ADMIN EDIT: REQUESTED REMOVAL FROM QUOTED AUTHOR
Man this will be a huge bummer if true. Dave is one of the most amazing, talented, & genuine human beings out there.
-
yo anyone who knows him: was he possibly at the GULCH show on saturday? i have some SJ homies that aren’t in skateboarding but are in the hardcore scene that i could talk to.

Sorry dude , i was fan of his skating and he seemed like a good guy from following him on ig.
-
I remember first seeing him years ago in a SE regional mag. I think it was his pro debut w/ a bear graphic and it was pretty funny. I will continue to remember it fondly along with his career since
Rest in peace Dave Abair
-
His out of control style was so raw and always got me hyped to skate. On top he seemed like such a genuine and positive guy. Rest in power to a VT legend.

Super sad.
Dave was always super welcoming and nice. I hope he’s resting somewhere good. He recently was on walker Ryan’s podcast and is pro for Scumco for people entirely unfamiliar

Just read this article and it has some beautiful lines in it.
https://www.toebock.com/videos/dave-abair-ft-miley/
As SF commuters reach their end of the line at Fort Miley, Abair rolls on at the concrete utopia. Both are covered in tattoos, both are a little weathered and beaten, and both have tackled the testament of time. There are many lessons we can learn from both Fort Miley and David Abair—hang in there—never give up—keep your dedication and your dreams close to a sleeve-worn heart. However, the most important lesson that we take away from Abair and the old artillery battery is that hard work is timeless, and with it, no trench is too deep.
-
This is so sad. I really enjoyed his skating since he came on the scene like ten years ago. What a raw skater. I hate that so many skaters die all the time way to early. We need to have discussion why so many skaters die way to early all the time and what we can do as a community to prevent this. It is almost like an epidemic of death in our community. I don't know any thing about his death though. I am heartbroken even though I don't know him personally. The statistics for the life span of a skater must be way lower then the national average, both where I live in the countries in Europe and in the US.
Rest easy - You made an impact on the scene with powerful raw street skating.
Thank you for posting some of his parts. I really loved that raw am independent part when it came out.

Sorry if this is a sensitive question but what happened? RIP

fuck man. i used to kick it with dude anytime he was in NY back like 09-14 but havent spoken to him in a minute. damn dude this shits fuckin sad. thoughts go out to his mom and whatever other family. was dude even 30?
and i understand people naturally want answers but just an fyi: when the sources arent stating cause of death (i.e. hit by a car, freak accident, etc) its almost always out of respect for them. if it isnt being made public and youre not close enough to know, have some respect dont ask especially on myspace ig whatever. itll make its way into the public eventually.
rest in peace dave. well catch up soon enough

Interview from March, maybe his last

This is such a bummer.
I always got the feeling he never took what he had for granted just by watching his parts. He seemed very grateful for it all. That interview above confirms it.

Was posted by @GardenSkater77 but never saw anyone rip so much ft miley this hard. I am a huge fan of his baggy skully & bald head era. I saw his thrasher part recently and wanted to see more but didn't do the work you guys did to see his other parts.
I read here he was spotted in the TL and was hoping (subconsciously praying) so much that he'd make it out. Im spending this morning watching his parts & remembering him. Yet another time when a guy I never met dies & it affects me more than the passing of some of my own family members.
Im sad for our loss & am thankful of the ones who shared personal accounts in here of interactions with him. RIP in paradise Dave Abair.

deep condolences to his friends and family, seemed like a nice person on top of being an amazing skater. hug your buddies.

Going to hit the hills heavy today, in honor of Mr. Abair.
I have a couple memories of him, seeing him bomb past me on a hill as I drove the kids to school.
“There goes Dave Abair, kids.”
“Dada, who’s Dave Abair?”
“He’s that blur in a beanie that just sped past us kids.”
Ride on, Dave Abair.
Ride on, and rest easy.
You will for certain be missed around here.
-
So I strangely think of him almost every morning WAYYYY before all this.
He had a day in the life video that shows him bombing hills in SF to get warmed up. It’s a small detail but he always got the ice water to go with his morning coffee and I’ve done that ever since seeing that!! Thanks for the constant stoke and reminder to stay hydrated Abair!!
RIP to a fellow New Englander, you’re a legend
-
damn dude. rip. i was so hyped his most recent part
-
Also, his Raw Ams part was always the stoke. Him yelling “man, that’s the 3rd time I went under a FUCKING car in my whole life” always got me so charged up to go skate and go for it!! Contagious skate energy with Dave Abair
-
damn, was a huge fan of his. RIP

I wasn't aware of the guy at all, but in honor of him, I just watched all his video parts. He skated with a fast raw style and had a good trick selection to boot. RIP Dave
Also, doing a front side half-cab in a line is dope. He made them look good

Tragic news. Rest in Peace, Dave.

Rest in Peace Dave Abair. Condolences to his family and loved ones.
I've never met him, but this part from 411vm is what made me a fan and stuck with me throughout the years. Idk if he picked the song, but i ended buying the album on and would think of him everytime the track comes on, especially if I'm about to skate.

Rest in Peace, Dave.
I skated with him once in Oakland. This was a shortly after the 'Fool's Gold' video came out. We were all together in someones car driving around the East Bay, and he had his head out the window keeping his eyes open for things to skate, but for every 'almost a spot' we passed, he'd yell out... "Fools Gold!" It was pretty funny. Nice guy with contagious energy.
-
This was the first footage I saw of him, wow 12 years ago, time flies.

-
My last Dave experience was bombing haight street. As the hill started I noticed a guy walking in a hoodie. Being observant, I turn my head and it ended up being Dave. We looked at each other at the same time and with minimal time, gave eachother a friendly “what’s up” gesture and he seemed more stoked than I even felt. Rest In Peace Abair.

Oh dude, this was it. Nice pull! He basically filmed a whole part in one day with the Thrasher hoodie, damn. That Wallie 5050 line was especially dope.
Whoever said he throws front half cabs in lines and makes them look great, totally on point. Agreed!

Let's bomb a hill today.
Real talk, though: that hill is coming down off of the side of Bernal Hill, towards Precita Park and just after that, Cesar Chavez. It's the sort of hill you don't even want to walk up, let alone bomb down, if you're even remotely a reasonable person. It's chock full o' chunk and fraught with intersections. Never mind the fact that the side street the line/run began on is, in fact, even steeper!
Seriously, if your in town, check it out.
Gnar-gnars forever for Dave Abair; may he spend his eternity in paradise.

Hey backside_reacharound,
All I'm saying is let the man be mourned by his family and put in the ground before strangers start asking questions. We all are going to find out eventually. Just the wording of this sentence, "Yeah, what happened? I feel like we should know how these things happen." came of really smug and entitled and not genuine to me.
Don't worry, your cautionary tale is on the way.

Nah, that guy can fuck right off too. When one of his friends dies I hope he doesn't have to deal with the "we deserve to know what happened crowd" As you said, things will eventually come out, show some fucking class and wait. If you don't know what happened you weren't close enough to need to know. Nothing about being righteous, it's about showing some fucking respect and human decency.

I am really nostalgic for a time when you could go a month without some notable skater dying. It’s ridiculous at this point how often the community is losing someone like. Not to mention if this is happening that quickly to people we know in the industry, how much the wider skate community is likely suffering with losing their friends and loved ones to drugs, mental health crises, general health crises.
-
Not to be that guy, and not to take away from the loss snd sadness our community has experienced, but skaters are but a drop in the bucket of those who have lost that battle.
If you are dealing with mental health issues, drug or alcohol problems, or anything similar, please consider seeing a therapist - and if you and said therapist don’t match up well, try again. It’s difficult, but, try not be dissuaded by the cost.
There are several national organizations, like Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), that can help you find free or low-cost online therapists or resources.
I don’t have experience with these orgs, but many colleges offer free therapy to their students. I’ve definitely taken that up.
Sorry to harp, but this is often more than a “hug your friends” issue.
-
Random comment but I feel like I became aware of Abair and Austin Kanfoush around the same time period. I loved the rawness of how they both skated.

Exactly. If the guy died from taking drugs, maybe people should know that? If it's true that he died from fentanyl, perhaps other people thinking of taking pills might think twice before doing so.

have you not have a family member die before? do you think your attitude is appropiate?

When someone goes missing, last seen in the TL and then turns up dead there aren't really all that many lines to read between.
I think most people know I'm a scumco guy and Abair was one of my favorite skaters so this really hurts. Aside from all the raw hill bombing madness I always loved watching him do heelflips. He had a good one and you could tell he just loved doing them.
This isn't necessarily related to Dave but I was a heroin addict for years. Luckily I more or less cleaned my act up in 2014, so I just barely missed the beginning of the fentanyl age but I've lost a lot of friends and acquaintances to it since then. Opiate addiction seems so much more dangerous now than it used to be and in my mind it's not really a question of if you'll end up falling out anymore, just a matter of when. If you or someone close to you is struggling with opiate addiction but not ready for treatment yet then please, please look into getting a narcan prescription. It really does save lives and I keep one at home and one in my book bag just in case. It's super easy to administer and very effective at reversing opiod overdoses.

What this guys says! Connect the dots and let it be up to the family if they want to share. He gave us some good parts. He was a sponsored skateboarder, known amongst people who are in to this type of raw power skating - not some sort of celebrity and this is not TMZ where every little personal secret needs to be posted.
Powerful that you overcame the addiction. Shit is tough. Good for you!

Since we’re arguing about wether it’s cool or not to ask what happen I figured I’d point out walker Ryan is posting articles about SF fentanyl busts so you can probably piece together what happened here. RIP Dave you were so fun to watch on a skateboard.

RIP loved his footage
So many idiots freaking out about the absolutely common reaction of wondering how someone died.
Get over yourselves,
Shits so annoying, of course people want to know how someone passed. There’s nothing private about how you die. Literally every entry on Wikipedia about a person who has passed has a section about their death. Not saying how someone died just makes people assume it was sketchy which I assume is the opposite of what people are trying to accomplish.

I think the immediate wondering (that bordered on entitlement to said knowledge) can be interpreted as ghoulish particularly by those who knew them, but after a considerate time has passed, it’s only natural to wonder. It’s human nature to seek answers and wonder how events transpired.

Remember when you immediately made a tasteless joke in this thread the day he went missing? You kinda suck

I remember making a fairly tame joke about Create…but I am sorry if you had a personal connection and felt it was disrespectful. Nothing was known at the time and was just trying to ease the tension a bit.

I think Dave grew up in Vermont... anyway, 15 years ago, he used to come up to Montreal, and him, Marshall (sk8mafia dude), and this other guy used to fucking destroy town.
I knew he was going places. Such a powerhouse.
RIP.
