All those skate YouTube’s are super corny and as an older skater it bums me out that they are making my weird little hobby a little less cool with each video but I just put them on ignore and enjoy the parts of skating that I still think are cool.
I used to skate with Dan a long time ago and he was always a cool dude so he gets a pass in my book. I don’t watch his videos but I’m sure making them is way more fun than a normal job so I can’t hate on him.

I like Dan’s content. I’m also an adult who prefers skating parks to real street and I live my life assuming no one will ever think I’m ”cool”.
Being successful at Youtube prolly always requires some level of bowing before the algorithm gods, but other than clickbait-y titles that are obviously tongue in cheek I think he stands well above all the try-hards with no personality.

While my girlfriend thinks that Gary Rodgers has the personality of Donkey from Shrek and finds him annoying because of it, I actually don't mind Skateline. Never actually watched any of his reply videos to YouTube comments though, I couldn't care less about that.

I do watch it sometimes when its suggested to me on youtube,to see if there is any footage i may have not seen. I hope you are doing well in these crazy times!

Haha no worries man, in the past it's definitely helped me break the cycle of binge watching crap I'm barely even into for the sake of it being right there. Exciting shit 8)

I get Gary Rogers isn't for everyone and that's how it should be. Preferences. However, Skateline is a show I watch everytime it drops. He's funny in that and it's about skating at its core. His X Games commentary is not the best, so I'll give it to those of you there. Outside of that, I think he's hardly corny and shouldn't stop making Skateline, which is the only YT content he makes that I'm aware of.
At least Skateline was a fresh take on mocking the Sports Center style format but also delivered current skate culture. That recipe was successful and is still pretty tasteful for the most part.
Now, everything that John Hill has done since the industry turned their attention away from him (probably for good reasons), is a feeble attempt at being liked, accepted, and treated as one of their own. Sure, he carved his own lane to make money.... but at what cost? I don't think that many other skate YouTubers even like him. His shtick is contrived, conceited, pretentious, and makes me feel second hand embarrassment if I watch any of his stuff. Good thing I can ignore his stuff on the socials so it doesnt affect me until it comes up in conversation, like here.

To everyone saying Gary is corny when he's commentating.. Have you heard the other commentators? Would you seriously prefer Chris Pastras? They're all corny. Gary is definitely better on skateline but he's unpredictable when he's commentating, i enjoy it just because you don't know what he's going to say next. It throws off his fellow commentators, who are used to coasting through the whole thing just mindlessly repeating the same catchphrases over and over

Gary Rogers abuses the fact that young white kids laugh whenever black guys say the n-word with an animated delivery, and that loses its appeal once those white kids grow up and discover black guys who are actually funny. Whoever compared Gary Rogers to Chappelle needs to be euthanized.
mf's like John Hill and them initially came off as some midwest suburban bible study cornballs, and the fact that they've remained cornballs after being exposed to the diverse culture of skateboarding speaks volumes. It seems like he fused that identity with a tinge of vulnerable narcissism that he picked up while living in NY, and his YouTube channel comes off as an internal struggle between being innately lame & not fully understanding what it is that makes him lame. There are valid reasons why the industry didn't accept him through conventional means, and that's saying a lot since we've seen racists/ woman beaters/ sex offenders/ etc. get a pass.
As for the Braille "WE MADE A SKATEBOARD OUT OF _______" videos, those videos only appeal to non-skateboarders. I don't actually consider that to be skateboard related content, it's basically a sideshow for the uninitiated to gawk at while they stuff their faces with fast food and mountain dew.

Things are bound to become less cool the more people do them, that's why you skate for the enjoyment of the activity, not because it makes you look cool.
