Title: Music Films
Post by: Uncle Flea on February 22, 2021, 12:49:42 PM
I don't make threads usually.

I enjoy rock Operas etc. Here's Perry and Kasey's gift.

We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen. Super sick stuff in here. Always cool to hear Mike Watt ramble and the connection with him and D Boon is just a beautiful thing, man. Some acoustic shit with George Hurley on bongos. so good

absolutely 100% yes man!

i don't know how many times i've watched this and rewatched (and rewatched) some of those early performances at that fucked-up show at the Starwood like "Paranoid Chant" (around 26:27), untitled? (31:00), and that awesome part starting around 5:35 talking about how Mike Watt figured out what a bass was and Flea talking about how they learned to tune instruments which leads into that facemelting performance of "Contained" (at around 6:57, one of my favorite songs)...

...and how crazy and beautiful of a song is "the anchor" (at around 50:46)...what Mike Watt calls their "opus" because it's over 2 minutes long--always thought it would be perfect for a skate part actually...parts for lines and parts for slo-mo...

...super fucking heavy when it gets to D Boone's death--can't watch with dry eyes...

can't forget this

i've actually used parts of this to frame discussions of modernity/urbanization/industrialization in lit classes that i've taught...i love the Marshall Berman quote it begins with from All That is Solid Melts Into Air

“To be modern is to find ourselves in an environment that promises us adventure, power, joy, growth, transformation of ourselves and the world – and, at the same time that threatens to destroy everything we have, everything we know, everything we are.”

Watched this recently and it was pretty good. It's about the Pixies 2004 reunion. It won't blow you away, but it does contain some interesting insight into each members' personal life.

I usually throw on The Last Waltz on Thanksgiving while I'm cooking. Any stuff from Alan Lomax is also great.

I recently watched 24 hour party people which is about the Manchester music scene in the 70s-90s following bands like joy division, New order, happy Mondays and the club that sucked all the money out of those bands; the haçienda
It's hilarious
