donated. Hammeke is a real one, hope he fights through this.
-
This is not how I wanted to find out. Joe is a good friend. Fingers crossed for him, will definitely be donating when I get home. :'(
-
Fuck man, that's so terrible. Donating now, hoping for a strong recovery.
-
Awful. Hit that go fund me link. Best to him and his family.
-
done. sending positive vibes
-
All the best of luck to him
the US is definitely my least fav 3rd world country
-
Never have met him, but have heard so many great things about Joe. Hoping the best for him and his family.
-
Sending good vibes to Joe and his family, hoping everyone can help out if possible as I'm sure the bill will be astronomical. It sounds cliche but he truly is one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.
-
Donated a little. I was always appreciative of his photos and articles. He called skateboarders the greatest people in the world in one Thrasher article, and even though that's a simple statement that some could argue against, it was heartwarming to me when I was a kid.
-
This is truly awful, having to deal with stage 4 esophageal cancer on top of this :'(
-
Oh man. I totally missed the part about cancer. Many many good vibes going his way from me, praying for you Joe!!!
-
Woke up to this update. Awful.
Here is a note from Jess:
Dear friends -
Thank you for the overwhelming show of support for my husband Joe and our family. It’s difficult to express how much love we feel without choking up. We are incredibly grateful to the skateboarding and teamster community for spreading the word about Joe and sending messages of love, healing and support as well as donations.
As you can imagine we are in a state of shock but are doing our best to maintain. We are lucky to be surrounded by close family who have flown out to be with us. Joe’s parents and mine are here helping us cope and communicate with Joe’s doctors. Ansel and Taliesin are having a tough time without daddy but are hanging in.
It was important to Joe to get a handle on the situation before sharing more detail but it seems time. Joe was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer two weeks ago. He was prescribed a course of chemo to start at home. It was this medication that Joe reacted to resulting in a heart attack. Joe is currently in a medically induced coma. Doctors are monitoring him and trying to assess his situation. They're hoping to ween him off of sedation but there’s a lot that we won't know until more testing can be done.
Thank you again for your love and support, please keep sending positive thoughts our way. We’ll continue to update as we know more.
Love,
Jessica

Fuck, i met him a few times and he was always super kind. What a horrible thing to find out
-
Ugh....that is so terrible to read. Just cause I sort of went through that with my dad this past month. Hopefully it is a misdiagnosis for the cancer. Medical industry can be really off at times and I hope that is the case.
Also I hope he has some sort of medical coverage cause if not, this GoFundMe is going to really pay a lot.

RIP Joe.
I remember seeing Joe at one of the local parks. He was teaching the younger kids how to roll around and gave out a bunch of products to them as well. So sad that he leaves behind a wife and small kids, as well.
-
RIP Joe. You were one of a kind and did a lot to help put Midwest skaters in the mag and on the map. A true skate rat in every sense of the word. We lost another good one. Prayers to him and his family. It breaks my heart those kids are going to grow up without him there.
-
So fucking sad. Feel terrible for his fam. What a heavy week.

Didn’t realize he had passed assumed he was in a coma....
-
Way too young, this is tragic. Poor Hammeke family, my heart breaks for his wife and kids.
-
Oh man I didn't see that he passed away. This has been a rough week for sure. RIP Joe
-
Awful.
Why has it been family men with young children (Joe, Kurt Hayashi, Grosso, etc.) that have been hit so hard lately?
It's a rhetorical question of course, but goddamn does it hurt to see kids being left without a father figure at such formative ages.
Gonna miss seeing Joe's work.

Never knew he was from Nebraska. Rip in peace fellow corn man.
