Tangentially related, but if you go back and watch old Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice Clay stand-up, (which I don’t recommend) is like being transported to some alternate dimension. They never once say something even remotely funny but the audience will be doubled over, hyperventilating with tears of laughter streaming down their faces.
Jesters could also give bad news to the King that no one else would dare deliver. In 1340, when the French fleet was destroyed at the Battle of Sluys by the English, Phillippe VI's jester told him the English sailors "don't even have the guts to jump into the water like our brave French"

Mark was pretty good awhile back. I actually had the pleasure of chatting with him a few months back and hes a true skate rat. He said one of his biggest accomplishments was landing a 360 flip down a 4 set clean in a line. I felt happy for him just hearing how he said it

Did he avoid eye contact? He's funny about the social anxiety. Went deep wormhole on his podcast (Tuesdays with Stories) (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsE74YJvPJpaquzTPMO8hAA) with Joe List
Other notable skater standups: Dave Chapelle, Andrew Santino (Interviews Tony Hawk) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1q_RlehFkA), David Spade (he's got stories about skating AZ ditches and bad slams out on podcasts)
For a few months before the pandemic it was becoming a hobby to watch "good" open mic. Gave me something to do sunday evenings. $4 pints and a couple hours of the occasional cringe but it was invigorating to watch the process live.
Paul Provenza's (Green Room) (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeAssNUNNXkGVtRGLaWHgy02hEK8-KPiq) is another window into the standup world similar to Tough Crowd.

Stand up comedy was everywhere on US cable at the height of these dudes popularity and I just thought I was not a fan stand-up. The only thing I can remember liking form that period was a Jerry Seinfeld HBO special. Cut to a couple decades later and I started listening to the Best Show on WFMU and caught a lot of current stars on the come-up. I'm a fan of too many people now.Expand QuoteTangentially related, but if you go back and watch old Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice Clay stand-up, (which I don’t recommend) is like being transported to some alternate dimension. Oh man, I was born the day Sam Kinison died so I've tried a handful of times over the years to get into him but just can't. I think the funniest part about it is how fucking terribly some of the shit he says has aged.
At the beginning of "Have you seen me lately" he starts off with a bit about how dumb drunk driving laws are, then went on to get killed by a drunk driver. He has bits about AIDS denial and being anti-condom. The "World Hunger" bit is based entirely off ignorance of the situation. It's been at least five years since I've listened to him, I'm sure it's even worse now.
I’ve watched two or three of their specials and literally spent the whole time trying to figure out what the fuck I’m watching. That is a funny take in itself.
'The concept was to record an unadvertised performance in a small club with a small crowd, many of whom would not necessarily be fans of Clay's act.'
'The album is largely improvisational yet, the jokes are delivered intentionally flat and raw as to offend and alienate the audience, turning the performance into the joke itself.'
Also, how has nobody mentioned Mitch hedberg yet?
I don't know much standup but I'm stoked to check these links. Bill Hicks was pretty lengendary.Similar affinity for him. Ive got "Big Time Adolescence" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3PcDo4YcnY) and "King of Staten Island" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azkVr0VUSTA) que'd up, I think I'll knock em out tonight.
I've been digging Pete Davidson lately. I appreciate his openness in talking about his mental illness and that he reminds me of a lot of dudes I know and care about who are totally lost and/or dead
Joe list (marks heterosexual life mate) also has a great special
Ian Bagg was a solid first post. He had me with the crowd work and I think that skill can prove a comic's worth. Nothing worse than suffering someone reciting their "act" when they're incapable of ad libbing to fill the silence of a bomb.

"In 1990, [Dice] became the first stand-up comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden for two consecutive nights."
His act raises the bar for peak attendance yet there are always some people completely non-plussed... not "I don't get it" but "what is this, why is everyone laughing?"
Dice's album "The Day the Laughter Died" (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUf1Tni_8bATYfwQR0bMC-A9lN-sj7WjQ) is a good counter-point.Quote from: wiki (condensed)Expand Quote'The concept was to record an unadvertised performance in a small club with a small crowd, many of whom would not necessarily be fans of Clay's act.'

Joe Rogan and Anthony Jeselnik mention Dice and Sam turned into the characters they played (https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=108&v=vd6A9OMLjM0&feature=youtu.be)
"Dice" was comedian Andrew Clay Silverstein before he pruned his act and became the character.
There's something interesting about Dice's crowds in the clip, they weren't laughing at the material anymore. They were "singing along" to the vulgarity. It reminded me of something Chappelle admitted about the decision to end his show, he could sense some in the audience were laughing derisively at the characters he was playing, they didn't get these characters were spoofs being mocked by Dave. Same with Dice's obnoxious crowd except Dave decided not to profit off it.Expand QuoteAlso, how has nobody mentioned Mitch hedberg yet?[close]Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I couldn't handle the pressure of attempting standup but I often think of better tags and conceptual stuff to try out.
My only advice from an audience perspective is to refrain from ever commenting on a bomb in a way that tells us you're hurt and it's our fault.
I'm so jealous of people who feel comfortable enough to be able to do stand up
Dave Attell is one of the greats, I watched a ton of Insomniac episodes when I was like 12
Once I started doing stand up I pretty much stopped watching it. The Nate Bargatze special from a couple of years ago was great though, and if you like weirdo "alt comedy" the Maria Bamford special she shot at her house was funny. Most alt comedy is pretty fucking bad, but Bamford is usually great.
Mark normand, Kyle kinane, as mentioned... mark normand had a great special last year (someone posted above), both have great podcasts. I tried standup towards the end of college. My routine was kinda funny but couldn’t come up with new material so I gave up, but this was one of my bits:
“You know what’s the craziest movie I’ve seen? Office space...”
(Someone usually hoots at this point)
“You think fucking Inception was some trippy shit? (I sometimes said the Matrix instead) Nah nigga, Office...SPACE!!"
(Usually a small laugh)
(I would look for another black guy in the crowd)
“Fellow black man, what is your name?”
(If the dude has a regular name I would say “Otis?” he would of course correct me then I say “Oh you said Darius, my bad.” Usually the most guaranteed laugh I would get.)
“So Darius...have you seen office space? (Look around at the crowd) I have to ask, because our black movie lexicon is a little different...I mention Animal House around my niggas and they think I’m trying to buy some weed. (Big laugh) I was quoting Caddy Shack and my momma thought I was having a stroke (black people found this joke funnier).
“Anyways Darius let me tell you about Office Space. Some dude and his two friends skim hundreds of thousands of dollars from their employer, something fucked up so he was going to fess up but didn’t have to because the building burned down. Some printer gets fucked up, an Arab man breakdances, an Applebee’s subplot, it’s an amazing movie...but do you want to know WHY he fucked around and stole the money?”
(Black guy says why)
“Get this..........because he was Booooooooooooooored!!!!!”
(Big laugh)
“Why the fuck couldn’t this guy just get another job, his life empty so he gotta fuck shit up huh? What kinda bullshit is that!”
“Stick it to the man? He read the job description, he knew he was going to have work weekends sometimes, fuck outta here!”
“And this movie came out in ‘99, didn’t white people get rich off of domain names back then? Mutherfucker would buy ceilingfan.com and get a cool 2 mil from G.E because fuck it, why not.!”
“But all them post OJ and pre 9/11 movies were about weird responses to nihilism though “we conquered capitalism now what!?...Tom Cruise in an orgy cult?! fuck it. Brad Pitt plays the personification of your violent subconscious?...fuck it.
Alright I’m out, next time I’ll talk about movies that make sense damn sense, like Belly! Peace Y’all. (Not a good joke to end on, because White people didn’t know wtf belly was)

Mr. "Cancel culture is out of control" is a hypocrite of course. These types have been complaining about this in one form or another for decades, e.g., shock jocks complaining about political correctness, comedians crying about oversensitivity, etc., but they are ALWAYS snowflakes and hypocrites when it comes to criticism of or jokes about themselves.

I just watched Dave Chapelle‘s latest Netflix special. I loved his four other Netflix specials and I was very excited about this one popping up on Netflix.
It is by far the worst special he has put out. It feels like a set in the early stages of its development. It reminded me a lot of that leaked Louis CK set from four years ago: a lot of politically incorrect insults without much self awareness or any type of new perspectives. Just shock for shock‘s sake. It seems he hasn‘t put much work or thought into it. He also seems to be very full of himself in the special, which in my opinion is usually terrible for a comedian.
I hope he just needed to get that terrible special out to move on to better things….

He was unnecessarily mean to Madonna imo but he fuckin got Tom Hanks and Tim Allen pretty good you have to admit. ... OR other funny standup that has a non traditional format. While I think standup is usually a mix of prepared and improvised material for an audience expecting comedy, this is an example of a comic doing what comes naturally to them. They get in front of a crowd to tell jokes or be one for entertainment like she did here.

This video is the best version of the event including some news coverage of the aftermath.
I found an oral history of the event with lots of back story including reactions like this one:

She starts singing in earnest but you quickly see she reacts to the sound delay which makes her smile. I think that was a moment her instincts started to kick in.
Later on she mentioned Johnny Carson's advice: not to start too high. She realized 6 notes in that the rest was doomed and wished she could start over but then thought
"what the hell, I'm a comic, I'm gonna make it funny cuz I way over-shot my wad here".
That's my favorite part, when she unplugs her ears and goes for it, determined to finish the bit.

Hey folks, since getting sober in 2020 by getting back into skateboarding after 13 years as an alcoholic, I also got back into stand up comedy after a 5 year alcohol induced absence.
This past year I have gotten back on the road to building a career in stand up comedy and I am happy to say I have been having a lot more success now that I am sober.
I stopped skateboarding when I started drinking at age 16 and I have spent most of my adult life drunk and after getting back into skateboarding as a sober adult. I look at skateboarding a lot different now. I don't look at skateboarding as a sport, It's more as an art, the world is our canvas and the skateboard is our paintbrush.
Skateboarding saved my life and I am forever grateful for that, and I think what makes skateboarding so special is the incredibly supportive community. Most skaters cheer the success of each other, when someone lands something they have been working on everyone is happy to see them finally accomplish their goal. That is very special and is actually pretty rare in most other areas of life and feel fortunate to have grown up with such a community.
I just saw this thread and thought I'd leave a post with some of my stand up comedy for anyone who is interested in supporting a fellow skate bro working on accomplishing a goal. (a like, comment, subscribe, or follow goes a long way!)
I hate to be this douche asking people to follow me but unfortunately social media platforms are a big part of having a career in comedy now days so here I am.
Here's a clip of me making a few 8 ball pool jokes while repping EMERICA x CREATURE on the stage of the San Francisco Punchline.

Stand up is an incredibly difficult pursuit, so congratulations on your hard work! You look really comfortable on stage and your material is well thought out. Keep on keeping on!
Shout out to all of you who actually do standup as well!
I watched Ari Shaffir's "Jew" and it was so boring and un-funny I had to finish it in three separate chunks. I laughed twice, maybe three times. But everywhere I look (reddit, YT comments) people are saying it's the best special of the year, a masterpiece, totally great... And I really don't get it? It feels like a bunch of Jewish people are on a mission to talk this special up or are astroturfing because a fellow Jew put it out, but the whole thing fucking stunk. Have any of you watched it?
Going to see Joe List in January, over the past few months I've become a Tuesgay and am very much looking forward to the show

i really love comedy, been a life long fan every since seeing eddie murphy delirious when i was a kid. my wife and i go see shows pretty often, it's our favorite date. i'm guessing my age is showing or something though because i've been watching a lot of the stuff posted here and other than SBC, didn't laugh at all. maybe comedy is super diverse now. shows we've see over the last few years
- chappel
- amy schumer
- sienfeld
- chris rock
- bill burr
got tickets for louis ck
it was interesting to take my wife to bill burr, she went in finding him annoying and came out saying it was one of her favorite shows of all time.
i think the issue might be that i like story teller type comedians except sienfield and seems like a lot of the stuff shared here is more self depreciating and observational.

The Chris Rock special wasn’t as bad as I expected. Several times he’d veer towards the exhausting out-of-touch-rich-old-guy-vs-cancel-culture bullshit.. but then actually say something kind of funny. I just really wish the media would stop glamorizing cocaine so much lately… because it makes me really want some but I can’t.
Not sure if this belongs in the stand up or podcast thread.. but I recently discovered Kill Tony and it’s definitely entertaining. Maybe not so much the actual standup, but the absolutely ruthless and very not-PC roasting that ensues.

Shane’s fav comic is Louis ck, you can see the influence for sure. But as someone said, he’s his own monster. The stuff he said that led to his firing from snl was taken waaaay out of context. He did come up in Philly but started picking up steam with all the nyc guys (big jay and soder helped him a bunch). His podcast is one of my favorites, and his special “live from Austin” (posted above) is top 10 for me all time… maybe top 5…. Also, I’ve had friends see him recently running his next hour and they said it’s funnier than Austin. Let me know if you want a couple episodes of his podcast as a rec.

I caught a Stavros Halkias set the other night. He was very funny! Most of his online presence since leaving Cum Town focuses on crowd work, but he really didn't do it that much. Just lots of good bits. I saw Mullen a few months ago as well and felt like they had similar amounts of crowd work in their sets.

I appreciate how he regularly takes great risks. It is sad how so many people do not have the ability to understand that the overwhelming majority of comedy is non-literal. It pains me to see so many individuals just waiting for something to be uttered that warrants cancellation, rather than taking it all in and considering the context. Bill is great.

100%. Doesn’t matter if you’re from the area (it helps), but, I think it’s the best podcast going. Also, yes, Philly is crushing right now. AYG, Matt and Shane, stuff island (so underrated), and Oral Presentations (Chris wood does book reports. Ex: he reads 1984 and then gives you the cliffs notes).
Chris Wood is the shit, never knew he had a podcast.
Right now I love Jordan Jensen. She’s badass, new to the game, and has respect from many other older comics. Special coming out very soon and I see her having the same fast trajectory as Shane Gillis or Tim Dillon.
I watched fellow skater Mark Normand‘s special on Netflix yesterday. Definitely worth a watch. Some killer, some filler. I like his old timey style. He seems like an autistic guy with Tourette’s.
His take on identity politics making him more racist was pretty bad: Just because it was real easy to pretend not to see race twenty years ago doesn’t mean there was less racism… his holocaust joke was pretty gnarly too (not very funny either IMO). I am German and if you made that joke in Germany you would get sued for sure. It is hard as hell to make a good holocaust joke. Kudos for trying.
My favorite part was the right wing weather report: “… Praise the lord! No back to you Sugartits“

Free speech in Germany is much more limited by what is called "human dignity" than it is in the US. All these laws were put into place after Nazi German was defeated and the main objective of the Allies was to prevent another fascist dictatorship.
In Germany you can reference the holocaust, but you cannot deny it. In a way racist speech is also punishable by law.
There is a paragraph in the German Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch) called "Volksverhetzung" (Incitement of masses), which limits free speech. Mark Normands joke where he compares the the burned corpses of holocaust victims to old black people with dry skin ("ashy"), could be ruled as "incitement of the masses", because it might be ruled that he "denies or downplays an act committed under the rule of National Socialism". I am shure if he was German and made that joke, he would definitely get cancelled and he would get get sued. If they'd actually be able to commit him of that crime, I don't know. There are similar cases where judges have ruled in favor of freedom of expression/freedom of art.Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

You would know better than me edit:(regarding german culture) but I would assume it's easy to prove these are jokes performed for comedy, its purpose is to incite surprise not hatred.
The language of the law gives me the impression there must be a degree of sincerity when talking about the holocaust.
We understand the seriousness of bodies burned, audiences "laugh" when he compares it to the vain concern of dry skin.
It's the vanity being mocked not the deaths.
Could be the same joke he goes for about piles of shoes, the stereotype that black people collect expensive shoes for status / the nazis collected shoes at their death camps.
So I don't think he's sincerely equating the two to downplay the atrocities, he's just using severe juxtaposition with macabre imagery.
I appreciate the depth of your post. Did my take change your perspective on the perceived butt of the joke?

That Gillis special was really good although it’s kind of freaky hearing someone talk so Philly on TV.
I guess there was some kind of schism in the Philly comedy scene when Shane was canceled from SNL and I had two skate friends on either side. The guy who stuck with Gillis (who worked at my old local skate shop and was funny as shit) ended up as his opening act.

Honestly, I'm glad Flair left and it seemed like everyone else was too. I had a feeling from the first time he spoke he wasn't going to stay the whole show. Dude was wasted. Him bringing up his son's overdose at A COMEDY SHOW was a real buzz kill.
I don't keep up with KT on the regular. I've been watching the show since it's infancy, but I have found that it has gotten terribly mean spirited over the last year or so. There's a fine line between roasting someone and being MEAN for mean's sake.

Tony Hinchcliffes show last night was really fuckin good. Like everyone says I haven't cared much for his specials but his live show was actually hilarious as hell. He's touring with William Montgomery, David Lucas and kam patterson too. I've gotten a little tired of them on kill tony but their sets were incredibly better than what you see on kt. William was probably the best out them which surprised me
I’m not well versed either but isn’t that something comics are mad at? Comedy becoming too interactive and dependent on reels?I don’t know, maybe; but he’s pretty entertaining when doing so.

Not to be all Al Madrigal but does Steve-o's comedy consist of jokes or is it him doing on-stage antics and recalling the times he horked an earthworm ?
I once asked a coworker where the best food was in the town and he said "Panda Express" and I feel similar apprehension anytime I ask people (people I don't know) if the comedy they appreciate would be the comedy that I appreciate. props to @fineslime for ye bravery

Shane Gillis is going to host SNL next
Would like to fly on the wall wherever Shane Gillis was chosen to host.
He seems like someone who should be the musical guest that’s rising in mass public awareness as a niche standup/podcaster.
Maybe he’ll end up on Dana carvey and David spade’s snl themed podcast.
Looking forward to some behind the scenes commentary.

Yeah thinking on my choice of “niche” , I think he’s got enough recognizability to earn the gig, I’m just surprised they invited someone I recognize as primarily a standup/podcaster. And that’s kinda niche to me.
Also, half of AYG just put out a special as well…

Was just listening to We Might be Drunk and was surprised and stoked to hear Sam Tallent shoutout the new Baker has a Deathwish video.I watched it but might not be the best judge as I've never found SNL even remotely funny. His opening was kinda ruf seemed like the crowd just did not want to play along, even the band was barely giving him anything. Sketches were all whatever I didn't laugh but can't say that was Shane's fault he did as well as any actor I've ever seen on the show.
I work in the middle of the night and didnt watch but how was Shane on SNL? Did anybody catch it?
