Title: Diy skate decks
Post by: thomgraham4 on March 10, 2021, 09:17:31 AM
I was thinking of making some decks at home, I found a place where I can buy genuine Canadian maple ply sheets designed for skateboards and glue. I was planning as using two old skateboards that are the same brand/model as a mold, I'll put the ply wood between the two decks and then clamp them together to serve as a mold. I was wondering if it is worth trying it or if all DIY skateboards are bad? Like, if I try this and do it properly with no mistakes will the skateboard actually be skateable and not snap on the second day?

It will probably delaminate or snap quickly if you can get it to a finished product. Might as well give it a shot, and post about the process so we have some entertainment and you don’t waste a perfectly good thread. Good luck!

I’d say do it because I want to know how works out. Sounds like you have the same ingredients.

My theory is that you won’t have to perfectly seal the glue and take to the makeshift mold. But please don’t let that discourage you.

My theory is that thomgraham4 is never going to do this or post here again.

Decided to do an update because LUGR doubted me:
I bought all the materials, I just have no time so I will be waiting till the weekend. I've changed my plans and now I'm going to use 3 very very heavy and very big bricks to squash the boards together, because that will definitely provide the pressure needed(I'm going to use wooden wedges to stop the decks from deforming) I am also going to glue three plies at a time. I'll give another update at the weekend if you guys are interested

I am definitely interested! I would like to see some photos of the process.

Didn't work, all the wood warped. I don't think the pressure was evenly distributed enough

Thanks for the update. At least you gave it a solid try.

Yup, gonna try again soon hopefully, I'll post again when I do. Thinking of using a vacuum airbag as I can buy ones made specifically for skateboards

Would c-clamps on the two decks work?  You'd probably have to modify the decks....

No, unfortunately they wouldn't be nearly enough pressure. Realistically you would need 20 tons of pressure

An Australian dude has these jigs set up, concrete shape press and car jacks.  Dunno how they turn out but the jig looks pretty well done.
