Title: Oldest Must See Video (for the younger generation)
Post by: Tear Up a Trick on February 22, 2021, 12:25:08 PM
What's the oldest video that the kids at the park or your own kids need to look up and watch even though it came out years before they were born?

I would say Bones Brigade Video Show.  Lot of important skate significance.  Coming up on 40 years old.  Should watch it just to see Rodney's kickflip.

Shackle me Not or Hokus Pokus. They were both before my time, but when I watched them I felt that that's were modern street skating came from: Gaps, longer rails, flip tricks, combos, etc.

the youger generation most likely cannot sit through a whole skate video anymore. that being said, a visual sound and video days are some they should watch. theres too much "tricks" and not enough "skating" nowadays.

came to post these. compared to the powell videos, gullwing, g&S pretty much every other videos from that era those 2 were so much Korean relatable.  those early world videos were also amazing

I'm almost 29 yo, I always show daewon stuff, or MJ on seven steps to heaven, shit like that just to prove that everything was already done in the 90s, and explaining how style matters and these giroud jock skaters are doing it kinda wrong

always works!

I dont think stuff older than that will make kids care, they grow very used to HD or well filmed stuff, same with tricks/style

going older than 94~ is too hipster, if the kid is really interested he will look for it, our job is just to make the skate seed work inside them

I used to serve at a pretentious bookstore cafe and would always put on old videos to get through the shifts of young people who "own this city" and tip like shit. Now 'n' Later and Useless Wooden Toys are two that would actually get random hobos and young kids amped. I'd also put on Skate and Destroy since there is a lot of good Boston footage in that video.

Obviously I'd say Video Days but I also feel like a lot of kids nowadays wouldn't get that video (I remember kids struggling to get it back in the 2000's already), usually I try to tune them in onto late 80's/early 90's vids from Powell/New Deal/H-Street as those are a good display of what you can do on a skateboard and also how you're really free build your own style. And if I had to pick just one of these then maybe I'd go with 1281.

Also, it's funny seeing all the differences between what qualifies as old.

I will say Eastern Exposure 3

From Powell, Santa Cruz, H Street 80s, then Blind and Plan B early 90s and so many more, but one that stands out that rarely gets a mention is Dan Wolfe with his video Closure, which always stood out as such a good video (and included parts from so many others Dan filmed like Eastern Exposure series).  The same video is linked from both of these posts, but the comments are worth reading just for the information about this video.  It is worth the almost hour long watch!

https://www.vaguemag.com/closure-by-dan-wolfe-full-video/

A classic right here from 2003 showcasing a re-cap of Dan Wolfe’s videography over the years, some clips you’ll notice from classics such as ‘Eastern Exposure’, ‘Real to Reel’ and much more. One of our favourites here at Vague and if you’ve never watched it we highly suggest you watch this one from start to finish. Featuring Mark Gonzales, Brian Anderson, Ed Templeton, Dennis Busentiz, Ricky Oyola, Kenny Reed, Stevie Williams, Donny Barley, Tim O’Connor, Fred Gall and too many other legends to list. Perfect viewing material whether it’s lockdown or not.

http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2020/04/29/dan-wolfes-closure-documentary-skating-look-good/

Some of you “real heads” may have heard of Dan Wolfe‘s Closure project before, which released back in 2003. It’s kind of a highlight reel of all the amazing skating Dan had filmed up from the mid-’90s to the early 2000s and has a bunch of unseen angles and antics that would later wind up in some of skating’s greatest videos.

For whatever reason, Closure never really got circulated that much when it came out, but Dan recently decided to finally release the full 40-minute mini-documentary to the masses. To give you an idea of just how jam-packed this is with good shit, the video kicks off with a pint-sized Bam Margera skating suburban Pennsylvania in 1993 and just gets better and better from there.

When we came across this video, we knew we had to re-share it with the world. There’s just something about Dan’s compiled footage that puts it leagues above most other skateboarding captured on film even up ’til today. The filming is on point, the skate sounds are in your face, and the way it’s all cut together leaves you genuinely exhilarated.

There’s an element of mastery and finesse in this project that’s absent from a lot of today’s skate content. Nowadays, everyone can piece together an edit on iMovie on their phone made up of shoddily filmed homie clips. It’s not every day a project comes along where you can feel the care and thoughtfulness that went into every step of the process. Closure ticks all the right boxes and then some.

fuck it give the kids baker 3 and a rack of beer. if i had to develop a drinking habit idolizing a bunch of dipshits these kids should too. ruin another generation of impressionable children. also blind what if so they know how bad a skate video can truly be.

Right? I’m like ... Photosynthesis? That’s old? Oh shit it’s old. But it’s not old, old. A lot of that skating could be in a video today.

Photosynthesis came out in what, 2000? I remember at that age anything from before 94-95 looked old to me. But that's probably due to the fast progression of that era and introduction of VX as the standard camera later on.

Considering we watch the progression of skating in real time with a never ending stream of clips now, I wouldn't be suprised if a 14 year old kid had no interest in a bunch of videos from the early 2000's that we consider classic. Let alone grainy as hell 80's or early 90's footage.

I think whoever said it's too hard to get kids to watch full vids is correct.

So I think it' more like what key parts should kids watch?

early Hensley, Natas, Gonz, Barbee to show where street skate skating came from.

Then something from the EMB era of street. Probably Mike and Sanch

maybe next would be Fowler from "a visual sound" to show the reaction to the previous mention.

After that Guy in Mouse, Jamie in Welcome, Josh in timecode, Penny in Europe 95, MJ in seven steps.

jump ahead to Stevie in Choco tour, something funny from the Storm, Muska from Dream, Carrol again from Modus

at that point youre sorta caught up.

oh, and every bobby puleo part.
