesh. Nice boul, had a six pack of sum beer with him and offered me one. I digress, so he bets me at skate like 4 times and like looks guy I'm really just tryin to boardslide this jawn. So we start skating the ledge thing. He's reggie and I'm goofy. He front bods it 1st try, dick, and I go for the plainversion. He goes oh shit front board, sick!... I was like baffled. Didn't say anything at first but my larry david took over. I calmly explained the difference and this guy was shocked and pretty much thought I was the asshole.
Tldr, I don't wanna tell you it's front/backside but I can't help myself.

How do I think it's pronounced? It's not really a matter of opinion. In the Spanish language, it is pronounced /tɾes/, and that is simply a fact. If you compare it to the English /tɹeɪ/ (trey), you'll find that they only share one single phoneme (e), which in the case of one-syllable words make them distinctly different, phonetically speaking. Although not as distant as, say, the single-syllable words "tree" and "ball", they're decidedly not similar enough to argue that one could be derived from the other.

We're obviously talking about slang here. Here in Japan, everyone used the Japanese slang term「サブロク」until a few years ago, but it has now been almost completely replaced by "tre", so I'm very aware that slang spreads like wildfire within global communities. However, as a foreign language teacher with a degree in linguistics I can not see how it originated from the Spanish term. It's simply too far fetched.

Honestly, I always shared your sentiment that the term tre flip was linguistically poor (and generally hated it altogether, I grew up with that trick being called a 360 flip so I'll still call it that). To be honest though, it's probably an abuse of language to begin with - it's not people with degrees in linguistics who made it up, but the skate world of the 00's moments after it realized Europe Barcelona Macba and Sants existed. In the words of Nicholas Ray, don't expect too much. To this day, Thrasher drops Paris edits with Spanish titles.

When I was a teenager, it was kids lying about their skate ability, tricks they've done, "sponsors" etc. Had a friend say he got gear from Active but always showed up with a chipped-ass board and never tried anything. Another neighborhood kid said he was sponsored by a local shop, he wasn't even close to that level. Just made sessions annoying.

For sure trash being left at the park, there's literally a garbage can right next to the gate to enter the park.

Spitting on the concrete. I generally just go, "Hey man, can you do me a favor? Next time you need to spit can you spit through the fence into the grass? No one wants to fall in or roll through your loogie. Thanks." That works every time. Turns out if you're not a dick, people respond to that because they realize they messed up, but you were cool about it.

People bringing things other than water into the park, because they always fucking spill them. I've cleaned up soda messes, ice cream, pizza, all sorts is weird shit. The hot fudge mess was the fucking worst by far. Took shit tons of water to wash that out. There are picnic tables right outside the skatepark. Keep your shit over there. It's not hard.

I started bringing a broom to my local because bike kids kept dragging dirt and pebbles onto the concrete. One day a bunch of really small kids littered the whole miniramp with crisps (they called it a crisp party, or so they told their mom who thought nothing of it) so I went to clean it with my broom and they asked me if I was the janitor. I donĎt even skate the miniramp, just doing it for the greater good :-[ I avoid the park now and skate schoolyards on the weekend while the kids are in the park. If at all, I only go to the park when the kids are at school.

I used to think it was like an unwritten rule, like you gotta start regular...then yer hoping for the switch mongo, which I don't aestheticly like. It's damn awful. But we know the shoulders. That's the key but then I'm muggin some bouls shoulders and totally missed the switch bigspin. In summation I agree.

Usually pretty easy to work out someone's stance but I do remember watching the whole of this and then about 30 seconds from the end realising that he was actually regular, then watching it all again straight away. I think the first line threw me off

Feeling the need to keep skating on the DL at my office.  On Mondays guys talk about golfing, tennis, cycling, ultimate frisbee, softball leagues, whatever.  I'd never bring up skating.  Also in my neighborhood, there is a fenced in basketball court with smooth ground and a few benches I bring my dogs to on weekend mornings.

I live in a pretty nice neighborhood in a big city.  I can skate and the dogs can run around.  People look at me like I'm crazy with a board.  I've also made it a point to never wear anything that says whatever, "Skateboarding" on it.  Meanwhile all the soccer moms and golf dads are wearing Vans.

In any case, why would the Spanish term end up spreading worldwide and basically replace the real trick name?

the word for 'three' in italian is 'tre'. also the case in danish, swedish and norwegian. not sure why you insist on spelling it like "trey" when i've never seen that printed in a magazine, on SLAP or really anywhere else.

People that brag about tricks and stuff. Usually those who brag really poorly execute the trick, and that bothers the hell outta me. If you can do it great, no need to lie about it if you can't. (who are trying to impress??).

This guy I used to always see at the spot would bend the truth alot. "Oh yea, I can switch bs 5050 the ledge, did it last time, but cant today" and so on...Quite annoying. And the same guy would beam the hell outtas ya when he lands a trick. So annoying. If I wanna see you skate, il watch you, dont have to stare at me once you have landed your trick.

Used to get really bummed when everyone was filming all the time. Like no fun sessions it seemed, always on a mission for their edits. Some poeple were horrible, litterally film everything they do, and put out cool parts, but hey, if anyone tried the same trick over and over while filming them, wed all have pretty decent parts.

Over waxing isnt my fav either. Skate a little faster.

Other people at the spot

Iíd rather skate a shitty curb alone than deal with the public at a killer park... but thatís just me

This is probably a dumb pet peeve, but I kinda dislike a park that is a heavy mix of street and transition. I prefer it to be one or the other.

Like a local park got built with a great street course and just enough qps and corners to make a run out of it. But then there's like this ultra massive bowl too, tall and steep. Like do I bring pads to this spot or not.

It's a glass half full thing I guess, but I see it as they could have used that concrete and labor to add more cohesive stuff, and made a park without an identity crisis.

Embellishing your life events whenever introducing each other.........

I had a bmx character at my local park awhile ago went on a longwinded tangent about being hooked up by Dave Mirra like cool dude so can you ride that whip or can you STFU?

Guy was just riding around and busts a few wimpy tricks as he's put on some pounds since his knee surgery just I find it very irritating when someone brags about shit no one asked me about

He bailed out after vibing others out with his incessant talking,

I know I know I do a lot of babblings online especially this forum but if we've ever met at a park/spot I'm quite meek and reserved unless we really know each other.

Anyone who sits on the ledge when thereís plenty of benches that have coats and other shit on em. MOVE.

Cigs and spit at the park. Fucking gross.

Painted truck hangers and grip should always be itís natural color.

Big no no riding deck company wheels. Let wheel companies handle that one. Donít like seeing it on a complete but I get it. My first had Blind wheels and they were awful. Anyone remember Lifetakers??

I get the no board company wheels and colorful grip but what's up with the colored truck's? I don't mind it as it's not something I am looking at if I do sand it off with Brillo pads.

Anyone seen or mentioned when skateparks get taken over by "Learn to Skate" classes?

I know a few guys that go skating on certain days and times as that is all they have to roll, but there always seems to be the Learn to Skate class that ends up taking over the whole park when they are there and they say it is just easier to leave than try to skate around them or in another area.

I feel their pain, but understand both sides, as I used to help run events for Councils going back almost 20 years, so would have to come in and use the skatepark, but would always try to not make a fuss of it and not take up any more of a skatepark than was needed so others could use some of it too.

It might be different in a lot of places, but "Learn to Skate" classes are a booming trade around here, it would seem.

What used to bug me and what drove me to quit doing that was even though I might turn up an hour or so earlier just to have a roll, the kids for the lessons would usually be there too and want to learn things right away, and it was not like I could ignore them, even though I wanted to scream "Leave me alone, I just want to skate!!!!"  Often the same for after the lessons, so I would have to go to a different park to have a skate without them.

Boo hoo you might think, but there is my peeve.

The other day we had a shit load of scooter kids and my first board sessions, I wasnít feeling it at all.

Couple of rad dads with kooky D3 reissues and their little squirt of a boy learning dropins but couldnít figure out how to pump on a quarter.

About 20 minutes in Iím over it.

At 20 minutes I think you have put up with it about 15 minutes longer than others I know.

That said I do tend to skate the carpark of my local more than the skatepark sometimes as the total area is not that big but when half a dozen scooter or bmx kids do laps, it is just not worth it.

I would rather take my chances with moving cars than moving scooter kids any day of the week.

local PUBLIC park gets closed down in the mornings summer/december for "skate camp". pretty peeved about it, especially since mornings were the best bet for avoiding crowds/kids. in the evenings its jam packed with kiddos too, so its kind of a playground now. just another reason why park skating sucks i guess but not a lot of street spots in the area.

Dudes who overwax shit at the park, to the point I even mentioned to the dude who slipped out on a ledge behind me how slick it was to a point of being dangerous, guy looked at me and said yeah Iíve just waxed it. Dumbfounded I skated off, only to see dude with a brick of wax going over it again.

I just cannot skate there because every single piece of metal seems to be so over waxed these days, but I am old and just cannot skate the park like the kids do these days.

TLDR: Jaded cynical Instagram rant.

Is anyone else fucking tired of this ethos that seemingly runs through the younger generation of having to film every single trick they do and post it? Learn a new flatground trick? New post! Do the same trick in a line with another flatground trick you already posted? New post! Fuck it run it back in slowmo? New post!

Not to be on the high and mighty shit because I'm complacent too; I use IG, I post on it semi frequently etc but when I do post it's pretty much just footage where the trick was challenging for me or it's something that hasn't been done on the spot before. I know with social media a lot of people love the validation of it all and dopamine receptors going off when they get likes or whatever but there's just something irksome about seeing people posting flatground kickflips when I know for a fact they're capable of so much more than that.

Then there's the whole other aspect of it where the clip is "sketchy" and there'll be some apology about it being sketchy for x excuse - if you look at it and know it's sketchy, and you're evidently not happy with it, why post it at all? Or the classic "sorry for not posting" type of shit.

I like Instagram, it's great to be able to see whats going on in the scene when you can't be there, what tricks are going down and it's a good communication platform but fuck me is it irksome sometimes.

I tend to not post skate stuff on the gram, cause I feel it so 'look at me' and trying to impress people. But in a weird way, Id like to post a few things. I just dont.

But I dont have an issue putting some of my skating on here. Really weird.

When dudes who post phenomenal skate content on their Instagram stories sprinkle in constant selfies. Jahmir Brown is the worst offender but the list of pros doing it isn't short.

This one is also minor but I hate getting hugged after a trick if the person is sweaty. Skateboarding collectively going back to fist bumps is my 2021 trend prayer.

You know that concrete a frame ledge ish thing like a marc johnson obstacle but the face is like a china bank? Parallel to the ledge and flat bar
Cunts usually leave it alone re wax and itís so fucking fun to skate. Makes a lovely sound too, I love that thing

I think itís those figs leaving their greasy sheen on the concrete that makes everything so fucking icy, bracko was slippery when it opened but nowhere near paddo

Posting too much skating/every little things kind of puts me off, too.

Like anything in life, there is a balance to be found with using social media in any way, and that certainly applies to posting skating in my opinion. Pros and such who are asked to do so obviously get a pass, but even then it seems unhealthy sometimes to share so much. I'd be happy with fewer posts from even the likes of Ishod... the onslaught only serves to weaken the impact of the clips, blah blah blah, it's been said a million times, but I believe there is truth to the cliche argument.

I have some younger skate friends who are coming into their own as adults and really figuring out how to manage this, and I love to see it.

pretty common complaint but for the past 5-6 months ive been living in a small ass country town with no real street spots so the local park is really all ive got. I try to go early but by 8 am the first wave of scooter kids show up and they literally all split up so theres at least one scooter kid in each section of the park....i can live with that but these guys are old enough to be aware yet they have zero regard for anyone, me or my buddys wait patiently for these guys to be done there little run and attempt to go and these clowns always seem to just stand or wait right at the ledge or whatever it is we are going for....so frustrating. I guess im not use to it cause i generally dont skate parks alot but its the only option here, thank fuck ill be back in sydney soon enough

I recall seeing some pro or spono kid shooting his board into those types of kids at a park, thinking that was a good way to get rid of them at the time, but then feel guilty afterwards because I am soft.

Some parks I have been at and even trying to run events, those sort of kids just get in the way, sometimes even with angry parent backup, so I find the best option is to have a chat to them and try to politely but firmly explain and help them understand the park etiquette or how a skatepark works.

Failing that, I know some guys will just charge at or through them and they get the idea to move or be rolled, but I would usually think that is not such a good way to go.

i'm sure scooter kids everywhere are bad, and this is based on nothing but a hunch because i haven't skated outside australia - i think we have the worst scooter kids in the world. i try to be nice and do the park etiquette explanations and some of them are receptive but most of them have the wildest attitudes. i used to be a lot more bugged by them, but i've come to just have fun with them and use the park as a gauntlet instead of a normal skatepark. when you're used to your local {i've skated mine for 21 years this year} sometimes the most interesting line you can take is the one that is forced by a scooter kid getting in the way - sharp unexpected turns and just surfin' through 'em. it's kinda cool.

i just wish they were humble and didn't think they were killing it when they're doing nothing, actually took turns {at least amongst themselves - it does my head watching these goobers come up a ramp that has 8 people standing on top of it. then just turn around and stand if front of them all and go again to do the same back and forth line where they do NOTHING}. most of all, i just wish they didn't say "GOING!". i wonder what child started that? it's really hard to get through to them that it's not necessary to indicate vocally if you are going to drop in or whatever.

Brisbane / Logan there seem to be parks where the scooter kids are cool and others where they are not, or even different groups that are ok or others that are clueless.  I recall kids getting mad because we all stood with our boards ready to drop in when they were doing their thing, then even when I explained that is exactly what they were doing to us, they still looked at us like we were speaking a different language.

Good times!!!

I have mostly given up and if they seem like they are competent enough on scooter and itís clearly just a pack of them just hogging the fucking park I will snake on principle. Sounds arsehole but itís just physics, they would probably be the ones to go flying

That said you can tell for sure when itís just a kid with no idea, I say hello to the proper little kids or if theyíre camping out on the deck and not sure when to go I would yell out go mate go itís all you

I kinda gave up years ago. Times have changed and most of us probably got reamed by some older bloke or blokes and learned to give respect to get respect but Iím not about to be on some fucking YouTube clip going of at kids

I legit know blokes that solo film at skate parks and start screaming if kids get in their way
It looks so bad, proper cringe shit, please donít do this guys

Prince, I think youíre right about aus scooter kids

Lmao one of my first skatepark memories is toombul and watching some kid get rolled for his 3.30 so the older cunt could go get a tallie

Fuck I remember that well gimme my three bucks thirty cunt Iím gonna fucken dip if I donít get a drink cunt and then youíll be fucked

I remember wearing my dc shirt down there and some guys like what size is that and I told him and he said fuck yeah Iíll have that. Dude saw I was fully about to cry and heís like man Iím kidding

They were cool to me though, wouldnít let me smoke bongs with them or anything said I was too young
And thatís where I got my fear of needles, too

I wouldnít want my kid being around that crap at all so maybe itís good times have changed

the line down the middle of the grip, or leaving a bit of the tip of the nose exposed when putting on grip. but the worse is when both are combined. Liked it at first but now, not so much.

Fake no complies. You know, when the person steps off with the front foot but then also lifts their back foot off the board to pop the tail. Gotta keep that back foot on and master the pop. Itís all one motion.

grip tape art where the user trys too hard
kickflops - the board gets ghost pop, does a quarter shuv and front foot goes completly off the side without making contact with the griptape

Colored wheels I really really hate the way they look especially manual flip tricks where the filmer is seriously close to them.

Think Theotis Beasley Bake and Destroy Bones multicolored 100's or black wheels if it's that shitty spitfire yellow I can get by but the rest for me are visually repulsive.

All black grip, white or off white graphics inside, Allen bolts, Big stickers over wheelbite spots.

When a well-filmed video is posted, someone advocating for its format always says "This is evidence that [HD or VX] is the only way to film skateboarding, the other option is dysfunctional and decrepit/zoomy and stupid"
