Hey what’s up everybody?
I’m trying to get a small run of decks going and want to offer different sizes. As I don’t ride smaller than 8.5, I don’t have preferred dimensions or shapes.
What has been your favorite length and wheelbase on an 8.3 or 8.25?
How about shape and concave?
Thanks in advance ✌️
-
I bounce back and forth between those two sizes. I'm not too picky about wheelbase but I've become quite a stickler for the nose and tail being big enough. I like companies like Quasi and FA that are doing the real squared noses and tails, but I can deal with it being rounded as long as it's roomy enough like an Anti-Hero or something. I recently set up an 8.25 that was really tapered like a football shape and I couldn't deal with it. The nose and tail felt tiny even though the board itself was still an 8.25.
-
I skate 8.38” and I prefer 14.25” these days. I use to skate more tranny back in the day and my choice was 14.38” then. My 2c.
-
Fav dimensions was an FA, 8.25, 14.12 WB, BBS made. None of the class photo series or slick. Just plain black with a sick pink layer underneath the top black coat that came through over time.
-
Woodshop I was talking with said, 8.25 and 8.5 are the most popular sizes going out the door. I ride.
8.25
-
As a general rule, I like wheelbase to be the width plus 6". 14" on an 8". 14.25" on an 8.25". 14.5" on an 8.5", etc..
-
For larger decks I've found a shorter wheelbase is ideal: 14 - 14.25. Like an 8.38 with 14.25 or less flips soooo good.
At the end of the day shapes are personal preference but props on the market research to try and find out what the majority of pals want

I'm really fond of the NHS 8.3s with the short WB, same for DLX if they ever fucking make them...(and I mean before covid)...but prefer the tapered 8.3s from NHS, gives you the width bit doesn't feel bulky.

Are you talking about the Anti-Hero range? Would love to ride one of those 8.25 x 31.775 x 14.15

DLX 8.38/32.25/14.5 suck ass if you get one with mellow kicks
legit feels like dog shit for skating ledges higher than a foot or scoopy flip tricks
pretty good for tranny tho

Baker 8.25 to die for

Im also a big fan of FA/Hockey/Quasi 8.25 decks. I actually wanna try one of the FA slick decks but im worried its going to be crazy heavy. Id say my other fave is Real 8.25 Full SE's.

Cool. Thanks for the help everyone ✌️

Giving this a quick bump cause I think it's relatable.
Are Alltimers 8.3's seem closer to an 8.25 or an 8.38? Trying to pick my next board and there are two Alltimers I'm loooking at with that size and with Thunder 149s I'm adamant it wouldn't work well if it's close to an 8.25.

What did you have before?
8.25 boards used to be skated with 149s a lot before the 144 / 148 trucks came into being, but it just comes down to how you like the board to sit - wheels just under or wheels just on / over.
I feel like that shape is the smaller one, but there has often been some confusion as to which graphic to which board shape, so someone else might be able to give a better answer.
The 8.3 even is a smaller one but most would be 8.375 or 8.38 (although some places will list them differently) so it would be good to work out dimensions, if you cannot see it in person.

Usually when people say 8.3 they're referring to an 8.38 but honestly its insignificant enough that it wouldn't matter (3 hundredths of an inch) and 149s on an 8.25 is fine as long as you aren't skating like mini cubics or something anyways.
-
I'm riding a 8.28 Real right now, the Julian Stranger shape, 14.12 wb, just perfect
-
(soz annoying Q's)Been looking at this madness shape board basically since the brand started but never seen one in person. https://www.skatewarehouse.com/Madness_Eye_Dot_Deck/descpage-MDEDDK.html
Anyone had one, thoughts? Does it taper more than it looks? Thunder 149s alright?
-
Whatever South Central does with 5Boro or Morning Bell works for me. I loved the older (2004-2010) Real shapes and Hopps when they were with Chapman as well. Also, whatever PS Stix did to Alien boards during the Mindfield days was absolute money (only PS Stix I ever liked)
Basically:
- Classic popsicle with a bit of taper
- Wheelbase no more than 14.25
- Steep tails without being crazy long, nose has to feel longer than then tail when riding the board upside down (must be fairly steep as well)
- Medium to fairly steep concave without feeling like an Element board from 2000 (felt like riding a salad bowl). Can be a bit mellow as well, just nothing that’s close to flat.
- Most important of all: STIFF WOOD. I hate floppy-feeling boards (PS Stix and the last few BBS boards I rode pre-pandemic)
No blunt/square nose, I can’t stand those.

I just put an 8.1 will Marshall on venture 5.6’s(8.25) and I think it worked well. Axel nuts from top I couldn’t see.

Currently skating an 8.44 Hockey with 14.18" wheelbase. Normally an 8.38 guy but that size intrigued me.
Trying to lock in on an 8.38 with an 14.25" wheelbase. That seemed to have worked best for me in the past.
Interesting tip! Thanks.

I feel like many BBS 8.38 boards have a 14.38 to 14.5 wb, but some brands that often have shorter boards / wheelbases might be a go, such as April or Primitive.
Even the AH blue eagle which is supposed to be 8.5 at the widest is often more like 8.3 tapering down, but the other DLX / AH shape 8.4 x 32 with 14.25 wb might be just the ticket for you, as it is a really good shape, decent width, but not as wide as the other DLX 8.38 size boards with the wheelbase you want. It seems there is always one in each AH catalog nowdays too.
As far as other woodshops, HLC has everything on 14.25 wb in most sizes, PS Stix often has 14.25 wb on their 8.375 or similar boards I have seen. Dwindle has the 8.375 boards with 14.25 wb.

Scumco makes a great 8.375 with a 14.25 wb. Generator wood I think?

Alltimers uses the same generic BBS shapes used by Killing Floor, Hopps, passport, Sci Fi, etc. and it is identical to the DLX 8.25. It also varies just as much depending where it was in the press. I ride this shape a lot and it's great. At one point I was coninvxrd they were different but I traced 2 new ones on cardboard and measured them with digital veneers and a feeler gauge and they were almost identical.
So ya- BBS 8.38/DLX 8.25 are probably the most skated shape there is right now and while a brand wouldn't be unique to use it they'd probably sell more boards to nerds that want to know dimensions.

The DLX 8.25/14.38wb is the best deck ever made in skateboard history.

Have. Hated it. Too stubby/short for me.

I was skating 8.38 for awhile but I could never find a big enough nose for my liking, I went down to an 8.25 clutch blank I believe it’s the K7, I bought a set of blanks off chapman, I like them cause of the huge nose they have, that’s really my only thing I like to have a pretty big nose, I’m 6ft, I can adjust to different wheelbases, after a couple sessions if I can nollie flip it I’m hyped

How tall are you ? I'm 5'10 I think, 1m 78 exactly

Same here, prefer bigger fuller shapes for my 8.25/8.38. WB can either be 14.25 or 14.3x. I can't stand tapered/pointy shapes.
Thing is I like 8.3s with both WB, super rare to have 8.3 with shorter WBs tho, on average.

Not that one but I have the square 8.37 x 31.6 shape and I hate to admit it's one of my favorite decks in the entire quiver. Mines the mild concave mid kick mold, not sure what that one is. I skate it on Thunder 149 hollows and its perfect. I've been skating it as a wet weather setup for months just to try and kill it and it still feels great.
-
I jumped back on a (and just ordered another) Santa Cruz 8.28" X 31.83" x 14.19"WB (it's a true 8.28, unlike the DLX 8.25" labeled as an 8.28").
For a short'ish WB board, it doesn't feel like one and as for width, it feels like what you'd expect, a bit larger than an 8.25 but smaller like a true 8.3 (which few make anymore), setup with 149s and it feels great. It sort of fucks with my head because it's right in the middle of my favorite sizes. It's a very full/rounded shape. If you like the '8.28' DLX but feel cramped as I do on it, check the SC out.
-
Does SC make multiple steepnesses? I think half of what keeps me from branching out to Dwindle wood is shit like that racking my brain when I kinda know what I get with BBS.

They have a couple diff molds but the one I see most commonly in that size is the standard one which is pretty steep. If you mostly skate BBS stuff you'll probably be fine with it. They're epoxy though so there's likely gonna be a bit of an adjustment period just in terms of weight and stiffness/feel. They're not my cup of tea but if you like stiff decks they might be yours. Good luck!
-
I really liked the Crail G052 minus the wheelbase and it felt/stayed stiff

SC keeps it pretty simple, very consistent med kicks (but a tad steeper than most BBS), mellow-medium concave. Creature is where you find a different concaves from medium to their 'classic' whatever that is supposed to be.
As BFRD mentioned, they are stiffer than a bbs/PS board and have a different feel overall, not as much flex (but they do eventually); pop lasts longer than BB and waaaaay longer than PS; be warned: skating anything else after will feel and sound waterlogged/sogged out.
One thing about DSM/NHS you can count on their dims being 100% consistent board to board/run to run. Without fail. Everytime.
This is my goldilocks 8.28 (It's usually the Henry Gartland shape RIP). They do make an 8.27 with a 14.22 WB (https://nhsskatedirect.com/products/8-27in-x-31-83in-guzman-dine-with-me-pro-santa-cruz?variant=42402514927773), nose and tail are shorter, no idea if it's the same shape).

The 8.28 Henry Gartland SC deck I rode held up really well, 4 weeks of hard skating. More taper to the nose but way less than the Tom Asta Taper Tip. Did feel a bit thinner / more flex than a DSM R7, less aggressive kicks and concave than a DSM R7.
Just setup a R7 8.25 with steep kicks and mellow concave, that's a really nice shape after it get broken in after 3 sessions. The first few sessions were hell on my feet and the pop was impossible to get the timing on.
