Surprised to see there isn't a thread on this already. Toy instagram says video comes out on Monday on Thrasher site. Hoping for a comeback part from Jeremy Labres.
-
It's because Toy machine isn't so relevant these days, i love toy dont get me wrong before you guys kook the shit out of me, but it's what i'm seeing on slap
-
I don’t follow Toy, but stoked for the video. Would love some Ed footage, but I’m not holding my breath.
They had a lot of injection motifs, so the title fits, but ToyAnon is another good name

no one is. it's a dead company.
so dead, they couldn't even be bothered to make a poster/ flyer/ art for the video.
just pixelated 50's style JPEGs pulled off Google arranged in an IG Story.
...from Ed Templeton's company

Also with rumours of provost leaving I wonder if he has any footage? Or if this will be his last footage dump if rumours are true?

In that super longwinded thrasher interview with MJ he seemed to allude to this dude being a kook by assuring everyone that he is not a kook. Said something like "he's misunderstood". idgaf I just wanna see that treflip noseslide on the oceanside

Hmm tough call. He's paid his dues in skating so he doesn't owe us anything. His injuries were pretty rough. I would be happy to see an Ed feeble, or noseblunt though.

They both recently followed each other on Instagram, he also followed Don Luong. Dashawn is close with Mike Sinclair as well. Toy Machine have been pushing a 'surprise' part as well for this video. Dashawn's 'Pro' part never came out.

well damn. i back him having a legit board sponsor all the way. toy definitely wouldn’t be my first guess but, a lot of people don’t fit on certain companies and we seem to grow used to it. let’s just see how his part fits in this new video. since the comments have already been made, it’s funny to think that the other black guy that should’ve been on toy (besides forrest) is on primitive now. we never thought tre williams would fit on primitive before he stopped dressing like jeremy leabres, now it seems to make the most sense. primitive would’ve been my guess for dashawn before this so, maybe this will be yet another surprising fit. also, isn’t maldonado black obviously or at least mixed?

Dashawn doesn’t fit the Toy Machine that most of us wish it still was, but when they put on Collin and CJ it became obvious that they’ve changed, and need to put on goobers who appeal to children in order to sell boards and stay afloat.

quick, theres still time to reupload the vid without dashawns lazer back lip.
-
Only 80 people watching and the live chat barely made it past a handful of comments.
No real thoughts on the other video, other than good for the flow kids getting some shine, but huge ass titles for flow kids is just real weird. The whole video was just edited super weirdly.
-
Even if it's a weird fit, Dashwn addition is great, there're some insane tricks on his part
Braden Hoban part was really good too, it's a breath of fresh air
-
Provost officially of then it appears. That Braden guy seems like a good fit to pass the California rail kid torch to.
-
Gersh grind through the kinks was insane.
-
That video was... idk... laser flip backlip... yeah
-
part was great but, the song/edit felt like a big reach for trapasso nostalgia. dude is on another level though. if you wanna have a long respectable career just do what nick t should’ve done and throw those lazers in the trash.
-
Solid video. Dashawn’s courthouse trick was fucked up
Braden’s flip front blunt on tranq was wild
Jay Richards coming thru for Texas
-
https://youtu.be/jxndVxM9BxE?t=408
-
Dashawns part looked like he shopped around his Business and Company footage as a Sponsor Me tape and Toy Machine was the first (or only) company that was down.
-

Santo and Johnny's Sleepwalk, and all other similar songs, when used in a skate part, will obviously be compared to Trapasso's part, which is un-fucking-beatable in terms of pairing music to style. Not sure what they were thinking here.

Surprised toy only has 40 subs on yt. Zero has over 20k.
-
I liked the opening montage. Most of Dashawn's part was sick but the laser flip back lip and Trepasso-esque song were all I could think about.
That Braden Hoben guy was good but I hope he's not the next guy Emerica is gonna push for. Please mix it up, for the love of god.
I also think sponsoring very young children is kinda fucked, but that's a whole other topic.
-
That was one part and a friends section. Not a video. That being said I really enjoyed all the footage.
-
Really enjoyed that. That little kid with the fro is gonna go far if he keeps it up.
Was surprised at how much I liked Dashawn's part. I think the problem I've had with his skating before may come down to editing because I thoroughly liked this part. Does he fit our image of what we've always imagined Toy to be? Not at all, but maybe that's alright. I do wanna know why he's so young but got a Bic Baldhead.
-

I get the point you’re trying to make, toy machine isn’t popular or whatever but this thinking is exactly what Ed made toy for.
I imagine the premier for live! Wasn’t packed either. I think it’s rad that not a lot of people watched the live premier. Don’t necessarily get the obsession with something having to be validated by views.
Toy appeal to me has always been that’s it’s weird and turns off most people. I can remember being really young watching jump off a building and my friends being un interested after 30 seconds of little toys flashing on the screen. They were obsessed with the storm and josh kasper lol. none of them skate anymore....... I’m still watching toy videos
-
Surprised toy only has 40 subs on yt. Zero has over 20k.
this is like the first thing they ever posted i think
kinda weird to drop a video with very little promotion on a channel that doesnt quite get used
-
Dashawn part of the year, for sure.
SOTY.
-
someone save Myles Willard from this sinking ship.
-
Well at least it wasn’t very long.
-
Slap: Quasi skter overcroock a nine stair rail for his debut pro part: cool gnarly, masterpiece.
Any other skater Doing overcroocked in a kinkle rail: they used trapasso vibes on song, meh.
-
yes because skating is about tricks and whoever does the most hellride tricks wins the game
-
did he put out any footage for B&C? or did he really go pro with zero footage and immediately dip?
-
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It won't go into my top tier category but it was fun
-
I enjoyed it, but I also liked “Programming Injection” so make of that what you will.
Also, Braden Hoban is that guy. God damn.
-
wow they really tried to do nick trapasso again
the only vaccine this company needs is euthanasia
-
did he put out any footage for B&C? or did he really go pro with zero footage and immediately dip?
Makes me question if Toy brought him on as pro or if they booted him down back to am status in order to prove it — which this video shows he will if he has to.
-
That double circle grind was shocking, and should be the main topic of conversation here. I always wondered when someone would do a full circle, and that only just happened at that same spot. That was like a video game trick.
Someone please put in the effort to make that an infinite gif.
-
Dashawn works fine on Toy for me. They haven't had much consistency in riders, really, ever, which is why I always preferred them to say Zero. They had Muska and pre fake rocker Jamie Thomas, then BA, Staba, and Steamer none of whom were that similar. Even after their crew felt diverse enough in tricks that the main consistencies were Dickies style pants, some rails, and Ed's art.
-
The double circle grind fucked me up.

For real that was the most shocking trick in the vid for sure.
The video was pretty sick, more like a promo with a few tricks from the dudes plus a couple introductory part. Braden Hoban did some fucked up shit while still having a dope style. I thought this might be the first time Ive seen Theshawns skating presented properly. Its common knowledge that he rips but Ive always perceived him as a wacky contest dude, cool to see him in a proper company video with a part. The backside nosegrind through the double kink and the ender are heavyyyy
-
definitely prepared for people who were complaining about Toy's lack of diversity to now say that Dashawn doesn't fit the Toy Machine image.
-
Sound track sucked but otherwise the skating was great. I don't think there will ever be a legit "Hawaiian" song edit like Trepassos in suffer the joy. That double circle grind was absolutely fucked along with Dashaun Jordan's ender.
-
The Toy Machine hate is so weird. I mean, who cares? They do the young handrail chomper/ripper thing well and fuck, I am in my 40s and I still think their product looks fine. idk man, go to the Graig Top apology thread and stop inventing hate for a brand that hasnt really done anything wrong, they just are what they are.
And if theyre struggling, then idk how they make so much fucking product. their catalog is totally absurd. Maybe its not the smartest of business but theyve been doing it for 25 years soooo.....
-
soundtrack sounds like they tried to pay as little as possible for rights. thats why videos that don't actually go for the song rights are always 100x better (917, hockey, quasi, etc) it's like toy WANTS you to fall asleep from boredom watching it
regardless, dashawn killed it. i saw people in another thread speculating that he's a kook but i've actually heard that he's a super cool dude. I think he just has that lingering sls/sovrn stigma
-
Dashawn is fucking amazing.
-
As I watch a new Toy Machine skater i've never heard of go on a kickflip-into-handrail barrage akin to Jon Allie in Dying To Live twenty years ago, i reflect on how little it moves me, and stare into the endless abyss of my mortality - having now exhausted myself of floppy haired t-shirt people skateboarding handrails among quirky text overlays, was it my time to die? Each song, each animation, a simulacrum of a an actual childhood, rhyming roughly with the well-trod path that was laid for it long ago, and yet hollow, a pale reflection of a poem now forgotten, saddled with favors past.
The aesthetic presents itself as if it does not care, in the way a rebellious child doesn't, but it's clear that it does. God, it so, so, does. It has settled into its lot, and settled for the long haul, like the friend we all have who married early and soldiers on, a husk of a person turning their hamster wheel all day every day, not daring to stop for fear of losing what little inertia they have
Some relief washes over me as I accept that I have squeezed all the joy I can out of this format, the "toy machine video", and now I can move on to the next plane of existence, as my ancestors have for time immemorial. I give thanks for the thing that it was, and set both it and myself aflame.
-
Braden is sooooo fucking good wow. Dashawn rips obviously and I enjoyed his part, but man it is weird seeing a dude in a Redbull beanie skating for Toy.
Anyone else weirded out by the editing on his fakie flip over that gate? Cuts to a different angle mid-trick which sucks because I liked the original angle better, they must have goofed on the filming.
-
Such a tough, cool-guy crowd in here. That video was sick.
Braden dude's part was nuts and back half of his part had Billy Marks G&E vibes.
Dashawn's part was fucked, regardless of Trapasso vibes. Bummer that people always find something to hate on him for. Skates fast, makes tough shit look equal parts easy and sketch, but gets ragged on him for being too nice(?), wearing shorts, being too "athlete", whatever. He fucking rips and deserved last part, especially on something other than Business & Company.
-
I think this is the most promising team Toy Machine has had in years.
With that being said, this video would have been much more enjoyable if they didn't use the same fake "pop" sound on every other trick. Did that bother anyone else?
-
This was really fucking good through and through.

Definitely an improvement over the last one but man these modern Toy videos do not hold a candle to either of the previous coveted eras of Toy. The editing just makes it feel like a caricature of its former self.

fully agree, i knew who i was talking about but had to check their ig to remember his name. dashawn fits, i dont really see the nick trapasso comparison. dashawn has a very solid style and unique trick selection so im down, but that being said im not a toy person generally
-
Being first exposed to toy machine from jump off a building and heavy metal instead of good and evil etc. may be why I don’t see how dashawn doesn’t fit. I feel he does fit on classic toy machine before the right pants and rails toy. Maybe they are trying go back to the roots of toy. I agree with @HotnSpicyMcChicken it’s weird to see a red bull baby on toy. Dashawn fits fine Red Bull baby not so much.
-
I agree the laser back lip was a rough start but I liked Dashawns part and thought the song was a good choice. It sticks out but it’s also mellow.
Also think it’s cool that there are people of all different ages, ethnicities, and sexes mixed in who all rip.
My biggest gripe is the overly polished look of the animations and CJ Collins.
Matt B sighting!
-
Is that the first female bump to bar?
Jordan’s part was absolutely wild, I liked the song, it’s no trapasso part but that’s because it 2021 and we’re saturated with insane skating on the daily.

I will go out to say that lazer lip was the only trick i didn't like. I still think its a weird fit for toy but maybe thats what they need. Braden is cool too. Myles is my favorite on the roster. Now just revamp some of those graphics, get rid of the red bull beaning apparatus, and toy is looking good.

Dashawn's part was pure insanity, the fs flip up the stairs!!!!
The song didn't do him any favors, I'm guessing they were going for nostalgia / tie-back to trapasso with the AZ connection but it didn't really work. The soundtrack overall was very strange

I've personally seen leo fuck up ledges at a spot and at skateparks around where I grew up. Dude should seriously transition into filming that more. Dude takes 2 more pushes than necessary at ledges. Fastest switch back tail i've witnessed.

i don't know what is going on in this thread with all the negative comments. this was a great clip, perfect length, editing was sick, titles and weird quotes were great, flow kids skating to just pulsating noise was amazing. dashawn did not have a single "whatever" clip in his whole part, bangers only, and he's smooth as shit. the ladies had some crazy shit in here too, can't wait to see more from them. blake carpenter is dependable and the new kid Braden had some serious mind melters. that japanese hoody kid did a hardflip down like 17 stairs or something.
I know it's easy to just be like "old company bad" but lets try a little harder you weirdos.

Surprised toy only has 40 subs on yt. Zero has over 20k.
this is like the first thing they ever posted i think
kinda weird to drop a video with very little promotion on a channel that doesnt quite get used
Maybe they realized that Thrasher is a middle man and they need to build their own following.
-
It's Sinclair's company....
-
That shit was impossible to hate. Awesome vid. Toy machine remains sick as shit.
-
Toy is going the way of Flip, Enjoi and other board brands where they’ve strayed away from their foundational team identity and just started adding based off of overall talent rather than all around style. Also, I feel bad for Braden Hoban because that is a name no one should have that isn’t 16 and that he’s that talented but won’t be doing better financially for a bit than a Tum Yeto and an Emerica paycheck.
And Dashawn needs to lay off the hats because that bald head really pulls focus on the few clips it was out. It’s not getting enough sun. (If this is a medical issue, I sincerely apologize, but based on his board graphic I don’t think it is)
-
This feels the same as Alien 2.0 except toy never went out of business. Chasing the old aesthetic with a team like the current one just feels so heartless. That being said, I really enjoyed dashawns part besides the trick that shall not be named. I'm almost upset with myself that braden's part did nothing for me. Some obvious stand outs (massive kink rail, kickflip 5-0) but overall its incredible and also overwhelming how good unknown kids are these days.
Sinclair to toy is soon to be Scuba to skate mental.
P.S. Leo still has it
-
Can't sign on the Toy Machine hate either. I think there's always a place for the bloodsucking skateboard company on the shelves and Toy has been doing their own thing since for ever.
Of course Jump off A Building and Welcome to Hell are classics and it's pretty hard to replicate that in 2021 as what comes today is forgotten by next week and there's only couple videos that will make a lasting impact on skateboarding like those two did. But even then Toy Machine was the company had that had the new talent and when they bailed (and that happened before Welcome to hell too), the team got rebuild and the company continues and now there's people who been on for over ten years in addition to new rippers.
Enjoyed the video and really liked that there was a flow-part too. I get if people didn't like hearing two Ian Mackaye bands, but I think Toy Machine is akin to Dischord, so I think it fits.
-
remember when toy machine released a board with graphics done by a man who had recently been charged 18 times including rape, grievous bodily harm and drug possession, and instead of recalling the boards, all they did was take down the instagram post? haha yeah toy is so sick

Toy is one of the all time greats.
Look idiots on here will complain because it's the cool thing to do if your company is a legacy company.
It's either they change too much..... Change too little....
Or else the current video isn't like old video..... That was released 20 years ago.... Filmed on VX and edited on some two bit hacked together old mac.
At the end of the day the pal group think on here doesn't reflect what normal skaters think. So I wouldn't worry about it.
-
Toy Machine is in my opinion the company who has had the most longevity without ever really going into kook territory - The animations was very teenage-appealing, but I think I might just begin to be an elderly fart!
This format is great for the YouTube era - really happy to see it, and now I'm a fan of Dashawn and Braden (also we got that super loop gif! I hope it is okay if I snatch it for my signature <3 - great job!)
-
It was a good video - but it’s not that Toy Machine because Ed’s basically ceded control of it so it’s just a place to stick riders rather than a cultivated team. It’s lasted so long because the original logos are so iconic that you can milk the fists, the two monster logos, devil cat et al for another decade
-
Man i love Dischord records
-
Dashawn works fine on Toy for me. They haven't had much consistency in riders, really, ever, which is why I always preferred them to say Zero. They had Muska and pre fake rocker Jamie Thomas, then BA, Staba, and Steamer none of whom were that similar. Even after their crew felt diverse enough in tricks that the main consistencies were Dickies style pants, some rails, and Ed's art.
don't forget they had Kalis on at one point too

I wonder how KB is in every fucking where.

I really enjoyed that.
For his last ten tricks or so I thought with every Dashawn trick “okay this is definitely the ender”. God damn.
-
Fuck all the hate, that video was flawless. Dashawn is a beast.
-
As I watch a new Toy Machine skater i've never heard of go on a kickflip-into-handrail barrage akin to Jon Allie in Dying To Live twenty years ago, i reflect on how little it moves me, and stare into the endless abyss of my mortality - having now exhausted myself of floppy haired t-shirt people skateboarding handrails among quirky text overlays, was it my time to die?
I give thanks for the thing that it was, and set both it and myself aflame.
lol
-
just wanting to add more positivity here, i loved this. dashawn and cj are weird fits, but it seems to work for the dynamic. loved the soundtrack and really need to spend time with ian mackaye's work.
definitely been a toy machine fan since thps1 (JOAB was my first skate video), which makes sense because i'm an artist. love their music choices, art, animation, even though i'm 33. it's silly and i love that. i still regularly watch programming injection, especially myles' part.
ed has for sure done sketchy shit but toy machine is bigger than he is, and i'm happy about that.
-
Going to go against the grain here and say that the laserflip back lip was cool

From a pacing standpoint shouldn't the Braden part have been first? Braden > Team montage > Dashawn.
Maybe leave the flow kids for a seperate clip.

Nope. Having flow kids in your edit is a sick move, especially for an established company. It's rad to get them little dudes and dudettes some time to shine.

Reading through these comments is kind of wild. People hate everything.
One of the only older brands that is able to continuously pull off the same brand aesthetic and style despite so many iterations and different people riding for them.
Ed has been through it all and keeps it going to this day. Im genuinely curious what brands people who hate toy machine actually like. Cant fade the Tempster
Edit: dashawn's noseblunt on that flat white rail was my favorite clip. Unreal.

It’s not that hard to maintain the same aesthetic when one guy does 99% of the art. However, that one guy has admitted that he’s basically checked out of any day to day ops, so it isn’t quite like it is the same brand.
I don’t think anyone HATES Toy Machine, I think people revere it enough that they want it to remain a special thing and not just a bunch of good skaters that Nike hooks up and wants to position on board brands they like.

Yeah, but isn't some of this subjective? I was a child when I saw JOAB (it was my first skate video!), so it's going to resonate harder for me than this project. That doesn't make this project inferior - I'm just 35 now.
Don't get me wrong - I'm super guilty of this thinking too. I remember walking out of the Mindfield premiere in 2009 and feeling like, "Yea it was cool but it wasn't Photosynthesis or Mosaic." Obviously, history has proven me wrong and that's a great vid that has aged super well.
Don't even get me started on music.. your favorite band could make the best album of their career tomorrow and it'll never mean as much as the one you had when you were 14. You'll listen to it a handful of times then forget about it - or best case scenario there are one or two tracks that make it onto your Spotify playlists. (I am 100% guilty of this as well.)
Maybe that's a whole other layer of this. I was forced to watch JOAB 4,000,000 times because it was all I had. I'll watch this one... once or twice? How could that even have a fighting chance to win me over in the same way - even if this was 1998 again.
Wanting Toy Machine to call it quits after the video that affected you as young man is kind of a selfish take. Ed Templeton put his whole life into that brand and he should be able to take as far as he wants... it's not on him if you (or I) choose to leave the journey before he's done with it.

I just rewatched Joab, suffer the joy, and good and evil after seeing Nos’ post. You’re totally right, both of you. Still I feel like this one is comparable to baker4, pretty sweet, plan b’s true or the newer deathwish video. In the since of a legacy company making a video showcasing their new talent but ultimately you end up watching it like twice and then never again. Again totally subjective.

Would be cool but nowadays it seems like companies are less keen on holding footage for a long time. I think full lengths are just less preferred too like you said. I enjoy them but my buddy who's 19 probably couldn't even make it through a 20 minute video, same with other younger locals

I hear you that it would have been "complete", but i kinda disagree that it woulda been better.
Programming Injection was 40 minutes. That, to me, is the absolute upper ceiling of length. I think 20 minutes is the sweet spot. Skate videos being 60 minutes in the 90's/2000's has more to do with having the video be worth the investment into VHS/DVD production and distribution, than a 60 minute skate vid being a piece of media that makes sense to watch in one sitting.
Also Programming injection came out in 2019. From a marketing standpoint it doesn't make any sense for them to sit on footage for another 2 years waiting for everyone else to stack enough. might as well release what you have in two shorter videos.
-
20 minutes was perfect. These days I'm not sure many people have the attention span to watch something for an hour.

If you meany the 90s-00's it was Ed. I think prior to Brainwash, Sinclair joined but unsure of his role. Swank has probably had a hand it somewhat too.
The biggest thing for mine is Toy failed to put out anything other than one solo part/promo and a bunch of short tour clips on the Ride Channel between Brainwash (2010) and Programming Injection (2019). How does that happen? The whole skateboarding landscape changed in that time and they just kind of sat there.

Do you have to take a shot for every rail in that first trick in Braden's part?

The video was pretty sick, more like a promo with a few tricks from the dudes plus a couple introductory part. Braden Hoban did some fucked up shit while still having a dope style. I thought this might be the first time Ive seen Theshawns skating presented properly. Its common knowledge that he rips but Ive always perceived him as a wacky contest dude, cool to see him in a proper company video with a part. I don't know Dashawn, but FWIW I used to work at a shop many years ago when he was young and even as a kid who was clearly already better than everyone he never displayed any annoying personality traits around the shop. I was actually impressed that he always seemed so mellow for a kid that good at his age. But those were just a few interactions many years ago, I have no idea what he's like now, nor do I really care. He's fun to watch and seems like a good person to me, so he checks both boxes, I don't really have a third criteria.
I also used to hate on laser flips, and it's kind of embarrassing that I used to hate tricks flat out regardless of how they were done, but in my defense, back then people weren't really doing them the way that he does them. That shit looks fun to me.

Here's an older part, but from what I understand it was all filmed in a very short amount of time and he wasn't happy with it.

damn i had never seen that. that was fucking wild. Westgate shit. front blunt on that red rail was bonkers. he reminds me of J wray on alot of his stuff, just massive power.
wow. dude is crazy good

This might be the last skateboard video.
Also, Ed has the best eye for scouting talent.
If you don't like this video, burst mough.
Every video is “the last skateboard video”. That shit was said about Propeller
Ed doesn’t do anything with the team. He was barely hands on when he was skating.
Ok, but through all these years who was getting great people on?
If you meany the 90s-00's it was Ed. I think prior to Brainwash, Sinclair joined but unsure of his role. Swank has probably had a hand it somewhat too.
The biggest thing for mine is Toy failed to put out anything other than one solo part/promo and a bunch of short tour clips on the Ride Channel between Brainwash (2010) and Programming Injection (2019). How does that happen? The whole skateboarding landscape changed in that time and they just kind of sat there.
I think there was a guy called Kevin Barnett that was running the ship pre-Sinclair
He was just filmer + editor, don't think he ran anything else.
Also I think there is more people saying "people will hate on anything" as opposed to people actually hating on this video.

I am thankful about this video existance. Thanks to it posters name dropped Nick Trapasso's "Suffer the Joy" part, which I had never seen. What a gem, what a style. Perfect part.
