never thought I'd be watching a 10 min video about a damn bench but here I am and I loved it
-
legendary!
-
That was dope
-
really cool backstory. loved how he just focused that board when he finally landed it lol. so much power
-
Wow. This was soooooo much more interesting than I thought it was going to be. I always thought AVE was the silent type, but he told the story pretty well. Definitely worth the time
-
That was so entertaining. Quarter Snacks, please keep doing segments like this whenever possible.
-
Yeah that was dope.
-
that flew by so fast, amazing story. yeah ave
-
So good! Thought i knew some stuff about that bench, but they went in DEEP for this one
-
Didn't think I was going to sit through an 8-minute video of someone talking about a bench, but by the end I didn't want it to end. Wonder how much it cost to build the replica bench.
-
"we would chain all that shit together because it would get stolen, or somebody would do something better than you did."
Taking a bench, then claiming it as your own, bringing it spots, for only you to skate it, is wack.

What a dude!

The kind of content Jenkem could only dream of.
-
Great content! Skateboarding can be hilarious sometimes. If you tried to tell someone "yeah I got this huge metal bench I stole from a park in my garage, because other skateboarders will try to steal it to themselves if I leave it somewhere", they'd probably think you are losing your marbles.
-
A heart warming tale of a boy and his bench.
Loved it.
-
The kind of content Jenkem could only dream of.
For real. Kosta doesn’t even have to try, and QS has been the shit since it was called 50-50Skateboarding or whatever. Whereas jenkem is the most tryhard shit of all time.
This was sick. If you have a problem with dude locking up something like that at a popular foundation spot, in the middle of downtown LA for that matter, you probably have never had something stolen or destroyed at a foundation spot (once it’s blown out that is.).... I get it.
Still waiting for the 2 page ad introducing guy to FA and Freddy to hockey. Or Vice versa. What in the fuck could y’all possibly be waiting for, I know someone over there is reading this.

Taking a bench, then claiming it as your own, bringing it spots, for only you to skate it, is wack.
While that is kinda true, taking a regularly skated bench from essentially a kinda diy and keeping it in your parents yard probably unused for 15 years is extremely wack.
-
Heard bits of this story here and there throughout the years. I can't believe I watched and enjoyed a 10-minute interview about a bench that was stolen, lost, found, lost, rebuilt, and found again, all so a grown man could slide his wheelieboard on across it.
-
Didn't think I was going to sit through an 8-minute video of someone talking about a bench, but by the end I didn't want it to end. Wonder how much it cost to build the replica bench.
Same here! What a wonderful story! lol It would most likely cost about 2 grand. Surprisingly it doesn't cost that much to have something bent. Well idk about 2021 with all the price increases and all. Now I wait for a FA deck with the green bench on it! haha

I want to see how close the replica is to the original one. I loved this piece
-
so rad to hear some extra bits about that bench I never had throughout the years. this is the best type of content that has come out of skateboarding in the past few years. thoroughly enjoy outlets that are telling these kinds of stories.
-

The dedication to one bench is hilarious though. Moving it, finding it after 13+ years, building a new one, getting the second one AND the rebuilt one. I want to skate this bench now

He checks a lot boxes when it comes to being a piece of shit.
According to his LinkedIn, he’s a salesman for VW in Huntington Beach. Strange profession for a dude who killed someone with a car.

It'd be around $600 on the low end to build this bench, its just a little more than 20ft of rectangular tube and square tube welded up. Metal prices have doubled, going to triple in July allegedly too. I bet they paid close to a grand though

Thanks for doing the math!
I love skateboarding and the community but we know instinctively that leaving a box or rail out is bound to get stolen by none other than fellow skateboarders. And this is why we cant have nice things.

Ain’t this the truth. I had a fucking quarterpipe stolen from my driveway. The first skate obstacle I made with my dad. Really fucked up my perception of “fellow skaters” from a very young age.
Skateboarders are their own biggest enemies sometimes.

Yeah that's what I meant, while what AVE did could be seen as wack at least they were using it regularly. Hence it's even more wack to take it and leave it at your mom's house for 15 years, I mean surely word got around enough to know AVE was still wanting it years later, even people on here seemed to know.

But they didn't go through with the replica. And even if they did, it's not like that would have made it any easier to skate. And even if it WAS easier to skate, we're talking a single clip compared to multiple parts of stock tricks from a guy who had private training facilities for the majority of his career. I get your point but it's a huge reach to say both things are the same.

And the replica was because the original was gone. It wasn’t a Chad Fernandez Convention Center ledge situation

Holy shit, this is seriously the kind of thing I can't get enough of these days, not least because it showed pretty much all of AVE's Dancing on Thin Ice Part in raw footage. Also, as others have said, it's an interesting story and AVE does it justice. I also thought he was a bit taciturn based on other things I've seen from him but he surprised me by what a lively and engaging storyteller he seems to be.

Well, It was pretty clear from the footage that AVE hat found and moved the bench, while berra did everything he could to disguise the fact that he had built the loading dock spot himself. Berra tried to lie to everyone.
This fact makes AVE‘s Clip cool and Berra‘s Clips in the DVS Video pretty wack.
Marc Johnson had a bunch of tricks on a ledge he built himself in his epic Lakai part. Nobody complained because they also showed a short timelapse of him building the ledge. It was made transparent he was skating an „artificial“ ledge.

I love videos and articles that show a skaters dedication and love for a specific spot/obstacle, makes guys like AVE doing tricks I could never dream of doing seem a lot more relatable, few outside of skateboarding would understand a relationship with an inanimate object like this

Why this even needs to be explained in 2021 is baffling. Should be pretty obvious at this point.

For real. I’d like to see more segments about this type of behind the scenes stuff.
From a brand perspective I find I get more hyped on a segment like this than of a random footage dump.
-
Big fan of the AA cameo with the still photos.
-
This whole thing feels like SLAP fan fiction. AVE defeats the villanous Tosh Townsend and Tony Tave with a critical assist from Andrew Allen. The only thing that would make it more fan-fictiony is if Fred Gall was somehow involved, perhaps using the bench to save a baby from a fire at some point while on bath salts. And that baby? Nora Vasconcellos.

Easy Pals.
Stoked on the response to this. It was a lot of fun to work on.
To answer the question which has popped up a few times: the copy of the bench that AVE got built cost around 1,300 bucks and was pretty much spot on except it ended up being about foot longer.
The audio for this was about 20 minutes long so some stuff that wasn’t so important got cut in the name of concision, ha.

A part of the story was told to me years ago by Aaron Artis, he said he and Wes Lott took the bench and kept it at Wes's house, and at some point got stolen by another skater from a spot they left it at.
I believe Aaron is in the footage with the cops at the foundation spot.
I might be mis remembering our conversation but that's How my brain recalls it.

Really enjoyed this piece, unlikely love story ending in divorce twice.
At least the original bench was a real piece of street furniture and didn't have a Prudential sign fastened to the side of it.

In and around 2002 my homie living in Edison NJ said he skated a ledge that was presumably stolen from Fred Gall’s driveway. If true I would love a segment about Fred hunting down his missing ledge. Imagine being that big an asshole that you steal Fred’s ledge from his property.

haha, just goes to show how you underestimate how self-conscious people are even if they are insanely talented. Outside of like P-Rod, MJ, or PJ Ladd, it is pretty hard to think of someone from that era who would have had something that could top it, and no one is doing it the speed/style Ave did.

@Sweeps thank you for posting this video. It awesome to look back to that era and re-experience how sick Rob Dyrdek's skating was. He even made a fs halfcab heelflip look pretty nice. Ave is one of the all time greats and probably anything involving his skating is a precious commodity/experience.
I wonder how come nobody ever sat him down and told Berra that he's not a talented thespian? He's almost painfully unappealing to watch in that regard. He's a rad skater but yikes. Or am I way off and people find him entertaining and charismatic?
@Speedway thank you for doing this video. Please do more. I would definitely buy a QS Ave bench tee shirt or hat to support the cause <3

Damn AVE's pad is huge. Always like his original shoe on DC, slim by 2000s standards but made you believe you could do some amazing switch 360 flips.

@Sweeps thank you for posting this video. It awesome to look back to that era and re-experience how sick Rob Dyrdeck's skating was. He even made a fs halfcab heelflip look pretty nice. Ave is one of the all time greats and probably anything involving his skating is a precious commodity/experience.

The one AVE does in Berra's old park at 9:29 is perfect. The way he whips/fast wraps them and how they come right up leveled to his feet is that beautiful mix of aggression and precision.

Taking a bench, then claiming it as your own, bringing it spots, for only you to skate it, is wack.
If this was anyone but AVE people would be talking about how wack it is. Idc either way, but keep the same energy.
The dedication to one bench is hilarious though. Moving it, finding it after 13+ years, building a new one, getting the second one AND the rebuilt one. I want to skate this bench now
It’s also weird to think who out there would be doing tricks better than sw fs crooks flip out back then that Ave was worried about
Koston did switch nosegrind halfcab flip out in Yeah Right. Can’t think of anything else off the top of my head that is close to Ave’s trick.
While we’re on the subject, the one he does in Propeller on the table was as perfect as a trick could be.

So this bench was first stolen by Tony Turbo, then by Tosh Townend and eventually ended up with Tony Tave.

Highly entertaining. Do you have any similar projects lined up?
Yeah, I've got another couple of these 'Favourite Spot' pieces in mind and I'm hoping to make a start on the next one soonish.
In the meantime, here's the first one I did with Gilbert.
Thanks again to everyone for the kind words.

Green Bench aside, I also talked to AVE for QS about where he feels his career is at post-40, the 'Mind Field' days, F.A. and his friendship with Greg Hunt.
"If you’re given a gift and you’re able to fully realize it, then you fucking did it.
Still, it doesn’t take away from me wanting — you know, “what’s my best now?” Like I said, this last video part was a lot of fun. It had its moments, but I enjoy a certain amount of suffering. Yet, there wasn’t that thing which drove me in the past either." – AVE on his career, post-Propeller.

haha, just goes to show how you underestimate how self-conscious people are even if they are insanely talented. Outside of like P-Rod, MJ, or PJ Ladd, it is pretty hard to think of someone from that era who would have had something that could top it, and no one is doing it the speed/style Ave did.
Didnt Koston do switch nosegrind half cab flip out on it in Yeah Right?
Yeah, he did, should have mentioned it, and I'm sure Daewon would have had something crazy for it. But, its a small as hell list of guys who would get something comparable to Ave's trick on it.

In and around 2002 my homie living in Edison NJ said he skated a ledge that was presumably stolen from Fred Gall’s driveway. If true I would love a segment about Fred hunting down his missing ledge. Imagine being that big an asshole that you steal Fred’s ledge from his property.
This is actually the plot to the next John Wick movie. "They stole Fred's ledge and killed his dog"
-
Haha, wow. Best skate content I have seen in a while. Loved every second of it.

Haven’t we been shitting on Bera for over a decade for essentially doing to same thing with the yellow flatbars?
A moveable street obstacle and a skatepark obstacle are very different things.
Is it though? His boy was making a replica of one so he could get a trick.
Wait but they did ?? He says in the video that now he has two of the fuckin things. So while he did film his ender on the original, he still followed through with making the new one too.

Then and only then will we know that the United States has truly healed. It would honestly be a really cool community moment if all 4 were reunited and someone grinded all four in a single grind.
Oh wow though, I had no idea there were 4. Any info on the other two?
There's also the recreation AVE had commissioned. So that's 4 + an imposter bench? Or is the recreation included in that count?

There’s three: two OG and one replica.
First bench (as seen in The DC Video) is lost. It went from Santa Ana, to that LA spot from DC Vid, to Tosh Townend’s boys, to some dude’s garage for 15 years, to AVE for some of the footage in ‘Dancing On Thin Ice’ (everything sans the switch back noseblunt, I believe) until it was taken away by maintenance in the carpark he was skating it.
Second bench (the FA/Thin Ice/Noseblunt bench) went from Santa Ana, then it wound up in Tony Tave’s parents backyard, went to AVE for the sw noseblunt, to Tompkins for the opening of the FA and then got jacked and taken to Philly.
Third bench is the replica and that’s the one at the skatepark in HB.

While I love the saga of this bench, the real downside is constantly relocating it runs the risk of non-skaters (such as city workers) taking it and just throwing it away.
