Title: Arcades!
Post by: TwisT on May 04, 2021, 11:21:34 AM
I want to talk about arcades PALS! What was the arcades like when you where you grew up? Are there arcades near you now? What do you play?

Growing up, in the 90s, my favorite arcade was this place called the Butterfly in Detroit. Go carts, golf, pool, and the best selection of arcade games in the city. We could only go Saturday mornings. Not the best time when your a kid like me, who had cartoons to watch. Turns out because that place was apparently gang hotspot and the bar got really rowdy later in the day.

Me and my older brother use to play marvel vs capcom. He could beat the game on one quarter. Which was crazy because we never owned it at home. I wasn't as good he was but I had a bad habit of beating an older teen/adult and walking away after I won. I just didn't want to play it for that long, but apparently, it pissed people off. I'm still NOT good at fighting games but understand the mechanics well enough to beat an average person.

The best game hands down growing up were Virtual on. A mech fighting game, where I would sit in that cock pit and play all day.

Nowadays, I'm not really into the Barcades, thing but they're better than nothing. they usually have street fighter and TMNT. The thing is Barcades are Bars first, and I'm there the play games not drink.

We do have this place called round1, which has a good selection, or fighting cabinets, and newer machines. I find myself drawn to the Japanese rhythm games they have. This one called mvseca is dope. I actually bring my own headphones now, cause I'm that lame. And Dance rush stardom. They also have wifi-enabled street fighter machines which are cool if you want to get you ass handed it to you.

Mario Kart arcade GP is also pretty great if you're playing with the right people.

So, any of you still lurk at arcades?

I never frequented arcades, but I always went straight to Time Crisis when I did.

If you’re ever in Salem, MA

https://bit.bar/

I just missed the arcade heyday.

Started going in 88’.

It was dark, smoky and the owner had young girls hanging out in the back room. Basically a skate shop that made tons of money before NES.

When Street Fighter then Mortal Combat came out my friends were raiding their parents change bins. Before credit cards took over some parents had UTZ pretzel containers filled with loose change. No quarter was safe. Arcades could work again but they need to be bars or adjacent to laundry mats.

I miss the sketchy ass arcade I used to go to HS.

But, I do own a Ms. Pac Man cocktail machine. I fucking love that thing.

I grew up in the 80s, my mom would leave us at the arcade at the Santa Rosa mall while she shopped. Lots of tmnt and moonwalker. Now it’s basically Dave and busters or a mini golf place and everything costs a dollar, it sucks. Old cabinets with crt monitors are so dated, and I’m sure the maintenance on them isn’t worth keeping them going, but I would love to find a working Mortal Kombat in the wild. So many quarters were spent on that thing, lining them up, calling “next,” and then getting frustrated because all this kid Ruben would do was Raiden’s b, b, f Superman…

the good places back in the day usually reeked of b.o and had a guy selling dimes. quarter games were obsolete by the time i started attending but 50cent vertical and side scrollers were still a thing. then house of the dead came out -lost interest in all other games before mgs

When I was young I would walk over to the convenience store and the only games they had were Tron and Xaxxon.  I think this is why I've never cared about video games ever since.

We talking MvC 1 or 2 here? So much nostalgia attached to the place, back when you could still smoke indoors and $2 would last you all afternoon. My brother and I spent so much time playing MvC2 and were decent, until we encountered the real pros who were wrecking us with Cable, Magneto, Storm and Sentinel.

Went to a barcade in CA a few years back and it struck me how much money you can quickly dump into those machines. My friends and I were playing the X-Men beat'em up (4 players) and the damage was unforgiving. We were dumping in quarters 3-4 times each per stage.

I was always obsessed with the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 arcade game, always played with Kabal throwing out mad combos.

One time for a friends birthday his parents dumped us off at the arcade with several rolls of quarters and we went to town on The Simpsons 4 player arcade.  That and the 4 player X-Men game were always the best with a bunch of friends.

Some games were designed to be a quarter sink. Fucking Jurassic park has a part where you just die no matter what.

Fighting games were great because you could beat the system. I knew if I had 1 quarter, i could get like an half hour of street fighter in at the end of the day.

We definitely preferred mvc 2
Ryu, Spider-Man, Wolverine for me

Silent Scope was my shit.

Any pinball machine is fantastic.

The old X-Men/Simpsons beat 'em up.

Love Marvel Vs. Capcoms/Street Fighters, especially Street Fighter 3: 3rd strike, an arcade style game though I only ever play it on PlayStation.

Dave and busters is pretty whack, they focus on redemption, simulation and licensed properties. Their practically a casino.

When I travel I love to check out the arcades, and now that I think about it, there aren’t as many MK machines a capcom. If you wanna blow $300 on nostalgia their the arcade1up machines. They’re a little smaller but not that bad. Right now my house is too small to justify owning one, but hopefully in few years people will get tired of them and I can pick up a used one.

I used to hit this arcade/bar called 1up but I don’t care for drunkards getting over competitive and slamming the controls when they lose. Then I found the most perfect arcade called hyperspace. They had hella snacks, ps2/Dreamcast/genesis emulators, no alcohol, and every console actually worked. They moved the whole thing to Las Vegas a couple years ago so then I found a pretty decent arcade room at a clockwork orange themed club called milk. They had gauntlet, tekken, time crisis2 and skew ball but I fucked that one up myself cuz I kept bringing dates there and now I can’t go in without seeing at least 2 of my exs. So now I just download isos of the old games I would play with my homies and just call em to come over.

we got this spot called battle and brew. How it works is you rent out a booth, really just a couch with a TV, coffee table and consoles attached. Then you check games. The food and bar were also great. It was great a place but eventually, it blew up. Which is great for them, but not for me. It was great a spot for the homies to gather, and a great tinder date spot, cause it was a little corky, but a real quality establishment. Now it's just busy.

In straight Street Fighter I'm a Ryu/Akuma or Chun-li guy.

If I'm playing MvC, for Capcom I'll use any of my SF characters and Hsien-Ko. Strider is cool too.

For Marvel, I'll use Spiderman/Wolverine/Captain America/Deadpool. I mix my teams up. Never got any good with any of the "top tier" marvel characters.

thats my spot in waterloo, ONtario. i have been to lot of arcades growing up. i have been to japan as well in 2006 and played in most of the famous arcades like Taito Station Harajuku , Akihabara Club Sega, etc.

cant wait to fucking go back, hoping to hit it again this summer. i dindt go while it was re-opened during  our half assed lockdwon cause i felt like it would be irresponsible but fuck that im going back next time shits open.

i met my homeys here 1x a week to play Street Fighter and it was really the thing i needed to keep my mental health in check. i am trying to do skating now as a replacement but a lot more things have to fall in to place for skateboarding to happen. really miss this shit.

One of those “Round 1” places opened in Philly right before the pandemic and they had a little annex with Japanese style sit down cabinets with a bunch of fighters and bullet hell shooters. I spent 40 minutes playing against some dude on SSF2 Turbo like it was 1995 again. It was great.

I spent countless hours in arcades as a kid. I remember dark and smoky ones like Aladdin’s Castle at the local mall, mini golf places, 7/11s with mini game rooms, heated fighting game scenes downtown at Spaceport and others when I was older.

I really liked side scrolling action games like Rolling Thunder, Robocop, ESWAT, etc. but when fighting games came around they were my obsession. SF2, SF3, Darkstalkers, and all of the SNK stuff. I could also beat Time Crisis 2 on a quarter and get halfway through TC3.

Those Barcades too often have broken controls and no one seems to care. I did however finally beat Strider in one.

A few years ago I was with the family at Hershey Park and they have one arcade there with a bunch of classics. I finally beat Shinobi in the arcade at the age of 43. My kids blew through $20 on bullshit ticket collection games in the time I spent for .25 cents.

I guess that’s why arcades closed.

Ninja Turtles and Simpsons were a huge favorite of mine growing up. Spent a crap load of coins beating that game and when you win, you just want to play again the next time you see the game. Daytona USA was fun too. Then when fighting games came out, everyone went in order from Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Tekken, etc. I sort of want one of those mini arcades but then I'd never play it since I can just do that on a PS4 or something.

File that under videos you can smell.

Late 1990s was a great time to be an arcade gamer. Sprites were getting bigger and more colorful, I'd never touch DnD outside of this video game, which they have ported to PC if you're looking to relive some quarter munching:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqbtHFxU7ZE

Capcom and SNK really had their arcade systems mastered; creating some of the best looking fighters like Red Earth and Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves.

I was deep into fighting games back then. As much as we all liked Street Fighter , my friends and I were deadly serious about King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown. I also loved the shoot em/bullet hell stuff. I once spent I don't know how many hours trying to beat a Metal Slug game with one credit. I made it to the last boss...
There is actually an arcade, 10 minutes away from me. I don't know why I haven't gone.

Some god-tier skills needed to make it that far on a single credit. Loved how Metal Slug cranked up the wackiness with each instalment - aliens, zombies, new aliens, KoF fighters

Virtua Tennis is loads of fun too; a good player will have you zipping all over the court on return before lobbing the ball just over the net to fuck with you.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned DDR yet, flash in the pan success of the 2000s.

From my local, the new hotness is dance rush stardom. I went there once and there were a crew with fucking water bottles, sweatbands and gym bags just camped out at the cabinet. definitely more fun and accessible than DDR IMO. Also, even the low-rank modes are a good workout.

i think i was in the first gen of the arcade. i remember going to my first one in the 70s in singapore and it was my first time seeing donky kong and galaga. my dad never gave me enough quarters to be able to get good at any of these games but in high school i lived in australia and the hub buss stop was at a mall with an arcade and we used to hustle it with straws. i remember playing puch out a lot and there there was some plat former style game i was into but vaguely remember. i think it had genies or something like that. after that i was poor as shit with my mom in louisiana and would play at the local connivence store on the rare occasion i had some extra change. in college was last time i'd actually hang at an arcade. they had one on campus and i got good enough at street fighter that none of my friends would really want to play me anymore so i tried going there and getting schooled by the nerds. this last xmas santa dropped this off the for the kids and i got to go down memory lane. it's a 4 stick setup and got 30,000 classic games everything in arcade and console up to ps2 timeframe. we've moved on from the classics and mostly play steam games on it now. the kids love cuphead, ori, mortal kombat 12, killer instinct, etc... it's good fun.

if you go to the counter at round 1, for any of those japanese games, you can get one of the RFID cards that saves your stats. I think with intial D, you can mod your car. Some of the games there has Wifi, where you can get your ass kicked by somebody in japan. Not Initial D

another great thing about Round 1. Kids under 13 need an adult. After 8pm all kids need an adult. After 10 no kids. They stay open until 2am. Week nights and sunday nights are so good. Any Rowdyness is usually near the bowling area.

I suspect the entire arcade industry hinges on Japanese gamers; which has unfortunately been hit bad by COVID. They have the most innovative arcade experiences, I remember being blown away by this tactical card game where you could control onscreen troop movement with cards you laid down on the playing field.

There are also massive PvP Gundam gams where you get to customize your robot and save the progress for huge battles. Like a more advanced version of Virtual On.

there's this Japanese magician battle royal arcade game that's online. your left has a will nunchuck to control movement. Your right hand is like attacks and shit. You use your powers by waving your hand doing different gestures. For example, clutch your fist to pick up a car pull your arm back and throw it. Or doing finger guns to shoot lighting. They put you in a room online and run around fighting real people. It's a dope concept, but I can't imagine putting in the time at an arcade to really get any good at it.

I really want to go to the sega arcade in tokyo. I wish arcade culture in the US had evolved like japans instead of giving us, fruit ninja, and fucking "Space Invaders Frenzy" who wanted that shit.

actually i like fruit ninja.

There's this place I went to in Portland, the Avalon and all the games were a nickel....it gave me the opportunity to finish the Simpsons game which for me at least is a serious accomplishment.....

Used to love them my favourite ones are street fighter tekken and the metal slugs
Time crisis was good too
Used to play those ticket machines too
Crazy taxi was tight

Do they have super sessions in states? You used to go on a Saturday pay 20 bucks or something and they’d lock you in there and all the games were free

We had this place called topps in the Myer centre it was a big arcade had a dragon coaster and one of those ships that goes up and down that place was cool as fuck
Fuck yeah there’s a video of it on YouTube

https://youtu.be/dpZ7nFt7k5I

Far out the whine of the dragon coaster takes me back

Also grundys in surfers paradise was sick

Can’t remember where maybe Piccadilly Circus? but went to this beast arcade in the uk it was seriously huge I wanna say dick Branson owned it or something there was a big virgin music store there

Had a go of rise of the triad there in vr in the mid 90s, never saw it anywhere else again

You guys will probably laugh but we go to this place called zero latency in Brisbane it’s this vr thing in a warehouse, computer on your back and you have to carry the rifle around and actually walk to get around

Can’t remember exactly but we got something like 4th or 6th highest score in aus at that place but it’s not very difficult

I have seen videos of some Japanese arcade joints yeah they look legit as

That’s dope, Sleazy
