I’m curious how that superstition started but I don’t really believe in that.
Have you had issues with red top? Or do you even believe it?
-
This thread is bad luck

How it started is beyond me but yeah.
I wonder why they still make them red... Ooooh...
-
personally I like a red top. That or brown.
-
Purple dyed ply please
-
In Gallant’s Bunt episode he said he didn’t ride green top grain, but didn’t specify why. Is there something I’m missing?
-

I don’t know you but you have terrible taste in clothes.
-
First time I got top was from a red head chick so I have no problem with red top.
-
This was started by like Josh Harmony or someone at Foundation, the progression
-
I don't get out of my way to get them or anything but surprisingly, red, purple and pink tops were always some of my best boards. Yellow and green tops have always been my worst. Similar feel to riding a dipped deck to me, just not as fierce. Teal has been alright.
-
Last red top I had was complete doo doo but I think it was the shape more then anything. Yellow feels special to me for some reason but everything else I don’t care
-
Only time ive ever broken a bone/needed surgery I was riding a red top, I pretty much just wont skate a red top now
-
i believe.
all my redtops sucked ass and broke weirdly. pretty sure i hurt myself really bad on a couple. my first serious ankle injury was with a red top. also red tops look the worst for some reason. i pity anyone who has to ride a redtop. and, this is true, if there's a chance that the board is a red top when ordering online for example, i won't do it. i don't buy red tops ever.
i also dislike green or turquoise tops. i'm indifferent to natural, yellow and blu.
my favorite tops are purple or dark brown/black stain. shoutouts to orange, too, i have good memories about orange tops, they are always welcome.
-
I like a grey/dark top because it makes the board feel fresh for longer as you don't notice the grip getting fucked so much. Red top to me has a weird used-to-skate-guy skating either a christmas complete or a decade old 7.5'' complete vibe to it
-
I can’t think of any logical explanation as to how they would differ, I’m putting this down to a condition known as chromophobia crossed with self inflicted superstition.
I say this as I let go of all of my board worries and have focused all my energy to being worried about who keeps putting wax on coping
-
From a podcast with Nate Broussard he said the story about not riding red tops is from Ed Templeton, that really fucked up neck/head injury he had he was skating a red top and wont ride one again. It kinda got into the heads of the other Toy guys and some of them stopped as well. I can imagine with the other teams they were on the idea of "no red tops" spread to other guys who are influenced by superstition.

I’ve never skated well with a blue top. I’ll ride any color but blue.
-
None pref what so ever, save for I do prefer stained top/bottom plies over natural wood. Even that doesn’t much matter to me.
I remember Jim T telling me he didn’t like red top decks back in the late 90s, so it’s been around.
Something about a serious injury occurring while on one?

Once broke my leg the day after reading the first red top ply thread , now I ride em to overcome my old fear

I’m not good enough to pretend the color of the top ply affects my skating.

+1

yellow plys are so ugly but i always skate good on them. Ive got a baker with a lakers yellow/natural/purple ply situation and it's gross.
-
I made a thread about red tops in like 2008 and got roasted for like 13 straight pages. Miss the old SLAP
well, we could all call you a dick for a week if that helps
-
Personally Ive never had a red top or at least dont remember having any, but not because of the superstition (on my end) but because they really are not that common
-
I never think about the top colour after it's gripped and the board has been skated.
-
Red tops suck, they always break or I always roll my ankle
Personal list;
Pink tops (hold all the power)
Blue
Green
Yellow
Black
Purple
Orange
Red
Natural

Only time ive ever broken a bone/needed surgery I was riding a red top, I pretty much just wont skate a red top now
last red top i owned I destroyed my wrist and havent touched one since
-
Dislocated my knee and ruptured my achilles both on red tops, Won’t even touch one.
-
I got one and I love it
-
I can't recall what color top I was riding when I fucked myself up bad, but I fucked myself up bad and, if it was a red top, I'd rather just not skate them so as to not tempt fate.
-
Dipped boards are the worst!
-
no not never. you should too....
just no dipped decks for me personally ever. fuck this shit.
-
Orange top ply makes a board feel like mush from the start don’t know what’s up with that. Double if it also has an orange bottom ply.
Yellow is okay, green is pretty good.

Imperialist propaganda. Next.

So
Stem to stern road rash 6 stitches and a concussion spring 2013
It was a hill bomb gone wrong I did 35-40 mph into
a curb to scorpion and flipped into a wall
I put away that board till 2016
I tore my acl November 2016 same board first day at the skate park 3rd day back on that board
7 staples in my head winter 2018 red top 8.38 clutch.
I don't believe every red top is bad luck. I've been injured on mostly green tops I think.
I'm into purple tops.
-
Luxury problems. I don't even know the color of my top ply.

Backing the pink top, always looks sick to me
-
orange and black/grey stain always look best to me, but I never really pick out boards based on stain, have never had a red one though so they could indeed be cursed
-
In middle school I wore a red top once and that was a big nono because the administration banned any showing of the color red because of problems with students being Nortes and Bloods . They made me wear a PE shirt the rest of the day. Also wore red shoelaces one time and they made me take it off and use a 5 inch piece of string to tie my shoes and they only went through the first row of eyelets, had to walk the whole day with my shoes constantly coming off.
-
Had one redtop. It was a world industries slick. We don't talk about those days.
-
I don't mind any color of top ply tbh, as long as there is color. I fucked my ankle on a natural top ply, plus they look really cheap to me.
-
preferred:
red
pink
purple
black/grey

You bet buddy. But I'm still sitting with a stock ka24e in my 240sx LOL.
-
Currently riding a red top. Never thought much about it.
-
For me, I have a weird superstition about any part of my board being red. It's cool if its red paint from a curb, but I don't really like my board to be red. Wheels, trucks, deck, bolts, everything. Which is weird, cause as a kid I rode hella Alien Spectrum boards, which had red in graphic.
I was cool with literally any other color top. I actually loved natural tops.
-
just keep the white lighter away from me, man
-
I know a dude who has a thing about blue lighters. I went to light up a blunt while he was driving our crew to the skatepark and he made me throw my lighter out the window! Said he got arrested or something because his friend had one.
I didn't have bad luck with it but I had a backer last year that had a natural bottom layer. Shit looks so booty, especially since it was a white board with black graphics. Gotta have dyed bottom plys. I back the purple preference. Got a yellowtop with a red bottom right now, i sprayed the bottom

Bauhaus members studied primary colors and shapes extensively and assigned them to each other on the basis of certain characteristics.
The artist and Bauhaus teacher Wassily Kandinsky, who was prominently represented in the early documenta exhibitions, is regarded as the founder of these color-shape associations, which he tested with his students. Today, the yellow triangle, the blue circle, and the red square are unmistakably connected to the Bauhaus.

Never heard of this thing before but im riding one right now, with the g stripe gripjob too.. I like it. What i dont like tho is the blue ones, really dull colour. Im not a fan of pink ones either, too bright and poppy (is that a Word idk?)
-
This discussion has been going on forever. I asked on here once and someone said Kris Markovich said in an interview red tops are unlucky. Everyone hating on yellow tops needs to stop hurting my feelings.
With the Bic colors I've known a lot of people that do that. Everyone has weird superstitions, I knew a guy who was probably autistic, he would have to switch his laces out. He'd take the left lace and transfer it to the right shoe and take right lace and put it in the left shoe.
-
I remember ordering a deck once online and it said “stain color may vary”. When I opened up the package it was a red top and I just thought, “I hope the superstition isn’t true.” I gripped it in a brick pattern so the red popped through the black rectangles of grip, looked really dope. It was a great deck and I learned a lot on it. Ever since then I don’t have a preference now. It’s like the lighter thing, it’s all in your head. For me personally, I still get people have their own thoughts, feelings, and superstitions and respect it. It just doesn’t make a difference to me anymore. It’s easier that way :)
-
Prefer natural. Only red tops I remember were from the first batch of Baker boards released. And they were trash
-
on the topic of bic lighters, red ones always break after 5 min for me. i have a ton of red disfunctional bic lighters lying around. again, my best experiences here are with purple, black and orange. i'm on clipper lighters rn tho and their matte colors are a whole different ball game that i still have to make my mind up about.
i agree white lighters are sus... i never see them around, only at the corner store display. there's a certain kind of blue that weirds me out, it's in between royal blue and navy, those lighters always look fake for some reason or photoshopped into reality.

lots if not most bic lighters have a different colour underneath the wrapper.

this is the reason i never buy them, i don't trust them. i only go for the solid ones without a wrapper.
-
I never had a red top I think so I can't answer, my preference is for brown stained.
-
Genuinely thought this was a thread for gingers being bummed out on having red hair...
-
I've also heard white lighters are bad luck and a lot of those wrapped lighters are white under the sheathing.

Shoutout to yellow triangles.
