Title: Stand up comedy
Post by: pugmaster on January 24, 2021, 08:34:14 PM
Stand up comedy is like pizza.  Everyone likes it.  Except assholes.

What I was thinking for this thread is that individuals post good standup sets OR other funny standup that has a non traditional format.

For example,

Traditional standup

https://youtu.be/MkydWp_5NgQ (https://youtu.be/MkydWp_5NgQ)

https://youtu.be/tDolNU89SXI (https://youtu.be/tDolNU89SXI)

Non-Traditional Standup

https://www.c-span.org/video/?123268-1/brain-droppings (https://www.c-span.org/video/?123268-1/brain-droppings)
Starting at 10:40 is when it begins to get good.

I think most stand up comedy is terrible, but I make an exception for Doug Stanhope.  Most of his shit is pretty good, and entertaining.  I like George Carlin as well, but I would rather reread Braindroppings than listen to his standup.

Tangentially related, but if you go back and watch old Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice Clay stand-up, (which I don’t recommend) is like being transported to some alternate dimension.  They never once say something even remotely funny but the audience will be doubled over, hyperventilating with tears of laughter streaming down their faces.

I’ve watched two or three of their specials and literally spent the whole time trying to figure out what the fuck I’m watching.

Oh man, I was born the day Sam Kinison died so I've tried a handful of times over the years to get into him but just can't.  I think the funniest part about it is how fucking terribly some of the shit he says has aged.

At the beginning of "Have you seen me lately" he starts off with a bit about how dumb drunk driving laws are, then went on to get killed by a drunk driver.  He has bits about AIDS denial and being anti-condom.  The "World Hunger" bit is based entirely off ignorance of the situation.  It's been at least five years since I've listened to him, I'm sure it's even worse now.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

That George Carlin link sucked me in, he even comments at the beginning "I can assure you I'm properly nervous... because this is a setting I'm not completely familiar with and as we all know anything new is to be feared and dreaded".

Chris Rock and Ricky Gervais as award show hosts roasted hard.

and Colbert dropping a WMD on Bush has got to be one of the greatest examples of punching up. Modern Jester.

Jesters could also give bad news to the King that no one else would dare deliver. In 1340, when the French fleet was destroyed at the Battle of Sluys by the English, Phillippe VI's jester told him the English sailors "don't even have the guts to jump into the water like our brave French"

Colin Quinn is a big one for me. Story telling, attitude, style etc...
His show Tough Crowd was innovative and all of his one man shows are so enjoyable for the combination of informative and insightful material.

Mark was pretty good awhile back. I actually had the pleasure of chatting with him a few months back and hes a true skate rat. He said one of his biggest accomplishments was landing a 360 flip down a 4 set clean in a line. I felt happy for him just hearing how he said it

Theo Von is uniquely funny in conversation. Recognizing him years ago after MTV's Road Rules was not encouraging but he really improved.

Did he avoid eye contact? He's funny about the social anxiety. Went deep wormhole on his podcast (Tuesdays with Stories) (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsE74YJvPJpaquzTPMO8hAA) with Joe List
Other notable skater standups: Dave Chapelle, Andrew Santino (Interviews Tony Hawk) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1q_RlehFkA), David Spade (he's got stories about skating AZ ditches and bad slams out on podcasts)

For a few months before the pandemic it was becoming a hobby to watch "good" open mic. Gave me something to do sunday evenings. $4 pints and a couple hours of the occasional cringe but it was invigorating to watch the process live.

Paul Provenza's (Green Room) (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeAssNUNNXkGVtRGLaWHgy02hEK8-KPiq) is another window into the standup world similar to Tough Crowd.

Hahaha he does have crazy social anxiety. But we just talked on the phone. Was a great chat! All he thinks about is comedy. Half the shit I said hed interject with "that's a great premise, or this could be a bit"

He kinda acts like an idiot at times, same with theo von, but I can tell you both are very intelligent

Also, how has nobody mentioned Mitch hedberg yet?

I don't know much standup but I'm stoked to check these links. Bill Hicks was pretty lengendary.

I've been digging Pete Davidson lately. I appreciate his openness in talking about his mental illness and that he reminds me of a lot of dudes I know and care about who are totally lost and/or dead

My dad raised us on early UK comedy like Jasper Carrot and Richard Digance.
For English comedy I've always thought Jack Dee is top of the pile.

Anyone here do any stand up.
My first gig was opening for a 10 person comp to 250 payers, I came second.

I also placed third in Raw Comedy once (interesting fact the dude I lost to went on to become Australian rapper Allday.

Stand up comedy was everywhere on US cable at the height of these dudes popularity and I just thought I was not a fan stand-up. The only thing I can remember liking form that period was a Jerry Seinfeld HBO special. Cut to a couple decades later and I started listening to the Best Show on WFMU and caught a lot of current stars on the come-up. I'm a fan of too many people now.

When clubs open back up and I get vaccinated, I'm gonna go try to get on at an open mic somewhere.

Ian Bagg was a solid first post. He had me with the crowd work and I think that skill can prove a comic's worth. Nothing worse than suffering someone reciting their "act" when they're incapable of ad libbing to fill the silence of a bomb.

That is a funny take in itself.

"In 1990, [Dice] became the first stand-up comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden for two consecutive nights."
His act raises the bar for peak attendance yet there are always some people completely non-plussed... not "I don't get it" but "what is this, why is everyone laughing?"

Dice's album "The Day the Laughter Died" (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUf1Tni_8bATYfwQR0bMC-A9lN-sj7WjQ) is a good counter-point.
Quote from: wiki (condensed)
'The concept was to record an unadvertised performance in a small club with a small crowd, many of whom would not necessarily be fans of Clay's act.'
'The album is largely improvisational yet, the jokes are delivered intentionally flat and raw as to offend and alienate the audience, turning the performance into the joke itself.'

Joe Rogan and Anthony Jeselnik mention Dice and Sam turned into the characters they played (https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=108&v=vd6A9OMLjM0&feature=youtu.be)
"Dice" was comedian Andrew Clay Silverstein before he pruned his act and became the character.

There's something interesting about Dice's crowds in the clip, they weren't laughing at the material anymore. They were "singing along" to the vulgarity. It reminded me of something Chappelle admitted about the decision to end his show, he could sense some in the audience were laughing derisively at the characters he was playing, they didn't get these characters were spoofs being mocked by Dave. Same with Dice's obnoxious crowd except Dave decided not to profit off it.

The only thing I can really tell people who are interested in trying it and never have is that you will be uncomfortable. You just have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I know that seems contradictory, but it makes sense if you want it to.

Also anyone who tells you for your first time "Oh man, just get drunk and go up there and just fuckin' riff" is an idiot and will never ever do any sort of comedy. The amount of times that has been attempted compared to the number of times its gone well is a wide margin. Just try to write a few jokes, even if it's 2 minutes of material and just go try it. You might bomb, you might kill, but most likely it'll be somewhere in the middle. If it's an open mic the odds are you won't be the worst one there anyways.

I like Stewart Lee. I guess layered, nuanced, and deadpan describe him best?

This is a random clip but it's representative of his other stuff.

I tried standup towards the end of college. My routine was kinda funny but couldn’t come up with new material so I gave up, but this was one of my bits:

“You know what’s the craziest movie I’ve seen? Office space...”

(Someone usually hoots at this point)

“You think fucking Inception was some trippy shit? (I sometimes said the Matrix instead) Nah nigga, Office...SPACE!!"
(Usually a small laugh)

(I would look for another black guy in the crowd)

“Fellow black man, what is your name?”
(If the dude has a regular name I would say “Otis?” he would of course correct me then I say “Oh you said Darius, my bad.” Usually the most guaranteed laugh I would get.)

“So Darius...have you seen office space? (Look around at the crowd) I have to ask, because our black movie lexicon is a little different...I mention Animal House around my niggas and they think I’m trying to buy some weed. (Big laugh) I was quoting Caddy Shack and my momma thought I was having a stroke (black people found this joke funnier).

“Anyways Darius let me tell you about Office Space. Some dude and his two friends skim hundreds of thousands of dollars from their employer, something fucked up so he was going to fess up but didn’t have to because the building burned down. Some printer gets fucked up, an Arab man breakdances, an Applebee’s subplot, it’s an amazing movie...but do you want to know WHY he fucked around and stole the money?”

(Black guy says why)

“Get this..........because he was Booooooooooooooored!!!!!”

(Big laugh)

“Why the fuck couldn’t this guy just get another job, his life empty so he gotta fuck shit up huh? What kinda bullshit is that!”

“Stick it to the man? He read the job description, he knew he was going to have work weekends sometimes, fuck outta here!”

“And this movie came out in ‘99, didn’t white people get rich off of domain names back then? Mutherfucker would  buy ceilingfan.com and get a cool 2 mil from G.E because fuck it, why not.!”

“But all them post OJ and pre 9/11 movies were about weird responses to nihilism though “we conquered capitalism now what!?...Tom Cruise in an orgy cult?! fuck it. Brad Pitt plays the personification of your violent subconscious?...fuck it.

Alright I’m out, next time I’ll talk about movies that make sense damn sense, like Belly! Peace Y’all. (Not a good joke to end on, because White people didn’t know wtf belly was)

Stewart Lee has a superb new interviews with Adam Buxton on his podcast.

Yea, the "just get up there and riff" is a pretty bad idea. I've seen people crash and burn using that idea, I've actually died on stage trying newer stuff.

I usually repeat the entire 5 minutes in my head for about 2 weeks until it's literally burned into my memory word for word.

Subsequently I can get on a stage and fire of maybe 10 to 15 minutes of material I pretty much know will land.
That's all you need, you can reuse the same part for ages, no one knows.

Mark normand, Kyle kinane, as mentioned... mark normand had a great special last year (someone posted above), both have great podcasts. Joe list (marks heterosexual life mate) also has a great special posted last year. Sam morril, in my opinion, had the best special of 2020.  https://youtu.be/4Xo3Fq7GGWk (https://youtu.be/4Xo3Fq7GGWk) .... he also filmed one during the pandemic on rooftops in New York... which is also great...  https://youtu.be/M0qDTYmaT-Y (https://youtu.be/M0qDTYmaT-Y) I hope those links work.... I will say, Shane gillis ( the cancelled snl guy) is probably my favorite comedian currently. I love his podcast, saw him live not too long ago and he crushed. Sorry for the long post...

Edit: also, for those who like basketball, Sam morril and stavros halkias (cumtown fame) have a great podcast. Pod don’t lie

I agree Sam Morril has great material!

Part of my intent for making the thread was to create a place where people could post whole sets.

His delivery is hilarious and well timed if you've got the timing you'll knock em dead.

Jimmy Carr is an insufferable pompous asshat, his humour is mehhh at best. TBH Only reason I'm trashing him is I had the displeasure of seeing him longtime ago in Dublin 2003 with a few friends and he roasted us for heckling him he got us good though but since then I've been like he's a prick.

No I don’t like him because of his show’s on channel 4 he reminds me of a British Steve Harvey boring bland and corny.

I guess it’s something about his demure is annoying. Plus he ruined what was my favorite show reunion by just being an asshat that’s just me though.

[close]

Oh man, I was born the day Sam Kinison died so I've tried a handful of times over the years to get into him but just can't.  I think the funniest part about it is how fucking terribly some of the shit he says has aged.

At the beginning of "Have you seen me lately" he starts off with a bit about how dumb drunk driving laws are, then went on to get killed by a drunk driver.  He has bits about AIDS denial and being anti-condom.  The "World Hunger" bit is based entirely off ignorance of the situation.  It's been at least five years since I've listened to him, I'm sure it's even worse now.

He's a comedian not an intellectual so it doesn't matter how ignorant he sounded. It does however matter that he wasn't very funny.

Middle of Somewhere with Chad Daniels and Cy Amundson is my favorite comedy pod. Cy has been out for a little while so lots of guest comedians have been on and it’s been a great way to find some new (to me) comics.

I’d love to give an open mic a shot, whenever that’s possible. It’s always been a dream but around the time COVID started I started trying to write and develop jokes in earnest.

Mr. "Cancel culture is out of control" is a hypocrite of course. These types have been complaining about this in one form or another for decades, e.g., shock jocks complaining about political correctness, comedians crying about oversensitivity, etc., but they are ALWAYS snowflakes and hypocrites when it comes to criticism of or jokes about themselves.

It is so crazy how many specials I see on netflix that barely make me smile.  Then there is stuff like this. Really good stuff.

Yes I liked this special alot. He would have been great on SNL: All the working class guys and rednecks he would have portrayed... When you see this special it seems insane that he was cancelled from the show.

So one time I took a tinder date to an open mic comedy night.  She was of Italian descent, and may have had just the slightest amount of dark upper lip hair.  Anyway, one of the performers went into this bit about women with moustaches.. it was so pointless and poorly delivered, I couldn’t tell if he was making it up on the spot, or if he noticed my date and was forcing himself through it because he had no other jokes to fill his time.  Either way, it was extremely awkward, and we never went out again.  Probably for other reasons, though.

holy shit, i didn’t think i was a fan of this guy .. seen him on some podcasts and he was funny but that special won me over .. the and one mix tape joke had me dying as someone that’s been to a few of those special olympics events

This was my reaction as well. I wasn't remarkably impressed with his material when I first learned about him (via the "controversy") but this was a great special.

Also RIP Norm. Absolutely one of the all time best. His set at the Comedy Central Roast broke my brain when I saw it.

Saw Annie Lederman and Josh Potter a few weeks ago when they came through town. I'd only seen them on podcasts, so I kinda went in blind. Potter was very good, I would definitely go see him again. Lederman was a little hit and miss, but I was in a good mood so I had a good time. I would see her again I think, I'm sure she'll only get better. They hung around to take photos, I took some with Annie but didn't even think to take any with Potter, I felt like a dick after.

is it implicit to not talk about the GOATs in this thread? it's wild to me to talk about stand up and not mention eddie murphy, seinfeld, chris rock, chappel, etc...

i watch this round table in the car today and found it entertaining. if you like comedians in cars it's a similar vibe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKY6BGcx37k

Tangentially related, but if you go back and watch old Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice Clay stand-up, (which I don’t recommend) is like being transported to some alternate dimension.  They never once say something even remotely funny but the audience will be doubled over, hyperventilating with tears of laughter streaming down their faces.

I’ve watched two or three of their specials and literally spent the whole time trying to figure out what the fuck I’m watching.

I just watched Dave Chapelle‘s latest Netflix special. I loved his four other Netflix specials and I was very excited about this one popping up on Netflix.

It is by far the worst special he has put out. It feels like a set in the early stages of its development. It reminded me a lot of that leaked Louis CK set from four years ago: a lot of politically incorrect insults without much self awareness or any type of new perspectives. Just shock for shock‘s sake. It seems he hasn‘t put much work or thought into it. He also seems to be very full of himself in the special, which in my opinion is usually terrible for a comedian.

I hope he just needed to get that terrible special out to move on to better things….

Stoked to see Ali Saddiq and Stavros fans on here...

There’s about to be many specials on the horizon because dudes have been working on materiel during the pandemic and not being to travel until recently.

Joe List had a special come out a couple months ago that kills on youtube. Paul Virzi just had a Netflix special come out recently that I haven’t watched yet but have heard good things about.

On the horizon I’ve heard Ari Shaffir has a special coming up soon, Ian Fidance as well, and Big Jay Oakerson in the next few months.

Also, I can’t think of any female comedians named here and with no thought off the top of my head Bonnie McFarlane, Kim Congden, and Ms Pat are the ones that pop up. Shout out also to Dina Hashem for that one roast battle clip that I can’t post at the moment.

You do stand up too? I had a fairly decent run for like 8 years or so but lost the passion for it the last few years. I've lost the desire to perform but I still write pretty much every day. I saw one of your posts saying that when you started doing comedy you stopped watching it. It was the same thing for me.

What market are you in? How long have you done comedy?
Title: Re: Stand up comedy

Yeah, I do. Haven't in a while now, just started putting my time into some other stuff recently. I'll get around to doing it again, been having the itch again recently. I've always written stuff and kept little notes for bits and stuff, similar to you.

I'm not like a full time comic or anything, just stuff in and around my city. Get booked sometimes for a paid gig here and there, but not anywhere near being a working comic. Started it like...6ish years ago? It's pretty fun, I always suggest people to just try an open mic if they have any interest in it.

Will always love the office, extras, life's too short, Ricky Gervais show both radio and podcast all the Karl shows even Derek and afterlife had good moments (altho that last season of afterlife shows he's got nothing left in the tank. It was basically just a redo of stuff he's already done) but his standup was always weird. Obviously all standup is a rehearsed one person act but his always felt really act-y if that makes any sense. A bunch of its even fucking prop comedy which can fuck right off.

I support Chappelle as a human with a voice and his skits could be great but his stand up was never great, although not offensively bad.  I detest stand up generally except for Andy Kaufman who is incredible and I've seen some good Richard Pryor.

Gervais never really felt like a true stand up comedian. Its like a one man play where the character is a stand up. Don't think he ever had to do ten minutes or work clubs etc. I do think he is funny just less so in his stand up mc grindah of people just do nothing is a straight rip off of David Brent but that doesn't really factor into stand up comedy

The other thing chapelle has over gervais is he’s actually funny. Have always found gervais jarring, too much punching down for me and not done in a intelligent or funny way like bill hicks for example. Either way fuck them terfs
[close]
Nobody is punching anybody dude its stand up.  Stand up isn't dangerous it just sucks 9 times out of 10.
[close]
Gervais never really felt like a true stand up comedian. Its like a one man play where the character is a stand up. Don't think he ever had to do ten minutes or work clubs etc. I do think he is funny just less so in his stand up mc grindah of people just do nothing is a straight rip off of David Brent but that doesn't really factor into stand up comedy
He was unnecessarily mean to Madonna imo but he fuckin got Tom Hanks and Tim Allen pretty good you have to admit.  But that was his shining moment and yah his stand up sucks from what ive seen since then.

... OR other funny standup that has a non traditional format.
While I think standup is usually a mix of prepared and improvised material for an audience expecting comedy, this is an example of a comic doing what comes naturally to them. They get in front of a crowd to tell jokes or be one for entertainment like she did here.

This video is the best version of the event including some news coverage of the aftermath.
I found an oral history of the event with lots of back story including reactions like this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBOsyEmPY4Y&ab_channel=ShellyMercurygaga

She starts singing in earnest but you quickly see she reacts to the sound delay which makes her smile. I think that was a moment her instincts started to kick in.
Later on she mentioned Johnny Carson's advice: not to start too high. She realized 6 notes in that the rest was doomed and wished she could start over but then thought
"what the hell, I'm a comic, I'm gonna make it funny cuz I way over-shot my wad here".
That's my favorite part, when she unplugs her ears and goes for it, determined to finish the bit.

that was really cool. It was fascinating that she seemed to really enjoy it that she had pissed everyone off. Her husband was scared and worried and she seemed really excited after the song. I would piss myself if ten thousand people were booing me at the same time lol.

I also think she meant to sing normally and then she just ran with it. Like an inner demon got triggered when she realized the sound was off. she couldn’t help herself to prank everyone.

I was listening to Band of Gypsies (live) and after a gut wrenching version of "Machine Gun" Jimmy super off handedly says, "Dedicated to everyone that's died and is gonna die (in reference to the Vietnam war that was happening), then he says, "that will give them hope" while chuckling.  Its super funny to hear it.

Chelsea Peretti had a special on Netflix called “one of the greats”. She sprinkles this gag throughout where the camera does the cliche cut to audience reactions but everytime it’s some ridiculous scene like a baby seated by itself or dogs. Cracks me up.
Sometimes it sounds like the laughter is purposely out of place or louder than it naturally is, I just liked how she put together a strong act and was able to make a joke of the “special” itself.
It’s annoying when the footage is edited to reassure a dumb home audience that “look, the butt of the joke is laughing, you can too”.

Hey folks, since getting sober in 2020 by getting back into skateboarding after 13 years as an alcoholic, I also got back into stand up comedy after a 5 year alcohol induced absence.

This past year I have gotten back on the road to building a career in stand up comedy and I am happy to say I have been having a lot more success now that I am sober.

I stopped skateboarding when I started drinking at age 16 and I have spent most of my adult life drunk and after getting back into skateboarding as a sober adult. I look at skateboarding a lot different now. I don't look at skateboarding as a sport, It's more as an art, the world is our canvas and the skateboard is our paintbrush.

Skateboarding saved my life and I am forever grateful for that, and I think what makes skateboarding so special is the incredibly supportive community. Most skaters cheer the success of each other, when someone lands something they have been working on everyone is happy to see them finally accomplish their goal. That is very special and is actually pretty rare in most other areas of life and feel fortunate to have grown up with such a community.

I just saw this thread and thought I'd leave a post with some of my stand up comedy for anyone who is interested in supporting a fellow skate bro working on accomplishing a goal. (a like, comment, subscribe, or follow goes a long way!)

I hate to be this douche asking people to follow me but unfortunately social media platforms are a big part of having a career in comedy now days so here I am.

Here's a clip of me making a few 8 ball pool jokes while repping EMERICA x CREATURE on the stage of the San Francisco Punchline.

I watched Ari Shaffir's "Jew" and it was so boring and un-funny I had to finish it in three separate chunks. I laughed twice, maybe three times. But everywhere I look (reddit, YT comments) people are saying it's the best special of the year, a masterpiece, totally great... And I really don't get it? It feels like a bunch of Jewish people are on a mission to talk this special up or are astroturfing because a fellow Jew put it out, but the whole thing fucking stunk. Have any of you watched it?

Going to see Joe List in January, over the past few months I've become a Tuesgay and am very much looking forward to the show

Ari came to Oslo with the "Jew" show back in 2018. I won four tickets in a contest arranged by the booking agency. Sooo fucking happy I didn't spend any money on it, because god damn that shit was awful. Ended up leaving before it was over. I've seen all the praise he has gotten after the recent release and I don't understand it either.

i really love comedy, been a life long fan every since seeing eddie murphy delirious when i was a kid. my wife and i go see shows pretty often, it's our favorite date. i'm guessing my age is showing or something though because i've been watching a lot of the stuff posted here and other than SBC, didn't laugh at all. maybe comedy is super diverse now. shows we've see over the last few years

- chappel
- amy schumer
- sienfeld
- chris rock
- bill burr

got tickets for louis ck

it was interesting to take my wife to bill burr, she went in finding him annoying and came out saying it was one of her favorite shows of all time.

i think the issue might be that i like story teller type comedians except sienfield and seems like a lot of the stuff shared here is more self depreciating and observational.

He's 100% his own animal. I guess if I had to compare him to anyone it would be Chappelle Show era Chappelle, at least when it comes to the sketches. Bold, risque, extremely smart and subversive. Dude, just watch him.

I'm a pretty big fan of his so this isn't meant as a criticism, but I think his stand up delivery/style is often reminiscent of Louis C.K., and his sense of humor on the podcast sometimes reminds me of Kenny Powers from Eastbound & Down. I'm sure he'd admit they're both big influences on him, so it's whatever.

And yes, he admittedly said some unsavory words in that podcast clip that got him cancelled, but the bit genuinely was basically a satire mocking how white people used to think of asian people as less than human.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but tbh I only found like half of the G&K sketches I saw funny.

Yes, I liked it, too. A lot less bad politically incorrect jokes („I say this edgy thing just, because I can“ type jokes), than in the last one. The last „gay sperm“ joke was like that, but I laughed a lot through out the rest of it.

The Chris Rock special wasn’t as bad as I expected.  Several times he’d veer towards the exhausting out-of-touch-rich-old-guy-vs-cancel-culture bullshit.. but then actually say something kind of funny.  I just really wish the media would stop glamorizing cocaine so much lately… because it makes me really want some but I can’t.

Not sure if this belongs in the stand up or podcast thread.. but I recently discovered Kill Tony and it’s definitely entertaining.  Maybe not so much the actual standup, but the absolutely ruthless and very not-PC roasting that ensues.

Can you link a choice episode?

I’ve caught clips and it didn’t hold my attention but, according to OP’s intent of the thread “…standup that has a non-traditional format” this fits right in so I’m interested.

(Rock’s special is another return to greatness.)

I’ve only listened to a few recent ones on Spotify while at work, and tbh they’re all pretty similar.. but the one with David Lucas and his daughter Luna was pretty good iirc.  Him and Hans Kim are definitely my favourite regulars.  William Montgomery is the only one I find too annoying/over the top.

Chris Distefano played here last week, and a ton of A level comics are starting to tour here. Comics are finally realizing my city is a huge market.

It's obvious you chimed in because you wanted to dogpile and now you're doing a little "oh! is he any good? describe him!" bullshit to backtrack because it's not 2020 anymore and nobody cares to join you in your little attempt at a finger-wag/dogpile. Shane’s fav comic is Louis ck, you can see the influence for sure. But as someone said, he’s his own monster. The stuff he said that led to his firing from snl was taken waaaay out of context. He did come up in Philly but started picking up steam with all the nyc guys (big jay and soder helped him a bunch). His podcast is one of my favorites, and his special “live from Austin” (posted above) is top 10 for me all time… maybe top 5…. Also, I’ve had friends see him recently running his next hour and they said it’s funnier than Austin. Let me know if you want a couple episodes of his podcast as a rec.

That’d be good.    I read about the SNL and saw he even apologized for the weak original apology which made me like him.   Sometimes you just grow into comedians.  I used to not dig Andrew Santino when he felt like a Chris Delia clone, but he’s been growing on me lately and seems a better dude for (presumably) distancing himself.   My comedy podcast world is kinda centered in the LA improv scene, so I don’t hate breaking out of that

Saw the king himself Shane Gillis last night and it was unbelievably great. Had to buy resale tickets over 100 bucks each but absolutely worth it, I encourage anyone else to do the same if he comes to your city
[close]

The guy who got booted from
SNL for making hack Asian jokes?
[close]

yep - that whole situation was probably the best thing to ever happen to him. well, at least he made the best of that situation. he is unbelievably funny. check out his sketch show Gilly and Keeves.
[close]

Who would you compare him to?
[close]

dude, you're in a stand up comedy thread in 2023 and you're asking people who Shane Gillis is??? Why are you here?  Gonna bust out some sweet George Carlin and school everyone?
[close]

no, bozo, I know who he is.   I was wondering what comedians he was like.   Only heard of him bc of the SNL controversy and haven’t seen him release a special anywhere, but I’m glad you’ve massively overestimated the reach of whatever podcast you’ve heard him on
[close]

He's on every podcast and is touring the world.  You want people to describe him to you like you're actually going to listen to some of his stuff? It's obvious you chimed in because you wanted to dogpile and now you're doing a little "oh! is he any good? describe him!" bullshit to backtrack because it's not 2020 anymore and nobody cares to join you in your little attempt at a finger-wag/dogpile. Nobody cares. Go try and be outraged somewhere else.
[close]

counterpoint - i was being polite to people who regularly post on slap and seeing if he was like any comedians i like.  I'm not into that who robert kelly/big jay oakerson nyc comedian crowd or the theo vonn/segura/burt kreisher people either, so if I had unfairly lumped him in, I was going to check him out.

but i appreciate the opportunity for someone who doesn't post on here a lot to make a big stink out of an innocuous exchange
[close]

lol you know what you were doing, and it was not "being polite". You were parroting things you heard years ago, and then began backpedaling to save face when everyone didn't agree with you. Classic.
[close]

Everyone can read the exchange and see you completely misrepresent the conversation.  Not really sure why you decided to start posting on slap just to take this stand on a pretty benign discussion.

I decided to start posting on slap when I got broke off riding my skateboard. You can try and say you came here in good faith looking for recommendations! Go for it. All I see is a dude trying to drum up a good 2020 dogpile in a comedy thread, and failing.

Have fun with that post count. You seem to really value post counts.

Love Kyle Kinane! His pod with Shane Torres, No Accounting For Taste, is a fun listen too.  Looking forward to seeing the new Shane Torres 60 minutes as well.

Also, not always the biggest fan of TAFS, but Nick Mullen is a fucking genius, and knowing Jamel Johnson, it appears he got them all ripped before filming...

I'd just like to echo the four or five before me that said Stewart Lee. Stewart Lee. He's exceptional.

My brain is fried at the moment, but some other good ones that spring to mind are James Acaster, Paul Foot, Tommy Tiernan (very different to Stewart Lee though, and to each other). And there's a guy on Twitter and Instagram, Alistair Green, who is superb. Not really standup comedy per se, but close enough.

His stand up is decent but I would say Nick Mullen is the funniest comedian at doing podcasts etc by a thousand miles. Nobody can even come close to his impressions, bits and riffs but it's like he purposely has to do horrible subject matter to hold himself back. The Adam friedland show is ok but it really accells when Nick is on

I appreciate how he regularly takes great risks. It is sad how so many people do not have the ability to understand that the overwhelming majority of comedy is non-literal. It pains me to see so many individuals just waiting for something to be uttered that warrants cancellation, rather than taking it all in and considering the context. Bill is great.

I caught a Stavros Halkias set the other night. He was very funny! Most of his online presence since leaving Cum Town focuses on crowd work, but he really didn't do it that much. Just lots of good bits. I saw Mullen a few months ago as well and felt like they had similar amounts of crowd work in their sets.

I think most comedians just share crowd work so it doesn’t burn material they’ve written, but I do hate how a lot share it as “Comedian Vs Drunk Karen” or something like that

Bill is so amazing and my esteem has only grown in the wake of Chappelle and all these dudes who HAVE to weigh in on transgendered people, then have to make a goddamn stand over it when people might not agree with their 50year old asses.

Bill has that rare ability to poke and prod the line from both sides but really present it as acting without malice to any one side.  He’s a bastard but never a cunt.

I watched fellow skater Mark Normand‘s special on Netflix yesterday. Definitely worth a watch. Some killer, some filler. I like his old timey style. He seems like an autistic guy with Tourette’s.
His take on identity politics making him more racist was pretty bad: Just because it was real easy to pretend not to see race twenty years ago doesn’t mean there was less racism… his holocaust joke was pretty gnarly too (not very funny either IMO). I am German and if you made that joke in Germany you would get sued for sure. It is hard as hell to make a good holocaust joke. Kudos for trying.

Free speech in Germany is much more limited by what is called "human dignity" than it is in the US. All these laws were put into place after Nazi German was defeated and the main objective of the Allies was to prevent another fascist dictatorship.

In Germany you can reference the holocaust, but you cannot deny it. In a way racist speech is also punishable by law.
There is a paragraph in the  German Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch) called "Volksverhetzung" (Incitement of masses), which limits free speech. Mark Normands joke where he compares the the burned corpses of holocaust victims to old black people with dry skin ("ashy"), could be ruled as "incitement of the masses", because it might be ruled that he "denies or downplays an act committed under the rule of National Socialism". I am shure if he was German and made that joke, he would definitely get cancelled and he would get get sued. If they'd actually be able to commit him of that crime, I don't know. There are similar cases where judges have ruled in favor of freedom of expression/freedom of art.

This is the whole section from the German Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch):

Section 130
Incitement of masses

(1) Whoever, in a manner suited to causing a disturbance of the public peace,

1.  incites hatred against a national, racial, religious group or a group defined by their ethnic origin, against sections of the population or individuals on account of their belonging to one of the aforementioned groups or sections of the population, or calls for violent or arbitrary measures against them or

2.  violates the human dignity of others by insulting, maliciously maligning or defaming one of the aforementioned groups, sections of the population or individuals on account of their belonging to one of the aforementioned groups or sections of the population

incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term of between three months and five years.

(2) Whoever

1.  disseminates content (section 11 (3)) or makes it available to the public, or offers, supplies or makes available to a person under 18 years of age content (section 11 (3)) which

a)  incites hatred against one of the groups referred to in subsection (1) no. 1, sections of the population or individuals on account of their belonging to one of the groups referred to in subsection (1) no. 1, or sections of the population,

b)  calls for violent or arbitrary measures against one of the persons or bodies of persons referred to in letter (a) or

c)  attacks the human dignity of one of the persons or bodies of persons referred to in letter (a) by insulting, maliciously maligning or defaming them, or

2.  produces, purchases, supplies, stocks, offers, advertises or undertakes to import or export content (section 11 (3)) as referred to in no. 1 (a) to (c) in order to use it within the meaning of no. 1 or to facilitate such use by another

incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or a fine.

(3) Whoever publicly or in a meeting approves of, denies or downplays an act committed under the rule of National Socialism of the kind indicated in section 6 (1) of the Code of Crimes against International Law in a manner suited to causing a disturbance of the public peace incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or a fine.

(4) Whoever publicly or in a meeting disturbs the public peace in a manner which violates the dignity of the victims by approving of, glorifying or justifying National Socialist tyranny and arbitrary rule incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or a fine.

(5) Subsection (2) also applies to content (section 11 (3)) as referred to in subsections (3) or (4).

(6) In the cases under subsection (2) no. 1, also in conjunction with subsection (5), the attempt is punishable.

(7) In the cases under subsection (2), also in conjunction with subsections (5) and (6), and in the cases under subsections (3) and (4), section 86 (4) applies accordingly.

I am shure if he was German and made that joke, he would definitely get cancelled and he would get get sued. If they'd actually be able to commit him of that crime, I don't know. There are similar cases where judges have ruled in favor of freedom of expression/freedom of art.

You would know better than me edit:(regarding german culture) but I would assume it's easy to prove these are jokes performed for comedy, its purpose is to incite surprise not hatred.

The language of the law gives me the impression there must be a degree of sincerity when talking about the holocaust.

We understand the seriousness of bodies burned, audiences "laugh" when he compares it to the vain concern of dry skin.
It's the vanity being mocked not the deaths.

Could be the same joke he goes for about piles of shoes, the stereotype that black people collect expensive shoes for status / the nazis collected shoes at their death camps.

So I don't think he's sincerely equating the two to downplay the atrocities, he's just using severe juxtaposition with macabre imagery.
I appreciate the depth of your post. Did my take change your perspective on the perceived butt of the joke?

My favorite part was the right wing weather report: “… Praise the lord! No back to you Sugartits“
[close]

I'm curious about these restrictions, are you not allowed to reference the holocaust whatsoever?
[close]

Free speech in Germany is much more limited by what is called "human dignity" than it is in the US. All these laws were put into place after Nazi German was defeated and the main objective of the Allies was to prevent another fascist dictatorship.

In Germany you can reference the holocaust, but you cannot deny it. In a way racist speech is also punishable by law.

I never thought the butt of the joke were victims of the holocaust or jews. I agree one hundred percent with your perspective. I couldn't have it explained as well as you did. The absurdity of his joke only works, because people are aware of the horros of the holocaust. A bit like in that curb your enthusiasm episode, where a holocaust survivor argues with a guy who's been on the reality show "survivor", about who had it more difficult.

Yes, the holocaust always has to be talked about sincirely in Germany. You do have to remember, though, the holocaust took place here, our grandparents generation organized it, supported it or at the least just tolarated and ignored it.

My local skatepark is next to the European Central Bank. When they decided to build the Bank there, there were alot of debates if it was OK to build it there, because it had been the sight of alot of deportations to nazi death camps during the Third Reich. They ended up building the bank and next to it a small memorial sight to remeber the thousands of local citizens of Frankfurt who were deported to camps from there. It is now basicly a small plaza with marks of train tracks in the ground and some signs. It is a nice little plaza. During Covid people started to meet there for salsa parties. Just a group of middle aged people who tried to keep some distance and dance to salsa music. People noticed them and there were complaints that with their dancing disrespected the victims of the holocaust. This started a debate and in the end it was decided that it was illegal to dance there.

The fact of the holocaust is at the core of modern German identity. There is no way arround the holocaust if you identify yourself as German. Generally most democratically minded Germans try to educate themselves about it and keep the memory of the victims alive and identify with "being a good and enlightened German" that way. Nationalists argue that it is time get over it and find a sense of pride in the nation without "the shame" of the holocaust or they will outright deny it ever happened.

I recently I watched a documentary about Isreali kids being taught about the holocaust and visiting consentration camps. They were confronted with the horrible pictures of all the tortured and starved dead bodies of people from these camps to learn "This is what people did to us". Kids at German schools visit the same concentration camps and see the same image to learn "This is what we did to them".

On a lighter note: Curb your enthusiasm - Survivor vs. Survivor.

I love Joe List. I saw him live a few months ago and he killed harder than he did on that special. He explained on Tuesdays w/ Stories that they didn't edit the special down enough and it was too loose, I gotta agree. This Year's Material was waaay better

Saw Shane Gillis a few months ago, too. Was the best stand up/live performance I'd ever seen. Didn't fuck up one line or stammer or anything. Everything was killer. It was like watching a virtuoso. The dude is fantastic and his performance was a sight to behold.

That Gillis special was really good although it’s kind of freaky hearing someone talk so Philly on TV.

I guess there was some kind of schism in the Philly comedy scene when Shane was canceled from SNL and I had two skate friends on either side. The guy who stuck with Gillis (who worked at my old local skate shop and was funny as shit) ended up as his opening act.

Jordan Jensen has been popping up on the adam friedland show and a few other bigger podcasts. didn't really know of her until last week or so, but decided to check this special out she released a few days ago.

it took me like 10 or so minutes to catch her vibe, but man, she's reeeeeally good on stage. definitely got her own thing going on. this one is worth a watch.

Specials great, she’s still a rookie to comedy too. Wait until she really gets in her stride.

Rich Voss (The Legend) has a special coming out on Tuesday under the same platform and Kurt Metzgers came out a couple weeks ago if anyone are fans.

Gonna catch a couple shows with her and a whole lot of others at Skankfest Vegas next week, I can’t wait.

I don't keep up with KT on the regular. I've been watching the show since it's infancy, but I have found that it has gotten terribly mean spirited over the last year or so. There's a fine line between roasting someone and being MEAN for mean's sake.

He's touring with William Montgomery, David Lucas and kam patterson too. I've gotten a little tired of them on kill tony but their sets were incredibly better than what you see on kt. William was probably the best out them which surprised me

@matt_2993

that's rad that you got to see all those dudes on one show! a good friend of mine's favorite comic is William Montgomery. I don't really care much for David Lucas. I find him to be kind of one dimensional, but I haven't seen his act or a long set from him, and I haven't seen enough of Kam to say if I'm a fan or not. What was his act like?

There was a comedy festival going around about 10 years called Oddball, and I went to the Tampa date. I ended up meeting Jeff Ross and Tony after their sets. I told Tony that I loved KT (this was around the time that they first started the show,) and in Tony fashion he just goes, "thanks... it's my favorite thing to do," real sly, but he was very friendly and so was Jeff Ross.

Big Jay hosted the second stage and he was the highlight of the second stage, for sure. I was able to meet him after too, and again, he was just super cool and very gracious.

My wife got us tickets for Gillis at the local club in Baltimore, before his theater shows that he’s doing the weekend he’ll be here.  Not expecting much I’ve heard him say he only has like a solid 30 of new material.  He’s still funny as shit.

Two years ago we saw TJ Miller and I wasn’t expecting much, but he was hilarious, and I liked his new 30 minute special he put on YouTube a few weeks ago.

Had tickets to see Joe Derosa, back in October, but got the flu that weekend.  Heard he had good sets.

Also wanted to peep Ali Siddiq, but the price of the tickets for the basically dining room of a venue he’s playing in Baltimore made me pass.  Love his stuff though.

People are still dicey about Louis CK, my friend won tickets before his cancelled thing, we were 3rd row center at that show and one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Anyway guess I’m a basic comedy bitch now, just listen to YMH pods, Burr, Normand and Lists pods, Sickler’s is always entertaining, Bobby Kelly, etc.  Shit helps with my work commute and it is like therapy since I can’t skate as much as I want/how I want these days just because of work and getting older.

I saw a YouTube short from Anthony Jeselnik on Joe Rogan's podcast and was unaware of an unreleased special.

It is not as great as his other specials, but it is definitely worth listening to. Allegedly, he performed this on September 9th and 10th before the tragedy occurred on September 11th. It is very dark, which explains why he/they decided to not release the special.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyMV7b151bs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyMV7b151bs)

I'm a big fan of George Carlin and feel this special is interesting to view as it is an insight to his thought process of a comic as he became increasingly misanthropic at the end of his career.

Saw Anthony Jeselnik and the power went out midway through his set. He ended up finishing on some backup amps after a 20 minute delay. Fucking great shit, a master at work. His opener Dina Hashem was very good, too.

Saw Sam Morrell also. He killed it but then went into some crowd work toward the end, and I fucking hate crowd work. Twenty minutes of hearing one half of a conversation, or if the audience member is talking loudly enough, a way too drawn out story/explanation of who gives a shit. Almost ruined the whole show.

Any aussies like Sam Campbell?    He’s on the UK Taskmaster wearing Ishod’s and I’ve seen him wearing Pass~Port in sets, so it seems like we might have another skater stand up

For me he's good in small amounts. There's a big amount of Aus comedy that's just like stupid/wierd for the sake of weird stuff I really have to be in the mood for to enjoy. I keep meaning to watch his full specials but never get around to it so would be unfair to judge too much.
I've been wondering if he skated for a while I noticed the ishods on taskmaster and he did something in the last ep that made me think he def at least had some connection but now can't remember what it was.
I think passport is also just very involved in a lot of Australian, especially Sydney creative people. I think some older videos would have Donny Benet music and here's a clip that features Sam Campbell
https://youtu.be/qh74fm-FGFo

https://youtu.be/D4KZF_uZM2Q at 4:50 he has a sketch with a character called Rhys Grogan. Rhys Grogan was a Sydney skater in the early 00s so I'm gonna guess Sam's connected to skating

I saw him alongside Tim Key and Simon Amstell last month. Had never heard of him but he was definitely the funniest of the eve and a crowd favourite. I could see how it might not transfer over as well to TV but in person he was fucking hilarious

He’s soo good on Taskmaster I think and you can tell that the hosts love him.   Agree that the kind of comedians that show up on celebrity corner of 9 out of 10 cats do countdown (I’m American so no idea if that’s lame to watch hah) might be Best in small doses

Not to be all Al Madrigal but does Steve-o's comedy consist of jokes or is it him doing on-stage antics and recalling the times he horked an earthworm ?

I once asked a coworker where the best food was in the town and he said "Panda Express" and I feel similar apprehension anytime I ask people (people I don't know) if the comedy they appreciate would be the comedy that I appreciate. props to @fineslime for ye bravery

he's not doing traditional stand up, no, but he's also not doing stunts on stage. this special is basically him introing bits he filmed. some solid laughs so far and there's a definite shock factor to it. I'm halfway through and the bits are getting pretty fookin' gnarly. people passing out during the show. basically what you'd expect from Steve-O.

check your PM.

My buddy told me about cum town maybe 4 years ago now, right before they really blew up, but I just couldn't get into it, mostly because of Stav and his laugh. I also didn't really get what they were doing. I've become a big fan of TAFS and think Nick and Adam are great together. I've been able to go back and listen to old cum town bits and find them now to be hilarious... podcasts are weird. you have to warm up to the hosts as people, not just as comedians.

can't wait for the special.

Would like to fly on the wall wherever Shane Gillis was chosen to host.
He seems like someone who should be the musical guest that’s rising in mass public awareness as a niche standup/podcaster.

Maybe he’ll end up on Dana carvey and David spade’s snl themed podcast.
Looking forward to some behind the scenes commentary.

Yeah thinking on my choice of “niche” , I think he’s got enough recognizability to earn the gig, I’m just surprised they invited someone I recognize as primarily a standup/podcaster. And that’s kinda niche to me.

I’m not a fan of most women comedians but Kim Congdon has been has been on the top of my list since I saw her on roast battles in 2018. She kills it whenever she’s a guest on a show and I love her new special.

I watched it but might not be the best judge as I've never found SNL even remotely funny. His opening was kinda ruf seemed like the crowd just did not want to play along, even the band was barely giving him anything. Sketches were all whatever I didn't laugh but can't say that was Shane's fault he did as well as any actor I've ever seen on the show.

I can't get enough of Dr Phil.  He hosted another Kill Tony and has a great appearance on the main NYE night that Shane and Matt hosted too

Same. So good. I even like it more than Adam Ray’s non-character bits. Apparently he will have Dr. Phil as a guest in the future

Supposedly Adam is gonna do a new character on kill tony in March too.  As long as it's not that annoying lisp character thing he sometimes does, I'm sure it'll be solid knowing it has to stand up against Dr Phil

What a fail allowing a drunk Nick Swardson leave the stage. It’s like wanting a fight to stop at a hockey match.

Bummer to see. I’m not even a big fan of his but I saw this set in Irvine about a month ago and it was one of the best shows I’ve been to. The Jason Statham bit killed.

Dan Soder kills in this. I didn't realize how good he was on stage. I've laughed hard many times and I'm 15 minutes in.

edit: just finished it. easily one of the best specials in the last 5 years. this one is up there.

Thanks for the recommendation! That was so well polished and executed. I feel like I see him crushing it on podcasts but haven't seen much of his standup so this was very appreciated.

Here is a brief clip that made me a huge fan of his:

Just watched this last night and I had tears from laughing trying to explain to my wife about the Enrique song and the 9/11 video after I looked it up.

I know him more from Billions, but he had a great HBO special and then this really opened me up to him.   Does not seem like someone who should crush impressions as well as he does

yeah man... I knew he was good at impressions/ voices but the way he blended them with his act shows how just how talented he is. he is very subtly performing his ass off and making it look very easy.

He used to co host with Jay Oakerson many years for their Sirius show Bonfire until he left almost a year ago. He claimed he couldn’t work throughout the week and also write/work out new material at the same time. There’s a lot of comedy gold on those shows if you’re a fan of his humor. Was bummed he left but if this is the product that comes from that I can’t complain.

Now that I’m thinking about Soder was one of the first guests on AYG and that episode got me locked into that show from day one.

Just watched Kippys special (one half of AYG) earlier and I don’t know what else to say but I love it. It’s great, kinda like watching a Ronnie Creager part… wish it didn’t end.

Wish I had a Netflix account to hear Dave’s special. Listened to Skanks for the Memories and 20 years later still makes me laugh. Damn, I’m old… anyhoo, just heard Eleanor Kerrigans special and I love it, never was on my radar until I’ve watched/listened to some podcasts where she’s been pushing it the past month.

Fun fact, she was also a wrestler for WOW which I forgot was even a thing.

Maybe I should just be happy for whatever Dave I get, but that felt a little half-assed.

Also, noticing a lot of specials have been 40 mins lately and not a full hour.   Maybe a YouTube thing?
