Title: FLOAT ON
Post by: doublesteveburger on September 03, 2020, 08:05:10 PM
My friends and I coined the term ‘float on’ when bands we love have that one song they’re batshit famous for but you personally can’t stand. Obviously this term came from Modest Mouse’s ‘Float On’. Was curious if anyone on here has that band they have an affinity for but can’t stand their popular bop.

Might make for good conversation and maybe getting into a band that you wrote off due to their Float On.

While I don't necessarily dislike the songs, James and The La's are both worth a listen beyond "Laid" and "There She Goes" respectively.

When I saw Modest Mouse a few years ago I could see numerous people sort of slinking around looking incredibly bored until half way through the set they played "Float On". As soon as the song finished I watched at least 15 people straight up just leave.

Considering how much better nearly all of The La's material is as well, it's kind of annoying people only really play There She Goes on the radio. The BBC sessions tracks were pretty dope, too.

I'm a huge B Boys fan, so personally it's the Beastie Boys and 'Fight For Your Right'. I didn't grow up when they blew up, so maybe I don't have the same connection for that era of B Boys like some do that are older. I just think the rest of their material + 'hits' were 10x better than that song and Licensed to Ill in general.

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

It's not that I necessarily dislike the song, it just doesn't sound much like a Smiths song to me. I always imagine that it's a song from an 80's one-hit-wonder who just asked the Smiths to put it on a record to get some exposure for them. I skip it when it comes on in a shuffle, but there are times I will choose to listen to it and will enjoy it.

I like Float On.

Would Circles by Soul Coughing be considered in this category? That was a popular-ish song, and while it's pretty good they have a ton of other much better songs.

I’m takin notes here, also kind of silly but I wrote of Nirvana in my youth because I hated SLTS constantly being thrown in my face. It wasn’t until my mid twenties that I actually gave them a chance and was genuinely surprised.

So glad to see Soul Coughing mentioned on this forum.

There are maybe 4 Hot Snakes songs I think are wonderful and I can barely listen to the rest.

It's Oh So Quiet by Bjork. Love most of her other stuff bit can't stand that song

Imagine by John Lennon. It's not that I hate the song, I just can't listen to it because I've heard so it so many times. It's kind of corny too.

I used to not like How Soon Is Now but I've come round and dig it now.

if you listen to How Soon Is Now with earphones you get to like it much more I think. That constant channel switching or drone causes a good response.

i like float on

for me jane's addiction is probably the best example with jane says and been caught stealing

metallica is probably a pretty good example also where the popular songs are far from the best

I think Float On is a pretty good song when compared to other radio hits that it sits alongside. But I know what you mean.

It was pretty late in life when I realized that DEVO kicks ass and there's a lot more to them than Whip It.

Whip It was the first song that came to mind, but I actually like that song too. DEVO is the best band of all time, but some of their albums are stinkers.

I bought the Semisonic album with “Never You Mind” because I liked that song in the Best of 411 vol.5 Contests part and everyone who ever spotted that CD in my collection has given me shit for having the “Closing Time” album.

Wouldn’t say I hate any of these tracks, but they are far from their best.

Holiday in Cambodia, California Uber Alles, and police truck by dead kennedys.

One armed scissor by At the drive-in

Everything by AFI after Black Sails in The Sunset.

Bastards of Young by The Replacements.

these are kind of like lesser examples of this. songs that are still good but far from the best by the band.

Tempted by Squeeze and pump it up by Elvis Costello

Both are great songs but I feel like a lot of people have never really bothered to listen past them.

I'm guilty of never listening to anything else from Squeeze, but as for Elvis Costello my aunt is a huge fan of his so I've listened to hours on end of his music.

I thought of one just the other day, but it is more of a producer thing: Tricky produced a Britney Spears hit, and I can't stand teen-pop so theres that, but the catalog of music that Tricky has made is way too good to discount.

I forgot this thread!

Wonderful is maybe too strong a word but I really like:

Six Wave Hold Down
Paid In Cigarettes
Unlisted
and uh... there are a few other ok ones. Plenty For All?

Phoebe Bridgers’ “Kyoto” is my current Float On nominee. I’m really digging that song but nothing else on that album reaches 2/3 of the BPM of that track. Textbook F.O.

Late to this, but I just found it interesting that James are known for Laid. I always thought their Float On was Sit Down.

Alien Ant Farm covering Smooth Criminal

Besides that song getting overplayed, the rest of that album (Anthology) was solid as fuck.

Talking Heads - Burning down the house. Not exactly annoying but one of my least favorite tracks by them. I could maybe say the same for once in a lifetime but no, that song is dope even though it's one of the only talking heads songs you'll hear at in public/on the radio

It's a great album and all, but I never need to hear a single note of Dark Side Of The Moon again.
