Title: Skating with glasses
Post by: FrozenIndustries on October 08, 2020, 02:07:21 PM
I wore glasses when I started skating but switched to contacts shortly after and never attempted to wear them on the board again until this past spring when I ran out of contacts.  For whatever reason, I felt like it slightly improved my skating but I stopped once I got more lenses.

My contacts have been really nothing my eyes lately and I am currently trying to make the permanent switch to glasses. Had them fall off the other day and have been rocking a Croakies strap while I skate.

Anyone skate in glasses long-term and want to share anything noteworthy about it?

I skate in glasses all the time. I always wear a cap because it keeps them on way better. They still fall sometimes but I got pretty good at catching them

I just started wearing contacts after only wearing glasses for my whole life.

A few things I’ve noticed about skating with glasses that I get a lot less shit in my eyes if I’m wearing glasses, but I generally skate better with contacts because it’s one less thing I have to worry about.

But, regardless of skating better in contacts I’m hella self conscious because with out glasses I look like a hammerhead shark. But with glasses I look like diego todds creepy uncle, so it’s a lose lose for me. But I’m sure you’re better off.

Every summer I am reminded that Fall and Spring are so much better for bespectacled skating. Depending on the fit of my glasses, sweat pretty much acts as a lubricant that helps them fly off my face constantly.

I started wearing croakies this past summer, they help but I feel somewhat self conscious in them, especially with short hair. I feel like I have a rat tail when I catch a glimpse of myself in a shadow or a mirrored object.

Theres no plus side besides being able to see, I have never been able to see to well with contacts but I should get some honestly.

I started wearing glasses maybe a year ago, most of the time it’s i don’t notice them, sweating through summer is a pain when I get drips on the lens and the worst slam I’ve ever taken was while I had glasses on, shook them and the beanie I had in clear across the lot

I always wear glasses when skating. I also can´t touch my eyeball so contacts are out of the picture for me.

I am using these rubber hooks to keep them on my face. In case of a severe slam they will still go flying but for mild cases they will stay on.

The most annoying shit about skating in glasses is when they fog up.

I also have to skate in glasses since contacts aren’t an option for me.  I’ve actually never skated without glasses.

Wish I had some thrilling story to share, but it’s just sort of a long-running, uninteresting comedy of errors: fog and sweat on lenses, slipping down the nose, falling off on slams, scratching lenses.  Those hooks look very nerdy (no offense), but I think I need to get some too, haha.  I already look like a huge dork, so I think the rubber hooks might actually help complete the look.

Best advice on can give a fellow glasses wearer: Once they start to slip off from skating just go to any eyeglass place and ask for an adjustment cause over time frames expand around your skull. Will keep them from coming off even when slamming. Also always opt for the insurance on them. Never know when they’ll come off your face skating and get replaced.

Preach. Warby Parker replaces your lenses if you scratch them within a year, but I haven't tried doing this with severely scratched glasses from skating.

As someone else in the thread mentioned, frames slipping down your nose is a huge pain. I feel like I have a permanent scrunch on my face when I skate and it makes me look like a jerk.

Wear my old pair when I skate so it's not as bad if they get scratched. Also wear a cap, I feel like that helps hold em on... I also have a chain rope thing, like old guy style. That helps and. Looks really cool!

Sick, glad to know a few other people on here skate in glasses. I just got a new pair and they fit really nicely...haven't had to wear the Croakies but might anyway just to not fuck them up. I want to try those hooks too.

Nah, I look like an idiot no matter what. But yeah, weird that I feel like I skate better in glasses, maybe because the frames block my peripheral vision so I am not contactly being distracted.

I don't miss my glasses at all. I had laser eye surgery done while I was in the navy for free. I absolutely needed them at night skating, but without them, my aim was off. It kept slipping off/around my nose.

Been skating in glasses for as long as I can remember and am used to them sliding down my face because no matter what temp I'm a heavy sweater. Just the other day they flew off my face when I ate shit in the bowl and now my lenses are scratched pretty bad. Isn't the first time it's happened either. Just is what it is...I'll take scratched lenses and frames over a broken/fractured bone any day of the week.

I've got straight up coke bottle, bubbles level glasses. Had to stop wearing them because they're too expensive and just too god damned heavy to stay on. Have contacts that I skate in but pro tip for when I did skate with glasses:

Only slightly less nerdy than those rubber-reach-around snails other homie posted- but rubber bands on the ends of the arm works wonders. That along with a tight cap usually does the trick.

The reality is when you're skating- you're going to get sweaty and glasses are just going to fall off. For me, I had to choose between bs flips and glasses and I chose the former.

Anyway, some companies make the leashes with gold chains and shit, bling your shit out!

I don't think the VA does. The navy docs that did my eyes worked on all the jet pilots and navy seals so I could trust them.

I started skating in glasses after just getting too lazy to put contacts in every time, it's not that bad really if you've got a pair that stay on your face ok. Got laser eye surgery last year though. It's definitely worth it if you can afford it. People with good eyesight don't realise how lucky they are just to be able to see properly

I skate with glasses more often than not. They usually stay on surprisingly. Sometime sure, they’ll fly of, but not as much as you’d think. Only on a really bad slam. Plus they are already so scratched up, I don’t care.

I’m sure a lot of it depends on the frames and how they fit though.

Not ideal, but I try to keep an old or beater pair on hand. I've found glasses with a matte finish tend to stay on a bit better.

I had to wear a pair of those jawns for a couple seasons of little league and it was mortifying haha.  I’d have to avoid all mirrors while wearing them so I didn’t have to be constantly reminded that I looked like King of the Mole People.

I really wanted to go so I ditched my glasses and dressed up as Bill Laimbeer so I could go and my mom wouldn’t be too worried.

I’ve always worn glasses skating with almost no problems. Occasionally if they are an older pair they will slip off but there are cheap rubber straps you can get at Supermarkets or pharmacies to hold them on. Also helps to have extra pairs at home if they get smashed. Zennioptical.com has cheap, decent quality glasses for super cheap (also where I got my goggles that I mentioned in my other post).

They fog up a lot these days when I’m wearing a mask, but overall it’s not too bad wearing them.

skated with glasses since i started again in my 30s... doesn't bother me at all, and it's far less hassle than snowboarding with glasses under goggles, which i did for 15 years.

Only had them fly off once or twice in 2.5 years of skating, and I can see where I'm going, win-win.

Wore contacts for ages but it sucks especially if the place is dusty or you smoke or you're out till late.

I wear glasses now but I need to always be wearing a cap or a beanie otherwise they slip away with sweat.

I also bought that thingy to tie them like herpes JoJo used to do but it's easy to lose / break and makes you look even more like a neeky dingus.

I bought a cheap pair from Zenni specifically for skating that I just keep in my car or skate bag. They were $15-20 and stay on decently well unless I take a decent slam and I never really worry about them. If they break, I'll buy another cheap pair.

i dont like it, it makes me think about not moving my head certain ways so they dont fly off, which causes me to lose focus. i dont think you need to see that badly to be honest. tons of stuff in skating is blind anyway, you are sort of just looking at the ground to know when to start sending.

I can definitely skate better when I can see and i have a new pair that is really tight fitting to my head. But its so easy for them to fly off when you start sweating, i dont really see the point. need to get proper sport goggles like bob burnquist imo if your vision is really that bad. i am not like that guy that needs the cane by any means but i cant read text thats like 2 feet away from me.

I’ve been skating with glasses for the last 16 years or so. I’ve had them fall off maybe 5 or 6 times. Croakies or similar definitely help but I always lose them switching back and forth with prescription sunglasses.

Agreed. Normally happens just as I’m setting up for something. It’s not annoying at all rolling up to the coping and having a huge drop of sweat plop right in your line of vision.

this totally! Without glasses I have zero depth perception, I don’t know how but when I was a teenager I skated non stop without glasses. I just got used to that feeling of popping a Ollie and feeling the front wheels already be over the stairs, now at almost 40 I need every advantage so I got contacts and it’s been absolutely a game changer for me! Glasses just did not work for me in Oregon, always fogged up the second I went in side plus all the water on them when it was raining.

Skating and wearing glasses since the age of 7 here.
Starting in high school and through my 30's I wore contacts.
Then they started getting uncomfortable and the hassle of taking them in and out was too much.
So I've been skating in glasses again for the last 5 years or so. With a Croakie strap.
Then about 5 months ago I slammed and completely destroyed my glasses.
Since then I've been back on contacts.
I'd love to get some Lasik and get these eyeballs fixed once and for all.

Hah! BCGs... I remember trying to tell myself I looked like Rev. Run. Wishful thinking.
My vision can't be corrected with contacts, so yeah I go Full Horace Grant when skating. Rec specs, elastic strap, the works. They don't fall off or break. Do I look cool? Well, that was never going to be an option, glasses or not.

Also... The Oakley frames with the straight rubberized earpieces that wrap around the back of the head stay on really well. Got those for less hectic applications when I don't need the Horaces.

It's a pity that you broke your glasses; I hope that this will not happen to you again. I usually only ride with glasses on, as I order special holders for myself so that they don't fly off my nose while I'm riding. I'm not comfortable wearing lenses, so I have no choice but to wear glasses. Sometimes it's uncomfortable, but in most cases, I don't even notice them and don't feel any discomfort. I have special polarized sunglasses for driving (https://www.sunrayeyes.com/collections/best-polarized-glasses-for-driving/products/sunray%E2%84%A2-night-vision-photochromic-polarized-glasses-nh1) that I also wear while riding, and they protect my eyes from glare, which is also very convenient. Be careful when you ride next time, and I think you will be fine.

I've been experimenting with skating without glasses the last few days and it's working out quite well. I legally need them to drive and to see life in HD so I'm practically always wearing them. I thought I needed them to skate for depth perception and all that. Turns out I have a lot more confidence not worrying about breaking my only pair of glasses and I also look like less of a fucking dork. My favourite glasses are bent to shit from getting sucker punched so I've been sporting these super ugly and partially too big looking $60 Clearly frames and just couldn't take it anymore. Best decision I've made lately apart from switching to cupsoles.

I've got astigmatism and started wearing glasses around three years ago. I tried out the glasses from a guy I studied with and was like woah, better get these eyes checked.
I wear them mostly when I working on the computer hours at the time, and sometimes when I'm out and about.
I can't wear them while skating though. I can't determine distances while in speed, and my timing is totally off..

my glasses get more fucked up from messing around with friends than skating which is sort of surprising, it's kind of amazing how my face just seems to attract footballs and lacrosse balls

Stores will not adjust your glasses unless you paid for their overpriced shit. If you bought them online you are basically fucked. And what, you never slammed so hard they went flying off? I've had that happen a handful of times and even fell face-first on a pair and bent/scratched the fuck out of them.
