Title: NYC Metro Area General Thread
Post by: CossRooper on March 17, 2021, 12:23:37 PM
It's hard to keep up with skate things going on in NYC so making a thread. Less of a travel guide and more of a "whats going on" sort of thing. Premiers, spots coming and going, trending flatground spots, gossip/slander/lies etc etc.

Taylor Nawrocki's coffee spot is the move if you find yourself in Williamsburg. Best IG content in the game.

Does anyone know if any shops in the city carry Lakai?

Coming in here to say thanks for the tip on this one, just had an excellent session here today. For anyone else checking it out: Walk in through the side driveway (closer to the Fed Ex building) instead of the main Restaurant Depot parking lot if you want to avoid security

All the streets are Silent NYC premiere is at the Angelika Village East on Friday, July 23

https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/villageeast/film/all-the-streets-are-silent\

Also they installed new super bright LED lights at Williamsburg Monument on all the lightposts that had the shitty dim orange-ish bulbs. The upper part with the 3 step curb is so bright and skateable all night now.

Hi all, I just booked a trip to nyc for november - excited to return as I tried to move there from canada in february of 2020 but then pandemic hit so I came back to montreal.

staying for at least a week and going to try to skate a bunch - gonna check out that curb spot mentioned above. going to check out stuff on the QS spot list too

is there anything fun you guys have been skating?

gonna be staying in brooklyn, does anyone know where this ledge spot is?

I used to live on 170th and would go to this park after like 11 pm all the time, just for the lit up downhill area. And although I am lucky and no one ever bothered me, it was SKETCHY. There are always 4 or more people in that tunnel all shooting up and giving the most intense eyes. Then all the people coming in and out of the woods...ugh. The lights are great, though.

It might be the one that was in red hook years ago. Saw the same one this weekend in coney island next to the pier with the wavy bench

The Lafayette/Spring curb is amazing. I wish I could give whoever got it going money or something. It's a little angled and a little round. It's perfect. Just did a slappy front smith. Worried it'll get killed like the curb north of borough hall.

Unreal that there are people out there that are so uptight and lame enough to think skate stopping a curb is a good idea.

the authorities tried knobbing the curb at VAPA in LA and it got de-knobbed pretty quick. just an encouraging little anecdote. altho the downtown BK curb is kind of in a cop hotspot, whereas VAPA's parking lot is kinda protected and off the main street.

Cadman! That shit being gone is gonna hurt this winter when the sun starts going down mad early. Perfect ground and lit 24/7, huge loss

Village Psychic are calling it "Sadman Plaza" now which is tight and accurate.

Agreed. plus skating loud as fuck in front of all those people at that lil cafe with like, generational wealth, trying to enjoy their $20 drinks is a great dynamic.

I am going to be in Queens for a work trip September 6th - 8th, working in Corona and staying in Long Island City. I only have to work the 7th, so I'm hoping to skate as much as possible. I'm going to head straight to Con Edison from LaGuardia before checking into my hotel, but I was hoping to get some insight on what else to skate in my short time there. I'm trying to stay fairly close to my hotel to avoid subways, crowds, etc but if LIC is as void of spots as the QS map shows I could always head down to Brooklyn or something. Is the Long Island City DIY still going? I'd really like to find a cellar door somewhere in the area as I'm from the Southwest and they don't exist here.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :)

You can absolutely find cellar doors everywhere, but you should be prepared that the vast majority are under peoples apartments and those things rattle loud as fuck when you skate them. So you should probably not be planning to sesh a perfect cellar door all afternoon or anything. They’re usually more of a “keep it moving” kind of obstacle

hi nyc skater boys. do you guys have any advice for things I should be prepared for? here is my itinerary and what i have questions about.

im flying in to jfk and staying with a friend in Bushwick for a day and a half. does the train from jfk take you straight to brooklyn? or how does that work?

and for the last portion of my trip im staying in a airbnb in harlem, 10 blocks north of central park. what would be the best and most cost effective way to travel from bushwick to my airbnb? also keep in mind its me and my gf and we will have luggage. i wasn't planning on staying in harlem but my gf surprised me so im just trying to make it work the best without cancelling the airbnb to stay somewhere else.

im super excited to skate nyc for the first time in like 5 yrs. im mainly going to stay around brooklyn and hit k-bridge, borough hall, that one statue spot with the small ledges and three stairs, and blue park. any1 recommend anything else to try out?

You can do all that on the subway it will just take a while and involve lugging your suitcases up and down some stairs. I would probably take a cab from the airport to bushwick and then a train when you leave BK and head uptown. Probably 40 bucks or so but can vary a lot depending on where in bushwick and traffic

Yes, let's skate.

Best bagels and pizza in my opinion require you coming up to the Bronx.

If you are in Manhattan and looking for pastrami, I would send you to the same place I've been sending people since day one: Sarge's.  But most people will say Katz then Pastrami Queen, both of which are also terrific.

Planning a birthday trip to the city 2nd week of April. Most likely will be staying in Williamsburg or Greenpoint area. Probably spend the majority of the week long trip in Manhattan though.

Hows the weather that time of year? Will def be doing a couple skate days, also bopping all over doing tourist things and eating/drinking/partying.

I havent been to NYC since right before 9/11, Ive heard its changed alot.

Any suggestions on anything really would cool. I'm kind of a travel nerd so I'm really just looking for local insights on cool divey bars, new sick restaurants, venues, clubs.

april around here is tough to predict. winter is over but its not uncommon to continue getting a lot of nasty wet and somewhat cold weather. other times it is proper nice spring weather.

its definitely changed a ton since the early 00's. the biggest change is that so much cultural activity has sprouted up in the outer boroughs. you could probably spend a whole weeklong vacation eating drinking skating and partying just in north brooklyn these days.

May: high of 72° / low of 54°F, w/ 9 days rain

May is usually when it starts getting nice

It's $120 so basically the cost of a gym membership in Manhattan at a place other than planet fitness. Weekends in the morning or at night are good. Weekdays after 8 are good too. But other times during the winter it's really packed so I avoid it. But you get a key code so you can go whenever you want. If you wanna go skate at 2am you can.

Vans park in montrose/morgan area is an option

Fat Kid/Golconda is lit, pretty sure they don't lock the gates until 9 at K Bridge park and it's possible to shimmy under them (I've done it before), the curb/asphalt hip at the top of the Queens side of K Bridge is well lit, LES is sort of lit, not super bright but manageable.

Sorry to get off topic for the Brooklyn folks, but curious if anyone who skates Riverdale, Kinsbridge, Van Cortland, Fordham, or North bronx in general?  Typically skate at Van Cortland, New Roc and Yonkers park and the New Rochelle street spots but looking to branch out to more bronx spots.   Pretty psyched a skatepark is being built soon in Riverdale as well (oddly at a really rough ledge spot I used to skate).  Have some rough/cutty spots I'm happy to share in those areas but always curious if there are more folks around hitting new street spots in north bronx.

We skate the same area, wouldn’t be surprised if I already know you or seen you around before. There’s an underground curb & ledge spot in dobbs ferry that’s a pretty good winter spot. Last time I went the ledge was missing angle iron, I can DM the address if interested. As far as north bronx spots go, theres this school up the block from the Dyre ave train stop(Rosa Parks Educational Campus) that has a solid skateable bench on the basketball court, a 3 stair & larger stairset. That’s been a go-to spot during the warmer seasons for years, never been kicked out but it can get packed with basketball players during the summer.

There’s also a new skatepark in mount vernon that hasn’t been officially opened but has been completed and a low bust on the weekends. I don’t really care for it but figure i mention it.

Felt like they really jammed everything so close together at that park which makes it hard to flow around if there’s more than a few people I think. I’m stoked my hometown has a skatepark though, didn’t think it would happen.

Sup NYC slappers, just moved here from Toronto. Waiting on a new set of trucks to come in the mail (thank you sale gear thread) and then I'll be hitting Fat Kid park for my first sesh, anyone here hit that place regularly? Low impact is my jam. Also down to bomb the prospect park hill, trying to get more confident in my powerslides. Holler!

Found a cool spot at a school by my place this weekend that has a great angle-iron ledge and some nice curbs/flat. anyone interested in linking up hmu!

I’ve seen the stair set at the Banks is skateable again. Anyone know if other areas are accessible/available for seshing?
Title: Re: NYC Metro Area General Thread
Post by: artichoke on June 04, 2023, 02:27:50 PM
No, and they don't look like they'll be skateable anytime soon. The big banks are still an active worksite, and the weeds that grew between the cracks in the small banks have grown to the point where parts of it look like early stages of a forest are forming.
Title: Re: NYC Metro Area General Thread
Post by: Mandatory Reload on June 05, 2023, 07:31:11 AM
just skated it yesterday, the only area that's reopened is the nine-stair area. you can skate into the bank to the right of the stair set from the top but it's a bit of a thread the needle situation with the angle because there's a pole at the top and a planter with a tree in it at the bottom that you have to swerve to avoid. if you go look at Caleb Barnett or Seven Strong's IG story right now, there's clips of them skating into it. whole Supreme/Violet squad was there with Stroebeck while I was. Caleb got a super nice nollie half cab flip into the bank.

there's also a ledge up there that you can skate into the bank but it's a really tough angle and you have to gap like a solid 3 feet or so to even get into it and then you're kinda pitched straight towards the tree at the bottom. all i could get was a 50-50 on it and that took ages lol

there's also a pretty fun euro-gap ish thing at the bottom where there's a slight bank that launches you over a patch of soil and a divider.

other than that, your options are to skate flat, do wallies off the bridge supports, or get buck on the nine-stair/rail/tiny curb hubba (which is not easy to skate at all) lol

the areas with the "big banks" and the "small banks" are still closed off and i don't believe they've announced an opening data for them. seems like it may be a while due to their current condition.

they were really bad last week. biked across brooklyn (bed-stuy/fort greene area) to go skate last thursday and basically couldn't keep my eyes open without having them fly in every couple seconds. opening my mouth was a guaranteed couple of em to the throat. when i was skating, i would take a lap and by the end of it i would have like 10 dead ones stuck to my shirt. it was fucked. hasn't been that bad for me since then but it doesn't surprise me they're still around.

After the downpour on the 4th, I gave everything a day to dry up. Millenium definitely, uhhh, was having some problems. Accidentally became an off road BMX course. Not really sure how to fix this, I've swept up before for twigs and all that but this is beyond my pay grade.

That is a very well-off and kooky part of NYC. But if you're into art there's a lot of really good (free) galleries in the area. Los Mariscos is also a 10min walk from your hostel and the fish tacos there are super bangin. Your best bet is to skate 5mins to the F train and take it a few stops to LES park.

are we talking traveling from point a to point b by skating in a bike lane or sessioning a spot in a bike lane? (i.e. tyshawn skating the cans in the bike lane in the most recent supreme video)

former is fine if not encouraged, the latter is frowned upon.

word then yeah you’re good. as someone else said further up, people literally parking in bike lanes is incredibly common here so travelling on anything with wheels is pretty kosher. people even ride mopeds and other gas powered stuff in bike lanes which is kinda sketch imo but happens regularly (there was a big collision on the williamsburg bridge bike path recently caused by a moped that put several people in the ICU). no one will mind you being on a skateboard as long as you’re moving

Pyramid Ledge is maybe knobbed again, but if you gap out, you're good. If not, you're in the middle of the Financial District there, and there are going to literally be hundreds of spots within a 15 minute push. Hit the Quartersnacks spot map.

it was knobbed last time i went there about 2 months ago. it just has one knob right in the middle of the ledge, so as the poster above me mentioned, you could gap out but that's easier said than done. there are other ledges there that can be skated that aren't knobbed currently i think, but they're not out ledges like the main ones everyone skates. bust factor is relatively high i think but marginally better on weekends.

you're just a couple blocks from Seaport there though which has some of the nicest ledges in the city. lots of pedestrian traffic but still really fun. not far from tons of other stuff too but a lot of the stuff at office buildings in that area is a bust during the week, just fyi.

CBS building, that's an OG spot from the 90s. Unfortunately it's blocked off and not skateable, I live right by here. It was only skateable again for a brief period of time when they removed the planters for construction, but it's netted off now. Someone did cut the netting/fencing making it very briefly skateable for a couple days, but they replaced it again.

Anyone as excited as me for the new skatepark in seton park in The Bronx aka Riverdale?  Probably not, but I've been stalking the site since it was announced and looks like construction finally starting. 3 years behind schedule, not bad for NYC!

To confirm, skatepark in seton park in BX to be area fenced off and city workers around.  Hopefully this is really happening.  Actually shocking given how close VC park is, but without a car if your not into skating or walking (i.e., a little kid) its a world away, so very exciting.  Funding is there and construction vehicles and looks like maybe a year out it will be skate able.  For now, annoyingly a number of key walking trails cut off by the fencing and some fun flatground spots/a ledge I used to skate.  Oh well..

Any spots people are willing to share in Inwood either near the park or the bridge to bronx.  Been over there alot, but not skated.  Looking for rails (not for me, but 'friends'), curbs, ledges, and especially banks. Thank you!

just checked out the new ocean hill playground park yesterday. it's a real different vibe from most of the other parks in town. i like it because you can just pump and roll around the banks and qps. it'll probably be terrible when it gets crowded with people just lining up to hit the ledges tho.

That new Ocean Hill park is a blessing. Shoutout to Wade Yates. Def gonna be doing some dawn patrols over there to beat the crowds. Two normal ledges, a good hip, and a nice round rail, in a non-crowded layout... unusual for NY.

Not sure how cheap you need cheap to be, but if you're staying in that area you won't be too far of a trip from what are arguably the two best burgers in NY right now, Rolo's in Ridgewood (m) and Superiority Burger (v) right next to Tompkins.  Read the reviews and decide if you will believe the hype.

Re: Bars I could say go to Talea if you're going to McCarren skatepark a block away.  It's woman owned and you are in NYC in March.  Same with Ainslie not too far away.

for a cheap scumbag bar filled with skaters and women that want to have their lives ruined by dating them try Carmelos. $3 pints of beer.

if you find yourself in the east village a low key, cheap option is Sly Fox, a Ukranian bar with the same ukranian dude bartending every night.

Clem's in Williamsburg is owned by pool skater Tony Farmer

for cheap food just go to any deli with 3.5+ stars and get a chopped cheese with everything, or an egg and cheese on a roll. that's gonna be like $6 and $3.50 respectively

another dumb cheap option is North Dumpling in Chinatown. You can easily get like 2 pounds of food there for $10. insanely cheap and good and chinatown has 1 million skatespots (check Quartersnacks)

Good recs, but one note here -- The burger at Rolos is $18 and fries are an extra $8.... the food is objectively great but it's one of the most expensive restaurants in ridgewood and the landlord who helped open it is the absolute worst trendy fuck. avoid

if you're in Ridgewood and want unique cheap bar food from people who actually live in the neighborhood check "I Like Food" in Aunt Ginnys or get german food at Gottscheer hall.

As mentioned above, Carmelo’s on Dekalb in Bushwick is a bit of a skater hangout, kinda picking up the mantle from places like Enids or Max Fish now that they’re closed. Right down the street from Maria Hernandez ledge spot

Also, I kinda hate Rolo’s. The food is definitely good but everything else about it rubs me the wrong way

Not trying to turn this isnto a Rolos chat but fuck that place. One, you wont get to try the burger because they sell out 5 minutes after they open. Two, this place is a straight up corny podcaster destination. Three, its owned by a reality investment group if you care about that. Go to the seneca if you want a good burger. Also Carmelos sucks, Mollies or minnows is a better option with out the toxic waste.

carmelos is full of all the skaters you would never actually want to be friends with. i've never seen a girl in there over the age of 23 if that tells you anything.

I second Mollies and Minnows. on top of it being run by ATL homies, the food at Minnows is top notch bar food

i tried the seneca because other people told me they had a good burger but i actually thought it was trash. im willing to give it another shot. real OGs will remember when that storefront was briefly a heavy metal bar called bierleichen, which was actually kinda sick, especially back when there were way fewer bars in the area

you know who has a surprisingly good burger tho? Talon on wyckoff. Terrible vibes inside, like everyone there is as rude as possible for some reason, but i prefer that to the "college kids bringing their parents out to dinner and people who saw it on tiktok" vibe at Rolos

And the cellar door/philly stair combo posted above is on weirfield, you're welcome

Whats cookin, y’all!?!

Im working a carpentry gig an hour outside the city for the next 4-6 weeks. I will probably take a train in to skate on the weekend a few times.

Never really spent much time in the city other than passing thru for a couple days at most. Skated the banks once as a kid. So i have no idea whats good other than just wanting to skate around and eat falafel!

Anyone wanna drop some routes for just pushing around and jamming street spots all day? And of course dm me if you wanna skate!

Thanks!!!
