Title: Songs/Albums you wish you could hear for the first time again
Post by: Vinz on March 09, 2021, 06:46:34 AM
I wish I could listen to Radiohead - In Rainbows again for the first time.
The album is just perfection.

so many. the first one that comes to mind is bill fay - time of the last persecution. the way the arrangement of that record builds and dips and turns is so enthralling, to be able to experience that again for the first time would be magical.

Dead Kennedy's - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. heard this record in Gr7 and had no idea what to make of it other than it was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. Chemical Warfare, that breakdown before the last chorus, was absolutely mad. Was it circus sounds? madness? It didn't make sense but sorta computed. Funland at the Beach too. Damn.

Bob Dylan- Highway 61 Revisited. Album gave me some serious feels

pretty much all of them...i sometimes feel very hollow when i'm skipping songs on spotify that i have curated and love, but have heard enough times that i kind of don't need to hear them anymore.

the most significant song i feel like i ever heard was 'wuthering heights' by the incomparable kate bush. it was on our local community radio in the car, i didn't actually even get to find out what it was or who it was cause the dj never said. i was beautifully haunted until like two weeks later when i heard it again on the radio and they actually identified the song- i was about 14, we were taking my little brother to a karate lesson - and i just felt like no other music i had known up to then really mattered anymore. i had been a little metal head and was just obsessed with guitars - then i was like, holy shit, i need to hear all of her music and need to play piano/keyboards as well as guitar and also any other instrument i can get a sound out of. my whole musical interest shifted and i feel like my emotional self developed a lot too - it was a hell of an experience.

edit: hearing all of prince's music was obviously very full on too, but kate led me to prince. hearing the first roxy music album was also a very incredible experience, very, very, very!

The Weakerthans: left and leaving
Having said that, timing wise it was pretty much perfect for me, would have been nice to have a big joint and a vintage stereo to listen to it on instead of my CD discman

Propagandhi: everything post Potemkin
Because I’m an ex-pat and I really miss getting physical releases on vinyl and sitting down and absolutely consuming and absorbing them

I think the 2 that changed my personal world were:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkITlCa-r6k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHiRyuKi6SU&list=PLBnJv6rImVe_Da0s1kx9tuIa88cfJgawE

Learned about both from the first Thrasher I ever bought (August 1986, Vallely cover).
I saw the ad for Age of Quarrel and the ST/ Venice ad in the back and bought both right away. Both are my 2 favorite albums that are not by Pink Floyd or Black Sabbath. BUT that being said, Both Cro-Mags and ST blew my mind. I used to stare at the band picture of the Cro-Mags and fantasize about getting tattoos some day (of which now I have a lot I guess), and Suicidal.. I promptly started wearing khaki Dickies, flannels and bandanas. I continued the ST gear until about 5 years ago, so I had a 30 year run dressing like them.

I bought Suicidal Tendencies of the strength of the video with skateboarding around 89’.

Age of Quarrel didn’t reach me until 95’ when my friends go into Hardcore. I didn’t like a lot of the shit at the time but Show You No Mercy was rippin’.

I was also heavily influenced by the DRI poster in my friend’s older brother’s room. I just knew I wanted to be down with whatever that was about.

Funeral by arcade fire. Fell asleep to neighborhood #1, and my first thought was "i can't wait to listen to this whole album tomorrow"
