Boomer started this one? Go figure.
I appreciate how 'beyond' Arto seems. Plus, he make skateboard really, really good.
-
Saw him skate Dortmund in 2001ish. He clearly was a step above the other pros. Head high switch’s 360 flips and back lipping everything. Al with such a smooth style.

What's crazy to me is how much work he put in such a small time window.
Did he blow up in like 1999? Same year he got on Flip? Then filming for Menikmati (2000) and Really Sorry (2002) at the same time. While doing some of the gnarliest tricks ever and almost dying.
That guy is nuts. And to me he was one of my first "idols", because he was the closest to a "local" pro that I had. Being from Estonia, Finland is about 2h boat ride away, finnish language is similar and we have the same national anthem (melodically, the lyrics are different).
So seeing even the Finnish flag on the boards, even the mustard graphic that he had, it was nice seeing something in skateboarding from this part of the world, so it made us also feel a lot more connected to the skate industry.

My friend's girlfriend had a huge crush on him, got a pair of his eS shoes. Him leaving eS for Etnies was a weird move but Gravis and NB afterwards were good moves even though it was short lived.
Always love his Mindfield ender, my BS tricks are horrible but I made an effort to learn BS 50s and Lipslides after seeing him do it in that part. Ranks right up there with Heath Kirchart and Ethan Fowler's BS Lipslides.

I wish gravis was still around.

I first remember seeing him skate in 96, so he was 14 or 15 at the time. It was wintertime at an indoor park in Tampere, Finland. We're from Helsinki but at that time Helsinki didn't have a park for the winter, so we travelled to other cities to skate. My friends had been to his hometown of Seinäjoki that had an indoor park and met him. We were older, around 20 and my friends were fuzzing about him like "you gotta see this kid from Seinäjoki skate, he's here today". And he did skate with such ease that I don't think I had seen before. It was special.
Pretty soon he moved to Helsinki to skate and by then it was amazing to watch him and hear about him annihilating all the spots. Constantly stepping to spots no one had skated before. Learning new tricks all the time, it seemed to be so easy for him and he was loving it. He was well on his way then and in summer 98 he went to all the European constest and blew up.
-
I passed his board back to him at a demo once in like 2006-2007. He said thanks. I didn’t feel worthy of touching his board or his politeness.

Picked this up on eBay a few months ago, thought it was a beer logo until my Finish friend mentioned it was a mustard brand.

I own his Thrasher crooks cover issue. It has a full interview with pictures including that back lip boomer posted. I'll scan it in and post it up this weekend if I remember

I somehow ended up with 3 of this issue in my collection. I was really into Flip at the time and that Flip hoodie he has on in the beginning of the interview, I wore like every day. I always skated Boulala's board cuz 7.63 was my jam. I had Flip shirts for every day of the week I think, lol. Es Arto shoe was the shit, that was probably my personal peak in skating around that time.

Thanks!
The anatomy one is gnarly, I don't blame him for stepping away from being a pro skater after the multiple concussions and broken bones.

That front board footage is so cool. He's going so fast and flies off of the rail

Love that photo, remember my mind being blown the first time I saw his Mindfield ender, immediately tried learning BS Lipslides even though my BS rail tricks were non-existent beyond boardslides.

YES! Arto's Mindfield ender is magical. The graceful run up, his body positioning on that handrail, the lightweight form down the kinks with his board centered just so, then turning forward but leaning way back with the slight tictac- everything. The music and the mutilated insect toys crawling add so much energy too.

Arto and a couple of other pros talk about dealing with drugs and alcohol. Didn't know he was dealing with addiction a few years ago.
