Somehow was able to get an interview with Max for Heckride. He's pretty hard to get a hold of so hope you enjoy. Art by the awesome @doublesteveburger

Oh, fuck yeah. Good work as always, Monkey and all involved.
-
i love that weird recluse. had no idea he was from ohio!
-
YES YES YES YES!
Would be cool if you could get a Nik Stain or Vinny Touz interview at some point

backing this 100%
-
Aw shit yeah!
Side note too @Monkey_Mcpott, could we keep an on-going thread of these instead of individuals? It'd be dope to hold a running total and document some fire responses all in one versus broken apart, while also making access to these easy. I know we ripped Shetler apart for doing the multi-thread thing a while back about his podcast, but this is more as a compliment than a burn.
-
can really see the chad-knight-as-hometown-hero inspiration in his skating
-
damn you are seriously killing it with these guests
-
solid interview, @Monkey_Mcpott
thanks for the positive feedback everyone
-
thank you!!
-
Really sick read, thank you. I always trip out on dudes who went to college while also working and still managed to get it in on the board.

Working any kind of job that doesn't involve skateboarding will make you appreciate the time you have to skate.
-
Loving these interviews. I don't know why but I always thought he was younger than he is.
-
Damn, I didn't know any of that about Max, especially how he went to Pratt on a full scholarship and worked while he did that. Much respect for that! The story about his mom watching his part for a film class is fuckin gold too. I wish my old film classes were cool enough to cover local skate videos.
-
this is the best thing that's ever happened

This for sure. Another knock out of the park, Monk!

Yeah same, does anyone actually know his age? Is he a fair bit older than the other guys? The talk of skating a jump ramp with his brothers in the 80s kind of spun me.
Anyway, another amazing interview! Glad to hear there's no bad blood with Alex and he seemed pretty understanding about the whole thing.
Also he's such a low key dude, I never knew about his background in photography/sculpture, looks pretty cool too judging by his website. (http://www.maxspalmer.com) Cool to know there's a pro whose skating has so much personality that he doesn't have to rely on putting this aspect of him out there for marketability.

Yeah there's the whole "absence makes the heart grow fonder" aspect there. It's always impressive to me when people still find time to consistently skate on top of those other big commitments. It can require a certain level of regimented routine to your days that can also be affected by things like what type of job you have.
-
Will read in deadlock traffic on the way home from work. Another banger!

He says he graduated HS in 2006. I did too and am 32, so guessing 32/33?
-
@Monkey_Mcpott @doublesteveburger yes <3 <3 <3
-
Thank you for this!
Dude has kind of a wild life. Crazy that he works, and then still is one of the best dudes on a board (one of my favorites at least).
Hope he lands somewhere for boards. I have a feeling he doesn't even care! Max rules
-
So good when learning more about a pro who's skating you love actually makes you like them more.
-
thank you so much! had a blast reading it.
-
The more I hear from Max, the more I like him.
Its the opposite with Cyrus.
-
good interview! would have been funny if you told max who the guy was with the painted board, if you know the backstory about him.
the interview explains why no one really saw anything of him until the 2010s. it's crazy how late he started to skate seriously compared to others. how old is max? he must be in his early 30s if he finished high school in 2006 right?
EDIT nvm about the age question, i'm having a case of posting adhd, sorry

Heckride is barely five minutes old and ready to be crowned the best interview site in skateboarding.

is there footy of max and his friends skating that diy sideyard spot?
-
Monkey my friend, you’re killing it.

it is impressive but not surprising. Credit due, great variety and versatility and always some unique topics. Always thoughtful.
This max one was great, nice and long too!

It’s in the older Johnny Wilson blog videos at some point. Anyone who isn’t aware of these is in for a treat.

I’ll consider this for the next ones, didn’t think it mattered but it if it makes it easier why not.
Thanks again everyone for the kind words. Still tripping that I was able to get ahold of Max. I wasn’t sure what to expect because there isn’t really much of him out there besides his skating but he was actually really cool, smart and well spoken. Definitely support this man any way you can!
Also there’s a good amount of footage of the sideyard at the end of this video he did with Coda skateboards.

What a GET!

This was a great read. It's always fascinating to encounter someone with his talent, whose interest in skateboarding is so different from the manner in which skateboarding is sold and marketed. Someone who went all the way through a good school, worked full time in the arts, eschews social media, and never moved out to California to try and make it as a big name pro.
-
Once again slap proves that slap can industry much better than the actual skate industry can industry. Getting shit done over here great work fellas
Free max b
-
please someone pay this man to have his name on their skateboards
-
I used to live in the building on the other side of the BQE where that building with the side yard was. Was super stoked to see them build that janky ass bowl in the back. I could see them skate it from my terrace.

For sure, and I think it's what makes him and his footy so exciting. Just a man, his board, his flip phone, and his skullet doing their own thing.
-

He'll be apart of whatever Logan is gonna do. They probably aren't ready to talk about it yet.
Great work @Monkey_Mcpott
I just wish these were longer!

Sick to be introduced to new rad skaters like this. Be cool to have embedded video parts that you talk about in these interviews, especially with lesser known dudes.

Incredible work from Monkey and Double Steve.
I first saw him in an old Bronze vid with that name Loose Trucks Max. Anyone know which video it was?
He probably doesn't care but I want to get his pro model for years to come. So rare to see a pro with real jobs. And also very rad when your favorite skaters are also cool and humble humans.

Agree with this and no disrespect, but I'd also like to see all the RIP/GoFundMe stuff in a separate "child board" so it doesn't take up 35% of the front page.

Those bits on Dylan. we’re heavy. He woulda been a little older than me at this point, and while I’ve never met him his death impacted me heavily.
I can appreciate bill wanting to do different techniques since he’s been in the game forever and it’s probably boring to sit at the bottom of some stairs and film fisheye, but he cranked it to 11 and the knob fell off. I think Cherry was the sweet spot. Especially when you compare it to stallion
Keep up the good work with the interviews!
-
that one gave me a few laughs a couple tears and just some genuine smiles. amazing job y'all, as always, and thank you for providing this level of content.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! :-*
Bill was indeed really down to earth and we hit off really well.
I do agree with what @HORSES said and was already thinking about calling it quits with Pals Questions and just focusing on Heckride. It’s just much more fun and can get a better range of people involved with stuff. Plus I got tired of people telling no for interviews because it’s Slap related. I got plenty more stuff coming too so be on the lookout and shoutout to @doublesteveburger , wouldn’t want to this with anyone else. You’re the best!
-
Yeah, these are great. Glad to have these stickied (and that the amount of stickies are back under control).
-
I love it, thanks ya filthy Pals!
-
Excellent interview. Yeah that Jake story is gold. Looking forward to Bill's next project!

@Monkey_Mcpott @doublesteveburger this is one of the best Heckrides so far. Thanks dude!

Amazing interview as always. Used to look forward to chromeballs, now I look forward to these.
Zach Allen being aware of Slap’s disdain for him was almost sad, he is a talented dude. I get why Don would be so bummed about his friend (Collin) leaving, but he should also realize how it’ll improve the quality of future Toy projects.
I’ve read rumours on here regarding Jon/Cotie’s departure.. and Don refusing to open up about it makes me think he’s trying to protect the hand that feeds. Which is understandable, but disappointing.
-
Great interview.
Sad to hear about Zach. There really is some morons on here. Hating on the guy for no reason.
Wonder what the story behind Cotie Robinson and John Clemmons is.
-
@Monkey_Mcpott @doublesteveburger such a good one. I kind of want to go back and listen to that Dirty Beaches song and then the cover version. You could tell he was so psyched you noticed. The Turtle Boy portrait was extra great. I hope they ask you to make it into a board or something.
-
Love that addressed many questions that have been brewing on Slap
I guess it’s sad Zach knows people don’t like what he does, but it’s just the feedback and athlete/performer/etc would get. It’s hardly like it infringes on his personal life or gets personally nasty so I don’t think people on here need to cluck like hens about it.
-
Looking forward to that Myles Willard part!
I’ll always love Toy and F, Don is the best.
keep these coming!!
-
One of the good things about this interview is that Don didn't shy away from diving into why older companies suck. It's completely true and once companies go down that route, they normally don't go back - Powell, World, etc. Yeto and Girl/Choc seem to be following the same path. It's possible that they can rebuild themselves to the point they were at before, you could say. Who knows?
-
Although it wasnt intended to be funny, I got a good laugh out of this line:
After Dekline went out of business I had all this Jeremy Leabres footage that went to his Reeducation part. I had filmed so much of that part, I’d say about 80% of it and remember watching it over with [Mike] Sinclair and telling him how they are about to owe me thousands of dollars for this footage (laughs). Then Mike says “Hell nah! We’re not going to pay you for that footage. You’re just going to work for Toy now.”
-
thanks for the positive feedback gents, monkey and I love doing these for the culture <3

He doesn’t post here and no one (as far as I know) is going to his personal social media pages to talk shit. No one is being shitty to him in person so it isn’t harassment and i don’t think sharing a negative opinion on a message board constitutes bullying. He’s choosing to look and see what’s being said, no ones forcing or coercing him to see what people don’t like about him.
-
glad he's been spotlighted. programming injection is one of my fav videos of the past few years. i've gotten into so many bands because of the song choices. i was also confused why that one song sounded so much like dirty beaches but actually wasn't

Great job as always. Was hoping for a little further insight into Merlino and that situation. Or maybe it's already been covered elsewhere and I just missed it.

@Monkey_Mcpott @doublesteveburger
Great work guys! I realized I thumb through magazines (Thrasher) now once or twice maybe. Interviews are often so formulaic that it is boring as hell. For example, "So.... when did you start skating?"
The questions asked to the guests in these interviews are so well thought out and specific that they incentivize the reader to keep going. The selection of interviewees is also on point.
I must admit, while I don't really care about the, "So how'd you start skating?" question, setup questions are a guilty pleasure of mine.
Heckride is doing big things and I look forward to what you put out next
-

Sounds like his knee is fucked, that isn't cheap to fix, and I doubt he has the sponsors to help him cover it. Both Leabres and Victor Aceves have also completely fucked their knee.

This might sound naive but given the craziness of the US health system and inherent danger of skating, do many sponsors provide health insurance or is this part of the contractors vs employees issue of skating?

To the best of my knowledge, no sponsor pays for health insurance. They are private contractors. But, I do believe certain companies help out bigger names. I believe Nike helped out Malto when he blew out his ankle, and provided access to rehabilitation facilities they have (probably a benefit no one thinks about when people sign with a brand like Nike or Adidas).

But also it seems like no mid-level (in other words, non-superstar) is making a liveable wage either. Overheads for insurance are really really high, especially for high risk athletes. If no companies are paying a living wage to skate to begin with, what makes anyone think they would add on and extra $8 to $10 grand a year, per person?
Clearly the financial model in skating is pretty busted and unsustainable if dudes have to work at the beer store or drive uber just to pay their rent, much less get health insurance.
So yeah, lets raise deck prices.

Who knows?
I've thought about this a bunch, and I think if you draw a parallel to the music industry things become a little more clear, because basically the skateboard industry markets an artform to sell a product, just the the record industry.
If you think about it, there are always hot new record labels with deep underground connections and a fresh take. these will always be cooler. same with skate brands. but they're also very unstable, pretty fickle, don't usually have enough people in leadership or administrative positions, and usually aren't distributed that well, and most of them don't actually last because they're run by artists who have no actual taste for rote, repetitive, thankless work of keeping a company afloat (9 1 7 !)
but in the record industry, there are also independent labels that just grew and grew over the years, and at some point just aren't that trendy or cool anymore. however, some of them stick around, and they have enough of a platform, distribution, and capital that to create a sustainable industry for mid-level talent, or people that aren't super cool or underground or well connected in some scene. I'm thinking of labels like Warp or Matador or whatever. they've created a machine that can sustain itself and crank out product on a relentless basis. they can help new people reach a huge audience and even make a decent living, way more than the smaller labels.
I'm stretching the analogy a little bit, but that's how I see "old" brands like Flip, Tum Yeto, Baker, Girl, etc. In no way are they as cool as they were in the mid 90s, and there's no way they could ever be. people do their best, most pure shit when they're living 12 to a house and driving a shitty van around the country and living off $2 a day. and stuff is always better when its fresh. BUT! These brands have a huge platform, experience, stability, capital, wisdom, marketing, distribution etc that they can offer skaters, and that is very very very sick if we want to have a conversation about things like compensation, health insurance, etc and the sustainability of a skate career. they also offer a family to people who might have a little more standard lifestyle, and whose idea of fun isn't doing acid with Dill in a room full of balloons or whatever, dudes who just want to skate and don't really click with the art or high culture stuff (which is increasingly fine by me, Supreme is pretty exhausting).
So I guess my answer to the question is: no fucking way will they ever be as "cool" or "big", but that's besides the point, maybe we're looking on the wrong axis of the graph. they can offer something different to young, trendy brands and I think there's room for everything and that's healthy.
and also, i truly believe that certain people get a lifetime pass and a comfortable living because of the shit they did in 1996 or whatever. and that definitely includes Ed, Jamie, Mike, Rick, Megan, Reynolds and dare I say it even that Ian guy from flip (he bankrolled Penny). who gives a shit if their brand is fresh or not.

would love to see some graphics he likes or what kind of art direction is more his cup of tea. kinda get the polar trendy sentiment

I always sort of marvel at dudes who turn down being pro and whatnot. Like I admire the sort of commitment to and purity of the vision, but at the same time I would be so stoked to have a pro board for Polar. Curious what the graphic was. Also didn’t realize Johnny was his brother.
I know this has been sort of been gone over before, but I feel like when the thread is stickied it just sort of becomes invisible as part of the background and I don’t always notice when it’s gets bumped.

I believe the same was said when it wasn't stickied, guess you can't win either way :-\
I do have a plenty more coming though for anyone wondering, hopefully more consistently.

Especially given how, based on the jobs he’s worked, he doesn’t exactly come from money and would greatly benefit from advancing his skate career. Part of me respects him for being so picky and part of me is like damn dude what’re you doing.
-
After reading the part about him not being stoked on the song he skated to in the Polar video, I had to revisit it. Honestly, I personally think it goes really well with his skating, but it is his skating and clips and I gotta respect that.

Not sure why you gotta be a snarky dickhead about it ::). In his most recent part he is skating predominantly Janoski's.
Didn't know he was on 917 originally. Don't think he gets on Hockey, and for some reason I don't see him on Logan's company.

in John's Vid they were all wearing a lot of janoskis it seemed, maybe aside from max. i'm assuming nike wanted them to push those shoes, could be wrong though
also, he certainly made himself sound hard to work with haha

I get wanting to be psyched on the companies you ride for but both polar and alltimers have had pretty consistent vibes even in their early days. You would think he would consider that before agreeing to ride for them.

As much as I love the dude's skating, leaving two companies for pretty much the same reason of aesthetics sorta starts to sound like that's a you problem. Polar wanting to turn him pro seems kinda decent of them, I'm not sure he'd get the same treatment at deluxe - even Hockey maybe. Being on Polar kind of gave him another outlet to be recognised imo, not just being the guy that's sandwiched in between Cyrus & Max. Sorry if that comes off harsh but both their styles are so distinctive it's hard to sit in the middle and stand out as much. I'm not tryna hate on the dude at all! I just wanna see him get the shine he deserves, I'm not even sure Hockey would give that tbh.

Well Casper really is such a big guy and there is sort of a delicacy to his skating. He’s also either going to make the trick or explode and land on his face. I remember [Nick] Jensen put it the best way, he’s like a hippo playing the violin (laughs).

I feel like we did talk about this briefly in one of the conversations we had prior to the interview. He also goes on record to say he’s not the best at logging tapes so I’m sure that had something to do with it. There’s usually a lot more that we talk about that doesn’t go into these interviews, I try to go out of my way to keep these at a certain length so that you could read them in about 10-15 minutes.

I’ll have to watch his Sr. Palmer part again. I have been to Milford, CT many many times for business. It’s a beautiful idyllic New England town but I could see a lot of born there die there in that area. It’s hard to give up a Dunkin’ Donuts every 5 minutes.

You ended up going with Chad and a few other riders to start Mother which then became Quasi skateboards. Even though things worked out for you guys, did you have any negative feelings towards Alien when they came back in business a few months after they fired everyone on team?
Yeah! For sure, I still think it’s wack right now.

yo! this was great, just wanted to point out a possible spelling mistake.
How was it quitting Blackbox, did Jamie take it hard?
So once the possibility of me riding started to become more real, Jamie is getting word that I’m talking to those guys. So he’s blowing me up and I wasn’t trying to avoid him but I was just telling him that nothing was going on. Once Chad (Bowers) confirms with me that everyone is down for me to be on the team I take a flight to San Diego so that I could talk to amie personally. We sit down in his office and just tell him that I was quitting for Alien and the first thing he says is “You should have just told me over the phone” (laughs). I just had a lot of respect for Jamie so I figured this was worthy of a face-to-face conversation instead of calling or texting him on the phone. I still am grateful for everything he did for me since he basically put me on the map, but he was pissed for sure.

Thanks man! That really means a lot! In all seriousness though for anyone that cares, all of these interviews happen after at least 2 conversations that usually last a few hours each. We usually just dig for stories, go over notes or just shoot the shit on the first conversation. Then by the second one, that’s recorded, I know what to ask and what will be a good story. By then too we are more acquainted so I think that helps it feel like we’ve had more than in conversation before and we're just a couple of friends just talking.
Not everything you research leads to a good story which is why having an interview on a first conversation with someone usually never leads to a good interview, in my opinion. Also if there’s something obvious or something that looks like it didn’t get asked, I more than likely asked it and it either didn’t lead to a good story or the person didn’t want to talk about it on record. I don’t like wasting peoples time with a half ass interview so I try my best to put a lot of effort into each one. Thanks to everyone for the kind words, it really pumps me up to keep these things going and there’s for sure plenty more to come.

Ethan Hawke…but he wouldn’t go on the record

thanks for the kind words everyone, @Monkey_Mcpott for sure has some serious interviewing chops and they’re only getting better
we got some cool shit down the pipeline and can’t wait to work on these endlessly with great company
-
these have all been really sick. is this replacing pals questions or are you still going to do both? i enjoy them both a lot, though this is obviously formatted a bit better and is more insightful at times. it’s just cool to feel apart of an interview as a random person online so, i think that’s what makes the pals questions such a collective thing.
-
This was seriously an awesome interview. the 2 conversation approach is year 3000 thinking, ive never done anything even approaching journalism so never would have never thought about that, but you can tell it helps. These are great.

wow, Jimmy Arrighi. now that's a name i haven't heard in a minute!
-
The way that Blackbox hazes new team members is making them room with Dane Burman... sounds brutal
-
Sounds like Corey Glick is planning on sticking with Foundation? Gotta respect that, but can't say I'd be doing the same...
-
Corey is such a cool dude. I remember meeting him the night Souvenir premiered in Long Beach and dude was hyped on everyone cheering him on all night for that part.
-
yeah, corey is the shit. i used to see him around a bit and despite me being a nobody he would always remember me and say whats up. really cool dude
well done again
-
Sounds like Corey Glick is planning on sticking with Foundation? Gotta respect that, but can't say I'd be doing the same...
Sounds like Aiden, Joey, and Dakota are probably the main reasons he's still around. He's one of the OGs left.
Also, as much as he deserves better than Foundation, I think it would've been weirder to see him on Deathwish.
-
good stuff per usual, was waiting to hear about quasi though and what thats all about
-
@Monkey_Mcpott @doublesteveburger the hits keep coming. Corey is sick. If he begins doing Foundation gear I'd be interested to see what he comes up with. I certainly like the stop motion he and his girlfriend have made.

Didn't Gil also have the chance to ride for FA? He's riding FA boards in some of the raw files of Propeller.
Never noticed that but pretty wild. That's would be a crazy alternate timeline.
I like that he isn't afraid to say nowadays Alien is wack.
I think he was just skating then post-AWS collapse and while filming Propeller while Quasi was getting set up. I vaguely remember hearing or being told that.
-
Hey I recently said he’s too good for Foundation on slap! I’m part of the process!
-
I haven't been much attention to these interviews because skate Interviews often are boring as hell but I thoroughly enjoyed the last two. Great job @Monkey_Mcpott, I will definitely come here more often.
I thought it is interesting what Gilbert said about Slap and how us roasting someone like Berle for his fits (and the change of fits) could really affect their mood. Being mean on the internet can be fun of course but if it is channeled towards a person it can become bullying very quickly. We should consider this more often.

Tomorrow makes 1 year since me and @doublesteveburger started this thing and it’s crazy to see how much we’ve done in that time. Got plenty more things coming for this next year, really stoked.

it sucks that isle is sort of dead, but hopefully casper and the others can get their own thing or atlantic drift skateboards going. and maybe isle can build up and update again with new rippers.
casper seems like a cool as fuck person.

Great inteview @Monkey_Mcpott I'm a huge fan of his stuff. Might just be me, but between Palace and Atlantic drift (dating back to Lost and Found), London footage has probably always been my favorite city to see footage from. Hard as fuck to skate and crusty spots.

@Monkey_Mcpott that was sick as always, thank you. never really heard much from ben but have always dug that he is a real music nerd cuz he was posting crimpshrine/fifteen/random hc records back in the day which i thought was rad.
this quote sealed the deal on him being a nerd diggin thru blogspots in the mediafire/megaupload days lol
"I spent so much of my teenage years on all these cutty blogs looking for new and obscure bands that nobody knew about, I just wasn’t down to give any of that away to a bunch of skaters that probably don’t care. I know it comes off snotty and annoying but it’s just a personal thing."

I mean, asking someone if they’d jerk off to a skate video isn’t actually funny or clever. Can’t blame the guys for not wanting to get interviewed from people with that kind of “research”.
Based on the conversations I’ve had with Ben for this interview I can honestly say that he’s a genuinely nice guy. I’m stoked his personality showed in the interview and people have a better perspective of what Ben is about.

Jenkem sucks and can/will be easily replaced by Heckride and these amazing interviews.

ugghh no more hardcore 2022

I don't partake lightly in intellectual snobbery and I still regret buying Kyle Beachy's skate book, but anybody getting mad at that Jenkem 917 article is just offended by all those big words and syntax structures they missed out on while stoned in class. I mean, you only gotta watch a couple Dill or AVE interviews to realize it's not exactly smartie country over there.

I do appreciate your interviews but showing this kind of blatant ignorance about the roots of pulp skateboard journalism which come from exactly the era that the entire FA aesthetic references to death isn't a good look. Open any copy of big brother and the outfits will look like they got pulled straight through a wormhole. Read up on your Carnie (and Nieratko, in moderation) will ya. You might learn a thing or two, specifically that a great interviewer shouldn't just be a big fan fanboy.
That aside, I actually agree that the weird sexual questions are well left to the shameful past. But still, you gotta acknowledge the reference they were trying to pull. I for one am all in favour of forgiving the odd misguided move to the ONE media outlet in skateboarding that dares sometimes raise a critical voice. Which is the very essence of journalism.

I already liked Ben before this (unpopular opinion on here I know), but I don't think I've ever actually read or heard an interview from him and I like him even more now. coincidentally a lot of nazis in the lehigh valley- not to imply they are about that whatsoever. cold world is sick but it’s a strange band to be hyped on in 2022

I think his expansion is important though, basically saying if you are a Neo-Nazi into hardcore, you're missing a big, important part of the hardcore ethos so fuck off. We can quibble on how true that is in practice, but he's describing an ideal ideology.

Great interview as usual guys!

Thank you heckride for reminding me about his November part. I can't believe it's almost 8 years old now. Funny to see young Tyson squealing at the end. The Cherry Glazerr song rules, too.

@doublesteveburger the illustration is so good.

Great interview, Franky seems to be the nicest dude.
-
Curious about the bad batch of boards that he got hurt on - seemed kinda serious.
Doesn't primitive use BBS for their US boards?
-
MAAAAN that was good. what a shy humble wizard. I love you Franky!

I mean, asking someone if they’d jerk off to a skate video isn’t actually funny or clever. Can’t blame the guys for not wanting to get interviewed from people with that kind of “research”.
Ok boomer. Focus.

I am so tired of these kinds of interviews.
"And then X introduced me to Y and Y gave me boards...yaaawn"
That shit is so boring. Almost like a badly written report in a school paper by a 12 year old.
If people would ask me shit like that I would probably share his negative attitude towards interviews in general.
If you don´t have to say something of relevance it is better to not say anything.
The same goes for the interviewers: If you don´t have any relevant questions beyond "who sponsored you first" just let it go. It is going to be shit anyway.

I remember watching this when it came out and geeking out over it with one of my old skate homies. Found out about Cherry Glazerr through this vid and eventually saw em in SF. Good times.

Way to be a kook. Try putting in the work to make a website with unique art & interviews yourself; then feel free to talk your shit. Disrespectful.
